pandemic and we thank you once again now it's preaching time oh grove and i don't know about you but i'm excited i'm excited to be in the house of the lord and i'm excited to begin i gotta tell you though um this is a new experience for me and so you pray for me and i'm going to keep going on in the name of the lord and in his strength i ask that um you would focus your text to the scripture that i'll be bringing the message from in second kings the fourth chapter verses 25 through 30 and i'll be reading the new living translation and then secondly i'll be focusing on our focal text which will be second kings dave chapter verses five through six again the new living translation when you found your text say amen thank you second kings 4 verses 25 through 30. as she approached the man of god at mount carmel elisha saw her in the distance he said to gehezei look the woman from shunam is coming run out to meet her and ask her is everything all right with your husband and your child yes the woman told hayes i everything is fine but when she came to the man of god at the mountain she fell to the ground before him and caught hold of his feet gahesai began to push her away but the man of god said leave her alone she is deeply troubled but the lord has not told me what it is about then he said then she said verse 28 did i ask for a son did i ask you for a son my lord and then i say don't deceive me and get my hopes up then elijah said to gehazar get ready to travel take my staff and go don't talk to anyone along the way go quickly and lay the staff on the child's face but the boy's mother said as surely as the lord lives and you yourself live i won't go home unless you go with me so elijah returned with her i'll say this is putting some traction on your faith focal text second kings eight verses five through six and i was telling the king about the time elijah had brought a boy back to life at that very moment the mother of the boy walked in to make her appeal to the king about her house and her land look my lord king gahaiza explained exclaimed here's the woman now and this is her son the very one elisha had brought back to life is this true the king asked her and she told him the story so he directed one of his officials to see that everything she had lost was restored to her including the value of any crops that had been harvested during her absence church family again my church family friends and beloved of god i have to admit this is indeed a very different approach to preaching as i am accustomed to and i will admit that i'm both nervous and i am excited so pray for me as i'm nursited and we'll go from there in jesus name amen i've titled this particular preachment a labor in faith and i'm including a subtitle if you would this would be the thought a restoration rooted in faith can i get a witness somebody said amen thank you let us pray gracious and glorious father god sovereign savior and holy spirit god heavenly father i humble myself and i surrender my heart to your will your majesty and to your grace your will because it is your humble servant's desire to stay within your will your majesty for yours is the only marvelous majesty of the kingdom of god and i worship you your grace because i like others have stumbled in this garment of flesh and i am in need of your grace your word says that as i confess my sin you are faithful and just to forgive holy spirit god this invocational prayer is that you would be manifested not only in this place but in the hearts of every worshiper tuned into this broadcast touch them father god at their very souls letting them feel your very presence even in the midst of these otherwise trying uncomfortable socially distant pandemic circumstances comfort us lord and that by your glory divine give us an ear to hear only what thus says the lord at this time we're still trying to navigate this new norm i pray that you save those father god that you have purposed and ordained to save this day i pray father god that you speak through me the word that you have ordained for such a time as this that you would blot out my transgressions make me worthy to stand before your people and for you to speak through me to the hearts of the hearers that these gathered under the sound of my voice not hear me but hear and see only you my prayer and my petitions are to only you the only wise god the only true and living god i do pray in jesus name amen saints and beloved of god as i had already mentioned of being nerdsided that's the combination the crazy combination of being both nervous and excited and so i'm going to break the ice as i normally do when we're in the house with a little bit of humor is that all right thank you there's a funny and fictitious story of three hospital chaplains that said that their faith and ministry were so powerful that they said amongst themselves you know our ministry is so powerful that they said that they were gonna go and convert a bear that's right you heard that right they said they were gonna go amongst themselves and convert a bear so they actually decided each to confer the bear one being the catholic priest the other baptist preacher and the third a jewish rabbi so the first catholic priest came back before the others walking on crutches the other said well tell us what happened the catholic priest said my barry didn't want to be converted but i read to him the catechism and i sprinkled holy water on him and i preached adam with intense the intensity of my calling and after a time he responded to my message then it was the baptist preacher's turn and he went out to convert his bear i know a bear of all things he came back in a wheelchair the other guy said well what happened he said i tried to convert my beer he didn't want to be baptized but i wrestled with him and i wrestled with him i got him down under that water and when i brought him back up he was gentle and meek i had finally achieved my purpose and of course finally it was the jewish rabbi's turn he went out to convert his bear and he came back in a full body cast yep from the top of his head to the bottom of his foot the other two guys stood up and said well what happened when you tried to convert your bear he said yeah i tried to convert my beer but i discovered rather quickly that circumcision isn't where you want to begin just a little bit of humor to break the ice somebody say you're ready for the word of god are you all right then let's get started family labor day had its first recognition of a holiday in new york in 1882 the workers in new york were given the day off on that day september 5th in recognition of the hard work they had done to contribute to the progress of new york city other states seem to follow and begin to pick up the concept of giving their workers a day off in recognition in following new york this is recognition of their hard work and for all the contributions they made to their particular city and states and so it spread to about 23 different states from the initial recognition as in new york so that in june 1884 the federal government made a labor day made labor day a national holiday of which we are benefiting from today the reason for this federal holiday was to be an expression of appreciation to the american worker there was the recognition that america had risen and was rising to that place of prominence and that internationally in productivity in economic development and in innovation because of the uniqueness of the american worker and or laborer being able to produce in the context of freedom of course the whole american experience was an experience rooted in the concept of freedom that men would have the option to choose where they would employ their skills and expertise how they would maximize their abilities not only for the personal reward and compensation they themselves would receive but also for the advancement of the culture and this land called america yes america would advance because of the contributions of the american laborer and in recognition and in appreciation for the commitment of the american worker a day of recognition and yes celebration barbecue was instituted and it became the labor day national holiday it's a labor day worth celebrating in america church family we have this message this morning or this afternoon whichever is your tuning time to hear the oracles of god on how to exercise a labor of faith which is our first point and our second point would lastly be a restoration rooted in faith before i continue i'd like to ask how many of you are familiar with this pericope that is the particular story that is read in your hearing all right well if you give me a minute and allow me to give you some background i'll do so thank you i'll finish this morning lesson in about an hour or so no i'm just kidding okay so in the scriptures leading up to this text it says that the man of god namely elisha the prophet one day visited the town of sunum and came by a house where a wealthy woman lived and she urged the man of god to come in to have a meal and relax and after that whenever he was in the neighborhood he would drop by have a meal and he said that the woman went to her husband an older gentleman and said honey i know this is a holy man of god i want to build a room on the roof i'm going to drop by our local value city furniture maybe grab him a little futon or maybe the ikea grab a little nightstand and a lamp that way when he comes through on occasion he can just crash right here would that be all right and so it was done it said that when elijah stopped by one time he said to his servant gahesai go to the shunamites woman let her know i want to haul at her i need to ask her what can i do for her for the kindness she has shown us long story short she replied that she was content because she was affluent and living amongst her people in the land she didn't ask for anything in return so elijah asked his servant what can we do for her the heisei said i know she doesn't have a son and that her husband is an old man so elijah said well send for her again and she she came and he said this time next year you'll have a baby boy she said don't do that don't play with my emotions i didn't ask for anything but it is as he said she conceived and had a baby boy it said that as the boy was older he went out and he was laboring in the field with his father when he got ill suddenly he said his head hurt and subsequently he died mama got baby boy took him in her arms took him up and laid him on the futon in elijah's room and so here we are he said to hazel during our scripture text look the woman for strenum is coming then she said did i ask you for a son my lord and then i say don't deceive me and get my hopes up so this brings us to where elijah tells him to prepare himself to go and so elisha goes as he said that as long as the lord god lives and you live i'm not going without you the bible says the boy was indeed dead and elisha went in he shut the door behind him he went upstairs and he labored before the lord until the boy was brought back to life he called for the mother and he gave him to her alive and well somebody ought to shout hallelujah after some time and following the various miracles performed by elisha elisha returns to that small town and he went to the woman and he told the woman whose son he brought back to life take your family and move to some other place for the lord has called for famine on israel that will last for seven years and she did as the man of god said how many of you know that packing up and getting up and just moving out in the middle of a pandemic shifting everything in your life turning it upside down and around in the midst of this craziness would have to be a labor of faith amen a labor of faith how do we know that this thing that we're in the midst of is not what god is calling us into a labor of faith we stand before a holy god an awesome god a god that performs miracles for us every day i'll tell you one when i woke up this morning started myself on my way in my right mind concentrating and stayed on jesus likewise you are there getting up this morning breathing your lungs movement in your limbs being able to praise god and to shout onto the most high god thanking him for allowing you to move some of you may not have gotten a virus praise god and i thank god for that some of you may have taken nil and god has restored you and brought you out of that praise god for that but he wants us to labor in our faith god isn't surprised by this neither should you you should always know and it was said to me that this pandemic is in the respect of persons it attacks the young as well as the old the weak as well as the strong the rich as well as the poor yeah black and white is one of those things sometimes the outcome may be detrimental god forbid if it happens burrow down in your faith god is calling you to a labor in faith amen yes that was our first point a labor in faith and in closing as a witnessing a restoration rooted in faith i want you to take a look at our focal text i want to remind you of that focal text and gahesai was telling the king about the time elijah had brought a boy back to life at that very moment the mother of the boy walked in to make her appeal to the king about her house and her land look my lord king gahesa explained here is the woman now and this is her son the very one elijah brought back to life yes is it true the king asked and she told him the story and so he directed his officials to see that everything she had lost was restored to her including the value of any crops that had been harvested during her absence yes as hazel was telling the king about the time of elijah doing the miraculous how he brought back the boy to life he was enumerating everything that elijah had done over this seven years elisha if you go back and you read just the first six seven eight chapters of second kings you'll see that elisha i'm not saying elijah i am saying elisha was a great man of god a great prophet of god and he did a lot but as gahesai was talking he says look my lord the king here is that woman right now i can see him right now in my sanctified mind look my lord the king there's that woman right now and this is her son the very one elijah brought back to life am i the only one who can imagine that only a sovereign god has that impeccable timing while he is enumerating to the king all the miracles and deeds the prophet elijah had done the bible stated that before the entering of the shunamite woman and her grown and living son the king had just asked gehesia to tell him about the many miracles performed by the prophet elijah she comes in is this true the king asked her and she told him the story so he directed one of his officials to see that everything she had lost was restored to her including the value of the crops that had been harvested during her absence yes if you recall i mentioned to you that the prophet elijah had came back into the town [Music] of stronam and he spoke to the woman he said to go away somewhere he didn't elaborate where but he asked her to go away because the lord was going to bring a famine into the area that would last a period of seven years seven years i thank god that this creepy pandemic even though it's been 18 months maybe even 19 right at this point because we've entered in to september in the year of our lord 2021 and that this thing this ugly thing began back in march of 2020 i don't want it to last seven years and god forbid that it shall because god's going to do a great thing he's going to restore onto us because we are rooted in our faith and you see beloved of god that even in the midst of a pandemic this craziness called covent 19 god is saying that if we remain standing firm on our faith in him who is faith full that we will get through this it's not like god didn't see this coming this pause that some would say this is an interruption of life is god giving us an opportunity to return us to get back into his word and to turn into becoming a living and a restored saint rooted in faith that when we do return to our several households of faith that we will be able to strengthen and encourage one another with the several miraculous acts that god has performed on our behalf in the midst of this ugliness of this time and that is the fruit born of us in our labor and faith that only he can give amen yes i'm done but i'd like to share a story a story of faith if you don't mind there was a man and his son back working on a farm back some time ago it is said that the the man was farming on his land and his son was laboring right there with him when the sun looks up and he sees a cloud billowing in the distance he says dad what is that that i see billowing in the distance the father looks up he smells in the air and he says son that seems like a raging fire is coming our way i want you to stop what you're doing and i want you to run inside the house and gather some things for yourself maybe grab us some provisions while i go into our shed and grab some things i need you to bring it and throw it in the back of the wagon and be there prepared for us to leave as this fire is impending and approaching fast so the son runs into the house in haste he's trying to gather all the things that he can hurriedly and he's running out he throws everything into the back of the wagon and he's saying daddy daddy hurry i see that the fire is pending and it's on its way the father came out with an axe some picks and shovels also trying to juggle a can of some kerosene and gasoline he throws them in the back of the wagon and they jump in they hitch the horse and they get up they're running away and the boy looks back and he says dad the fire is gaining the fire is behind our house and it's almost overtaking our farm the father said son don't worry stand firm in faith the boy said daddy i'm scared he said son don't worry stand firm in faith so he's going as fast as he can the horse is getting up and he's pulling the wagon as fast as he can in front of him the father is trying to make some distance between where the house was and the farm was behind between him and that raging fire he gets up in the distance and he looks back and he sees that the house is being overwhelmed and engulfed with flames it's coming as if the fire is just coming like a raging witch to come and consume them the boy said daddy daddy i'm scared this fire's raging he said son don't worry he jumps out of the wagon and son says daddy we must keep moving the fire the fire is raging and it's going to consume us he said don't worry son stand on your faith so he jumps out and he starts digging a ditch around the wagon he starts whacking at some of the the debris inside the ditch then he grabs the kerosene and the gasoline and he pours it in the ditch and he runs around the whole circumference surrounding the wagon the father lights that ditch on fire and it's gone up it's burning it's burning and the boy is still standing on the wagon he said daddy daddy that fire is coming daddy i'm scared he said son stand and stand firm on your faith so the boy ran over to his father and he embraced him and he hugged him and he's looking at the fires the fire is getting bigger bigger closer and closer taking care of everything in its way but the fire as it approached him the boy closes his eye and clings further to his father and his father hugs him and he says stand firm in the faith the boy hears is he opens his eyes he looks around and he sees that the fire is going around the full wagon the boy looks at his daddy with tears in his eyes and he said daddy the raging fire passes us right by and he said yes son i want to tell you that the fire cannot consume that which was already burnt and when we go through an experience like a pandemic we get burnt and torn but god asks us to stand on our faith because we will not be consumed as we stand on the root of our faith god bless your growth i ask that you would just keep us in your prayer and stand firm in the promises of god and remember stay ahold of your faith because god is gonna bless you and he's gonna restore you according to your faith amen eternal god our father i ask right now in the magnificent in the matchless name of jesus the christ that father god you would bless these your hearers father god i don't take it lightly that there may be someone under the sound of my voice that is not yet profess their faith in jesus christ the son of the living god the son of god that was sent to die at calvary's cross for the remission of our sins father god i ask that you would just hear that one's petition and that one's cry father god ask that you would restore them father god bring them back into remembrance that you and only you can save them and deliver them it is by the shed blood at calvary's cross that our sins and transgressions have been blotted out likewise father i ask that if there may be some that have transgress and backslidden as i've mentioned that being in this sleeve of flesh that we do i ask father god that we confess our sins as you've said in your holy word that you are faithful and just to forgive us and i ask that those that stand with a judgmental eye father god be let known that you will judge them according to the standard that they put against one if they see another one stumbled father god they should not stand in condemnation or in judgment but father god lift their fallen brother or sister up father god i asked father god that you would bless them and keep them make your face shine upon them and be gracious unto them lift up your countenance upon them and always give them peace especially the peace that surpasses all understanding that only keeping our minds stayed on jesus the christ can give this is your honorable servant's prayer in the matchless and the magnificent name of jesus the christ i do seal this prayer amen [Music] oh grove you know we serve almighty god and during these times
