gifts we have four ways of worshiping and giving at the mount olive church you can give your contribution today through the mail through giblify through the portal on our website and also through the text which you can find again on our website we encourage you to give and let us give generously let us give honestly as we have been the beneficiaries of so much of god's kindness directed toward us so let us show our gratitude and our appreciation for all that god has done for us by giving first the tenth the tithe and then an offering we also encourage you in this moment in which we have seen so many natural disasters to continue to give to our brothers and sisters in haiti who are in desperate need i know that we have a need in new orleans but for the next two weeks i want to still focus on haiti and then we will turn our attention to new orleans for new orleans has a federal government that may be a little slow but haiti has a lack of central infrastructure so they need us desperately and wherever people are in need we are here to help so let us consider giving a gift above and beyond our normal tithe and offering so that we can be of value and of benefit to the kingdom of god let us pray for this offering and let us give god our sin serious thanks for all that he's done for us let us pray eternal god we are grateful for the myriad ways in which you bless us and keep us and provide for us sustain us and protect us so now we show our appreciation and our gratitude by giving our gifts to you this day first and foremost before we give dollars and cents we offer you our hearts fully for we know that when you touch our hearts then you will govern our pocketbooks so we give ourselves now to you and we then pour out generously from a grateful spirit for all that you have done and we recognize every good and perfect gift does indeed come down from you so receive our thanks receive our offerings receive our gifts as a token of response and allow them dear god to be used for the furtherance of your kingdom and its work here on earth in the name of your great son jesus the christ we pray amen [Music] good morning and here are your announcements for sunday your announcements for sunday september 5th listen you can use anything lord you can use me you can use anything long can you use anything lord you can use me [Music] lord you can use me call moses from the wilderness and you put a rod in his hand [Music] can you speak you can [Music] use and that mighty giant fell [Music] he proved to his people [Music] that god was alive and he's right so lord i'm available too he took two fish and five loaves of bread [Music] lord what i have may not be much [Music] but i know you can occupy it with me [Music] [Music] you [Music] [Music] me [Music] internally so we ask that you be patient with us we're not experts we're not complete but god is trying to use us and so pray that there is a restoration of the technologists let us now turn our attention to the word of god which comes to us today from the book of acts chapter 9 verses 1 through 19. do not be alarmed our long-standing covenant holds that if i must read a long passage of scripture that that does not necessarily even threats and murder against the disciples of the lord went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at damascus so that if he found any who belonged to the way men or women he might bring them bound to jerusalem now as he was going along and approaching damascus suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him saul saul why do you persecute me he asked who are you lord the reply came i am jesus whom you are persecuting but get up and enter the city and you will be told what you are to do the men who were traveling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw no one saul got up from the ground and though his eyes were open he could see nothing so they led him by the hand and brought him into damascus for three days he was without sight and neither ate nor drank now there was a disciple in damascus named ananias the lord said to him in a vision ananias he answered here i am lord the lord said to him get up and go to the street called straight and at the house of judas look for a man of tarsus named saul at that at this moment he is praying and he has seen in the vision a man named ananias come in and lay hands on him so that he might regain his sight but ananias answered lord i have heard much i have heard from many about this man how much evil he has done to your saints in jerusalem and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name but the lord said to him go for he is an instrument whom i have chosen to bring my name before gentiles and kings and before the people of israel i myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name so ananias went and entered the house he laid his hands on saul and said brother saul the lord jesus who appeared to you on your way here has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the holy spirit and immediately something like scales fell from his eyes and his eye and his sight was restored then he got up and was baptized and after taking some food he regained his strength thus ends the reading of the word amen i won't talk just for a few moments from the subject blinded by the light blinded by the light according to our text this morning an odd occurrence is taking place the peculiarity of the event is filled with paradoxical intensity the church is growing however its growth is not attributable to conventional means there is no fiery revival nor is there an effective evangelism strategy no the church is growing because of persecution and in god's providential insurance policy the overlooked fine print reads that sometimes our greatest growth comes through our greatest pain the church is growing during persecution the church is growing because of persecution and the church is growing in spite of persecution and one of the principal catalysts for this persecution is a young bigoted zealot pharisee by the name of saul of tarsus the bible here says that saul has grown his his reputation for zeal has skyrocketed and gleaned the attention of the religious authorities who upon his appeal grant him subpoena powers to be an extra ecclesiastical uh legal body uh so that he can play both judge and jury to anyone who professes publicly the name of jesus christ he asks the high priest for permission to carry out his heinous and pernicious plan down in damascus and on the way to damascus the bible says he has an encounter with jesus he's knocked down to the ground and blinded by the light he can not see though his eyes are wide open the experience leaves him with eyes wide shut and blinded by the light it is an unusual depiction in scripture because the experience is full of contradictions light is something that we usually think of in a positive fashion light brings warmth but saul here experiences uh the frosty chill of disorientation light provides enlightenment but paul here has a baffling confusion light gives the glow of orientation so that we can make sense of our environment but paul here experiences the cloudiness of chaos light brings with it clarity and focus but paul here has a crippling paralysis because he's down on the ground blinded by the light and that's because beloved our greatest growth often comes through our greatest pain i submit to you today that sometimes our encounters with god are deconstructive before they are reconstructed god will break you in order to build you god may deflate you before god inflates you god may set you back before god may set you up this process of deconstruction is designed not to destroy but to diagnose it is a refinement process where the usable dimensions of our lives are retained and the useless aspects of our lives are discarded god loves us so much that god is always working on us so if i'm not what you think i ought to be and if i don't please you in my demeanor please be patient with me for god is not through with me yet in fact god is not through with any of us yet for god keeps on working and god works in the best of us as well as the worst of us god is always working on his creation and god's people god is working on the good but he's also working on the bad god is working on the habitual liar the serial sex offender the thief on wall street the neglectful parent the vaccinated and the unvaccinated and if god can turn the persecutor of the church into his most influential preacher then i know god can turn your life around in fact i ought to have a witness somewhere online this morning that we'll put in the chat i know he's working on me because i'm not what i used to be but praise i'm not what i'm gonna be but praise god i'm not what i used to be he's still working on me morning by morning grace by grace big by bit god is still working on me challenged by challenge the lord is working on all of us [Music] and it is in the moment of encounter where we may be blinded and oblivious to god's work and framework that god continues to move and i submit to you that when we look at this passage of scripture there are three elements that we often downplay in the human holy engagement three aspects that we really don't see or perceive that god is up to something in our lives for there is no life that is beyond redemption and there is no life that god cannot restore nor redeem there are three things here that i submit to you that happen in the human holy engagement that take place in the text but more importantly in each of our lives the first thing that i lift up from the passage that we see is that there is holy orchestration look at the passage saul who will become the legendary paul has petitioned for subpoena powers to make his way to damascus on his way to damascus he encounters jesus christ whom he has really no understanding of other than jesus is an offense to his own religious sensibilities paul is knocked down paul is blinded paul is defeated paul is weak but notice the passage while paul is doing all that paul is doing god is doing something behind the scenes for the bible says that while paul is doing that meanwhile there is a brother by the name of ananias whom god is also working with don't you see it beloved paul is down but ananias is going to restore him paul is blind but ananias is going to bring sight god is always working in our lives in ways that we can see and cannot see to bring us to moments of encounter with him god wants to get your attention and so god sometimes has to move but god is always orchestrating yes you can say no yes you can be hard-headed yes you can be a durham but god is still moving in the cracks and crevices of your existence to bring you face to face with him praise be to god god is always orchestrating encounters and so beloved you didn't get that preferred job but god was moving you got stuck in traffic and slowed down your pace and you were late to your appointment but god was orchestrating an encounter the relationship fell apart so that you could have a face-to-face meeting with the eternal god is always working things out so that we can have an encounter with him and i submit to you beloved this morning i know full well from personal experience for every week when i prepare to dawn the pulpit and mount the sacred desk invariably the subject matter of the sermon gets tested in real life before i can even get to the pulpit if i'm talking about something god will give me an opportunity to encounter the membership that will concretize the message somebody from my staff will call me and say pastor so-and-so went to the hospital and that's the sunday that i'm talking about healing pastor somebody's loved one made their transition and is no longer with us that's the sunday that i'm preaching about eternal life somebody will call me and say i lost my job and that's the topic of the message that sunday faith in jesus christ i'm here to tell you that god is always moving in your life to bring you face to face with him there's holy orchestration and then beloved there is divine designation for here ananias tells us in his objections and in his suspicions as god is orchestrating paul's life to become more than what he presently is ananiah says but wait a minute lord i've heard a whole lot about this brother isn't he the same paul that that held the coats while they stoned stephen indeed saint paul that ran from house to house pulling men and women out so that they could be incarcerated because of their commitment it missed the same paul that i heard about in jerusalem but and now it's coming to damascus to do the same thing to which jesus tells ananias yes it's the same paul but this paul knows he doesn't know what i know for i know says jesus that he's an instrument whom i've chosen to bring the word of god to the gentiles to stand before kings and to make known my way before the jewish people you see beloved all of us are designated at birth and before birth with a divine assignment that we must carry out in life and our life's uh journey is really the effort to find why you came here why you're here and while we are often like paul blinded and sidetracked sidetracked by eternity trying to figure out what the lord wants us to do i'm here to tell you that the lord knows your assignment and god will reveal in time in his way in his orchestrations your divine assignment i need you to understand this morning that you are not a accident of biology you're not a circumstance of of your community and culture but god brought you to existence for you to do something you got a task for the kingdom you got a job in the army of the lord you got an assignment that must be fulfilled and only you can do your assignment for nobody can sing the song like you sing it nobody can pray the prayer like you pray and nobody can do it like you do it there's something that the lord wants of you that you may not understand right now but hold on just a little while longer god will show you what you come to to to existence for there is a divine designation everybody has an assignment then beloved there is an a third element to this engagement between the human and the holy that we often fail to comprehend and it is this there is a converted continuation uh here look at the passage paul has a fervor that causes and creates a great deal of hatred for the church but it is this same zeal that god will take to make him the beloved pastor and organizer of churches in other words the way paul hated the church is the same fervor that god will use for him to love jesus his church and people of all ilks and kinds you see it's a converted continuation often we think that when we come to jesus that god wipes the slate clean and takes everything about our dynamic personalities and no longer uses it but makes it completely brand new but i'm here to tell you that the newness is not so much a a a re uh visitation of who you are but it really is a conversion of who you are and all we've got to do is look throughout scripture to discover this converted continuation moses who had a sense of social justice so that when he saw an egyptian treating harshly a hebrew killed the egyptian and hid his body in the sand it's that same passion for what's right that would again god would then use to have moses stand before pharaoh and tell him let my people go it's pete that's the same process where peter who would fish for carp and and bass and other kinds of fish as a profession would then take the same skills the same passion and the same energy and god would say i'm going to make you a fisher of people god has a way of converting our passion so that we do what we like to do but we just do it now for a different cause and for a different person somebody here ought to testify i'm doing what i like to do i used to do it in the world but now i'm doing it for the lord i used to do it for money but now i'm doing it for the kingdom i used to do it for for my own aggrandizement but now i'm doing it to help somebody as i pass along so my living will not be in vain let me see if i can't put some legs on this thing so that it walks through the corridors of your consciousness i have a real good pastor friend of mine who in his youth worked in his grandfather's shoe shine and shoe repair shop and he tells me that one of his responsibilities was to clean up the shop to sell canned penny candy to those who would come in but one of his most dreaded tasks was to clean the bathrooms he hated cleaning the bathrooms it was a public place and his grandfather as the proprietor would allow folks to come in and use the bathrooms as they may not have been given opportunity to use them in other settings he would have to clean up the bathroom and he hated cleaning up the bathroom toilets would be nasty the environment would be funky but but he says and now i'm a pastor and ain't much changed i'm still cleaning up other folks you can supply whatever you want to but but i'm doing it for jesus i i'm cleaning up uh mis uh miscommunications i'm cleaning up injustices i'm cleaning up other people's messes my job hadn't changed but who i'm doing it for and why i'm doing it for has changed i've decided to use all of my gifts my talents and my abilities for the furtherance of the work of the kingdom and i submit to you beloved today that that is our task as we look back over our lives we too like paul are guilty of something none of us can stand in the mirror with a totally clean slate and a clear conscience all of us have done something but because of our connection with the christ because we had like paul a damascus road experience somewhere on the journey jesus got a hold of us and start converting our situations converting our consciousness converting our appetites converting our desires and our passions so that it changes the trajectory of life paul here has an encounter with jesus on the damascus road and it changes the trajectory of his life the persecutor will now become the preacher the enemy will now become an ally the one who hated will now become a lover of people's souls ananias according to the text played a critical role for it was ananias who goes down to a street called straight places his hands on a blinded paul and says paul i know you've been praying and i know you've had a vision about my coming in to your life i'm going to place my hands on you and when you get up you're going to be a new man i'm going to place my hands on you and when you get baptized you're going to be strengthened i'm going to put on put my hands on you and the scales will fall from your eyes and then you'll see that the lord has a job for you to do ananias placed his hands on paul and the bible says that the something like scales fell from his eyes paul was deconstructed in order to be reconstructed and then the text says that paul ate and got up and gained his strength is almost to say it's time for me to be about my father's business it's time for me to offer myself to the one who struck me down it's time that i'm uh busy about my purpose i've wasted enough time i spent too many restless hours i can not say that i've applied all my resources to my kingdom purpose but from this day forward i'm going to decide one thing i'm going to decide to follow jesus all of the way i wonder do i have anybody here listening this morning that can say i met him on my journey and he touched my life changed my heart converted my mind up strengthened my body gave me a new way of walking and a new way of talking and i'm not going back to where i came from but i'm gonna follow jesus all of the way i'm going with him through hell in high water i'm going with him for where he leads me i'm going to follow i'm going with jesus cause he never failed me yet i'm going with jesus because i know he's got my back i'm going with jesus because father on up the road he's got a blessing somewhere prepared for me i'm following him because i know he's right is there anybody here that can say today i have decided to follow jesus he's my life changer he's my waymaker in my friend that sticks closer than a brother i'm gonna follow jesus cause he's my mother when i'm motherless he's my father when i'm fatherless he's my way out of no way i will i will for i will follow him because [Music] he's never ever so if there is one today who is becoming acquainted with the purpose of your existence you've wondered why i'm here why i've gone through all of the mess and the hell that i've gone through why did god open certain doors for me when i did not deserve them it's because beloved god is still orchestrating our existence to have a encounter with the eternal that will define our existence and will change the trajectory of each of our lives so if that fits your case today if that is a description of your existence then i invite you to call that number that you find at the bottom of your screen someone will help you just like ananias helped paul to have the scales fall from your eyes and you to come into a greater awareness if you've been blinded by the light of eternity for the purposes of deconstruction so that god can set you up for a brighter future for more meaningful existence then won't you call for this is the moment of decision this is the hour in which we have prepared for weeks so that you might come to an awareness of god in your life and what god desires of you and ultimately god desires not just your hands not just your pocket books not just your families or your most cherished possessions but god desires a heart that is inclined toward him so beloved if you want to walk in a new way if you want to talk in a new way if you want a new experience with the divine know that the hell that you've gone through is not to destroy you but to really help you become who you need to be in god and we are all under the process of metamorphosis so as you are changing won't you consider joining us here at the mount olive church though we are still in virtual space the word is still the word the worship is still effective and god is still real so we encourage you now to unite with us join us share with us in the process of membership help us to carry out the kingdoms of gender assigned to this body of christ and we will warmly embrace and welcome you as those of us who are part of god's family we extend you now the invitation to christian discipleship whomsoever will let him or her come and those who have prayer requests we ask that you would now forward those place them in the chat so that we can pray for them in a matter of moments to follow jesus i have decided [Applause] to follow jesus i have decided to follow jesus [Music] turning by [Music] [Music] to follow you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] still i will know [Music] [Music] still i will fall [Applause] [Music] this morning i share beloved with you the the request of god's people for prayer and as i pray for them i ask that you would also lift these concerns in your own moments of prayer we have prayer requests for a newly formed family which is having challenges but is filled with love there's a prayer request for brenda fagins who's recovering from surgery there's a prayer request for the parson family some of whom have contracted coving there may be other requests that as they are coming in we lift them and we know our nation right now is seems as if it's in a series of catastrophes one after the other [Music] earthquakes hurricanes fires political instability but beloved while all that is going on around us our feet are firmly planted in the soils of an eternal savior whose foundation cannot fail we are standing on the rock of jesus christ and so while others all around us may be sinking sand we are firmly planted in a reality that has not that will not that emphatically cannot fail so let us pray god we thank you for the day we thank you for the privilege of prayer we thank you for these requests that have been made by your people and we lift them and take them as holy concerns we don't do this cavalierly or lightly because it is routine but god we recognize that there are sheep in your pasture who are struggling some are stronger than others some are more capable and capable than others but god you are concerned about every member of your flock from the weakest to the strongest and all who are in between so whatever ails us whatever causes suffering god we know that it touches your heart today so out of the abundance of who you are reach out to us dear god in our blindness in our crookedness in our misunderstandings and speak to us in a way that will redirect us that will change us from meaninglessness to purposefulness that will alter our consciousness from bigotry to love from selfishness to community and many other ways oh god we pray now for all of these who have made requests today and those who have yet to type it in or to speak it before you or to share it with any some things are too private to share but god you know everything about us so we just lift those concerns before you even now and lord as we look at the landscape of our world the topography is troubling but we are built on nothing less than the blood of your son and his righteousness so god as our children are going back to school and contracting covet at greater and more swift rates we pray god that you would just build a hedge of protection around every school teacher around every student around every administrator every school board so that dear god this virus would be put on the back burner at some point we ask that you would bless all of those who are on the front lines those who are restoring power in new orleans and in the northeast those who are digging rubble in haiti those who are putting out fires in the west god fatigue is natural but be now thou their strength uphold them with your powerful right hand and allow them not to fail god for all of these requests and more we give to you for you have commanded us to cast our cares upon you because of your caring concern for us so god we leave it with you right now whatever perplexes us we lay it gently at your feet whatever concerns us we lay it gently at your feet whatever troubles us we lay it gently at your feet whatever caused us to toss and turn last night and avoid a peaceful night we lay it at your feet knowing that what's at your feet is already in your control for there is nothing that is beyond your control because you have all power in heaven and earth in your hands so god tenderly gently compassionately and if necessary sternly look after your children and it is our prayer in that exalted name of jesus christ that gives us the confidence that you will indeed hear and answer our prayers so we pray according to your will and not ours the blessed matchless and majestic name of jesus who is called the christ and god's people said together amen [Music] not a second nor another minute not an hour another day but at this moment with my arms outstretched lord i need you to make a way as you have done so many times before through a window or an open door i stretch my hands to thee come rescue me i need you right away i need [Music] not another [Music] i need you lord right away [Music] we come to this moment of the table recognizing that we cannot be together in person but we are united in spirit around the table and so though our presence is far apart from one another we are still conjoined by the meaning and the purpose and the power of this sacred meal the bible says that on the night in which jesus was betrayed he gathered unto himself in an upper room his disciples and there he took bread and broke it and gave it to each of them and he said take eat this is my body which is given for you likewise he took the cup with the fruit of the vine and after having given thanks he gave it to each of them and said take drinky all of it for we shall not drink it again until we drink it anew in my father's kingdom for this cup represents the new covenant the new testament in my blood for without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin for as often as you do this the breaking of this bread and the drinking of this cup you do show my death until i come again we cannot thank god the way jesus did that thursday night at the table but we can thank him for what this meal means for us today so let us in the admonition of this henchman who will become holy and a herald of the gospel of jesus christ paul let us examine ourselves in this moment before we participate at the table let us pray god we bow in humble submission to your will we acknowledge your sovereignty and your right to rule you are god and we are your creation so master have your way among us and with us in every way imaginable and possible we surrender ourselves to your will and we do so as we come to observe the ordinance of this table we're going to eat bread we're going to drink from the cup but all of that means so much more than just a meal it means for us dear god that you offered yourself as a sacrifice to others and likewise we should offer ourselves to others sometimes that may be in harm's way sometimes that may be inconvenient in convenience but however dear god we pray that our offerings of ourselves would be honored by you and would be to build your kingdom now god forgive us of our sins [Music] for our unwelcoming spirit at times for our inability to move beyond ritual to meaning forgive us and accept our thanks in jesus name amen [Music] as often as you do this you do remember me let us eat together and let us drink together the bible says that when they had concluded that sacred meal they sang a hymn and went into the mountain of olives we don't know what proverbial amount of olives lies in your destiny but wherever you go take the name of jesus with you beloved let us be reminded that on next weekend or this coming weekend we will celebrate our men's day so on saturday our own deacon nolan bivens will be the instructor
