Moving On From Small Thinking

[Music] so I want to invite your attention to the Book of Numbers chapter number 13 beginning at verse 31 I teach from the Bible the Bible is a book I believe that tells us its own purpose a lot of people get confused about the Bible just like a lot just like you'd be confused about a phone if you don't know why it exists does that make sense some people might look at your phone and say what is this well it's easy to judge it if you don't know the purpose of it the Bible is not a history book the Bible tells us what we need to know about itself it says the Bible says that its purpose is to make us wise unto salvation is to tell us the things that we need to know about life and God to live the life God intended it's not a book that's supposed to answer all the non consequential questions you have about life why aren't dinosaurs in the Bible it has nothing to do with your salvation that's why it's not in the Bible am I making sense yeah this is basic instruction before leaving Earth and so in the Book of Numbers chapter 13 verse 31 there's a small story I believe contains a lesson for us it says but the man who had growing up with him said we can't attack those people they are stronger than we are they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored they said the land we explore devours those living in it and all the people we saw there of great size we saw the Nephilim there we saw the descendants of anak come from Nephilim and listen to this we seem like grasshoppers in our own eyes and we looked the same to them we seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes and we looked the same to them we seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes and we looked the same to them I want to use that last statement as a subject for this sermon and I want to talk about in the second installment about moving on series I want to talk about moving on from small thinking moving on from small thinking you've often heard me frequently float from this pulpit that I was reared and raised in a small town in Mississippi not a lot of options for extracurricular activities so we engaged in the sport of television watching and one of the shows that I can recall and remember regularly watching was a show some of my Millennials you're not gonna feel me on this one The Jeffersons somebody say Jeffersons Jeffersons ended up being one of the longest-running urban sitcoms in the history of American television and this show had a song that was associated with it that was just as popular as the content of the show itself there was a part of the song I believe is salient for this sermon it says movin on up to the east side to a deluxe apartment in the sky moving on up to the east side we finally got a piece and although that song and show is not spiritual in its origin it is spiritually significant for our sermon today there is redemptive value in the words of that song because the sentiments of the song I believe express the sentiments of our Savior it is God's desire and design that we be a people of progression so I'm not suggesting that progression can be measured in geographical changes I'm not saying you got to move from Queens to Manhattan them I'm not suggesting that we have to move geographically but I am suggesting God wants us to progress spiritually wave at me if you here today okay everybody good okay that he wants us to progress spiritually well we grow stronger in our spiritual core cuz as you go spiritually everything goes growing spiritually doesn't fix everything but growing spiritually improves everything when you grow spiritually you become a better spouse when you come when you grow spiritually become a better friend when you grow spiritually become a better parent when you grow spiritually become a better employee or employer when you grow spiritually you become a better son a daughter a parent am I making sense it's the core so he wants us to progress spiritually he wants us to progress emotionally well the emotional quality of our life increases and improves to the degree and dimension that we begin to display what Paul calls in Galatians the fruit of the Spirit and we begin to live with joy how many want that peace temperance kindness meekness long-suffering God wants to upgrade us emotionally he wants us to move on up relationally because the course and the quality of our life is not just talking about who we are where we are is determine about who we with God wants us to have the right people in our life and the right people in the right places so our God is a God of progression he desires that we be people of progression he wants us to move on up but the song teaches us that in order to move on up we must be willing to move on man this series is about us mastering the art of the exit because people who end up in cycles where they are stuck and stagnant are people who have not mastered the art of the exit and our God is the god of progression can I hear a man in the house and so many of us have various areas where we need to consider moving on but in our time together today I want to nudge us by using God's Word to encourage us to move on listen to me from small thinking because this this passage this text this scripture this story that we just read family teaches us right here in numbers that the most consequential opinion in your life is your opinion of yourself oh did you hear that the most consequential opinion in your life is your opinion of yourself this story right here in numbers shows you and I that the reason people stay stuck is not because of what Giants think of them or what God thinks of them but the text teaches us that the reason people stay stuck is because of what they make of themselves it's right here in the text we read it we are s grasshoppers in our own eyes see it doesn't matter to what people think about us if you don't believe it and it doesn't matter what God thinks about us if you don't believe it oh did you hear what I said yeah see God can think you're forgiven but if you don't believe it you won't experience it God could say you are not condemned there is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus but if you don't believe it you won't experience it and scripture corroborates my claim Solomon says as a man thinks in his heart so is he in other words stuck lives are a fruit of stuck minds where my mind is my life will follow and the enemy is aware of this and all throughout scripture he has been attempting to inhibit God's people from advancing by infecting them with a flawed sense of identity what if I told you in the book of Genesis the book of beginnings the book that reveals to us kind of the origins of the human race and the human species what if I told you in that book that Eve didn't eat the apple or whatever the fruit was because she was hungry what if I told you she didn't eat it because her stomach was growling what if I told you she ate it because she did not have an accurate understanding of who she was what if I what if I told you in Genesis 3 where she has this exchange with the serpent the issue is don't get caught up in the the details of the story so that you miss the message of the story right this were some people who don't know how to read the Bible right they get it you mean to tell me your snake was talking it's like you're getting in the details of the story like you don't you believe that no you're not reading it right the points not the details of the story it's the message they were inner garden they were surrounded by animals so Satan coming up like a snake is a revelation of him showing up looking like he belongs because the devil don't show up looking like the devil he show up at your job looking like your coworkers he show up at the family reunion looking like your cousin and he show up in church looking like a Christian that's the point the devil doesn't show up looking like the devil so Eve is engaging with the serpent cuz she don't know he's one and so she's engaged with him and Satan says no no no listen now God told you not to eat from that cuz he insecure I'm not I'm not gonna bother that he got her with hater obsession god I ain't even thinking about even like that but Satan got me believing God trying to hold her back in this some some people think you jealous of them and you like if you really know I love you ain't even thinking about you I don't it okay let me go this everybody hating on me nobody's hate it no we're not all these hate no you don't have no you don't have those many haters no we're not he says here's the point he says much said he says um God knows if you eat that fruit you're gonna be like him see that's not a lie is what the Bible calls guy although so it's not like an outright lie but it's taking the truth and using it in a way that's deceptive watch this that's Genesis 3 so he's like okay yeah okay all right so she eats the fruit that's Genesis 3 but in Genesis 1 when God creates the human species before he engages in creation he has a conversation with himself trendy and he says let us make man in our own image and in our own likeness now notice Satan said you'll be like God that's Genesis 3 Genesis 1 God created the human species in his likeness Satan did say you would be God he said you'd be like God that's Genesis 3 but in Genesis 1 the human species was created in God's likeness so Eve eats the fruit trying to become something she already was but she didn't know it cuz nobody told her I just stopped by the last service of the day service number by this weekend to tell somebody you fearfully and wonderfully made to tell somebody can't nobody beat you being you to tell somebody when you try to be me you are robbing the world of what God put in you so Eve believed the serpent cuz the serpent got to her first and some people are wrestling with who they are because they're wrestling with the words of somebody to gather them first they don't feel worried because somebody got to them first they don't feel good enough because somebody got to them first they don't feel significant because somebody got to them first and God may not have had the first word but I came to tell you he's gonna have the last word you are not where you come from you are not what you've done you are exactly who he says that you are God wants to have the final word and just like the enemy did this was Eve in the garden he did it with the people in this passage in numbers 13 in the wilderness Book of Numbers is kind of an interesting book it's a complex book it's called numbers because part of the book is a census so it's a book that's a combination of a census and some stories so to understand the story in numbers 13 you really got to understand contextually the book of Exodus and the Bible says in the book of Exodus that there's a group of people they go by the name Israelites who have been in Egyptian captivity for over 400 years so at some point they get sick and tired of being sick and tired I'm not gonna bother this but they stay there until they ask God to get them out because sometimes we think we waiting on God and God is waiting on us so they cry out to God they say God we need deliverance they say that to God God finds a man named Moses minding his own business and tells Moses I want you to be a deliverer they take talk to God say we won't deliverance God talks to Moses they talk to God God talks to Moses I don't know about you that bothered me a little bit because when I got a problem and I talked to God about my problem I want God to talk to me Jesus we got a situation what are we gonna do about this am I the only one I'm not only one no like God I want you to wave at me if you feel me wait vegetable okay yes like yeah I want I want you to talk to me I've taught you this before but for those who have never heard in for those that need to be reminded maybe you've gone through something just because God is not talking to you about the problem does not mean God's not working on the answer sometimes God isn't talking to you because he's talking to your Moses here's the issue though God's talking to Moses and Moses his insecurity is talking back to God cuz Moses had a problem with speech and he was really insecure about it so when God says to him I want to use you to speak to Pharaoh and tell Pharaoh to let my people go Moses is like you got the wrong one because you're calling me to do something in an area I'm uncomfortable in so God talks to Moses and Moses insecurity starts talking back so Israel's deliverance is delayed because Moses can't get over himself Israel's deliverance is held hostage to Moses his wrestling match with his own insecurities who's waiting on you to get over you who's waiting on your yes there's something on the other side of your yes your yes isn't just about you your yes is about others and when you refuse to step into the fullness of who God's called you to be because you allow insecurities to imprison you you are robbing us of what God wants to use you to bring to our lives because there's something else on the other side of your yes so he's got these insecurities about his inability she's got him thinking small not only is he probably insecure about his inability he's probably insecure about his issues because Moses had to pass he killed a man in the past and then beer at the body all of us had done that but all of us have some bodies buried and you like Jesus Easter was last week you resurrect yourself leave all of that right in the where's the real section imma find it right here okay okay yes Jesus Easter was last week everybody got some stuff that they want to stay buried made him made him insecure so God tells Moses he never argues with Moses about his insecurities he just promises Moses he's gonna give him assistance he says okay when you say yes I'm sending Aaron to help you Aaron was Moses his brother and Aaron was going to help Moses with the speaking part but Aaron wouldn't come until Moses said yes cuz your help doesn't come before the yes the help comes after the yes a lot of times we want to see the help then we say yes Lord show me how then I'll say yes come through then I'll say yes he says no you offer me Isaac then I'll show you the ramp listen to this so God tells Moses all right I want you to go tell Israel I'm gonna lead them out of Egypt but I'm taking them to a specific place called Canaan Canaan represents the kind of life that Jesus wants to lead you and me into everybody following me there all right remember the Bible is a book of metaphors you gotta get that when people don't get that they get caught up on stuff they should not get caught up on if Adam and Eve was the first man they had children how many how many other people have other people who marry who brother you you missing the point that's not what a Bible exists watch this Keenan is a metaphor for the life Jesus wants to lead us into wave at me if you're still here all right so God told Moses I'm gonna take you to Canaan but he didn't tell him when and he didn't tell him the way so Israel's coming out of Egypt thinking they're going right from Egypt right to Canaan but to go straight to Canaan they had to go through a land called the Philistines and the Philistines was we're not going to allow Israel to go through without a fight so God says I got to take y'all around the Philistine country because if you go to Philistine country and you get in war prematurely you're gonna go back to Egypt got me because God knows what battles will make you backslide right God says okay I gotta take you through a place that's not as occupied it's the desert and it's called the wilderness and I gotta take you through that place because even though you're out of Egypt Egypt is not out of you yet and so you've been slaves for 400 years so you hope you don't think like soldiers yet so I leave some time to shift your mindset cuz for you to step into all I got for you you have to move from a slave mentality to a soldier you got a move lead from a victim mentality to a Victorian tality so I lead to some time to process you someone take you through the wilderness now some of you have you've been here for a while you heard me teach on the wilderness but we get new people all the time and so I need to teach this the wilderness represents the Bible is a book of metaphors the wilderness represents transitional seasons it represents a season in life where you're not in Egypt but you're not in Canaan you're not where you used to be but you're not where you're going to be you are you hear me things are not as bad as they used to be but they're not as good as they're going to be it represents a transitional season it's a season God puts you in right before he gets ready to elevate you to another level if you in the wilderness that's not a time for a pity party the wilderness is a time for praise party because on the other side of the wilderness is cleaning listen the wilderness was a place that is almost like a hub in an airport sometimes I might fly I don't know sometimes I might fly I'm not recommending the airlines ain't not giving me any money no but sometimes I might fly an airline that has a hub let's say airline has a hub in Atlanta right okay so let's say if I'm going from here to Chicago and I and I got to leave from Philly go to Atlanta so Atlanta is the hub so there are some people who might be on the plane with me from Billy to Atlanta that aren't on the plane with me from Atlanta to Chicago I had to they had to get dropped off at the hook nothing wrong with them but our destinies are going in two different directions so we could only be on the plane together for a certain season nothing wrong with you nothing wrong with me we just got to different destinations did you hear what I just said yeah and the wilderness is a season where God allows some people to get off your plane not because something's wrong with you or them but because your destiny requires that you go in two different directions I know you've been for instance high school but your planes are going in two different directions I knew you grew up together but your planes are going in two different directions not only are people on the plane that get dropped off bags are on the plan some baggage that you carry it with you to Atlanta have to get dropped off cuz that can go to Chicago and when God drops you in the wilderness season it's because there's some baggage that you've been carrying this fall that you're playing cane hole where you going anybody got some stuff you need to drop off anybody say I'm tired of carrying this this can't go where God is getting ready to take me God presses pause because when you get to Canaan Canaan has enough battles and you can't be fighting them and you at the same time I just said something and you didn't get it I said you there's a level you get to where the level it's filled with so many battles you don't have time to be fighting all the stuff you gotta fight pressure and stress and all of these kind of things and fighting you at the same time God's like let me give you a season so that you can win with you because once you win with you I'm not worried about you winning with that so Israel I'm almost done they in the wilderness season for just for just a while and then after a while God says alright it's time to move on so this is what Moses does there are 12 tribes that comprised that makeup Israel as a whole Moses says all right I want one leader from every tribe to go to that Canaan land and spied out every leader needs to pay attention to me here if you're a business leader entrepreneur you can be a business leader not be a business owner right but some people are business owners your business leader and some people lead in a business your business leader educational leader not a profit leader leader in any sector government own leader every leader listen Moses made a colossal leadership mistake he did not properly assess what required his own eyes so he delegated 12 people to go and spy out a land and he depended on their report to make a decision when this decision was so consequential it required the leader to put their own eyes on it because some stuff nobody's gonna see like you did you hear what I just said one of the things I teach when I teach preaches is I teach that God gives preachers eagle eyes and the eyes of an eagle way more than the Eagles brain the Eagle the Eagle can see a rabbit hidden in a bush from a mile away because the Eagle may not have a bigger brain but it's got bigger eyes see that's the importance of knowing your difference when you got eagle eyes you can stand up in any room and say I might not have the brains of everybody but I got eyes you don't have when I pick up that Bible I can see stuff you don't see God showed me stuff you look over and they may have better degrees than you more money than you but they don't have your eyes see when you know what you do God's giving you a set of eyes and you can see things that other people can't see your brain may be bigger but my eyes are bigger I got eagle eyes y'all trying to make me preach this last [Music] is there anybody here that can say I see something that's right that's why I'm still alive cuz I see more than I receipt if I was just depending on my natural eyes I wanna gave up a long time ago but I'm still here because God has given me eagle eyes and a weeping may endure for a night but joy all right [Applause] don't you ever forget I grew up Baptist and every now and then it come out of me I said Oh weeping may endure for a night yeah all right all right so he didn't put his eyes on it so they came back and they said o Moses everything you said about the land is true but it's Giants over there and we were like grasshoppers in our own eyes and their eyes also here's the problem okay 11:30 don't miss this here's the problem they didn't see themselves as grasshoppers today saw other people as Giants so they didn't see themselves right because they would compare themselves to somebody else you will never be able to find out who you are being obsessed with who somebody else is that's why some of you need to get off the ground so much that's why some of you need to get off Instagram so much that's why some of us need to get oh my did he just say that yes that's what some of us need to get out of Facebook so much because that's becoming your giant and you feel good about you until you look at what other people are doing and then you walk away feeling small you feeling small and you're doing big things you bless and you feel curse when you start scrolling you're not hearing what I'm saying you sitting up you're miserable and you live in a blessed life you're like oh you take a little vacation and then you like yes I've been in Jamaica I'm relaxing for a week and then you start scrolling you like all day and Dubai for two weeks oh I saw my vacation is terrible you will never figure out who you are searching for and what's happening in somebody else's life I wish you just pause for a minute and just think about how blessed you are with your blessed self God has not just blessed some of us we see spoor some of us you need to be honest and say God didn't just meet my knees he gave me some stuff I want he been better than me than I've been to myself I'll desert half the stuff I got if you asking me why I got it I don't know God's just been good to me you bless you're smart you're fortunate they missed it cuz you'll never find who you are compare yourself to somebody else you got great kids yo yo your complaint if your worst complaint is they will keep the room clean think about that think about that they honor you they respect you they obey you they hunger they business they kids they don't do what you did let me go to this side wait some people like wait Jesus I rebuke that no my point I'm not saying go do it what you did exactly but you made mistakes but sometimes we get to scroll there you see some oh they speak a kid speak Greek now you're getting rosetta stone and you okay you're about to speak Greek no are you speaking like they like mama it's a dead language I don't care you go speak it any way you feel this small cuz you're looking at everything but the mirror you got to break out of that I feel like I got that I feel like I got the greatest Church where I want to know church I belong I got the greatest jewel I learned from other churches but I look at mine I could call I could get on Instagram Chris I get on Instagram on Facebook and I can call a revival tonight I could say we don't have a revival tonight on Instagram no guest speaker no guests honest I could say we don't have a revival tonight and change church will be in the building learn from other people but look at your life you blessed I really want Bourbon business owners to get this y'all got to get this one you're dealing with economic inequity it's a lot of there's some social realities of just realities that you have to deal with well your business you like come on you know I'm not doing what I want to be doing you do know seven out of ten of them closed their doors at the five years she was like the top 20% if your doors still open at the five years I just wanna let you know you blessed I feel like a grasshopper because you're not and I know in church I'm done in church all the emphasis is on pride like don't think highly of yourself which is true pride comes before a fall God can't tell anybody anything that thinks they know everything a closed mind will never walk through open doors I get that but there's a danger by going to the other extreme we think too low of yourself and the issue is it high low it's right and wrong God wants you to think right about you you're not a grasshopper do you hear me and so in this season it's time to move on from small thinking because these people didn't hear it is it's my point these people didn't accomplish something because they were too scared to try they didn't fight a fight that was already fixed they would have wanted they just tried they didn't even try so my prayer for us today is that God would break us free from this prison of small thinking it's time to move on from that in Jesus name can I pray for you I got points but you don't need them you got the point don't you I'll give them to you next week father I pray right now that you would help us experience a prison break from the prison of small thinking in accurately perceiving ourselves pray that you renew our minds that our identity would be grounded completely and solely in you and I pray that the world would no longer be robbed of what you put in us because we're too timid and afraid too apprehensive to fight a fixed fight this is my prayer for our lives in Jesus
