ourselves accordingly as i mentioned earlier beloved this is our annual men's day celebration and we are so grateful for all of the men of our congregation that gathered on yesterday and dick and nolan bivens did a wonderful job talking about discipline as they were wrestling with their theme the olympic year strengthening our spiritual muscles and they've been following that trek that thematic trek for the last few months as different of our ministerial staff have helped them to grapple with the concept and we are so delighted today to have as our guest preacher for this occasion dr jesse t williams jr i've been trying to get him here for a few years and have been unsuccessful but i am so glad that technology has afforded us the opportunity to hear the rich and profound preaching of dr williams he has distinguished himself as an author he is an accomplished pastor first in saint louis missouri and now at the convent avenue baptist church of harlem new york he is also a community activist and visionary and he also serves as the first vice president of our foreign missions partner lot kerry so i am delighted to introduce to some and to present the others to others dr jesse t williams jr i know we're not in the sanctuary but let's give him a warm mount olive welcome as he comes to share with us the word of god on this auspicious occasion of men's day so now let us hear after we have music to massage the heart so that we can receive the word of god let us hear the reverend jesse t williams jr the distinguished and illustrious pastor of the convent avenue baptist church of harlem new york well let the church say amen amen certainly as we continue in worship prepare our hearts for the word i'm always delighted to bring gifted talented persons to you for our worship experience and on this men's day i thought to do just the same all the way again from baltimore maryland he's been here at mount olive before one of our christmas uh celebrations in the past um so give the lord a praise amen for brother james brooks who's coming to share with us in this time [Music] praise is what i do [Music] i is him and all times [Music] praise is who i am [Music] all times [Music] through the good and the bad i'll praise you lord whether happy or sad i'll praise you in all that i go through because praise i do cause i owe it all to you man [Music] [Applause] [Music] phrases [Music] oh my is [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] people remember the word of god says that praise is a command it's not an option when the word says let everything that have breath praise you the lord so let's give them praise and let's declare and decree who we are hallelujah the word simply says praise is what i do hallelujah praises your weapon so let's declare it and decree it come on [Music] that's what i do is [Music] [Music] things don't always look good they don't always feel good [Music] thank you jesus is [Music] is what i [Music] wanna do [Music] [Music] good morning brothers and sisters in christ i extend special greetings to the mount olive baptist church of arlington virginia where my dear friend and brother the river dr james victor is the pastor i am excited and honored to be with you on this special annual day your men's day where the theme is the olympic year strengthening our spiritual muscles taken from first timothy chapter four i am excited about being able to preach the gospel today and to share the word that god has given to me my question today is once you get those spiritual muscles then what and so my brothers and sisters the word comes to us today from one of the men of the old testament that exercised his spiritual muscles his name was david again pastor victor thank you for this invitation and may god bless the word so let's get into the word of god now brothers and sisters the word of god comes to us today from the old testament the book of first samuel chapter 17. i want to look at verses 21 through 23 and also verse 32. that's first samuel chapter 17 21 through 23 and verse 32 and i'm reading in the new king james version today and it reads as follows for israel and the philistines had drawn up in battle array army against army and david left his supplies in the hand of the supply keeper and ran to the army and came and greeted his brothers then as he talked with them there was the champion the philistine of gath goliath by name coming up from the armies of the philistines and he spoke according to the same words so david heard them and then verse 32 says then david said to saul let no man's heart fail because of him your servant will go and fight with this philistine amen this is the word of god and it's for the people of god the grass may wither the flower may fade heaven and earth may even pass away but the word of god will stand forever and ever and ever amen i am not afraid in one of his many powerful profound and masterful moments of verbal expression brother nelson mandela the former prisoner who later became president of south africa after toppling an evil racist apartheid regime once articulated these words that have been permanently etched in my soul and psyche mandela said i learned that courage was not the absence of fear but the triumph over it the brave man is not he who does not feel afraid but he who conquers that fear in another place aristotle once said he who has overcome his fears will truly be free and brothers and sisters these sentiments about fear and overcoming it in life are certainly relevant for us on this christian journey you see i'm convinced that one of the main obstacles and detriments that blocks blessings and keeps us from achieving the greatness that god has deposited in us is fear fear will stifle you and stagnate you fear will paralyze you and perplex you fear will terrorize you and terminate you fear will eliminate you and eradicate you yes fear can be a powerful force if you let it i shudder to think today brothers and sisters about all of the damage that has been done within and to the body of christ because people who claim to love jesus and follow his commandments are more motivated by fear than they are by their faith in god how many missed blessings how much unrealized potential how much freedom and liberation that was never experienced how many dreams that never materialized how many visions that never came to pass how much time wasted in frivolous pursuits that never pushed beyond the envelope how much wasted effort spent wandering in pools of mediocrity how many needless deaths during a pandemic how many churches who dance on a stage of spiritual impotence how many people in the community who go hungry or homeless or unchurched needlessly all because of fear fear of the unknown unknown fear of someone who's different than us fear of failure and certainly fear of our own inadequacies and weaknesses and we cannot forget fear of someone or something that we perceive to be bigger and stronger and more powerful than us but my brothers and sisters this paralyzing fear cannot and should not be what dominates the lives of god's people or the landscape of god's church fear can't be our motivating factor because we walk by faith and not by sight and the bible tells me that god has not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind and again the word encourages us in the new testament that if god be for us who can be against us for greater is he that is in us than he that is in the world so you see brothers and sisters it is never god's intent for us to be governed by our fear because when fear is the driving factor in your life and in your relationship with god we are denying the fact that god is awesome and omniscient and sovereign over every source that strikes fear in you so whatever fear you may have to face god is greater and bigger than whatever it is you don't have to be afraid because of the god that you have faith in and consequently if you have faith in god then fear will not have the final word in your life say amen somebody now i am keenly aware at this point in my argument that there are those who would critically critique me and what i am presenting today for there are those who would play semantics and engage in verbose gymnastics and say that they're not afraid but rather they're just simply conservative cautious and careful and that these sentiments are totally different than being afraid but i'm pressing the point today brothers and sisters that while they may have slightly different nuances of meaning they all eventually add up to another word that also begins with a c and you know what that word is wait for it wait for it wait for it comfortable yes let's be honest and cut to it this morning church we fear being uncomfortable we fear having to do anything that is uncomfortable we fear having to be pushed and prodded outside of our comfort zones we would rather be comfortable and have smooth sailing as opposed to having to take on a challenge that is outside of our cust our what we are accustomed to and our comfort zone but that is precisely what god calls us to do yes god calls us and assigns us to places and circumstances where we cannot be conservative but we must be radical god calls us to not be cautious but rather be courageous and bold god calls us to not be careful but rather to be totally sold out to god and to trust in god with all of our heart mind and soul i believe brothers and sisters i'm convinced that one of the main questions that every believer and every church is going to have to answer as we come out of this pandemic into a post-pandemic world is can you properly and spiritually deal with your fears well i stand boldly today to proclaim i'm not afraid and i'm asking you to walk with me on this journey church where we not only say we are not afraid but we live like we are not afraid we worship like we are not afraid and we beat the church like we are not afraid you know someone whom god loved that was not conservative not careful and not cautious david that's who david david lets us know declaratively through his actions that he is not afraid in this classic story of david and goliath you have you have some familiarity with this story i'm sure but israel and the philistines are at war you know this each army is on a mountain and there is a valley between the two the philistines have a champion named goliath who is big and tall and huge in stature goliath is an experienced warrior and champion who can undoubtedly hold his own and has killed many of his enemies in battle so for 40 days 4-0-40 days goliath goes down into the valley between the two armies and challenges anyone from israel's side to come down and fight him one-on-one the winner will then claim victory for his side and the loser will surrender on behalf of his side for 40 days goliath sells wolf tickets the way we would say it nowadays he sells wolf tickets in the valley and of course everyone in israel's camp including king saul is terrified of this huge giant enemy now about this time jesse sends his son david to the front line to take some supplies to his three older brothers and the army incidentally let me place a parenthetical pen right there and say you know you never know how god is going to send the help that you need say amen somebody it's not going to always be in some grand grandiose procession your help may come from someone delivering lunch or some other menial task that you may not think much of and that's what david does in the passage today david gets there and delivers his package and sees what's going on and when he hears goliath uh he sees the fear in the faces of saul and the whole army and there's something within david that says even though he sees fear in everybody else's face there's something within him that has him say i'm not afraid i'm gonna go and fight this philistine now i know what some of you are thinking you're looking at it from our perspective and we might think to tell david boy you better go sit down somewhere our rationale would be that if everyone else is afraid then you should be afraid too david i can hear us now david you're gonna fool around and get yourself killed our human reasoning would argue with his faith and tell david that he needs to be cautious careful and conservative and simply act like everybody else and act like he's got some sense but this is not a time to be cautious careful and conservative much like the place where our feet are planted now in our contemporary history this is a time for god to work through someone who has faith to perform a transformational moment in israel's life and can i say to you today that truly transformational moments in life rarely happen when you are trying hard to be cautious careful and conservative real life-changing things don't happen when you are fighting to stay cradled in the crucible of your own comfort zone miracles happen when god takes ordinary people who have extraordinary faith and chooses them and uses them to do amazing things david said y'all might be afraid of him but i'm not afraid of him i will go and fight goliath because i am not afraid and that's the call that's being issued to us today brothers and sisters we're called to have that david-like faith that faith that trusts god no matter how the situation may look somewhere in his heart and soul david has enough godly boldness to stand in the midst of a group of soldiers who are all afraid and say i'm not afraid i'll take on the assignment i will go and that's what god is looking for in his people he's looking for someone bold enough that will not be turned away by their fear but rather they will be projected forward toward the battle by their faith as we are coming out of the pandemic god is looking for somebody bold enough to say yes i'll go yes i'm not afraid so how does david navigate his way through this what can we learn from david so that we can go forward in life and when faced with the next goliath that lines up in your pathway how can we say i'm not afraid well i would suggest to you today that david had to overcome three areas of possible intimidation with the help of god in order to be able to say this and to carry it out the first thing i want you to know is that david was not intimidated by a tough task a tough task somebody typed that in the comments for me a tough task david's initial task when he arrived at the battleground was to deliver supplies but when he got there he recognized a higher purpose and a more difficult task that god had placed before him you see sometimes it is the menial smaller tasks that put us in the position to be able to recognize our greater purpose so don't ever think a task is beneath you or that you're too good or too important to do what seems like a small task because it may be the gateway that leads you to your higher purpose david had enough spiritual discernment to know that he should leave the supplies with the keeper of the supplies and immediately head to a tougher task you see david understood that there's a difference between supplying the army and fighting in the army oh yeah i just said something there i said there's a difference between supplying the army and fighting in the army david understood that you have to move beyond the secondary menial task so that you can get to the heart of what your mission really is there comes a time my brothers and sisters when we have to transition from the busy work of the church to the true heart of purpose and mission for the church you see there comes a time when you must move beyond work that you're comfortable and content doing in the church and get to a tougher task that is more directly involved with mission ministry and purpose one of the things we have to do in the post-pandemic church is when god blesses us to come back is to distinguish between church work and real mission and ministry there are many folk in the pre-pandemic church who are comfortable and content doing their work in the background it was comfortable it was predictable but would shy away from going to fight in the battle if we are to learn anything from david today we must learn that god is calling us to move beyond the comfortable work of delivering supplies or background work and move to the forefront and be ready to trust god enough to take on goliath there are some folk that i know who can't wait to get back in church because they miss the comfort the consistency of delivering supplies and never having to think about goliath but as we are being delivered from this pandemic by god i want you to know that we are coming back but we are not going back i just said something there rewind the tape i believe i need to say that again we are coming back but we are not going back and the tough task the goliath that is in front of you is a part of your new assignment that moves you beyond what was so comfortable and consistent don't allow your life and purpose to be stalled because you've become content with the easy tasks and are afraid of tough tasks well secondly i believe that david had to overcome the intimidation of a temporary title a temporary title someone typed that in the comments for me a temporary title and here's where i'm going with this david could say he was not afraid because he was not intimidated by goliath's title throughout first samuel chapter 17 goliath is referred to as the philistine champion he undoubtedly deserved the title champion and i am sure he must have earned it in many battles but by the time you reach verse 26 of the same chapter david asks the question and i just love david don't you david asked the question who is this uncircumcised philistine who defies the armies of the living god you know what when titles uh cause us to get the big head every now and then god will send somebody that will call us something other than our title so in david's mind goliath may have entered the situation a champion but he is going to leave an uncircumcised philistine and this is important hallelujah because some people will rely on their titles to inflict mental and emotional intimidation upon you do you know there are people who really believe that because they may carry a certain title before or after their name that it means that people should cower to them bow in submission to them tolerate irreverent behavior from them excuse insensitive language from them some people really believe that their title makes them better and more important than other people and puts them in a class superior to other people lord have mercy but from david and goliath we see clearly that titles are only temporary they can be yours today and they can be gone today titles are significant because other people choose to respect you in that title not because we think we are all that preached pastor i'm doing my best today but perhaps the most profound lesson we learn about titles is that if you use your title to fight or discourage or intimidate god's people god can raise up somebody to not only change your title but take your title your title can be taken away titles are temporary at best and whatever title you've been best blessed to have make sure that you don't let the title make you do i have a witness see it as a blessing from god and wear it like a very loose garment david was able to say i'm not afraid because he was not moved by goliath's title and he knew the titles were in god's hands ultimately well thirdly and finally i want you to know that david had to overcome intimidation in the area of terroristic talk terroristic talk you all got everybody got points today you got the points about a temporary title a tough task and now finally i'm leaving you with terroristic talk goliath sold wolf tickets for 40 days in front of all the soldiers of israel and it worked because of what he was saying and that he looked like he could back it up they were all afraid of him you know some people are just like goliath they will try to instill fear in you through the way they talk they use words hurtful words inflammatory words uh hateful words hurtful words to intimidate people and make them so fearful that they run away from challenging them talk can do a lot of damage we saw it over and over again during the previous four years from the office at 1600 pennsylvania avenue we saw it when words were used to start an insurrection on january 6 in the nation's capital when goliath uses terroristic talk uh it can scare some people to the point where they will either join goliath or run from goliath and that's what all bullies hope for they hope that you will be so scared by their words and their talk that you will not think about fighting back but thank god that david does not fall for the talk for the text says in verse 23 that he heard the words coming from goliath and david's not afraid of the talk and neither should you be afraid child of god whatever they say and however they say it don't be afraid but i do learn to listen to your enemy yes like david listen to what your enemy says not to be fearful of it but so that you can use those words as fuel to help you defeat the enemy later when people talk in a terroristic way i'm learning how to just let them talk and then go on and do what god wants me to do do i have any witness you know we have a good example of that in the country today and i believe it's vice president kamala harris people are talking about her in such a venomous unfair way and most of it is because she is the first black female to occupy the office of vice president of the united states of america they're throwing everything at her trying to discredit her disrespect her and question her competence and motives but one thing i like about kamala is that she is staying the course and working with president biden to do the best she can and i like that she is not afraid of the talk because talk is cheap and talk comes and goes do i have a witness but the word of god stands forever and i suppose that's how david did it and how i choose to not be afraid i don't listen and worry about the talk so much anymore i because i'd rather listen to how god talks do i have any witnesses i'm not afraid because god said no weapon formed against you shall prosper i'm not afraid because god said they that wait upon the lord shall renew their strength they shall mount up on wings like an eagle they'll run and not get weary they'll walk and not think i'm not afraid today because the word of god says that with god nothing shall be impossible and i'm not afraid today because god has not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind and i'm not afraid today because jesus said lo i will be with you always even until the end of the age is there anybody here uh who is watching along with me today that can testify i'm not afraid because the lord has brought me from a mighty long way the lord has taken care of me the lord has brought me through many dangerous toils and snares is there anybody that will testify put it in the chat for folk to see that you're not afraid because god has been too good he's brought you too far he's done too much he's too awesome and he's too powerful i want somebody to know today you don't have to be afraid because the god we serve is able to do anything but fail trust in the lord and never doubt and he will surely bring you out the declaration from david i am not afraid [Music] [Music] the lord be praised we thank god for both the gift of the message and the messenger as we extend now the invitation to christian discipleship there may be someone here today listening to us watching us observing us joining us that has overcome your fear with faith it's not about as the preacher said the absence of fear but overcoming the paralysis that can be onset with fear and that comes only through the help of god so if there's one today the number beneath the the the image is the number that you should call to get connected to a power source greater than oneself it is not a power source that is brought on by the dynamism of of pyrotechnics or military apparatus or even economic strength and position but it is one that is augmented and inaugurated by the power of the holy spirit so if there is one today that would like to unite with the mount olive baptist church to affiliate with the mount olive baptist church then we welcome you and invite you to sign in and call that number and someone is waiting to receive your testimony of faith i am not afraid for and i am not ashamed of the gospel of jesus christ as we extend the invitation this day we offer you the opportunity to send in your prayer requests as there may be those who have special interests special needs that demand prayer and as you are doing so and as you are responding to this powerful word from dr jesse t williams jr we also want to welcome a new member to the mount olive church put it in the chat and welcome her sister donna reed gant as she comes to rejoin the mount olive baptist church so won't you welcome her as we extend the invitation for others to come and join us in the work that god has assigned our hands the invitation now is before us what will you do with your fears what will you do with this opportunity to come and join jesus and his blessed community called the church the decision is yours the opportunity in this moment is now yours to follow the lord jesus christ [Music] who has the final say jehovah has the final say tell me who has the final thing to overtake the final say no matter what the doctors say jehovah has the final save no matter what yeah your bills may say jehovah the fight i have the lord is my life i have no reason to fear i have no reason to dear the lord is my life the lord is my life [Applause] tell me who had the final say which must go to the cemetery this week and we have a prayer request for [Music] alicia armstrong who is in the hospital in georgia with covet we know that the god that resides here in arlington is also the god who visits people in hospital rooms in georgia we also have a request for mr for g maben jr [Music] there may be others as these come in we will again as is our custom in this period of covet tender all of these requests to our intercessory prayer ministry the gap ministry let us pray beloved pray for one another in these perilous times that god's protective and providential hand will secure us and keep us all safe as we go about the business of living and the business of the kingdom let us pray god eternal we thank you for the preacher today we thank you for the powerful word and for the admonition to not be afraid for dear god we realize at times our fears get the best of us but if we could but remember that if you are for us you are more than the whole world against us and there's no need to really be afraid so help us oh god to overcome our fears of living of succeeding of doing the work that you have assigned our hands did god the obstacles and the challenges may seem great and insurmountable but we know that there is something within us that is greater than any challenge that we may face for you are greater within us than he and any entity that is in the world and now lord god we pray for these requests that have been laid before us and we lay them gently at your feet knowing that you have overcoming power and conquering power and delivering power and healing power and reconciling and restoring power so god now unleash the power of the divine and your kingdom upon these needs and others across this globe dear god we are still dealing with a pandemic and we need your presence and your power so forsake not your people and help us all to do our part that we might come to a greater place of community and recognize that we are individuals in community bless and forsake not and god we pray that as our men in particular continue to do the work that they have been assigned that you would undergird the work of their hands and not allow them to fail for they are so desperately needed in a day such as ours now oh god forgive us of all of our sins our transgressions our iniquities and our failures and allow us to know the healing power of your mercy your grace and your forgiveness and we pray this in the blessed name of christ jesus our lord it's in his name and for his sake that we pray as a blessing upon the people of god and we all
