concord missionary church where the pastors dr kenneth phelps and this is another day that god has allowed us to see another day to get it right amen another day to worship him and give him glory the lord is our strength he's the strength of our lives and in everything that we go through he is there with us amen there's a strip like no other like no other we can call on our family and friends but nothing like calling on the name of jesus he is our strength hallelujah so join in with us as we worship god this morning everybody can lift up the name of jesus with the mass god we can still give presence of the lord no matter what you're going through in life now all of us if we had this microphone we could talk about what we're going through and what we've been through my sister be encouraged my brother dr phelps to be encouraged concord be encouraged those that are watching be encouraged i'm telling you what i know now what i'm talking with somebody told me but i know i'm surrounded i know because i've seen them work i'm surrounded i'm surrounded listen it may look like i'm [Music] survived it may look like i'm surrounded but i'm so rough by you it may look like i'm so right but i'm surrounded it by look like i'm surrounded i'm surrounded by you this is how i fight my face when the enemy comes in like a flood this is how i fight my battles i learn to praise them shall rejoice and be glad in it hallelujah we are thankful to god that no weapon formed against us shall prosper and everything that rises up against us hallelujah we want to take a moment to welcome you to our worship service those that are viewing through the internet we want to welcome you to the worship services of the concord missionary baptist church located in 6319 south kimbard in the city of chicago illinois again we thank god for our worship team in our worship ministry then they do a wonderful job come on let's give god some praise today hallelujah we always begin our worship services with the lord's prayer followed by the cnbc application pledge and then if you were to remain standing um for the reading of the scripture again let us pray as the lord taught his disciples to pray our father which art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever amen again our bible application pledge says this we believe that faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of god we can't just listen to or read god's word we must do what it says otherwise we're only fooling ourselves what is in the application of god's word that our lives will be changed so lord grant us the courage and the discipline to do what your word says we declare and decree we would never be the same in jesus name amen amen if you have your bibles with you whether it's electronic or in paperback we ask or leather bound whatever you have we want to turn have you to turn with us to the book of the gospel according to saint matthew gospel according to saint matthew gospel according to saint matthew the 8th chapter and we will be reading in your hearing verses 23-27 again matthew 8 23-37 if you're not so so if you were so inclined to do so you can also share the word if you would be so nice and kind to your neighbor again so that we're all uh studying and walking together amen the bible says now when he and jesus got into the boat his disciples followed him and he suddenly a great tempest arose a storm on the sea so that the boat was covered with waves but he jesus was asleep then his disciples came to him and woke him saying lord save us we are perishing but he said unto them why why why are you so fearful o ye of little faith then he arose rebuked twins and the sea and there was a great calm and so the men marveled saying who can this be i think the king james version says what matter of man is this that even the winds and the sea the waves obey him hallelujah for a few moments i want to preach from this thought how to handle the storms of life you may be seated in the presence of the lord how to handle the storms of life um some of my favorite songs oh there used to be this little guy here named brother jonathan mitchell i believe he became a deacon one day he used to sing this song you know y'all may not remember it but it says though the storms keep on raging in my life and he would get to that that that that chorus but if the storms don't cease and if the winds keep on blowing in my life he would hit that mine my soul has been anchored in the lord and then there was another little lady that used to uh be here her name was sister coley jackson y'all may remember her but she used to to sing a song win peace like a river attendeth my way when sorrows like sea billows roll whatever my lot thou has taught me to say it is well with my soul though satan you know sometimes see we don't usually brother john we used to sing all five or six stanzas i literally this morning you know i didn't want to make anybody feel bad but i was gonna have us to come out and do it as well and i was gonna give a hundred dollars to the one who could recite all six verses that's a challenge that's a challenge but but there was a time when we would sing all six verses you see you know that was the that was the format you know um but i won't make it make us do that but anyway the second verse says this though satan should buffet me though trials should come let this blast assure control that christ has regarded my helpless estate and he has shed his own blood for my soul it is well it is well with my soul so there's a lot of songs about storms and um and and in the physical realm of brother anthony steele there has literally been 13 storms named storms in 2021. this last season has been horrific um and and and and five of these storms have actually uh reached the status of of uh of of what we call um um status uh major hurricanes you know categories three category four category fives and and the last one was i believe uh tropical storm mindy was the most recent to hit the united states um and and it was it was bolstering up to 45 miles per hour yes hurricane ida hit i mean i almost literally destroyed uh new orleans there's still you know power outages and and and lives being destroyed and then ida went from from new orleans all the way to new jersey and to new york city are you listening today and and of these five major um you know hurricanes or those that have gone category three or better there has been 152 deaths and almost 53 listen to this 53 billion dollars in damages my brothers and sisters we are living in a season of storms you see my brothers and sisters the physical and natural storms the physical and natural uh environment that the physical and natural environment is really reflective of what's going on in the spiritual realm and sometimes god has to allow us to see it in the natural so that we can understand what's going on in the spiritual sometimes god has to allow us to see it in the visible so we can understand the invisible so our text demonstrates how you and i are to respond to and to act in the storms of life according to the texts jesus got on the ship and the bible says and his disciples went with him and then he crawls into a hole i'm talking about in a cabin that's underneath you see the surface and he falls asleep and there arose what's called a great tempest in other words it was equivalent to what we call hurricanes oh no this wasn't an april shower this wasn't a light you know sprinkling you know just a refreshing no no no this was a this was accompanied by horrid winds and and and and waters that was destructive are you listening to me and the bible says that the waves beat and buffeted the ship but jesus slept i said jesus slept you see some of us can't you know okay it don't matter the the slightest sound for some of us you see keeps us awake but jesus was in them he was a storm in the midst of a storm you know some of us can't sleep when we're stressed on the job but jesus was asleep in the storm some of us can't can't sleep when we are anticipating about tomorrow but jesus he's slept some of us can't sleep when we know we're about to play a very important game but jesus he was on this he slept he slept he slept and the story this story is a metaphor for life and jesus behavior he demonstrates for us in a really profound way it really jesus behavior and his response it shows and articulates for us how we too as his disciples are to respond to life's storms consider the storm the storm is a metaphor for the troubles of life you know sometimes you see like a certain storm trouble can disappear are you listening you know sometimes some stuff happens in our lives there is no warning sometimes you know stuff happens right i mean suddenly you know unexpectedly out of nowhere just when you think you had everything under control chaos confusion and calamity will come can i get a witness and just when you feel you can take a breather you know just when you feel like the storm is over just like you feel the sun is going to shine if you just hold out right that's when you feel that's when that's when the storms of life come our way anybody ever encountered a storm and my brothers and sisters you see we we have the luxury of of of of weather men and weather women and we got the luxury of of meteorologists we got the luxury of those storm chasers individuals that that that that that follow the storm they have all kind of instruments they got satellites that would would would allow us to see uh uh you know the storms uh literally uh if not hours literally days away and they can they can they they they they use computer technology that can simulate what the path of the storm and how vicious it is and and and but let me tell you the worst kind of storm cannot be seen with with a satellite the worst kind of storms cannot be be anticipated by computer calculations sometimes storms just happen in our lives you see when you when you and everybody around you is broke that's a storm can i get a witness here i said when you and everybody around you bro you see as long as i know my brother got some money you know i'm good but when when when when my source is broke too we're in a bad situation can i get a witness here can i get a witness here y'all know what i'm talking about when you lose your job you in a storm when you can't find the job you you in the storm and when you got a job but but but your boss is driving you crazy you in a storm when you get locked up you you you in a storm when when you have health challenges that's a storm and we have to know how to to to respond to whatever crisis that you find yourself in hallelujah see far too many of us we lose our you see we told y'all we we some of us got anger problems i said that on last week you know you see we we feel like we feel like uh we feel like like like like we want to fight the storm but but your arms is too short to box with a stone a real storm you see so we we we we lose our our cool uh we lose our conviction and and if we ain't careful a storm or even make you lose your character are you listening yeah you see when you're stuck in or challenged or confronted by life storms it'll make you lose your cool your conviction and your character listen and and if we're not too crazy are you listening if we're not too crazy we'll even do some foolish things in a storm you see we were taught you see all these things go out the the door but from a little kid we were taught how to respond in a storm all right some of this stuff uh you know wasn't scientific but this is what mama grandmama big mama you know my dear whatever you want to call it what they talk you know first and foremost you know when a storm came you didn't talk on the phone lights out turn everything off can i get a witness here y'all ain't saying that y'all forgot about those days right listen even in school they taught us how to deal with the tornado or things you know you get out on the floor you go into the basement you know they taught us we literally had drills for how to handle the storms but then we get to church and nobody teaches us how to handle a storm oh are you listening just like we needed to be prepared physically we need to be prepared spiritually for how to encounter how to handle the encounters of storms in our lives and so we must know how how to react now again from too many of us we lose our crew you know what the reality is we lose our faith now notice notice all the men on the ship jesus is asleep but they up worrying they scared for their life you got to understand brother steele these are trained fishermen man you know i don't know if y'all saw the the game the other night but i was really really impressed and i don't care if you are tom brady fan or not it don't matter but check this out but what impressed me was how cool he was you know cause be honest with you i thought it was over i literally thought the game was over but he he maintained his composure and did not you know he managed i kid you not go back and look at that last minute and a half now you see fumble ball all kinds of stuff going on i was about to turn it off in fact i did turn it off but the person i was sitting next to had it on and i'm sitting there watching them and he did this in less than less than a minute and he they kicked the you know field goal and and they were down they were down by three you see or or something like that two or something you know and by two in less than a minute and a half i thought the game was over and and what i've learned just from that that very and then you know but he didn't sweat he didn't quit he didn't throw in the towel you see he he didn't start tripping you know i mean in fact none of the people on on the thing they wasn't holding their head down walking up because i would have been going over the other shaking the things shaking now it would have been over for me you know what i'm saying but but but but but see that's the difference between an amateur and a pro right you got to get to a place in your life where where where where where you don't say it's over until it is over you you you got to give god a chance to win the game for you are you listening some of us quit prematurely that's why we lose you see all of our progress some of us give up too soon that's why you you you you're not as victorious as you need to be because you quit before the game is over so sometimes what i'm saying is ian you beat yourself the opponents 90 of the time they don't beat you you beat yourself are you listening today jesus he sleep hey he don't know he in the storm he know he's in the storm but he also knows that the storm can't hurt me he also knows that the storm see see and when you know that when you have that confidence you see when you when you know that you're gonna win the game then you act accordingly see when you know you're going to win the game you don't act like a loser are y'all listening to me today and so and so so jesus jesus the disciples are tripping right you know they experienced fishermen you know and they losing their mind because this is like almost like a storm they had never seen before you know they they tripping because you know you know you know when you're out at sea you know when you when you you know you fish you do these kinds of things you know you know you you know you know and you know what to do you know what i'm saying if you're in a a situation right but but but but but their master and their teacher was asleep you see and so jesus behavior made them made them in some texts made them literally question do you care about me you see my brothers and sisters when we go through trials and tribulations when we go through sicknesses when we go through things we don't really experience it will make even the most seasoned of us question do you really care about me you know do you really care about me and maybe some of you all have been there if we're just honest with ourselves maybe maybe some of you have been there you know when you when you have these these chronic conditions and when you have these chronic situations and you you have these these storms that i'm talking about i'm talking about storms these hurricanes that that literally feels like it's about to to destroy everything that you work for you've prayed for you built and they said master careth not that we we perish you see have you ever asked the question jesus cares not that we we perish do you really care about what's going on in my life you see and sometimes when jesus is silent in your situation it will cause you to question and it may even seem like you sleep but can i tell you that every closed eye ain't sleep y'all ever heard that before i said every clothes i ain't sleep can i get a witness my just because my eyes are closed don't mean i don't hear your past just because my eye don't mean i don't hear you just because i'm nodding don't mean i'm not connecting but i want you to know today beyond the shadow of doubt that jesus knows and he cares if you believe that come on let's give god some praise so then what did jesus do what did jesus do jesus jesus woke up he got up he spoke up he woke up he got up and then he spoke up i said that one more time for the holy ghost i said he he he woke up in other words in other words in other words in other words he wanted them to know that he was a conscious that he was aware of what was going on then he got up literally means he stood up literally means he changed postures he changed persistence and he changed perspectives and then he spoke up oh yes i'll tell you this listen again turn somebody says time for you to wake up you see my brothers and sisters it's time for you to become spiritually aware spiritually conscious of things see some of you are too carnal you need to become more spiritual you you deal too much in the fleshly realm when you should be dealing in the spiritual realm and and if you can't really get to that at least try to get some balance see some of us are two fleshly and then some of us are too spiritual that we ain't no earthly good come on talk to me somebody you gotta have balance turns everybody says time to wake up you see you gotta start looking at things through spiritual eyes what is god really saying here what is god really trying to get us to see right here and then the next thing he did he stood up in other words you you need to stop being so pensive you need to start taking authority you got to have a change of perspective a change of position a change of posture you see it's really hard to sleep when you're standing up see some of you sit down you lay down when you should be standing uh you see it's hard to run when you're sitting now you can't do it you see you see sitting down is a posture of rest are you listening you see but but if god if you want to progress sometimes you got to stand up you got to take you got to be at attention you got to be ready to move when he say move and then last and finally you got to speak up oh yeah you got to speak up you got to speak up now now the truth of the matter is most of us have no problem you know uh saying what's on our minds but the real question is do you have do you do you say what's what's what's in the word do you do you begin to speak those things into existence as though they were do you begin to speak by faith you know it it upsets me people are always calling it like they see it and i then told you you're looking at it through fleshly eyes are you listening today jesus spoke directly to the storm see what a lot of us do we we be calling everybody else we be talking to everybody else and let me tell you everybody else can't do nothing everybody else is in the same situation you know if you're going to talk to somebody talk to somebody that can help you talk to somebody that can do something about whatever but but but but but it takes spiritual maturity see this is this is what i want y'all to do i want y'all to practice this this week i want y'all to begin to to to to begin to speak to the storms of your life i know that sounds i know that sounds crazy but but but you're talking to everybody else and it ain't happening so why don't you try you got to learn how to speak directly to the demons that are trying to destroy you are you listening today are you listening today and what he did when you combine when you combine that spiritual alertness when you combine that that spiritual posture and you you you you start articulating things in the spirit listen listen whatever is trying to bound bind you will have to submit to your authority oh i know this ain't the kind of shouting kind of thing that y'all want but but you don't need to learn how to shout you need to learn how to talk to storms see see see you gotta you you gotta learn how to speak to the storms those things that are trying to torment you see your storms and make you quit before the game is over are you listening the storms the storms the storms will play head games with you listen i'm almost done but but you cannot control when the storms come but you can control your reaction to the storm and here's what i learned we need to learn how to control our minds we need to learn how to control our legs and we need to learn how to control our mouths in a storm are you listening control control control say control my mind control my legs and control my mouth you see because as a man thinketh so is he you lose the game even before you play it because any time you let doubt come in anytime you let fear come in you're defeating yourself and the enemy that's all he wants to do see the im the enemy the enemy wants to to raise what's called reasonable doubt see if you if if you if you if you can if you can raise reasonable doubt you can win the case are you listening today and listen can i give you a statistic worrying or fretting never produces any positive results worrying worrying and fretting you gonna help me pray you help me preach it okay listen it never worrying never ever ever produces anything positive things that you're fearful of it never produces anything positive are you listening give you another stat 95 of what you worry about does not become a reality oh you think i'm lying just just what was the last thing you worried about did it happen nope nope don't worry about where we gonna get the house or not did it happen nope right see the the you know the things that we worry about very rarely becomes a reality so if that's the case why we worry are y'all listening to me today so so let me just go ahead and just finish this listen jesus he he go ahead first thing he did was he he woke up come on woke up right he got up and then he spoke up right all right so he did that so jesus speaks to the storm and all of a sudden the storms listen let me tell you something the very thing that you're afraid of if you speak to it it has to obey you the things that you the things that you really are worried about this is what he did he just he just spoke to it you know he spoke to it you know he spoke to it you know he spoke to it he didn't go to the psychic he spoke to it he didn't go to the to the palm reader he spoke to he didn't yeah whatever he spoke to it listen he didn't even go to church because most of the storms that you're facing ain't in the church now there's some church storms but that ain't what's bothering you most of the time it's the stuff that's happening in your homes on your jobs in your body and your finances those are the things that messing with you even in your head are you listening today and the onlookers were amazed the onlookers were amazed don't look see see see we need we we need some some some spiritual tom brady's you know that that's gonna play until until it's over not flinch not fletch now let me just give you an insight you see the difference between a pro and an amateur is they practice until they can't get it wrong whereas amateurs try to practice until they get it right if you want to ask him how many times did he run the two-minute drill [Music] or one-minute drill you have no idea how many times so he's been doing this all the time all he do he know the count he know the count he know the thing it's it's ingrained in him he could literally do it in his sleep and all all that needs to happen is the defense just need to cooperate all of this going to bible study what's it for if it don't work in storms all is going to church all this this is how i find my man and then when you come into the battle what kind of lady do you understand what i'm saying if this doesn't work then why are we here if it doesn't work why are we here see this is preparation for for defeating storms yeah you right this is how we fight our battles see see you got you got to learn to apply this this this is walking by faith in action wanda was right i'm done but wanda was right juan was right riley was right that the weapon of praise it transforms the atmosphere and all of us are walking through storms i can see umbrellas all around i'm not looking i know y'all think i'm crazy but but but i i i see it in the spiritual realm you're you're walking with an umbrella trying to prevent yourself from from even getting wet but god sent me here to tell you today wake up stand up and speak up you don't like what you see wake up stand up speak up take authority rewrite the story it don't have to be what you fear let it be what you face all over the building won't you stand though the storms keep on raging in my life and sometimes it's hard to tell the night from day still that hope that lies within [Music] it rehashing so i keep my eyes upon that distant sure i know [Music] he has prepared [Music] don't see the wind keeps on blowing in my life my soul has been [Music] the lord [Laughter] [Music] i realize that sometimes in this life come on sing that joke you're gonna be tall by the waves and the currents that seem so fierce [Music] but in the word of god [Music] i've got an anchor [Applause] [Music] that keeps me mistakes [Music] despite the times and just in case the wind [Music] [Applause] [Music] my [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] in the lord in the lord in the lord oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] i shall not wait [Music] [Music] my [Music] my soul [Music] pray for brother jason mccormick in your prayers in the passing of his mother patricia watchman we have prayer meeting at 6 00 a.m and 6 30 p.m and bible study at 7 pm on wednesdays the double good popcorn sale the men and women's department will sponsor a double good popcorn sale from october the 4th through october the 8th 2021 we will have a training session for pop-up stores after morning service on sunday september the 19th we will celebrate senior day on sunday september 26th join us as we honor our seniors the theme is living by faith hebrews 11 and one the assessment for all adults is 35 the women of concord will meet sunday september 13th at 6 00 i'm sorry we'll meet monday september 13 at 6 30 pm to discuss upcoming events and updates please join via zoom the seniors will have a bake sale today after morning services please support our seniors with their fundraiser this week join us for movie night on saturday september the 18th at 6 00 pm this proceeds go to the family and friends organizer organizers and their fundraising goal the movie starts at six the cost is ten dollars which includes your first free bag of popping corn yay the movie will be shown in the outer sanctuary for safety purposes please spread the word to your family and your friends and please come out and support us we are looking forward to having an awesome night in the lord the seniors will have a night of bingo on saturday september 25th 6 p.m the cost is only a mere 10 join them for a night of virtual bingo and big fun and fellowship with your church and family those are your traveling so i want to pray for that family and then also roy grimes brother roy grimes we want to pray for their healing all right i just want to encourage us because like i said it's really some really strange things happening uh you know again in this atmosphere and um and we are sensitive to it you know um but as long as you know how to survive in the storm you'll be all right all right well um i'm sure um there's probably something that i'm i'm forgetting but let me personally um yeah come on brother mitchell um all right so seniors having a bake sale you can get it on your way out let me also say this that we are starting again for those who have not been in bible study we're starting a new book we're starting reading the bible study on the book of acts so yeah so you're not too late you know you're not too late you get in at the beginning all right so just kind of challenge yourself to just join us through the reading of the book of acts okay uh so i want to encourage you to do so again you can if you get there um you know at 6 30 for prayer you won't miss bible study all right so i encourage you to do so all right hey listen i do love you appreciate you again i
