Mass in Honor of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris - Thursday, September 16, 2021

[Music] tell the story [Music] see the lord's own [Music] see the chosen [Music] know [Music] those who do not know him you breathe [Music] know that jesus [Music] is [Music] good afternoon and kindly be seated for just one moment i am pleased to welcome you to this crypt church of the basilica of the national shrine of the american conception for this special mass in honor of the cathedral of notre dame in paris as you all know on monday of holy week 2019 fire ravaged notre dame and caused significant damage to this venerable cathedral that very day this national shrine began a campaign to help restore the cathedral which was then supported by the united states conference of catholic bishops and dioceses throughout the united states at the conclusion of mass today we'll present the contributions that were received to the rector and the arch priest of the cathedral of notre dame monsignor patrick chauvet who we are privileged to have with us this afternoon during the past two years i've had the pleasure of working with the president of the friends of notre dame de perry michelle pikel who also joins us this afternoon we are delighted to have the archbishop of washington and chairman of the national shrine board of trustees carter wilton gregory as the celebrant for today's mass we also welcome our priests concelebrants and the parishioners of the french-speaking parish in the archdiocese of washington st louis of france in a very special way we greet those who join us through our live stream broadcast the eternal world television network catholic tv and salt and light tv may our lady hear the prayers of her children gathered this day intercede for our needs and those of the cathedral of notre dame in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen peace be with you brothers and sisters in the lord to prepare our hearts to hear the word of god and to share together the bread of life let us ask the father to forgive our sins [Music] lord jesus you are mighty god and prince of peace [Music] christ jesus you are son of god and son of mary christ [Music] lord jesus you are word made flesh and splendor of the father is [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray grant us so merciful god protection in our weakness that we who keep the memorial of the immaculate mother of god may with the help of her intercession rise up from our iniquities through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever so a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah rejoice with jerusalem and be glad of her all of you who love her exult exult with her all you who are mourning over her oh that you may suck fully of the milk of her comfort that you may nurse with delight at her abundant breasts for thus says the lord lo i will spread prosperity over her like a river and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing torrent as nurslings you shall be carried in her arms and fondled in her lap as a mother comforts her child so will i comfort you in jerusalem you shall find comfort when you see this your heart shall rejoice and your bodies flourish like the grass the lord's power shall be known to his servants the word of the lord [Music] you are the highest [Music] you are the highest [Music] blessed are you daughter by the most high god above all women on earth [Music] oh [Music] your deed of hope will never be forgotten [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] unto you [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to john there was a wedding at cana in galilee and the mother of jesus was there jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding when the wine ran short the mother of jesus said to him they have no wine and jesus said to her woman how does your concern affect me my hour has not yet come his mother said to the servants do whatever he tells you now there were six stone water jars there for jewish ceremonial washings each holding 20 to 30 gallons jesus told them fill the jars with water so they filled them to the brim then he told them draw some out now and take it to the head waiter so they took it and when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine without knowing where it came from although they who had drone the water knew the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him everyone serves good water good wine first and then when people have drunk freely an inferior one but you have kept the good wine until now did this as the beginning of his signs at cana in galilee and so revealed his glory and his disciples began to believe in him the gospel of the lord [Music] dearest friends in christ today's gospel takes us back once again to the little village of cana where the mother of god notices that a young bridal couple's wedding feast might be in need of some assistance mary notices as she always does when her children need her intercession she even prods her son to the aid of that young couple perhaps even before he was ready formally to begin his public ministry mary is quite often a facilitator on behalf of her children this great basilica in fact is a tribute to her intercessory prayer and constant assistance [Music] is also a world famous sanctuary that has welcomed countless millions of people for centuries have actually been saints while others were great sinners when the iconic notre dame sanctuary suffered serious fire damage in 2019 the hearts of people throughout the world were shaken our local response in the united states of america was to join millions of people and pledging to help to restore this world treasure people throughout the world all wanted to make sure that this house of welcome and prayer would be available for generations to come so that they could find and embrace the christ in that place of hospitality and welcome for all who in the future might come to that blessed place seeking and welcoming none other than jesus himself in a shrine that existed under the privileged title of his own blessed mother he still longs to welcome saints and those of us who are sinners moreover we believe that jesus still listens to the pleading of his mother on behalf of his sisters and brothers when we are in need the offering that the people from the united states of america present today to our sisters and brothers and friends is an expression of our deep affection and support as they continue the restoration of notre dame de paris cana was the site of mary's intercession on behalf of a young couple may our gift assist the people of paris in restoring a place of prayer and beauty for those who visit that world-famous shrine in the centuries that will follow amen trusting in mary's intercession we now turn to the lord in humility as we present our prayers and our petitions that those who teach the catholic faith may be open to the guidance of the holy spirit let us pray to the lord and hear our prayer that our nation's leaders will be inspired by the gospel message to work for peace and justice and to enact policies which build up the common good let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who are seeking to know god may our words and our lives bring them hope and confidence in him let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for true and lasting peace throughout the world in our own nation and communities and for all those who have suffered the effects of war terrorism and violence let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that many will respond to god's call to serve the church as priests deacons and consecrated religious let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the benefactors and donors of the cathedral of notre dame in paris and all those who have responded with compassion and generosity let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that those who have died and have gone before us in faith may receive life with mary and the saints in heaven let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer hear the prayers of your church we pray oh lord and through the intercession of the blessed virgin mary lead us to the glory of your eternal kingdom through christ our lord [Music] soon oh [Music] me [Music] god [Music] [Music] [Music] r [Music] is [Music] us [Music] [Music] yes [Music] r [Music] r so pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father as we honor the memory of the mother of god the mother of your son we pray o lord that the oblation of the sacrifice may by your grace make of us an eternal offering to you through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation to praise your mighty deeds and the exaltation of all the saints and especially as we celebrate the memory of the mouse of the blessed virgin mary to proclaim your kindness as we echo her thankful hymn of praise for truly even to the earth's ends you have done great things and extended your abundant mercy from age to age when you looked on the lowliness of your handmaid you gave us through her the author of our salvation your son jesus christ our lord through him the host of angels adores your majesty and rejoices in your presence forever may our voices we pray join with theirs in one chorus of exultant praise as we acclaim [Music] heaven and earth [Music] blessed is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope wilton our bishop and his assistant bishops and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen amen the peace of the lord be with you always [Music] is [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who commemorate the mother of your son may glory in the fullness of your grace and experience its continued increase for our salvation through christ our lord please be seated as i mentioned at the beginning of mass today carter gregory and i will present two months senior chavez on behalf of all those who contributed to help restore the cathedral of notre dame to proceeds of our special appeal i am pleased to tell you that thanks to the great generosity of people throughout the united states and beyond we were able to make a gift in the amount of 465 thousand dollars one senior chauvet remnants [Applause] i am particularly touched by this move which will will be of great help for notre dame michelle parish archbishop of paris thanks you very much and he's waiting for you in paris but you have to wait a little because the casserole is not yet completely restored in my song [Music] it seems that the fact that we have been dispossessed of this cathedral in paris is also a sign of hope commerce we begin to hope when there is a nearly nothing but this is the right hope that we have news across it took times to come here because of all the events which happened but it seems that nothing will separate us from our american friends love is stronger than pandemic merci sipu thank you also for this very wonderful celebration i've been touched by the singers and the choir of the basilica and by the psalm i must notre i must say that after this terrible blaze notre dame has changed his dimension and it has become international it's not anymore notre dame de paris but it's not for them of the world semester i'm very grateful and i i think i thank you very much for this mystery of notre dame which is a mystery of communion between the church which is in paris and the church which is here because it's a universal communion [Music] natural more i want to thank all the believers and faithful who are here and especially mr consul general ambassador yeah the spouse of our french ambassador to the u.s [Music] and i would like to thank all the the faithful here and beyond all the faces we see all the generosity of american people geometry i want to say that notre dame
