the holy spirit said leaders of the people and elders if we are being examined today about a good deed done to a namely by what means he was saved then all of you and all the people of israel should know that it was in the name of jesus christ the nazarene whom you crucified whom god raised from the dead in his name this man stands before you healed he is the stone rejected by you the builders which has become the cornerstone there is no salvation through anyone else nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved the word of the lord [Music] [Music] the stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone has been give thanks to the lord for he is god for his mercy and yours forever it is [Music] is i will give thanks for you have answered me and have been my savior the stone which the is rejected has become the cornerstone [Music] oh blessed is he who comes in the name of our we lord you from the house of the lord [Music] i will give thanks to you for you have answered me and i've been my savior [Music] oh my god [Music] so a reading from the first letter of saint john beloved see what love the father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of god yet so we are the reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him beloved we are god's children now what we shall be has not yet been revealed we do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him for we shall see him as he is the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] i know [Music] me [Applause] me brothers and sisters the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to john jesus said i am the good shepherd a good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep a hired man who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away and the wolf catches and scatters them this is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep i am the good shepherd and i know mine and mine know me just as the father knows me and i know the father and i will lay down my life for the sheep i have other sheep that do not belong to this fold these also i must lead and they will hear my voice and there will be one flock one shepherd this is why the father loves me because i lay down my life in order to take it up again no one takes it from me but i lay it down on my own i have power to lay it down and power to take it up again this command i have received from my father the gospel of the lord beloved we are god's children now what we shall be has not yet been revealed we do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him for we shall see him as he is my brothers and sisters on this good shepherd sunday these words from today's second reading of saying john's first letter to the early church assures jesus's followers then and now of the truth of what saint peter filled with the holy spirit said to the leaders and elders of the jewish people as we heard proclaimed from the passage from acts this fourth sunday of easter that truth is this jesus through his death and resurrection has brought about a radical difference in human existence establishing a filial relationship with the transcendent god by the transforming power of love shared not just between the father and son but shared with us in the blessedness of this mutual love you and i are gathered to be disciples of jesus loving as he has loved us selflessly completely without counting the cost even choosing to lay down his life for another for you and for me unworthy sinners that we are when we patent our lives after that of jesus the good shepherd you and i partake in the newness of risen life given us at baptism as children of god we are conformed to christ who teaches us that even in fear and danger even in dying to self even in spending ourselves for a better life for others there is found great peace happiness and joyful fulfillment we come to know that this is the only way of living only in self-giving that you and i become united with christ the good shepherd and that this is what you and i are called to live as his flock his sheep his people disciples of the living christ it is how you and i grow to be more open to hear his voice calling us to follow him following him wherever he leads us even to the cross how attune are we to the voice of christ in our lives have we allowed ourselves to become distracted self-absorbed spiritually scattered have we drowned out the voice of the one we so desperately strained to hear the voice of compassion the voice of understanding and forgiveness the voice of unconditional and unqualified love the voice that is jesus himself our good shepherd it is he who speaks to us in the quiet of our hearts in the total accepting love of family and true friends in the cries of those who call out to us in need christ's paschal mystery bestows upon us the grace to hear the good shepherd's voice who is calling us to mercy to justice and to reconciliation amid the demanding and conflicting shouting that is present in our everyday living jesus gives life by his being a totally committed loving shepherd he validates our lowly existence saving us by offering his all to god the father and to us he desires to be personally intimately related to each and every one of us reflecting the same loving relationship he shares with his heavenly father speaking about this great love that the good shepherd has for his flock pope francis in a homily two men about to be ordained said this jesus is attentive to each of us he knows our hearts deeply he knows our strengths and our faults our achievements and our disappointments but he accepts us as we are he leads us with love and we in turn are called to know to follow and to love him through our love for one another i am the good shepherd says the lord i know my sheep and mine know me i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day according to the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen brothers and sisters knowing that god provides for our needs let us unite our prayers to those of christ the good shepherd that the holy father and all shepherds of the church will be faithful to the mission of laying down their lives in order to serve the people of god let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our president and all elected leaders that they will exercise their duties with genuine concern for the well-being of the people they serve especially the poor the marginalized immigrants and refugees the elderly and the unborn let us pray to the lord that married couples will be witnesses to the gospel message through their self-sacrificing love for one another lord for the special intentions that we bring to this mass and for those enrolled in the national shrine's prayer guild novena let us pray to the lord for all who have died and gone before us in faith the renewal constantly at work within us may be the cause of our unending joy through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you o lord but in this time above all to lord you yet more gloriously when christ our passover has been sacrificed he never ceases to offer himself for us but defends us and ever pleads our cause before you he is the sacrificial victim who dies no more the lamb once slain who lives forever therefore overcome with paschal joy every land every people exults in your praise and even the heavenly powers with angelic hosts sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim [Music] i [Music] r you are indeed holy and to be glorified o god who loves the human race who always walks with us on the journey of life blessed indeed is your son present in our midst when we are gathered by his love and when as once for the disciples so now for us opens the scriptures and breaks the bread therefore father most merciful we ask you to send forth your holy spirit to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ on the day before he was to suffer on the night of the last supper he took bread and said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice gave you thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore holy father as we celebrate the memorial of christ your son our savior whom you led through his passion and death on the cross to the glory of the resurrection and whom you have seated at your right hand we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again we offer you the bread of life and the chalice of blessing look with favor upon the oblation of your church in which we show forth the paschal sacrifice of christ that has been handed on to us grant that by the power of the spirit of your love we may be counted now and until the day of eternity among the members of your son in whose body and blood we have communion by our partaking of this mystery almighty father give us life through your spirit grant that we may be conformed to the image of your son confirm us in the bond of communion together with francis our pope wilton our bishop with all other bishops priests deacons and your entire people grant that all the faithful of the church looking into the signs of the times by the light of faith may constantly devote themselves to the service of the gospel keep us attentive to the needs of all that sharing their grief and pain their joy and hope we may faithfully bring them the good news of salvation and go forward with them along the way of your kingdom remember our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the peace of your christ and all the dead whose faith you alone have known admit them to rejoice in the light of your face and in the resurrection give them the fullness of life grant also to us when our earthly pilgrimage is done that we may come to an eternal dwelling place and live with you forever there in communion with the blessed virgin mary mother of
