that we may feel the working of your mercy grant that we may serve you with all our heart through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god for ever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah the lord god opens my ear that i may hear and i have not rebelled have not turned back i gave my back to those who beat me my cheeks to those who plucked my beard my face i did not shield from buffets and spitting the lord god is my help therefore i am not disgraced i have set my face like flint knowing that i shall not be put to shame he is near who upholds my right if anyone wishes to oppose me let us appear together who disputes my right let that man confront me see the lord god is my help who will prove me wrong the word of the lord thanks be to god i will walk before the lord in the land of the living i will walk before the lord in the land [Music] [Applause] is [Music] i will walk before the lord they surrounded me the [Music] grave stairs found me language [Music] [Music] the [Music] is [Music] i will walk [Music] he has kept my soul my eyes from tears and my feet from stumbling i will walk in the presence of the lord [Music] is [Music] a reading from the letter of saint james what good is it my brothers and sisters if someone says he has faith but does not have works can that faith save him if a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day and no one of you says to them go in peace keep warm and eat well but you do not give them the necessities of the body what good is it so also faith of itself if it does not have works is dead indeed someone might say you have faith and i have works demonstrate your faith to me without works and i will demonstrate my faith to you from my works the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] my brother [Music] [Music] who we are [Music] may i never boast except in the cross of our lord through which the world has been crucified to me and i to the world [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit the reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you lord and jesus said jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of caesarea philippi along the way he asked his disciples do people say that i am they said in reply john the baptist others elijah still others one of the prophets and he asked them but who do you say that i am peter said to him in reply you are the christ then he warned them not to tell anyone about him he began to teach them that the son of man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and rise after three days he spoke this openly then peter took him aside and began to rebuke him at this he turned around and looking at his disciples rebuked peter saying get behind me satan you are thinking not as god does but as human beings do he summoned the crowd with the disciples and said to them whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself take up his cross and follow me for whoever wishes to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ [Music] so [Music] [Music] whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself take up his cross and follow me did you just hear jesus say that in this morning's gospel don't you wish he hadn't he uh he doesn't pull any punches this jesus he bluntly warns us that the cross the cross is part of following him no way around it yesterday was a very moving day for us here in new york as we solemnly commemorated the 20th anniversary of the tragedy of 9 11. at a very meaningful prayer service here at a jammed st patrick's cathedral chief thomas richardson of the fdny the fire department of new york which still rightly grieves 343 firefighters who perish that day the chief recalled that famous episode that i think all of us are familiar with remember he recalled how the rescue workers on the work of examination in those toxic smoldering ruins discovered two huge iron girders that had been molded by the horrific fire into a cross the chief recounted how that cross which the rescue workers soon carried and placed high on that hill of rubbles and fumes and yes remains how it then radiated meaning to all who gazed upon it in those troubled days that hideous pile he recalled became the hill of calvary that cross shouted out that the death and the suffering and the sadness of that sight while never to be erased at least had meaning because those victims had company in their day of suffering as they carried their cross with christ six years ago when i had the honor of accompanying pope francis through the 911 memorial i i still recall how he stood before that cross and prayed for a long time touching it with his hands marveling as i recounted the story of chief richardson of yesterday now let's be realistic folks how we wish know that the cross were not such a part of life the press secretary of jesus i don't know if you had it or not he had a director of pr a director of his communications department saint peter remember how he called jesus aside and said you're off script master you start talking about this suffering and this cross and we're gonna we're gonna lose folks drop that and that of course earned from jesus one of his most stern castigations in the pages of scripture get behind me satan the other day i spoke with a new york police officer who's near death from brain cancer i'm glad i'm in a catholic hospital he says to me because i can look up at the cross in the room for my hospital bed every one of us here has a splinter from the cross in our lives some of us have actual planks here with us at mass this morning is superintendent jim mcmahon who led the state troopers in response to the 9 11 attacks himself now struggling with stage four cancer likely due from that exposure can i assure you and your wonderful family jim of our prayers for you as we try our best to help you carry your cross jesus tells us i am the way the truth and the life you bet he is he tells us the truth as he shows us the way which happens to be the way of the cross [Music] which leads to everlasting life the way the truth and the life we adore thee o christ and we praise thee because by thy holy cross thou hast redeemed the world i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen let us pray for the church that we may always reach out with the necessities of the body to those who have nothing to wear or no food for the day or a place to call home let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for world with angels and archangels thrones dominions all the hosts and saints of heaven we now sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] is [Music] therefore as we celebrate this memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you've held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your
