afternoon and welcome to the basilica of the national shrine of immaculate conception we're happy to have all of you with us for mass this afternoon and in a very special way i extend a warm word of welcome to those who join us through our live stream broadcast and through the eternal word television network we're happy to have our priest consultants with us this afternoon including our own director of pilgrimages monsignor vito bonano today we bring to a conclusion the centennial year begun last september marking the placing of the foundation stone on september 23rd 1920. outside of a few virtual lectures lenten reflections and choir concerts the coronavirus thwarted in-person festivities however i am thankful that through the goodness of our friends and staff we have been able to continue to fill our ministry amid the many restrictions the pandemic imposed as with any difficulty in life there are always blessings to be found for us here at mary shrine the pandemic led us into a new virtual ministry by live streaming our noon mass each sunday as well as our mass in spanish at 2 30. this ministry has helped us spiritually nourish more than three and a half million individuals and households since march 2020 has also extended the reach of mary shrine to nearly every corner of the world his eminence carter bull and gregory the archbishop of washington and chairman of the national shrine board of trustees was with us when we opened the jubilee year in 2020 and we are happy to have his eminence with us once again this afternoon today cardinal gregory carries the pastoral staff of the first director of the national shrine bishop thomas shane this closure was used 101 years ago by cardinal james gibbons of baltimore as he blessed and placed the foundation stone in addition the chalice which will be used at mass today is the first chalice of the national shrine which was used a century ago at the foundation stone mass and was made from jewelry given to the national shrine from the faithful throughout the united states in 1917. as we bring this centennial to a close we look forward to our next centennial year in 2024 when we will mark the first mass being celebrated in the shrine hopefully by then the world will be back to normal we won't have to wear face masks and this great upper church will be filled with all of the friends of mary shrine today's mass is celebrated and thanksgiving for the faithful supporter of mary shrine for the past 100 years and asking god's blessing and our latest intercession for the next 100 years in addition as our nation pauses this weekend to remember the horrific events of 9 11. let us also raise up to god at this mass those who died and those who still mourn their loss in tribute to the nearly three thousand who died on 9 11 the american flag flies from the knights tower beckoning all who pass mary shrine to never forget thank you for being with us may god bless you and mary always keep you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen peace be with you and with your spirit brothers and sisters in the lord as we bring this centennial year to a conclusion we place all of our lives before the father who loves us as we ask for his merciful forgiveness i confess to almighty god my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] [Music] christians [Music] is [Music] to those who plucked my beard my face i did not shield from buffets and spitting the lord god is my help therefore i am not disgraced i have set my face like flint knowing that i shall not be put to ceased upon [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] gracious is the lord and just our is [Music] me [Music] for he has freed my soul from my eyes from tears [Music] [Music] r [Music] a reading from the letter of saint james what good is it my brothers and sisters if someone says he has faith but does not have works can that faith save him if a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day and one of you says to them go in peace keep warm and eat well but you do not give them the necessities of the body what good is it so also faith of itself if it does not have works is dead indeed someone might say you have faith and i have works demonstrate your faith to me without works and i will demonstrate my faith to you from my works the word of the lord [Music] is [Music] accepting the cross [Music] me [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you jesus and his disciples set out for the villages as caesarea philippi along the way he asked his disciples who do people say that i am they said in reply john the baptist others elijah still others one of the prophets and he asked them but who do you say that i am peter said to him in reply you are the christ then he warned them not to tell anyone about him he began to teach them that the son of man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and rise after three days he spoke this openly then peter took him aside and began to rebuke him at this he turned around and looking at his disciples rebuked peter and said get behind me satan you are thinking not as god does but as human beings do he summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself take up his cross and follow me for whoever wishes to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it the gospel of the lord [Music] beloved brothers and sisters in christ jesus there is perhaps no more charming nor endearing artistic image of humanity than that of a mother with her child it causes and probably should beckon all of us to remember that special bond that we enjoy with a woman who has been with us from the very first moments of life it is certainly one of the most cherished religious images of all time motherhood is a primary human relationship universally identified with love nurturing patience and security it is such a dominant reality as to be identified oftentimes with life itself even god has a mother so primal is this human bond that the lord of all creation the one who fashioned the universe and keeps it in existence decided that motherhood with such a wonderful creation such a good idea that he desired to find one for himself alas we know that not every mother is flawless not all women can become mothers mothers are not always nurturing gentle or tender yet the image of a mother is such a compelling one that god himself chose to have one to call his very own moreover because god has a mother we share something in common with him god knows what it is like to be formed within a womb to be cuddled and caressed to be bathed and pampered god knows what it means to be human because he has a mother just like us this great basilica is a brick and mortar tribute to that mother who is perfect in every fashion for a century american catholics have helped to build and then traveled as pilgrim children to this place to honor the mother of the church god's own mother and the mother of countless children who all claim that she is uniquely theirs for she dresses in their garb looks like them speaks their languages and knows the secrets of the chur of her children's hearts for a century this sanctuary has been a place that was fashioned over time where people honor and pay tribute to our mother a hundred years is such a brief period of time when we consider the treasure of the mother for whom this church has been dedicated and consecrated however today we pause to recognize this past century of praise and honor for god's mother and our own there are many other sanctuaries in our nation that pray that pay reverence to the blessed virgin mary but this place is unique because it embodies both our national identity and the various tributes that people have offered to marry from the rich cultural ethnic and racial classes that belong to us for a century the chapels statues and shrines that are a part of this basilica remind us of the rich legacy of faith that we share when we honor the one who is mother to all her children and god's very own mother as well having a mother was for god a great idea and he chose the very best amen let us join our voices with the voice of the church in professing this prayer of faith i believe in one god father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen trusting in the abundant blessings of the lord let us join an offering now our prayers to our loving father that the church may be an instrument of divine reconciliation through the celebration of god's mercy in the sacrament of penance let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that world leaders will have a greater respect for the sanctity of marriage and family freedom of religion and the dignity of all human life especially in our own country let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the placing of the foundation stone of this national shrine may our visitors and pilgrims be inspired by the life and example of mary and grow in their devotion to her turning to mary in their every need and guided by her to to her son the savior of the world let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those suffering from the effects of the coronavirus and for their families and for all those who have lost their lives let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that god will bless the church with many priests deacons and religious so that the lord's promise of salvation may be heard by future generations let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that god will abundantly bless the benefactors and donors who made the national shrine a reality and who continue to support this patronal church of the united states let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that our deceased loved ones and all the faithful departed may inherit the rewards which are promised in the heavenly kingdom let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer heavenly father hear the prayers we offer in faith and through our celebration of these sacred mysteries bring us to the fullness of life in heaven through christ our lord amen we invite you to join in support of the ministry of the basilica of the national shrine during the unprecedented days where our ministry has been greatly limited your contributions are all the more appreciated thank you for being as generous as your means allow [Music] for me foreign [Music] oh [Music] so is [Music] this [Music] so [Music] [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] is [Music] uh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] pray sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father look with favor on our supplications oh lord and in your kindness accept these your servants offerings that what each has offered to the honor of your name may serve the salvation of all through christ our lord the lord be with you r lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for through his paschal mystery he accomplished the marvelous deed by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race a royal priesthood a holy nation a people for your own possession to proclaim everywhere your mighty works for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] oh is [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting up your sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope wilton our bishop and his assistant bishops the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion o merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father are in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done
