in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the prophet isaiah the lord has opened my ear for my part i made no resistance neither did i turn away i offered my back to those who struck me my cheeks to those who tore at my beard i did not cover my face against insult and spittle the lord comes to my help so that i am untouched by the insults so too i set my face like flint i know i shall not be shamed my vindicator is here at hand does anyone start proceedings against me then let us go to court together thinks he has a case against me let him approach me the lord is coming to my help who dare condemn me this is the word of the lord thanks be to god i will walk in the presence of the lord in the land of the living i will walk in the presence of the lord in the land of the living i love the lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal for he turned his ear to me in the day when i called to him i will walk in the presence of the lord in the land of the living they surrounded me the snares of death with the anguish of the tomb they caught me sorrow and distress i called on the lord's name o lord my god deliver me i will walk in the presence of the lord in the land of the living how gracious is the lord and just our god has compassion the lord protects the simple hearts i was helpless so he saved me i will walk in the presence of the lord in the land of the living he has kept my soul from death my eyes from tears and my feet from stumbling i will walk in the presence of the lord in the land of the living i will walk in the presence of the lord in the land of the living a reading from the letter of saint james take the case my brothers of someone who has never done a single good act but claims that he has faith will that faith save him if one of the brothers or one of the sisters is in need of clothes and has not enough food to live on and one of you says to them i wish you well keep yourself warm and eat plenty without giving them these bare necessities of life then what good is that faith is like that if good works do not go with it it is quite dead this is the way to talk to people of that kind you say you have faith and i have good deeds i will prove to you that i have faith by showing you my good deeds now you prove to me that you have faith without any good deeds to show the word of the lord alleluia my glory is the cross of our lord jesus christ that crucifies the world to me and me to the world alleluia the lord be with you reading of the holy gospel according to mark jesus and his disciples left the villages around caesarea philippi on the way he put this question to his disciples who do people say i am and they told him john the baptist they said others elijah others again one of the prophets but you he asked who do you say i am peter spoke up and said to him you are the christ and he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone about him and he began to teach them the son of man was destined to suffer grievously to be rejected by elders and the chief priests and scribes and to be put to death and after three days to rise again and he said this quite openly then taking him aside peter started to resonate with him but turning and seeing his disciples he rebuked them peter said to him get behind me satan because the way you think is not god's way but man's but he called the people and his disciples to him and said if anyone wants to be a follower of mine let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me for anyone who wants to save his life will lose it but anyone who loses his life for my sake and for the sake of the gospel will save it the gospel of the lord when i was in primary school i was in shepparton the place which is one of the hot spots for covert 19 at the moment in victoria so i know shepard and quite well and of a saturday evening i would spend the saturday evening as a little boy in primary school with my grandmother i remember it well especially when it was cold and in winter we'd be sitting around a heater and she would have one of those sticks or something of toddler owned chocolates it was special and on a saturday evening every saturday should break off two pieces one for itself and one for me and she wouldn't touch them again until the next saturday when it would come out because it was special and there'd be one piece for me and one piece for her and she was a wonderful lady would often she would often talk about things one of the things i remember was i'm not sure what the context was it obviously had something to do with something that was happening in the family and she said to me she said boy one of the hardest lessons to learn in life is how to really be a human being because no one knows how to and we make mistakes we have to learn how to be human i've never forgotten that and only now in my 60s i'm beginning to understand what my grandmother met unfortunately i can't tell her that she was right because she passed away decades ago today's gospel is one of the three very significant gospels which marks the turning point in every one of the synoptic gospels the gospels of matthew mark and luke and they have a common gospel like this the shortest of which is the one by mark the interesting thing that happens is that jesus finds his way to begin to tell his disciples what his future is what his purpose in life is what god the father wants of him and that is that he goes to jerusalem that he suffers and dies a horrible death and will rise again this no doubt has horrified his disciples who've just been told by him i'm the messiah and so you've got this conflictual experience the experience of the delight to be following the messiah the one that the whole of israel has been waiting for for thousands of years probably and for them to hear from him and what's my role in life not to get rid of the romans but to go to jerusalem and die a horrible death and they take him aside and say to him through peter this must not happen to you the gospel ends with a very intimate moment and i ask you to imagine what it sounds like he then turns to his disciples and says if anyone that means if you want to be a follower of mine you must renounce yourself and take your cross and follow me for anyone who wants to save his life will lose it but anyone who loses his life for my sake and for the sake of the gospel will save it what does it sound like is it jesus pronouncing something victoriously is it jesus like speaking at the beatitudes is it jesus rebuking people no go and read it listen to it what does it sound like it is very poignant it's jesus speaking to his disciples i think probably for the first time from the depth of his heart because they're saying to him you can't this can't happen to you and he says if you want to follow me you have to give up yourself you have to take up your cross and follow me what would you gain if you win the whole world and lose your life but if you lose your life for my sake in the gospel you'll save it what jesus is doing in this and you'll find it in matthew and luke as he's giving an apologia an experiential apologia for what's ahead of him it's not that he it's what he wants but he knows that this is the way he has to go and unless i die to myself i will not have life and yes you unless you die to yourself you cannot follow me because that's the way i'm going and unless you die to yourself you'll never know who you really are so john the cross has a very beautiful saying which goes like this unless you deny what you want you'll never know what it is you really want it's one of great truth we think we know what we want but until what we want as this happened in covert times is taken from us it's only then that we recognize what it is we really want we want other people we want relationship with others three years ago we could have been far from the mind of so many people it was things success money that they wanted covetous hit we've been denied we've had to renounce ourselves and we recognize what it is that we really want we begin to recognize who we really are jesus is going further in saying this you have to take up your cross and people often think the cross is the difficulty which is laid upon their shoulders no what is my cross my cross is who i am it's not what people ask me to do or the circumstances of life it is the man that i am that lives in the midst of these circumstances what's my real cross as jesus said if you're real cross greg is you and therefore you must carry the circumstances of life to understand who you are to and experience who you are this is the profound christian teaching we have from today and it's spoken by jesus in sadness and love he's saying i'm sorry but there's no other way it's the kind of thing john of the cross says in the second book of the ascent of mount carmel who can make this message easy nobody can because the message is hard because the message is i have to learn to live my own life i cannot blame my life on others i cannot blame what how i feel and what's happening in me on somebody else well maybe that they're a part of the story but until i accept who i am which is my personal cross and my personal cross is that by which i experience and impart of my own world and my cross forms me my cross molds me my cross crafts me it is the way god enters my life and i could like saint peter in today's gospel fight jesus and say no this must not happen and jesus will say no get behind me satan you must allow the world so to fall upon your shoulders that according to the man you are you will experience the cross which is your cross and that cross will perfect you it will make you beautiful and we know that because we've seen people with some extraordinary people who've carried their crosses and in that they have become real human beings rather than what we think we should be i have no idea what i should be because i'm already what god has made me and how do i go forward by living the life god has given me and finally for the sake of the gospel by allowing the gospel to infuse my life and make it possible for me to be the man that i am and to grow into what god wants me to be so listen to today's gospel take it to heart and be with jesus as he's almost crying as he's telling you this and don't be afraid because the gospel in his love will carry you let's stand and profess our faith i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen the lord is gracious and just a compassionate god who protects and saves his people let us turn to him in prayer salvation of all through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in you we live and move and have our being and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your care but even now possess the pledge of eternal life for having received the first fruits of the spirit through whom you raised up jesus from the dead we hope for an everlasting share in the paschal mystery and so with all the angels we praise you as in joyful celebration we acclaim holy god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope me your unworthy servant and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god blessed joseph her spouse the blessed apostles saint teresa saint john of the cross and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always lamb of god lamb of god take away the sins of the world behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i'm not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed [Music] our blessing is communion with the blood of christ [Music] and a bread we break it is a sharing in the body of the lord [Music] how can we make our return [Music] for all the goodness god has shown we will take the cup of life and call upon [Music] and let us pray oh lord may the working of this heavenly gift we pray take possession of our minds and bodies so that its effects and not our own desires may always prevail in us through christ our lord and before the final blessing i think we as australians should acknowledge how privileged we are and how our people almost all have responded well to what the government has asked us to do and even though we the pandemic is running around in some places we are doing what we need to do in order to avoid the spread of this virus unfortunately we should pray because there are many countries that are not as well officer as we are at this time and they are open to not only the spread of the pandemic but many deaths and let's pray that they soon may have what we as australians are so privileged to have health care vaccines and so many other things that they are human beings exactly as we are and in that sense should have and it is their due as much as as it is ours to have what is needed to avoid the virus and let's pray that somehow the world leaders will find a way to give the care needed in these other countries the lord be with you and with your spirit and bow your heads and pray for god's blessing may the lord grant you all his protection in this time of pandemic may he protect you those for whom you pray and those that you love in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the matter's ended go with the peace of christ thanks be to god [Music] glory of praise [Music] best to those who trust in his ways be the daughters and sons of him the wonders our god has done in every heart that sees glory and praise to our god who alone gives light to our days [Music] many are the blessings he bears to those who trust in his ways [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you
