thank you and may god bless you [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] is [Applause] [Music] is [Music] now the darkness shall be swallowed by the living word [Music] is [Music] in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit amen the grace and peace of god our father and the lord jesus christ be with you all friends we gather on this beautiful day to worship and praise our god and so therefore let us take a moment to prepare ourselves to enter into the sacred mystery recall our sins and ask for god's pardon in peace lord jesus you are the only begotten son of god lord have mercy lord have mercy christ jesus you're the sign of the father's love christ have mercy christ have mercy lord jesus you are with us for ages unending lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and lead us to everlasting life amen now let us raise our voices and praise of god by singing the glory [Music] we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king [Music] jesus christ [Music] you take away the sins of the world [Music] have mercy on us [Music] in the glory of god [Music] let us pray oh god look upon us creator and ruler of all things and that we may feel the working of your mercy grant that we may serve you with all of our heart we ask all these things through christ our lord amen a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah the lord god opens my ear that i may hear and i have not rebelled have not turned back i gave my back to those who beat me my cheeks to those who plucked my beard my face i did not shield from buffets and spitting the lord god is my help therefore i am not disgraced i have set my face like flint knowing that i shall not be put to shame he is near who upholds my right if anyone wishes to oppose me let us appear together who disputes my right let that man confront me see the lord god is my help who will prove me wrong the word of the lord thanks be to god i will walk before the lord [Music] living love the in because he has heard my voice in supplication because he has inclined his ear to me [Music] i will walk before the lord [Music] gracious is the lord and just yes our god is merciful the lord keeps the little ones i was brought low and he saved me [Music] [Applause] [Music] a reading from the letter of saint james what good is it my brothers and sisters if someone says he has faith but does not have works can that faith save him if a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day and one of you says to them go in peace keep warm and eat well but you do not give them the necessities of the body what good is it so also faith of itself if it does not have works is dead indeed someone might say you have faith and i have works demonstrate your faith to me without works and i will demonstrate my faith to you from my works the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] hallelujah [Music] foreign [Music] my sheep hear my voice [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the lord be with you and a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you o lord jesus and his disciples set out for the village of caesarea philippi along the way he asked his disciples who do the people say that i am they said in reply john the baptist others elijah still others one of the prophets then he asked them but who do you say that i am peter said to him in reply you are the christ then you warned them not to tell anyone about him he began to teach them that the son of man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and rise after three days he spoke to this openly peter took him aside and began to rebuke him at this he turned around looking at his disciples rebuked peter and said get behind me satan you are thinking not as god does but as human beings do jesus summoned the crowds with his disciples and said to them whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself take up his cross and follow me for whoever wishes to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ so in the gospel story jesus asked that powerful question who do the people say that i am now in some ways it seems like he's conducting a popular opinion poll based upon jesus's preaching as well as the miracles that people have witnessed have they formed an opinion of him now the apostles they give these wild answers john the baptist elijah one of the prophets now the common denominator amongst all those answers they are dead wrong and then he turns the question to his apostles notice they're all quiet they don't really know who jesus really is except peter peter answers and he says you are the christ now why is it that peter knows in the other 11 don't is it because peter is the smartest of all the apostles hardly he's a simple fisherman and he's illiterate it's because peter is the holiest of all the apostles hardly his faith vasculates sometimes it's hot sometimes it's cold remember the story in which jesus invites him to walk in the water peter takes a few steps starts sinking into the water jesus grabs them and he says oh ye of little faith the moment when jesus needed peter the most in his passion it's peter that denied him three times and he even knew jesus so it begs the question how does peter get it well i think we have to look to matthew's account of this story in which jesus says flesh and blood did not reveal this to you but my heavenly father here is the first lesson that we can take from this peter represents the church only in the church can we see and understand the fullest expression of the truth as well as the presence of god now some people will say i see you know god in the beauty of nature sure or i see god in special events the birth of a child sure but the fullest understanding of the presence of god and the knowledge of him can only come in the church in our doctrine and our dogma in sacred scripture in our rituals as well as our sacraments that's why it's so important to remain in the church now notice next in the story jesus teaches the disciples and us what discipleship really looks like he says whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself take up his cross and follow me now realize prior to jesus the cross was feared and hated by people it was an instrument of death and yet now through christ the cross becomes the greatest symbol of self-sacrificing love the world has ever known jesus climbs that cross for you and i he climbs that cross because he loves us so much he wants to save us and so jesus said there is no greater love than to lay one's life down for another that's what he did for us well now we must carry our cross in order to follow jesus now we have to live out that self-sacrificing love in the world for others yet notice here in the story before we can carry our cross we have to deny ourself which means we have to take on the attitude my life is not about me my wants my desires they all come first everything is second no we got to place that aside instead we have to put others before ourselves we have to serve the needs of others before we serve our own friends this is a powerful gospel for us this week strongly encourage you take some time this week can't afford not to reread this gospel pray over it jesus tells us his identity but he also reveals his mission and the consequence of that mission more to it he tells us our mission if we truly are authentic followers of christ i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen recognizing the presence of god in our midst we turn to him now with these petitions for the church that we may always reach out with the necessities of the body to those who have nothing to wear or no food for the day or place to call home we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for world leaders that they may lead their people with humility recognizing common dignity of all humanity and establishing and promoting policies that lift up those who are marginalized and forgotten we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our grandparents living and deceased that all they have done for their children and grandchildren may be appreciated and that they may be respected and revered by their loved ones we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all of us that we may welcome strangers and neighbors alike reaching out to satisfy their physical or spiritual needs we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the sick especially among our viewers and listeners may they know comfort in their fear we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for those who have died may they inherit the promise of everlasting life we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the needs and prayers of all of our heart of the nation parish members including those joining us from the state of illinois we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer god our father we ask you to hear our prayers and if it is your will to grant them through christ our lord amen [Music] lord have mercy on us grant us your peace bring us your healing o lord have mercy on us grant us your peace [Music] kindness reaching out [Music] [Applause] may every heart be found [Music] bring us your healing oh lord have mercy on us grant us your [Music] peace pray my friends that our sacrifice may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church amen oh lord look with favor on these supplications and in your kindness accept these your servants offerings that what each has offered to the honor of your name may serve for the salvation of all we ask all these things through christ our lord amen the lord be with you r and with your spirit lift up your hearts to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord in jesus death we celebrate and love his resurrection we confess with living faith and his coming again in glory we await with unwavering hope therefore we blend our voices with all the angels and saints as we acclaim [Music] [Applause] blessed [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so they may become for us the body and the blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread giving thanks broken gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me let us proclaim the mystery of faith [Music] and resurrection [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we are for you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope jerome archbishop and all the clergy remember all of our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy upon us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god joseph her most chaste spouse the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ throw him with him in him oh god almighty father and the unity of the holy spirit [Music] all glory and honor is yours forever and ever is [Music] [Applause] [Music] let us pray with confidence to the father in the words our savior gave us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil and graciously grant peace in our days by the help of your mercy may we always be free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ you said dear apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not upon her sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who lives and reigns forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you all and with your spirit let us offer one another a sign of christ's peace away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed may the body
