conception for the celebration of mass on this solemnity of the assumption of the blessed virgin mary in a very special way we are delighted to have with us as the celebrant for today's mass archbishop timothy broglio archbishop broglio is the archbishop for the military services and a member of the national shrine board of trustees as the archbishop for the military services archbishop broglio serves military personnel and families patients in veterans administration hospitals and federal employees serving outside the boundaries of the united states in 134 countries we're also happy to have with us for the first time since the chronovirus restrictions of 2020 the members of the catholic golden age as well as representatives from their home office in scranton pennsylvania george and barbara pagula as a part of this assumption liturgy the catholic golden age like candles for world peace with the senseless violence we continue to see in many of our cities and the unrest in many parts of the world together with the earthquake that hit haiti yesterday we are reminded of how important prayer is for us and for our world we're happy to welcome those who join us at home through our live stream broadcast and the eternal word television network this solemnity of the assumption is a very special day for ewtn as today marks the 40th anniversary of mother angelica flipping the switch and broadcasting the first program on ewtn we are honored to have been partnering with ewtn for 33 years today and all of us here at mary shrine extend our best wishes congratulations and blessings to all at ewtn especially michael warsaw the chairman of the board and chief executive officer of ewtn may mary assumed into heaven guide our steps on earth so that one day we may join with her in the glory of heaven in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen peace be with you let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] oh [Music] me [Music] me [Music] glory to the highest [Music] me is [Music] oh [Music] mercy on us [Music] right [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] let us pray almighty ever-living god who assume the immaculate virgin mary the mother of your son body and soul into heavenly glory grant we pray that always attentive to the things that are above we may be merits we may merit to share be sharers in her glory through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of revelation god's temple in heaven was opened and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple great sign appeared in the sky a woman clothed with the sun with the moon beneath her feet and on her head a crown of twelve stars she was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth then another sign appeared in the sky it was a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and on its heads were seven diadems its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky and hurled them down to the earth then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth to devour her child when she gave birth she gave birth to a son a male child destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod her child was caught up to god and his throne the woman herself fled into the desert where she had a place prepared by god then i heard a loud voice in heaven say now have salvation and power come and the kingdom of our god and the authority of his anointed one the word of the lord [Music] the queen stands [Music] right [Music] is right forget [Music] lord [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters christ has been raised from the dead the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep for since death came through man the resurrection of the dead came also through man for just as in adam all die so too in christ shall all be brought to life but each one in proper order christ the firstfruits then at his coming those who belong to christ then comes the end when he hands over the kingdom to his god and father when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power for he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet the last enemy to be destroyed is death for he subjected everything under his feet the word of the lord [Music] [Music] my [Music] is exhaust [Music] the lord be with you our reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of judah where she entered the house of zechariah and greeted elizabeth when elizabeth heard mary's greeting the infant leaped in her womb and elizabeth filled with the holy spirit cried out in a loud voice and said blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb and how does this happen to me that the mother of my lord should come to me for at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears the infant in my womb leaped for joy blessed are you who believe that what was spoken to you by the lord would be fulfilled and mary said my soul proclaims the greatness of the lord my spirit rejoices in god my savior for he has looked upon his lovely servant from this day all generations will call me blessed the almighty has done great things for me and holy is his name he has mercy on those who fear him in every generation he has shown the strength of his arm and has scattered the proud in their conceit he has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly he has filled the hungry with good things and the rich he has sent away empty he has come to the help of his servant israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy the promise he made to his fathers to abraham and his children forever mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home the gospel of the lord [Music] dear brothers and sisters in christ here in the basilica and those also who follow us by other means of social communication two of the many italian parishes in cleveland where i was raised celebrate the assumption as their principal feast neither however is dedicated to the blessed virgin mary under that title both carry an image of our lady through the streets in imitation of customs brought to these shores by their grandparents the festivities street fairs and summer joy highlight an essential element of this solemnity which is quite clear in the profound word of god just proclaimed the singular privilege given to the mother of god communicates hope for us the new ark of the covenant moves with haste to accomplish a mission offers hope and teaches us how to praise almighty god authentically the author of that symbolic passage in the first reading portrays the woman as the new ark of the covenant bearer of the incarnate presence of the son of god how can we not see her in that role in the gospel where the child in the womb of elizabeth recognizes the christ in the womb of mary she is associated with eve israel and the church a trio which originates in the old covenant and is brought to conclusion in the new all three are recognizable in the woman of the book of revelation the woman suffers labor pains because the people of god despite our vocation to holiness is sinful we continue to suffer the effects of original sin even though we have been reborn in baptism the weakness of the human condition [Music] weighs us down and yet we long to respond generously to the voice of the lord after more than a year of pandemic restrictions how can we fail to recognize our dependence on almighty god have we not learned to pray more intensely as we witness the suffering of so many or perhaps have suffered ourselves have we not learned to value simple freedoms as we had to sacrifice so many of them in our daily routine suddenly restricted by the fear of disease and its contagiousness like mary we have learned to move with haste to accomplish our mission hers was one of great charity motivated by an earnest concern for her cousin elizabeth also with an unexpected an unexpected child in her womb the language and images that saint luke uses immediately called to mind the passages of the second book of samuel where king david transfers to jerusalem the ark of the covenant the meeting place between god and humanity a part of that same route would have been used by mary to go to the hill country of judea she is bearing the perfect place of encounter between god and man she is the new ark that of the old testament was in the holy of holies of the temple in jerusalem whose western wall is now all that is left now the new ark has her place in the heart of the holy trinity because of the resurrection of christ her son the mystery of the temple as god's dwelling place is fulfilled in the blessed virgin mary and foreshadows the role of each baptized person we must never forget the truth of our reality as a temple of the holy spirit and potentially an opportunity for others to be drawn into an encounter with a living god that is always coupled with our appreciation of the other as one created by the father in his image and likeness one more reason why you and i respect others this solemnity is for us because it is an incredible source of hope all of those who hear the word of god and keep it are blessed receive fulfillment of the promise the pandemic reminded all of us of our mortality this path of life has an end but it is not an abyss we were baptized into eternal life so that we could prepare ourselves for the fullness of life at the end of our pilgrimage from the cross the lord jesus gave us mary as our mother so that we could follow her example trust in her and allow ourselves to be led by her into the fullness of life it is true that the assumption indicates a privilege but it is also fundamentally a demonstration for us of our goal our mother has gone before us to make sure that we can find the way together we pray that mary the mother of beginnings will accompany us in our tribulations and guide us unswervingly to dwell forever with the lord in glory think of the image of a mother testing the temperature of a baby's meal before offering a spoonful to the child it is a gesture of self-giving to ensure that the child is not burned with something too hot let us allow ourselves to feel the comforting embrace of our mother assumed into heaven as we gather in her house to be nourished with word and sacrifice that do not burn or harm yesterday the church celebrated saint maximilian kolbe who gave his life so that another might live he made that sacrifice because he knew that death was merely the necessary threshold to a more abundant life that should give us confidence on our ultimate journey consequently we join the blessed virgin mary in her canticle of praise repeated every evening in the church's official prayer she certainly had her own reason for praising god and the blessings on israel his people her prayer of praise is deeply rooted in the old testament because she sings of the mercy or the hessed of almighty god after the exodus which is the rootedness of israel and her liberation from egyptian slavery salvation now touches the ultimate victory over sin and death the definitive promised land she teaches us to hope in the eternal mercy of a loving father is that not also a lesson for us as pope benedict xvi reminded us in deus caritas est i quote the magnificat is entirely woven from from threads of holy scripture here we see how completely at home mary is with the word of god with ease she moves in and out of it she speaks and thinks with the word of god her thoughts are attuned to the thoughts of god her will is one with the will of god since mary is completely imbued with the word of god she is able to become the mother of the word incarnate are we in the same position are we completely imbued with god's word have we found our place in god's story of salvation as bishop baron asks saint paul tells us to let the word of god dwell in you richly we do not process through the streets today as they will in cleveland this evening which is probably positive given the heat but as pope francis recommended we do gather in the house of our mother to sing her praises participate in the one life-giving sacrifice of her son and we pray go forth renewed in hope on our pilgrimage to be joined with her in the presence of almighty god i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages and god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified and has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen trusting in mary's intercession we now offer to god our needs and those of the whole world that all members of the church will be inspired by mary's example to rediscover god in their own life and to be authentic witnesses of their faith in the world let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for our president legislators judges and all those in service to the common good that through the gift of heavenly wisdom they may never tire in their work to uphold religious freedom the sanctity of marriage and the dignity of all human life from the first moment of conception until natural death let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for doctors nurses and all health care professionals that through their gifts they may cure the sick heal the injured and comfort the dying let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all those affected by natural disasters especially those who are suffering from the devastating effects of the earthquake in haiti for those who have lost their lives and for their families let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for true and lasting peace throughout the world and our own nation and communities and for all those who have suffered the effects of war terrorism and violence let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer that many will respond to god's call to serve the church as priests deacons and consecrated religious let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for those intentions entrusted to the national shrine for remembrance during our assumption novena and for the intentions we hold in our hearts let us pray to the lord r lord coming to perfection and a sign of sure hope and comfort to your pilgrim people rightly you would not allow her to see the corruption of the tomb since from her own body she marvelously brought forth disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took this precious chalice in his holy and venerable hands and once more giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the
