causes trouble and by it many become defiled that no one semicolon again run-on sentence that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau who sold his birthright for a single meal for you know that afterwards when he desired to inherit the blessing he was rejected for found no chance to repent though he sought it with tears see to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God I want a title for Super Bowl 52 amen you guys have a football team here oh that's right I forgot that awesome um my back I just forgot honest mistake honest mistake god bless oh man have you guys seen these fidget spinners [Applause] so I have a 12 year old I have a 10 year old and I have an eight-year-old I think a 10 year old 11 now but come on I got three all right it's hard to keep track but um they're really into fidget spinners right now and when I would I say individual spinners it's all we talk about at every every dinner table every it's all fidget spinners right and so I finally I lost it okay and you know you can sit there and judge me but you're single so I I you know what I mean oh my gosh I love single people who judge parents oh my gosh I pray God gives you eight children eight of them eight of them with snotty nose syndrome the syndrome oh my gosh what is wrong with their children uh their children shut up so I lost it oh you're terrible I lost it okay I'm like I can't I don't want anyone else in this all just say fidget or spinors separately or together I'm done because every single day right now okay my kids come to me like hey Dad you want to see our new fitted spinner oh my gosh no we have 1400 fidgets spinners we have every kind of color of fidget spinners well the fidgets spinner is so weird can we admit America hey man want to get together and play with our fitted spinners what'd you say to it like I play I got these the kids got the frigid spin another like dad dad can you do this and I'm like what he's like look I can spit it on one finger I picked it up I put it on one finger is like wow I might not Wow son not Wow it's called gravity it's called balance he's like can you do this I'm like you mean this son this is not a talent this is not a sport this is not okay this is spigot spinners and they're killing our country read a book vote and quit using your bigoted spinners if you heard of the slime like the slime is also a phenomenon right now have you aware this like this is that sir if this is my life my life I got kids yes my life slime like you go you get you get you can YouTube it and you can make your own slime at home it's like an inordinate amount of shaving cream and food coloring it is literally my worst nightmare okay I can't get anything on my clothes I don't want anything in my house right like I paid for my house my kids didn't pay for the house okay so what I say goes right so they started making all this slime and I'm like no this is not okay we're getting rid of the slime slime has been outlawed in the house unbeknownst to me I was gone recently just away from my wife just briefly and she reset ground rules in the house biblically she's outside of her covering and I told her that and she disagreed so I was like cool we're talking about later to help repel me all right what fine talk about this later if that works in your schedule yeah so we got slime like it's lightweight it's everywhere so Mike you can go out to the woods and make slime I literally said that there like that the we don't live by the woods well eventually if you keep walking you'll find woods and go concoct your slime in the woods right like go go go and so recently we were at our Kirkland location in our church in Seattle and it's by the original Costco you know useless details preachers share and him Zion has slimy it's like dad dad check it out he's like Islamic you make that at the house is like no I'm like alright fine what is it he's like that it's Matt green slime and I'm like am i I'm sorry son there's a lot of things I want to encourage you around you know like your flag football team your grades education I'm not going to tell you good job making Matt green slime this is this is gross I don't want to touch it it's ridiculous it gets worse my daughter she was making this is before slime was outlawed in our house she was making slime and she thought wow this food coloring is really phenomenal and so she took this red food coloring and she put it in her mac and cheese unbeknownst to us I wasn't there I wasn't eating with my kids I wasn't paying attention to him right so she eats a whole plate of red mac and cheese we don't know this I never saw the deed I never saw it right hours later she has to go not number one but number two so she goes upstairs that goes in the toilet and what comes out of her is glowing red stool I freaked out she yell she's like daddy dad writes my princess right if it's the boys I'm like I'll be there in a while yeah but it's the girl so I run up and I'm like go Oh God right I'm a man of a preacher word of God no scriptures came to mind just Oh God Jozy right I'm just stunned standing around the bowl right Chelsea what's up and now the whole family sitting there and great feels like dad what's wrong with knife my school she wouldn't say school she doesn't know that but that's appropriate gathering vernacular and I go oh my god oh my god I'll take her I'll take her to Urgent Care come on come on sweetie get your clothes on we get your shoes like come on let's go let's go and Chelsea's just kind of quiet and she's thinking you know she's thinking she's thinking she does most of that in the family and she's thinking and she's like she's like Gracie did you did you have any food color and she's like mama what's that the ridiculous stuff you put in that slime she's like oh yeah I had read back in cheese tonight so we discipline der digit spinners and slime welcome to my life credibly glamorous whatever reasons I'm so sick of these fidgets finish this is we have so many of them right and and here's what the kids do they say stuff like this they're like that dad I'm gonna get a new video spinner I'm like no you're not I'm not paying for it like you don't have to it's my own money this is ridiculous since when did a ten-year-old ever have his own money it's not your money it's money that I gave you that you in theory call your money but it's really not your money it's all my money right so I'm like it's so I try to like play that he's like no no no dad Grammy gave me this oh my god Grammy so he uses his own money and he keeps buying fidgets spinners and I finally set the voice down oh my voice you have plenty of fidgets spinners but of course what I'm dealing with is a real human condition that not just my boys exclusively wrestle with right and it's a deal that we all have and that is we always like new stuff new stuff a fidget spinner can be two days old but the one that's on Amazon Prime on its way it's far more exciting because we are conditioned whether it is our first world conditions whether it is our Western world our culture whatever it is we our condition we are developed we are raised with this elation excitement anticipation of everything that is new even if it's not new if it's new to you it's new right like I have something in my closet you're like wow that's cool I'm like that I got that like three years ago I'd give it to you and what I could not care less about anymore and look over you now are proud of because to you it is new so much of our culture is predicated upon have you gotten something new is that is that new it's new Wow and if it's new it's those greater value even if you have something just like it but the new one on the way the new car the new shirt the new anything that's new I'm not saying this is inherently wrong or necessarily evil by any means it's a state of fact when observing culture we enjoy anticipate look for and are rewarded by new things I want something new now again that may be a reality for you okay and I don't know if that's just if that's just a first world problem but it is and we are blessed and by the way grateful to be a part of this country those you from this country we are we're blessed and I'm grateful for that so we've stated the fact that we are conditioned for new things here's the problem you become a Jesus follower and you are also simultaneously living within a culture that is generally blessed there is many struggling and many marginalized so forgive my generalizations tonight but generally bless them so as a result we're conditioned to new things you insert yourself now into a new domain known as the kingdom of God you become a worshipper of God and a follower of Jesus and subconsciously without ever investigating or actually even being aware of it you still crave new things you want new things and then here comes God and he doesn't do new things based on our cultural context or our ways and so insert frustration right so for instance come the message of the gospel right the writer of Hebrews he's writing to Jewish believers who by the way context real quick everything was going great for this church until an outbreak of persecution new regimes evil dictators begin to rise to power and now in the base in the actual writing time of this letter to the Hebrews the Jewish believers they are now dying people are being killed people are being crucified whole businesses are being eradicated because now Jesus followers are not popular they're coming under persecution and scrutiny so the writer of Hebrews writes to these Jewish believers and says essentially don't give up keep at it Jesus loves you God didn't promise it would always be smooth sailin and so now we find ourselves towards the end of the letter and the writer of Hebrews goes on he says now see to it see to it that no one misses out on the grace of God no that's a really interesting phrase which kind of connects I thought about new news I want to connect and form all because remember he's writing to people who have accepted Jesus not to people who don't know the grace of Jesus but those who have accepted the free gift of Jesus grace and he said see to it that nobody misses out on obtaining the grace of God and I read that I thought how does someone who loves Jesus and having accepted the grace of God miss out on obtaining the grace of God well it's what Galatians says it says you set aside the grace of God Galatians 2 Galatians 5 says you've fallen from the grace of God how does someone who's received a free gift of Jesus Christ forgiven forever without an without end past present and future sin how do you set aside grace how do you fall from grace I'll tell you exactly how it just gets old it just gets old it's just yeah grace of God yeah for sure man cool it becomes jargon it becomes a phrase it becomes a statement it becomes something that we say like praise the Lord hallelujah grace of God good news gospel and one of the giveaways when we know that we are prone to this is when somebody gets up and says something like Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so and something inside of us goes yeah I know that song yeah I know that it's I've been pastoring I say my dad's church I suppose it's not dad's Church it's God's church and I preached for about we've been doing it for like seven years and and it's amazing you get emails you know you get emails from people in the church which is great like they care enough to send emails good or bad they at least carry it up to say like it's more scary when no one send you emails you know I mean so be grateful for the emails that you do get good or bad right so I just don't read the bad one so I feel really good about myself okay but they send emails and you'd be surprised at some of the emails and what they'll say they'll say hey we so appreciate Jude and everything he's been preaching is he are we going to always talk about huh you know great because you know we'd like to kind of just make sure that we're kind of getting to a balanced diet and none of those people are evil and they mean well I'm grateful that they take the time to email but they give themselves away don't say why because we're prone to kind of go this again really come on press the light we're going to do this again come on charge Jesus rose from the dead everybody cares you're like yeah I get it we get it faster and what's amazing is these Hebrews seem to be tempted to forget what they have I think one of the great problems we're going to face is the ability or in some cases the inability to recall rehearse and remember what we really have in Jesus and I'm going to tell you something else because I love you times may not get better they might get worse in fact the Bible might allude to that subtly do we know what we have in Jesus see to it that nobody fails to obtain the grace of God before we go any further let's unpack what the grace of God is and by doing so we'll also in turn tell you what it is not the grace of God about a concept or a principle it's a person that person is the Lord Jesus Christ who is full of grace and truth and so anytime you see the word grace you can insert the name Jesus they're synonymous he is the word made flesh he is the grace of God personified and of course the grace of God can be explained simply from 2nd Corinthians 5:21 where it says he who knew no sin became sin so that you and I might become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus the grace of God is the gift from the father in the person of Jesus and we can have all of him and all of his benefits not by earning deserving pedigree past but by simply receiving the gift of Jesus right so that what we're here tonight to celebrate is news we're just here for news and the news we are bound to always make it good because it is so people come to our churches and say man I'm just glad you guys are positive but we don't have an option the word gospel which is a Bible word literally means news that good not news that's bad news that's good how can you have news that's good when so much of the news in our country is bad because this news this transcendent it is stood the test of time it goes beyond cons country continent regime kingdoms prince king president he is the same yesterday today who made the film or makes me want to preach turn your neighbor say check maintenance care so so it's the the news of Jesus and it's always good because he's always good and so we're supposed to tell everybody about the news of Jesus and we're supposed to stay in bigger aided by the news the good news about Jesus and we're supposed to say inspired by the good news about Jesus and we're sort of thing about the good news about Jesus and were supposed to dance about the good news about Jesus and we're supposed to love people in our city and be on time at work and serve our bosses and be good employees because we're so filled with this news that's so good about Jesus and what he's done for me you know I will I once was lost of environment now I can see it I'm saved and however those lyrics go you know I mean like it's the news about Jesus that's good that defines our our lives but we get we get tired and and then life happens and the news about Jesus is good we're just things aren't going good because things aren't going good the news doesn't seem as good do you know like when the gospel is really good when everything's good but sometimes the gospel just doesn't seem as sensational when things in your life aren't good and somebody has to walk up to you and say god is good and they expect you to say oh - but what you want to say is sometime see to it that no one misses out on obtaining the grace of God semicolon or see to it it's not like on that no root of bitterness brings up and causes root of bitterness root of bitterness now in anybody grow up in church if you didn't if you didn't it's okay stay genuine and simple um some of us we with layers so we've had to wade through but the church is getting brighter and better and more beautiful and we love church even if sometimes we're mad weird okay but if you grew up in church you've heard of the root of bitterness now if we insert this concept when we meet someone who clearly is mean and usually like if we have a conversation with you if we're a Christian and we go to church and we care about and you tell us yeah I hate my dad I hate him and we go oh root of bitterness right this is what we know about the root of bitterness right you're like I hate we're not friends anymore I hate my friend and something triggers on the inside from our Bible teaching root of bitterness that may be true in a very small sense but that's not what the root of bitterness is here it's actually not that you don't like that loved one or that friend anymore it's actually not just unforgiveness in your heart you know the root of bitterness actually is remember the context is what obtain the grace of God he says if you don't obtain the grace of God that by the way we get a little bit ahead of ourselves how do you how do you obtain the grace of God how do you keep receiving the grace of God if you receive it one time and you're saved you do it by second Peter chapter 3 and verse 18 you grow in the Grace and the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and so you're supposed to keep growing in grace and all that means translation is that you keep telling the story of Jesus over and over and over it still gives you goose pimples it still makes you cry it still makes you shout it still makes you sing it still makes you dance you still in love with Jesus you still get excited when you talk about all that Jesus is and what he's done and he rose again on the third day and he seated on high forever say it still itches always so we've got to keep setting up lunches and breakfasts and dinners with each other and we got to sing songs and melodies one to another we've got to actually know the Bible set sometimes when you need to rehearse and recover and receive again the grace of God you need to get together and sing to each other I thought about singing there for a second you know preachers who egg you on but you can't make me do it but we need to get together more and tell each other about Jesus - you tell me about Jesus and then I'll take a turn tag you're it I'll tell you right now Jesus he he that what is that's growing in the grace it's not just listen to good sermons it's not just it's not just memorizing it it's you got to verbalize the faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God you need to tell your story which is God has changed because of his story in his love and you got it you need to go to Starbucks more with your friends for real and talk about Jesus that's how you grow in the grace if you don't keep obtaining the grace of God and keep the main thing the main thing what ends up happening is you are susceptible to a root of bitterness oh the word root of bitterness it's anchored in this Hebrew thought and the word picture is very simple it's actually a toxic bile that the liver secretes and so the root of bitterness is actually this subtle toxic concept of God that starts to leak into your life and you know what it is you know where this exact phrase is used elsewhere in a story Acts chapter 8 you know that story the Apostles are laying hands on people and people are falling out in the Holy Ghost I mean it is unbelievable right they're praying for people and the drug dealer named Simon the sorcerer he kind of witnesses this and he walks up to the Apostles finally gets an audience with Peter and he's like my man I need some of this listen I run these blocks I run the street this is my neighborhood my place listen is you can give me that we got the total package we'll be a partnership we will make money read my lips money okay let's do this and Peter looks to them and says a lot of mean things what's your true like you do you are so wrong need to repent you're bad and he says I can tell you have a root of bitterness that's interesting he says you have a toxic leak in your life that has warped your view of God now what was what was Simon's view of God I'll tell you how he viewed God is very simple he saw God as an improvement plan to his business right so God whoa whoa whoa whoa I run this block but if I can get that whatever that oh that's God cool I'm in God pray God amen hallelujah can I get that okay because he will round out my resume so Peter hooked me up and Peter's like oh man you got a leak and it's toxic and it's bad because you think Jesus the power of God is a commodity or an accessory you know no you don't know that's not that's not how that's not how God works you don't want to make Jesus a necklace you don't want to don't don't that's a root of bitterness now what's what the writer of Hebrews says now why would the writer of Hebrews write to the Hebrews to tell them this you know why because circumstances were good that extended to teen season apiece now they're under great persecution and when times get bad this is when we get leaks in our view of God and we start to wonder since things are going bad is God always good and then what comes to the surface is to truth and that is that many of us decided to follow Jesus I'm not saying it's wrong we all susceptible to this we start following Jesus because we starting to get a sense that he will enhance our human experience well I like this man who Wow this is Jesus yeah there's more to it yeah but I'm I'm I'm in so we have these seasons of peace whew man God good and heal God's good man got good and then here comes life and please understand life will touch us all and all the sudden mystery happens things that are inexplicable things that pastors can't even explain to you and you start to go wait a second what about God yeah yeah yeah the ancient Hebrews you know what they were thinking about is this is this worth it is God and actually context you literally they were talking about should we go back to the temple the synagogue and add returning into the law while also keeping Jesus because clearly Jesus leads how should I say a little help because this isn't going good and notice the writer of Hebrews says be careful arruda bitterness will spring up and and it will defile many and now it's spread like leaven in the community and everybody has this premise that Jesus will make everything better not true Jesus sometimes makes things worse wait a minute wait a minute and then I didn't say in the end but sometimes I remember as a youth pastor we were preaching Jesus and you know I've just preached Jesus I just thought it was so simple so easy and this Buddhist young lady came up and she said I accepted Jesus I'm like ha someone give me a how to get you a great so our next week said her bag or clothes everything with her and she's like what do I do now and I'm like what do you mean she's like my mom kicked me out she rejected me said I'm no longer a part of the family and I'm no longer to be named among them and she will never talk to me again as long as I live but I'm in like I want to follow Jesus so what should where should I live just a place I could live what should I do and I was like let's um are you sure you want to we could not tell your mom yeah so beware of a root of bitterness that springs up and defiles many and then we're almost done and says semicolon so that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau wait what Unitas I read my Bible I'm like cool grace of God root a bitterness kind of mysterious hard to understand did some study got it okay great and don't be like Esau Genesis 25 you may not be familiar the story you may Esau is one of the sons of Isaac he's got a brother named Jacob if you don't know a Jacob is the hairless wonder he's he's a mama's boy he likes to cook and Esau is a hairy hunter who is his dad's favorite in an Esau's name actually means hairy it's very profound now remember the audience is Jewish so they actually know about Esau he saws not famous for the right reasons he says um hey keep telling each other about the grace of God let it give you chills sing about it write about it talk about it have coffee about it like beat me about it if you don't these toxic ideas about God will leak into your life they'll infest the community and then you'll end up making dumb decisions like Esau what did Esau do it's actually very simple if you could remember the story Esau is out hunting like he does Jacobs at home with his mom cooking like he does and Esau comes in Genesis chapter 25 and he is starving right he's hungry and he goes because yo Jacob that smells good he was cooking lentil soup I grew up on lentil soup good stuff good stuff looks like it sidetracked let's keep the main thing the main thing here tonight okay guys fixing some lentil soup and Esau comes he's like I'm starving can I get some and Jacob site oh you you hungry huh may I'm about to die he says yeah I'll give you Amelie so you make a deal with me he sounds like I'm sorry what make a deal yeah make a deal make a trade infos like what what's the trade man um your birthright now you may not know historically in the Hebrew faith in the Hebrew history those who have a birthright get more than double any other child in the family it would set the trajectory of the rest of their life they would never be in want and they would be that they would be the leader of the family when the parents were gone this is Esau's birthright now now now now back in real time he hasn't realized that birthright yet and right now he's hungry right now he hungry and so so Jacob goes so you you're hungry I'm dying he says give me your birthright and listen to Esau's words he says well I'm about to die what use is this birthright to me meaning right now where's car right now where can I translate I know I truly believe the whole reason the Esau stories in the Bible you know why because the way Esau treats this birthright is the way we treat Jesus that's why I said in the Bible I asked God I said is this Hebrews 12 messages mean and he said it's about me it's about me why because right now I need Jesus to help me and it seems like he's irrelevant he's what is this birthright to me what is the grace of God to me I'm hungry I'm sick I'm alone I'm depressed I don't got a job right now Jesus nothing happened God God God I need you right now right now right now Oh Jake that scripture and second Peter chapter 3 verse something's home where it says that one day is like a thousand years with the Lord it preaches so good but translation it means he's not on your timetable and that usually stinks right right now I need a job now when right now God is there those are good moments but I got a sense there some people right now who feel hungry god I'm appreciate your grace and everything man but I've been praying for years and nothing's happening so you can't fault me for this I'm going to choose the bowl over the birthright I'm I'm tired of people like I can't believe so-and-so slept together I can they got tired right now and the next day they wake up and they regretted and they go I love Jesus you love Jesus all along it's just in the moment Jesus seemed far far away and so you start to you know what it says about he saw it says and he went up from that place he ate he ate it all he ate it all I mean if you're going to send sin all the way I used to tell somebody they're gonna choose the bowl over the birthright lick the bowl I'm not sure that scriptural but he ate the whole meal and he got up and you know what he did Bible says he despised his birthright and I run into a lot of people who will spend eternity in heaven who meanwhile down on earth just shrug off the grace of God well yeah it's cool man whatever did you did you do what he saw did yeah but I don't care the more you tell us you don't care the more we know you care it's eating you alive isn't it I just like a tired man yeah I've been there right right now I need God I know I do - he's here he's just not always here the way we want him to be here and so we start to wonder and we get a leak deep in the inside of our soul and we start to go maybe I need to help God out maybe I need to do a little maybe God does help those who help themselves and maybe Jesus is good but he's not the whole story maybe maybe Jesus is a part of my journey but he's not in the whole journey because Jesus still hasn't delivered my job' still hasn't delivered my career he still hasn't given me what I want he still hasn't made good he still hasn't followed through so I'm going to leave him on Sundays and I'm gonna do what I got to do on Tuesdays that's that's a root of bitterness and the results of that won't be what you want have you ever made a dumb decision I have I have I I can relate to Esau but I think there's a message in here for us isn't there who is Jesus to us anyway who is Jesus I don't want you to tell me who Jesus is when times are good I'm not saying when times are good that's bad when times are good that's good but who is Jesus when you find yourself in a season like the old ancient Jewish believers who is Jesus then well I'm not sure right now because it hurts right now can I say it like this right now is overrated it's overrated who is Jesus to you why did we start to follow him again what was it what was the impetus what was what was the deciding factor what put us over the edge what was it again and you need to accept Jesus he he's going to give you a great purpose for your life all I think that's a fine statement but that's not the impetus I was lost I was broken I was doomed I was not a good person and Jesus came and he just um he rescued me from what from myself and and right now I feel pain and right now I feel uncomfortable and right now I feel a little bit like God where where are you but you got a mast and I I started following Jesus for Jesus hope that's okay to say I started following Jesus for for Jesus that's the message of Hebrews he's like a you left the synagogue for Jesus you left the law for Jesus you gave up everything for for Jesus do you want Jesus I'm not the only one that sometimes feels like I would rather have my circumstances improve then have time with Jesus you know what I'm tired of in me is circumstantial worship guilty as charged any good he's got right I mean you look around sunshine it whew I wouldn't know how fragile my face is just touch one part of my life and my emotions crumble I don't want to be that man long-term only beat somebody who loves Jesus come hell or high water I want to love Jesus no matter what happened whatever it is I want Jesus I don't know what's happening right now I don't know what's happening right now the truth is there are people in this room by the dozens and maybe the hundreds and there I say even the thousands who right now stink and you're in pain right now you know what we need to do we need to receive again the grace of God all right now I know this sounds funny I promise I'm done and someone can call thank you you're back lovely I promise I'm I'm done I was sitting in the airplane on my way to LA and I was in seat 3a that's first-class free upgrade everyone calm down and I was kind of having one of the right now moments God but right now right now right now right now evidence you little things you know you shouldn't do because you're just tired right now right now god I can't I can't be a man of God right now I can't be full of faith right now I'm tired right now and he said I want you to go over how I've been with you your whole life and so I started writing it down I started writing it down I started I used to travel with my dad a Dragonslayer seminar his he'd bring his nine-year-old son up on the stage and that nine-year-old son hadn't told his testimony until last week on Wednesday I'm now 38 but at 9 years old I would get up to every single state in America except two I think we missed out of North Dakota and South Dakota you know what I mean but I would get up every night at the end of that seminar and he said this is my son and he's got a destiny and I wanted to share your testimony I'd get in front of a a hall or a building or not tour him full of young people and I would say hi my name is Judas Manson I believe I'm called to be a preacher well you may not know about me I had a high-pitched little voice of skinny little nine-year-old I would tell them hey before I was 1 years old I almost died three times well you may not know about me is when I was 6 months
