this was without a doubt one of the most intense experiences of my flying career thus far oh my god if you want a full power full bar seven or nine or nine or one for traffic Kissena maintain six out out of seven thousand six thousand each year mmm very good Bri Brandon Brooke and I took a weekend trip to Loveland Colorado and we spent all Sunday flying back to San Marcos Texas we knew the whole day that San Marcos would most likely be IFR when we arrived and we were okay with that since I would get to experience a real instrument approach in actual conditions for my first time but little did we know that it was going to be right down to minimums to our surprise the weather got worse as the day progressed we were carefully watching to make sure it wasn't going to fall below minimums which is a half mile visibility and 200-foot ceilings we had several alternate airports in mind and I planned out our route so that we would have over an hour and a half worth of reserved fuel when we arrived at San Marcos just in case the weather prevented us from landing and we had to divert to one of our alternates I'm going to add a few voiceovers throughout the video here and there to help explain the complicated procedures that go into shooting this approach and also to help explain some little things along the way this video will be a bit longer than normal due to the amount of content that was captured on this flight and I definitely don't want to leave anything untouched every little thing about this approach helped me learn something about IFR and I definitely hope it helps you learn something by watching this video still flex it's 3/4 mile overcast 300 that's I don't want you okay oh I just man your first one minimum this will be fun it'll be a story to tell for sure yeah they perform a large smiling one one dogs that are clear believe on one 1,000 buses the last report where the tower closes in Austin doesn't 99 1 request yes man just because the tower is closing very shortly and will be arriving shortly thereafter can you call over there and ask them if you have a chance can you call and ask them to leave the runway 1/3 threshold approach lights on high intensity hey Roger there's one last thing for us to worry about okay Raj that and all the lonely lights will be on time we appreciate it say again what is that a service man 901 okay we appreciate that Roger that thank you tonight we were gonna give it a 7 click so with the done anything anyway we've already be along with the shut it off now 3 3 okay Raj that man will probably up the cancel on the ground with you at nine one I want to go over real quick exactly what was just said over the radio right now it's about 6:45 and the tower at San Marcos closes at seven o'clock Brandon wanted a call approached to make sure that the rails or the runway alignment indicator lights were going to be on full intensity so we could see the runway as soon as possible the approach controller then told us that the pilot controlled lighting system was out of service at San Marcos this is a system that I use a lot when the tower is closed it allows the pilots to use their radios to activate the runway lights and either raise or lower the intensity of them given that the pilot controlled lighting system is out of service the controller at Austin informed us that the tower controllers at San Marcos were going to leave all lights on full intensity as we were looking for the runway however we found the information we got from air traffic control to be false the approach lights were in fact not on this made the last few seconds leading up to the landing a bit more intense for us since we were expecting to see the approach lights before anything else and ended up seeing the edge of the runway first I'm sick went off now you're still can't forget those this time yeah don't leave him no I'll look at other stuff so she said join the localizer runway one 3ds I mean we turn this into the runway yeah went wind we get the localizer yes and I if we don't get it this far out which I we may not then it will just use the GPS following it up it's pegged all the way around it is no black make sure you turn for the sensor three serious brands on the ground now van marcos municipal airport automated weather observation zero zero zero one Zulu weather winds zero-niner-zero as for visibility one and one-half sky condition ceiling 300 over ten temperature one-one filthiest 2.10 filthiest altimeter three zero zero seven remark we're good on that right yes approaches zero now neither one has a whether at San Marcos out of 6,000 3080 remember it all goes out no it goes it's not way more you want another way out set up deploy your Radice yes looks good or pressures good but ignore the glideslope for now which is ascending to 3000 and maintain your heading but I got to do help with anything I love an 88 fly hitting a130 ventures for the farmers course definitely no perish in your mixture suffer anyone threes dude I won't do it even on television and also 901 tops where it's about five thousand five hundred five thousand three hundred here I had to call the processor that that was 257 negative M another one officer 5400 year Roger thank you sir but anytime it doesn't feel right or you get disoriented or something let me know okay okay okay speak up I pull a little bit more power out am I'll forget our descent rate American Levin 88 contest first one to five point three to twenty five thirty two American 1188 just nine nine one one five miles from Gary's maintain three thousand twelve 704 first we turn over my one three approaches Marcus therefore yes okay we're Gary's and clear darn Tyreese it cleared our neighbor I les ma'am nine one foot I'll assure y13 program okay quit eyeless one three approaches Saint Marcus will maintain 3000 and topiaries a zero 901 yeah she said I'd have it I was like that okay I want you to focus on that logo as you did a great job at this point we are now established on the localizer for runway 1 3 and we're cleared to descend down to 3,000 feet however we cannot go any lower than 3,000 feet until we are at Gary's which is the final approach fix for this portion of the ILS by the controller telling us that we are cleared for the approach she's saying we're now allowed to fly the approach per the instructions on the published approach plate however we must stay at 3,000 feet until we are established on the localizer and then once we're at Gary's which is the final approach fix we can then intercept the glide slope and follow it down to the runway which is our next step great job if the departure American 1600 out of 2004 4,000 American 16 - no incentive our radar contact TURN RIGHT heading three zero zero climb maintain one to Delfi ride heading three zero zero climb to one to twelve thousand micro fifteen are one thousand we go fast weeks ago now we got time Arius okay good job good job adil overpowered help you want well that just about 55 11 7 that said that be is he like with Mike just Elvis I 55 often approach play norm a 1 7 right South 155 where we went to prior RV arm more than 6000 beautiful those big boys hard to believe with the our quarter-mile news though yeah it's a little discrepancy there but we liked it offers better mile-and-a-half is here we're good we're well above mile and a half now smilin half okay that's the last reporter Saint Marcus by seven know it goes up and down so yeah that's the lot that's all we got to go on first I'll start setting it up at Gary's going to be there good we get a little you know a little to the left so get back to right because yeah as we get closer against Moria more sensitive there well and if you start drifting more than 10 degrees off and you have to lose some of my magic to get it back yeah long as you stay within 10 degrees 5 degrees not a big deal but yeah but just it smells what about last night hey we're set up the Lando's of the flaps but your mixture slowly bring it in Richard Boone and I'll help you there 11 miles from Gary's we're going to maintain 3000 suctions good it oil pressures good aim to go to face just subscibe 55 boys heading the zero-niner-zero vectors for sequencing and a mid-mounted maintain 6,000 sir 9 0 deploy your tower frequency right here ok ok let's better sound patronizing areolas animal ok no bad little power see doesn't say ok everything right a little bit bring it back left about 5 degrees and I will adjust your heading indicator for you ok ok I get it got it if I hear a noise on Houston center one three four point two today thirty four to five degrees right there we go that was a lie good job yeah no you're doing a good job good zero nine nine one or some Sherman change your vitamin C approved you can't on the air with me you're on the ground we're sleeping frequency of one to one point three five okay so we'll have to cancel on the ground with you and change the divisor you keeping the code 901 I'll get this battery Sophia mr. Marcos traffic cessna another one is about six miles to the northwest inbound ILS runway one three so Marcus about five degrees back to right right get that centered up yeah well I see I want you to anticipate the right okay it will it will catch you although five degrees I'm not a hammer knew about little stuff it it's just getting more sensitive right we're cruising now at 3,000 feet and waiting to intersect Gary's which is where we'll intercept the glide slope and follow it all the way down to the runway the initial approach fix is where I'd like to start getting the airplane ready for landing so I'll begin to slow down and start extending the flaps at that time good job five degrees all you need just one is its present give it time to react right right and remember what we briefed back there hitches airspeed powers altitude like usual but just - that power setting you know 1,900 1,800 1,700 whatever it is it'll give you that 3 degree descent rate okay willpower let me keep that nose up depth feedback give me a little more make sure richer of my line I have to go yeah so Marcus traffic says nazar not no one is crossing over Gary's in bed Heil is from a 1 3 . San Marcos 5 degrees over no you're doing okay let's go fast all right hey left marriage more than half a mile you're gonna what a thousand feet one thousand three one thousand okay let's change your configuration but it'll help you just enforce hit that power back into sitting use those flaps if you want to throw full flaps in now 500 feet a minute man no pansy descents here okay okay watch that localizer to like lights will be away beneath a full power full power at slaps each one at flap Sophie to Sam's house thousand you catch it early you have plenty time to recover is not a not a go Miss situation if you keep that to say ray go on 500 minutes good that was I was bringing the lights open out if I will tell you if I see ground you focus on the instruments until I see how I like it okay all right we got it good good good bring that localizer in a little bit a couple degrees left there we go summer gosh I picked says nazar nine one three mile final one three ILS smartest nobody get behind you because you'll fall behind it full start full power now what that nose over what more power boy the nose over what that nose over there both get much more power huh I've got ground contact I've got a teeth keep on the you punish myths were a little bit longer that we get that run away we can't we don't see it here in a second we're gonna have to go fist Burcu time walk you'll try I got it 5040 Luhrmann Wow what that was this as good as I could've done where's traffic's cockade zero no clear Broadway one three send Marcus back later Bishop Orion alright Wow Wow the last few seconds of that approach would have been made a lot easier if the approach lights would have been on like we were told but the important thing is it was a successful landing according to Brandon that was also his lowest IFR approach he's ever done in his career as well of course for the bigger commercial jets this may seem like nothing but for a small general aviation pilots we don't do what these kind of conditions all too often so it's quite an experience when we do you'll never improve yourself and you'll never learn anything if you don't test your limits and explore new challenges but you must do so responsibly I had an experienced instructor sitting by my side talking me through the approach and my hand was ready on the throttle to execute the missed approach at any second but I saw the runway just as we hit minimums I was proud I was able to fly the entire approach on my own without any assistance except for some verbal coaching after flying several hundred hours of nothing but VFR this was a huge accomplishment for me especially for it being my very first instrument approach period as a student pilot or in my case an instrument student pilot you can't be afraid to screw up and make mistakes experience is our greatest teacher but it's up to you to allow it to teach you a lesson every now and then admitting to your own mistakes is the best thing you can do to make yourself a better pilot in the cockpit and a better person out of the cockpit if you like these videos you can click subscribe to be notified whenever a new video is released every monday i'm also hosting a patreon campaign which is a great help when it comes to funding the costs of processing and editing all of this footage that I capture so if you'd like the videos and you'd like to help out and support them you can click on the patreon logo or on the patreon link in the description and even donating one or two dollars per video makes a big difference I appreciate you tuning in to watch this tense instrument approach until next time I wish you weather above minimum and big bright approach lights thank you for watching you
