right over the top of LAX and we're not talking to anybody Alysha was right this does not be illegal I'm like checking my squawk code I'm checking my frequency making sure I'm doing everything right [Music] me [Music] towards tower Skyhawk 8:09 and on our one holding short of runway two-niner right at Juliet looking for a right box climb departure to the LA special flight rules area some things there are an antenna one towards our right box the proof from a tree Nana right there takeoff runway two-niner white clear for takeoff right box 8-0 not knowing I'm in SoCal for a couple of days with November 8 zero Niner Niner one and Alishan I just flew out to Catalina Island and back from Torrance California just south of LA if you haven't seen the two videos covering our flights to and from Catalina Island definitely go check them out the sites were absolutely breathtaking [Music] I've just dropped Alyssa off at the Torrance Airport now I'm gonna go fly VFR up to Van Nuys to see my sister but the problem is that lax is right in the way but luckily there's a procedure for this the LA special flight rules area allows GA aircraft to fly directly over the top of LAX on a specific radial off the Santa Monica vor and the procedure is laid out with requirements on the la terminal area chart we'll need to squawk one two zero one on the transponder to let ATC know that we're executing this procedure then we'll need to intercept the santa monica 1 3 2 degree radial in our case inbound and follow that through the bravo airspace well monitor and make position reports on one to eight decimal five five and will maintain 4,500 feet since we're going northwest aircraft going the other way on this procedure need to be at 3,500 feet other requirements are that you need to be at or below 140 knots indicated air speed and you need to have all of your lights on day or night once clear of the special flight rules area you can squawk VFR and change frequencies at which point I got the ADIS at Van Nuys and called tower when I was past Santa Monica this whole procedure is subject to change so it's required that you have a current tach or terminal area chart with you in the airplane I was planning to buy one at the FBO but Alysha ended up giving me hers this is a really easy procedure but I won't lie I was nervous about it going over the top of a major Bravo Airport in the bravo airspace while effectively squawking VFR and not talking to an air traffic controller felt very illegal but it's all part of the procedure I ended up doing this procedure three times while I was in SoCal but this is the only time that I rolled cameras and the lighting and the weather couldn't have been more perfect some things there an antenna one towards our right boxes of proof from my
