and welcome to today's live IELTS class my name is Adrian and I'm streaming to you live from Budapest here in Central Europe I hope everybody has had a great week and is looking forward to a fantastic weekend in this class we are looking at a task 1 essay for the academic IELTS and we will focus on a flowchart example I will explain how to master the content and structure so you can get a band 9 we'll have a task to where we will be finishing the essay so students let's get into today's lesson here we go interestingly still no members I wonder if YouTube's having a bit of a hiccup there let me just see it's unusual not to have members in already okay so just give me two seconds here and see if we can coax them into it hi members alright let's see I can't see members in the chat so if you're here just give me two seconds I'm gonna try to see what's going on with the YouTube interface and alright well here we go so we'll get into the task one either way let's do this together so first things first when you get to the writing section of your IELTS exam you want to start with task 1 don't start with task to task one is worth one third of your mark so it's better to start with that one warm-up get your writing fluency going and task one should be a little bit easier than task 2 because you don't have to think as much the information is there in front of you hi Elena there's a member interesting members are a little bit late joining in today alright so let's look at this task 1 IELTS task 1 writing you should spend about 20 minutes on this task don't spend more time because if you spend more time you're taking time away from your task - okay I'd rather you go here we go so the following chart shows the steps in a company's online web portal to upgrade their account this describe the main features and make comparisons were relevant let me clear this up a little bit so the following chart shows the steps in a company's online web portal for users to update their account and describe the main features and make comparisons were irrelevant so it's not a bad idea to read the question twice just to make sure it's clear as well and then you have to write at least 150 words that's the absolute minimum to get your score completion mark okay so make sure to write at least 150 words high-band essay students or closer to 200 words okay so let's look at this flow chart now in the IELTS a lot of students are familiar with in the academic with line graphs bar charts pie charts math type questions other kinds of diagrams and oftentimes students forget to you look at flowcharts but in fact the IELTS the academic IELTS can present you with a flowchart there have been a number of exams in the past where task one was a flowchart type question similar to this one so I highly highly recommend academic out students to practice at least one or two flowchart type questions as well okay yeah Rodrigo that's why so I see a couple of years surprised that Elena says oh it's a flowchart and Rodrigo says that's the first time I see a flowchart it is and again I decided to do this class because I don't want you to be surprised or shocked if you're sitting for your IELTS exam and for your task one you get a flowchart okay so here it is alright so we read the title of the chart account update login at Stanton Holdings so that's the name of the company and then here we have the steps for a user to update their login information so there's the login page login attempt data processed is the user valid know the user gets a notice takes them back to the login page or yes and then there's passwords valid and so on so we're looking at this we see it all right we don't need to get too into it just yet what we want to do is write the overview so let's do that for the overview you should paraphrase the question and then of course add more details and describe the main feature right most of you know this now so overview its paraphrase the question with details plus the main features okay so members please do that now so here's the question again the following chart show the steps in a company's online web portal for users to update their account describe the main features and make comparisons were relevant please paraphrase this I'll show you what the flow chart looks like again so here is the flow chart go ahead and start writing your sentences I'll give you a few seconds head start and then I'm going to do the same nice to see more members in the class now that's fantastic alright so again you want to kind of look at the number of steps that are involved so we have 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 different stages there's 12 of them to this process it is a process si certainly in this case and I will begin writing as well so there's my first sentence let's see what you come up with notice the correction that I made with that missing subject okay or object the flow chart shows the 12 possible steps taken by a user at Stanton Holdings website when updating their user account and because it's a website it's on the website not at the website and it would be at the physical location so again review and always correct catch your mistakes just like what I'm doing alright Preeti says sir there's no time scale given in this flow chart okay yeah absolutely Preeti you can write in present tense this is generally true for this website so it's not locked to a specific time so definitely use present tense good observation Preeti yeah notice how I'm also using present tense Preeti Elena says the given flow chart shows the account features of staunton Holdings company which involves twelve different steps yes Elena that's okay but remember what's happening here is this is showing the steps to update the user account okay so it's a web portal for users to update their account all right that's the goal of this web portal so make sure you include that Elena that's important alright and ladies gents flow chart we usually write it with a hyphen because flow chart becomes one concept so flow - chart okay Rodrigo says the flow chart presents the 12 basic stages for logging in to an account and to its update okay Rodrigo a little bit of grammar let's have a look at that again so the flow chart presents the 12 basic steps for logging in and updating a user's account on stanton Holdings website okay Rodrigo just like with me you made the same mistake I did the same so I won't blame you for it but you have to remember that this is a website because Stanton Holdings is probably also a physical office so we need to make clear for a reader that it's about a website that we're dealing with here not their physical office because you might have a user account at the physical office of Stanton Holdings as well so clarity is very important and that's why details are important right if we gave what you wrote Rodrigue or what I wrote initially to another person they wouldn't know if we're talking about a website or a physical venue so careful with that okay all right so now what is the main feature okay so what do we notice first let me know milena Rodrigo you already have your first sentence so what is the main feature what do we notice in this case so what's the most observable part of this flowchart okay what is the most observable tell me that all right meanwhile I'll take a look at a couple more of the first sentences Preity yogi says the flow chart illustrates the various stages for users to update their profile at Stanton Holdings website or constantan Holdings website okay and Preity you can be more specific so state 12 if you see that it's 12 12 stages okay Abhishek says the flow chart illustrates the 12 basic steps for updating the online account login at stanton it's not Stanford Stanton Holdings yeah when you're copying the names into your essay make sure that you're accurate so Stanford and Stanton would be two different names they're so careful your examiner's the markers will catch even these small mistakes so if you don't write the name correctly they will catch that okay all right Rodrigo absolutely like a process diagram a flowchart is a type of process diagram okay yeah so absolutely Rodrigo the most observable features what are they okay so what do you notice what do you notice Elena if you look at this Preeti Abhishek what do you notice what's the most observable feature keep it simple okay think about it like if you're speaking to an alien or if you're speaking to a person who has no idea about computers all right so I'll start writing here let's see if you come up with the same concept or main feature as me okay so initially it is evident that a user can end up with various results in this process depending on the information that they provide okay just that that's all you have to write okay don't get lost in the details so Preeti looking at the login page it's not so important user validation I'll be check it's just a part of it right the most observable feature if we look at this graph is that you have different end points so the user can end up back at the login page or they may pass this stage and they might go to a landing page or they might pass that stage and go to a rejection page okay or they might get a password notice and go back to the login page the idea is that the user in this page can end up here can end up here can end up here or back here again right because we have the arrows coming this way so there's basically four different end points for the user depending on what they put in so the most observable feature is that users can end up in a variety of different places on the website depending on the information that they input for me that's the most observable feature okay but I think that's the one your examiner's will like to see in the essay as well so Elena you're close so there's a decision-making process in this flowchart is absolutely right and that decision-making process leads users to different end points okay so that's what I would write for the overview so this is my overview now let me read it for you together so you can see that it makes sense the flow chart shows the 12 possible steps taken by a user on stanton holdings website when updating their user account initially it is evident that a user can end up with various results in this process depending on the information that they provide okay so that's what it is yeah and there's different shaped boxes Alayna four different elements in the process I agree with you absolutely I think that's maybe more for the analysis okay so with this type of flow chart and here I'm going to take the overview and I'm going to stick it underneath our flow chart so that now we can get into the analysis the analyses should be 8 to 12 sentences depending on your fluency okay and with a flow chart the good news is that these can be fairly easy to analyze so that doesn't take much time because really what you need to do is start with the starting point the starting point is obviously the login page okay from the login page you need to watch the direction of the arrows so here it's a login attempt so obviously this is the first step here and then the data is processed and the user is validated or not so this is where the first step stops and then the first step can either go there or there so the user is valid no the user is valid yes so this is where our second stage of the process starts okay and then again here the process may continue in this direction if the password is not valid if the password is valid then it moves in this direction okay now here if the password is not valid again you may move in this direction if there are less than three attempts okay and if there are more than three attempts then it will go in this direction here so this would be my number this is number three here just going back a bit this would be my number four and then this would be my number five and then this would be my number six okay so this is the nice part of flowcharts that the actual analysis component is not too difficult you just have to carefully follow the arrows okay all right meanwhile I see that Ruslan and Rodrigo have a little bit for the main feature so Ruslan says overall it can be seen that the user could be redirected to certain page depending on the type of information that he or she provides not provided with but provides ruslan be very careful because what you wrote there's they're being provided but it's the opposite they provide the information right like their password username okay Rodrigo says that first I shot it is noticeable that users can get some different pathways until they reach their main goal for updating their account using his is okay Rodrigo if we don't know if it's a he or she we will often use their their denotes both he and she okay so you can use their th e IR alright students you're looking good I think you have the two three four five six but really it's up to you how many sentences you break this into of course it depends on your connections so what kind of connecting words you're using and the grammar that you're using okay so first let's write our analysis for this part of the process where the user comes in to the landing page they attempt to log in the data is processed and then the user is either validated or not okay so let's take this process first let me use a different color here so let's take this part of this flow chart first okay and again you don't have to write this in one sentence you might use two maybe even three sentences what's most important is that it's clear okay Elena I see that you've included your main feature sentence it is obvious that a user can have different paths from start position to end position depending upon the information entered okay not flowlines Elena don't refer to the actual process diagram but refer to what is being done right abhishek not by the deep analysis okay we don't use that in english so upon deeper analysis okay I'll be shek please express that sentence in this way otherwise you'll lose marks because it's unnatural so like this I'll be check upon deeper analysis okay so write it like this let me erase my scribble so you can see this a little bit clearer okay so I'll be check start like this upon deeper analysis that's the more natural way to express what you're doing there right so upon deeper analysis a user enters stanton holdings site at a landing page okay so far I'm here and they attempt to login okay so Rodrigo notice how instead of using he or she I just used the word they okay sometimes it's okay to write he/she maybe once but you don't want to repeatedly write he she okay to denote either gender we usually use the plural they or their okay alright so upon deeper analysis a user enters Stanton Holdings site at a landing page and they attempt to login all right now the data is processed and the user is either validated or not okay all right which means their username probably right them to log in with their credentials if they are a valid user then they are prompted for their password if not then they are redirected back to the landing page okay so so far I have that first step or that first flow of this flowchart the login page data processing to the user valid or not valid coming back or going forward to the password entry okay so that's what I have so far and notice how I didn't stress about it I used three different sentences upon deeper analysis a user enters Stanton Holdings site at a landing page and they attempt to login with their credentials if they are a valid user then they are prompted for their password if not then they are redirected back to the login landing page three sentences it makes sense it's clear for your reader okay let's see what you have all right Abhishek says with deeper analysis the person starts from the login page and inputs information whereby the data will be processed and the user is validated notice the big difference I'll be shocked between what I said and what you wrote you're using the future participle will so you write the person will start the person will be valid don't do that okay Preeti made a very good point that there's no time here this is just the general process so don't use past or future in this case students stick to the present okay because this is the general procedure for the website this flowchart all right Elena says at the beginning the user attempts to log in and after the data the program makes the decision about the validity of the user a valid user can move further however an invalid user is redirected to the main page alena a very good thumbs up you've wrote it very differently from me but it works really well it's clear a couple of slight Corrections there with the grammar but overall very goodly and a nice nice work okay Rodrigo says firstly the user accesses the login page and tries to log into the website whereby their data is processed students the word data is plural okay so here's a quick tip most even many native speakers don't know this but the word data is plural data is plural okay singular if I remember my statistics class accurately is data okay so a lot of people don't know this because it's understandable we almost never ever use the single form of data because data is 99.999% of the time plural okay so we use the plural form so often that we forget that it's the actual plural form and the singular form is datum okay so kind of interesting a little bit of a side note I see that Elena was clear there as well we very very rarely use the word datum okay all right so now we want to explain what's going on in this function here with this yellow diamond shaped part of the flowchart where the password is being validated so here the user is being validated meaning probably the username and here their password is being validated and of course two different results can occur one is if their password is not valid or incorrect and of course the other is their password is correct then they go in this direction so describe this for me password is valid the account is updated and the user logs in the password is not valid and they go to this step here where the password can be tried three different times okay so give me a nice sentence for that one yeah I'm very impressed Alina that you knew the singular for data not many people know it even native speakers often will not know that little interesting fact so now let's do this now this next step okay mmm provided that they enter the correct password the user is then authenticated their account is updated and they get redirected to another landing page okay so here I'm describing this process here now notice that here you have the word yes okay so password is valid yes the way that I express password is valid yes is the user is authenticated okay authentic can be used as a verb as well so authenticated notice something interesting here students that a couple of parts of English that are very useful for this type of flow chart are conditionals provided that if not if yes if they so this is where you want to use a wide range of conditionals real unreal okay and this is where you can use a lot of correlative conjunctions like either or neither nor whether or these become very very useful for this type of chart okay so I'm gonna give you a little bit of a note on that while our students come up with some of their own sentences so for flow chart or process types of diagrams two very useful pieces of English are one using a variety of real and unreal conditionals like if in order to provided that when given that so these are just to name a few and then of course your correlative conjunctions okay and using correlative conjunctions okay so your correlative conjunctions here are either or are very useful whether or is very useful both and not only but also okay and both and okay we've got those either/or whether or neither nor there's a useful one as well so keep these in mind as soon as you see that your task one question is a flowchart or a process diagram immediately you should go aha oh yeah conditionals and correlative conjunctions these will help my essay these will help my band score okay all right let's jump back to the diagram so we can observe it while I see how you described it Elena says in the next stage for the valid user the program prompts for a password and if the user enters the correct password the user is then redirect redirected to another web page and his or her account is updated okay good Elena I made some Corrections there again go back and listen to how I corrected what you wrote but very very close Elena Elena continues with conversely invalid attempts end up with an invalid password notification yes okay it's true abhishek says the user inputs the password in the box where the system is authenticated I check please stop using the word will okay Abhishek promise me that you're going to try and stop yourself from using the word will okay we do that in natural language I'll be checked but it's actually not good communication because it sounds like we're always talking about the future and we're never talking about the present okay it's a big mistake students in task 1 and task 2 to use the word will the future participle will over and over okay in correct communication we really only need to use the future participle will when we are actually discussing the future and only the future okay like tomorrow I will go to the store because today I won't okay so that's the only time so careful with that you will lose marks especially in your academic essays professors really don't like to see the word will in their essays in university okay all right Preeti says in the second stage if password is validated the user can update their account but if the password is not validated the user gets three attempts to enter the right password very nice Preeti I like it okay so that's the next stage here with the three attempts so I'm going to describe this stage here with the three attempts and then we'll we'll compare okay so with the three attempts if it's less than three attempts there's a password notice and the user has brought back to the login page if there are more than three password attempts and it's not correct then the account is locked and the user is presented with a rejection page okay so here we go let's see how you do for those all right so when I'm going to use a real conditional here when the user fails to input the correct password they may either be their account may either be locked right so they may either be locked out of the system and presented with a rejection page okay so when the user fails to input the correct password they may either be locked out of the system and presented with a rejection page if they've they have done so more than three times or in case they do it less than three times they are provided with a password notice and directed back to the original login page all right let me make sure that makes sense always review moving into that next stage Rodrigo says secondly users have their password checked which if it is wrong they can type in again up to three times if the password remains wrong after all attempts they receive a notice and must restart again from the beginning if the password is correct they are able to update their account as they reach the landing page I don't think that's what's happening here Rodrigo so I don't think they actually reach the landing page in this case so this is saying that if the password is incorrect greater than three times then their account is locked and they get a rejection page if their password if they don't enter it three times incorrectly they can get a password notice I think that's something this is just my guess but I think that's something like change password or get password sent to my email account or address and then in that case they're taken back to the original login page so that they start the login process again I think that's what's happening here yeah Rodrigo definitely you want to review that and adjust it okay Preeti says in the next stage of the process if the user fails to enter the accurate password and less than three attempts either their account is locked or they're redirected to the login page Preeti it's not they're not redirected if it's if it's so if it's less than three attempts Preeti their account is not locked they're redirected if they enter the password three times incorrectly or more then it's locked so careful with this stage students this is probably the trickiest one to describe here okay all right so I've completed all of the steps it looks like now I can do a little bit of a summary all right so let me do this summary here what do I learn from this flow chart that's what decides the summary okay and yes students it is a good idea to do a summary even with an overview I've noticed a lot of students online chatting about the fact that if you have a good overview you don't need a summary but a summary is not a bad idea okay a good expository essay usually have as an introduction body and a summary ok introduction here is the overview so what do I notice here I noticed that in summary this flow chart outlines the key elements of updating a user's account at Stanton's Stanton Holdings by considering the user name or user ID ID and password as well as the way the password or the number of times the password is entered incorrectly okay so let me make sure that makes sense in summary this flowchart outlines the key elements of updating a user's account at Stanton's holdings
