[Music] hello welcome back to city planner plays where we are taking the city of starterville and increasing its population from fifty thousand to seventy five thousand and this is part two of the video in that series so if you haven't seen the previous video click on the link at the top of this video if you have here is the second part of the video without any further ado let's get started so i do want to start thinking about some of those other special buildings and you might have noticed that i didn't really plan around these and that was very purposeful one of the things i was thinking about is i want to disrupt the grid after it's been built with these buildings because i do think that that can in some cases make it seem a little bit more natural i do want to look at the land uses around it though and i think that right here might be kind of an interesting spot for some of these facilities so we're going to break the grid there and replace some of these buildings so the science center so the one issue that i'm going to see is that [Music] i want to be able to have a road right here that connects in and that's going to be a challenge because of the the way that the science center is set up so what i might end up doing is actually having this road turn here maybe i'll just make some connections here like that so there's not really a great way to do this i i had some other ideas i thought you know maybe i could get a rodent along the side here nothing's quite working how i expected but that's part of why i wanted to to place the building here i think it makes a more interesting pattern breaks up this the monotony of a a really strict grid and gives you some really unique street patterns and i think that's the kind of thing you would see over time in a city as things are infilled and redevelopment occurs i might go ahead and add the museum of modern art here as well interestingly that road that i just took all that time to make plans for didn't need to do that because the museum of modern art fits really nice right there and i'm just tormenting these people letting them build their buildings and then immediately tearing them down but there's a lesson there and that is maybe you shouldn't uh get to get ahead of yourselves and build your building so quickly okay so yeah i really think that this is a unique block pattern and i like it a lot the thing i don't like is all these small buildings are kind of springing up and i know that we could get some larger buildings if we demolish some of those that's why you'll sometimes see me go through and demolish these buildings is if they uh spring up before if they spring up too early you won't get maximum density and i want to get that maximum density so i do think i'm going to place a couple of trees throughout here it's never bad to just kind of go through and place a couple so i mentioned that i thought that this might be a problem and look it certainly is so i think i'm going to need to eliminate that junction right there i'd rather have people making a turn into a place where uh you don't have to make another turn right away it'll prevent some of that traffic from occurring this right here is another problematic area you can see that people are using this road as kind of a bypass and it's causing all sorts of issues so we might need to do something about that in the future that would be something that you know in a city in reality there's never an opportunity to fix it short of you know adding one ways or some kind of hokey treatments to make this work because this is very messy very very messy the other thing is we may have wanted to put another north-south collector through here we do not have that so all of the traffic is funneling this way as i look thinking of adding one more this is where it would be really nice to have mods where rather than demolishing a bunch of streets to make this collector work and you know it's it's it's going to be a real challenge i could go through and instead of doing that i could you know just have a collector by removing parking which would be a much better solution for us but we don't have that option right now so we're going to go with this so land value is what's going to prevent this area from leveling up to where to its densest levels and that's going to be like that in all of our residential areas so that's something i want to be thinking about a little bit because if i can get those land values up by adding parks by making sure that all of the neighborhood amenities are within close distance we're going to see these neighborhoods get even denser our population will grow and we'll be in a in a great spot so i'm going to look for our elementary or actually our high school rather because i want to put you see okay so i want to put this tennis court right next to the high school take down a skyscraper sorry basketball court uh so we took down a skyscraper just to get this in there good trade out for the city so we're still seeing that there's not enough fish okay it's going oh it's going back and forth and we don't have water all right so that's going to be a inhibitor of growth so there's not a lot of issues over here with pollution so i think i might just bring the water over here maybe make it a unique feature of this area and our sewage treatment is also an issue now so this is where i really regret not leaving myself the space so we are going to do something a little unrealistic but in my mind very logical and that is we're going to extend the banks here we're going to bring that road up and wrap our public works campus around so that we can have another row of water treatment facilities again we're going to go with the advanced inland eco and we are not going to give ourselves enough space apparently shoot all right we gotta go a little bit further [Music] and we're out of soil so i said i like to keep an eye on the soil and this is precisely why now that i've run out of soil i have to steal it from elsewhere to make this happen and even that i took quite a bit of soil it's not enough to make this it's not enough to give us what we need so generally i think you would likely want to take this soil from as close to the source as you could so i'm going to take it from across the street and move it over here now this is an oversimplification of this process the soils would change over and over and over and over in these areas so something to be aware of uh it doesn't impact you in the game obviously so it doesn't really matter but uh in reality you might not have the right kind of soil there and that would certainly have an impact on your ability to to scrape soil from across the street now i i've got an extra path through here or one tile length i think i might just add a path so i spoke too soon let the cat out of the bag okay so this is gonna be really good because now we have room to grow in the future okay so we're gonna leave that for now still having death care problems see how we have you know almost 300 deceased individuals in the city and it seems like we're just kind of hanging around there so i'm going to continue to blanket the city in death care i do see that there are some holes in our coverage and i don't want to take out a bunch of buildings if at all possible i might take a couple crematorium with a phenomenal view you see that the coverage right in this area isn't great we're gonna say that they reused a home we kind of lucked out there was a a parcel over here that was empty so we use that as the place for our crematorium so this is going to help out a lot too obviously the city's not going to grow all that well if you have dead people everywhere so let's let's let this go for a second and see if our situation improves okay it's slowly improving i think traffic has something to do with this as well and you can see that the main drag at this point is getting slammed so we are going to likely need to to do something about all this traffic because it's getting intense now some of this is our transit routes are overloaded so there are people that are spawning most likely in this in this area let's take a look at our policies and see if there's anything that might be encouraging this oh metropolis 65 000. so now we get an airport so that's neat we're going to keep this thing moving so i want to encourage public transportation and try to figure out these transit lines so i uh to just entire citywide we will have free public transit now we don't really have a great amount of bus service and i'm aware of that we'll need to do more about this but i think we're going to wait until the next episode to do that that said let's look at our existing routes and see what's going on and you see that they're just all overloaded so we're going to throw some buses at this these are very long routes so i think having more buses and fewer is probably for the best especially we've we're at a deficit right now i want to keep an eye on this we're going to come back to this once we see some of these stops um having fewer issues but for the time being it looks like at all of our lines we're overloaded somewhere so we're going to kind of have to play catch-up and you know in a real bus system you would you would throw extra buses or something of that nature at these sorts of issues now look at this route there are way too many buses although they're all full because of this one stop interesting so we have all these empty buses they make it over here to the mall they just load up with people so that what that's telling me is we need a higher capacity form of transit over here um because this is an express route and we shouldn't have 13 full buses an hour going on our express express service but for the time being it's at least functioning the other services are not doing quite so well okay so back to our death care we're improving we had 300 deceased people now we have less than 200 so that's a significant improvement in my mind and our land values much better we have some issues near the highway not surprising we are going to put up a sound wall and a landscape buffer i think because of the distance here some more extreme treatments would be needed i also do think i'm going to prep that bridge now the likelihood of this happening where a bridge is prepped in advance very very low bridges are very expensive so it's certainly not the sort of thing that you would uh expect to see but the same thing with this arterial but i'm gonna do it anyway anything i can do to relieve traffic at this point and this is going to be useful in the future anyway so not overly concerned at this point in time so we're having a lot of problems with this collector i do want to look at our junctions aha some are broken so it would be great if this were a roundabout i think that would solve a lot of the problems here it's really the the problem is there's a bottleneck we're funneling everything onto this road there's no other cross streets at all so any cross street here would be helpful even if it were crossing this rail line i'm curious i make a local connection through here how much traffic it will take away taking out some buildings by some i mean tons and let's take a look at what is happening on this route holy cow that is way more trips than i was expecting that is not gonna work yeah that's well maybe it will that is a lot of trips it's mostly private vehicles so if we just get rid of pedestrians wow yeah that's that's a problem [Laughter] that is a big problem or i should say this has the potential to become a big problem right now it's just in theory a problem but it looks like it's functioning so i might just might just try to relax on it maybe it's not that big of a deal but it certainly seems like it will become a big deal okay well that is one of those issues we just need to keep an eye on i think i'm gonna make another local connection over here and see if that also helps i would greatly prefer to have these be grades separated but hopefully it doesn't impact things all that much and hopefully having this cross-connectivity will just relieve some of this pressure that we're seeing because it's it's it's pretty intense right now the pressure that we're seeing [Music] so i'm just making a few more targeted connections so this is a really well connected area now it wasn't before i know it's coming at the expense of this rail line but you know think of it this way this is a dense urban area and at this point in time or but prior to doing this we had uh all of our access cut for vehicles and peds because of the rail line that's also not a good solution so i guess we kind of gotta choose our battles okay so i think i have a city-wide height restriction which is going to prevent me from leveling up in this area and that is not at all what i want so i i'm gonna add another district over here make sure that i don't have a height restriction more square okay so land value i just want kind of curious how's the land value in comparison to our other districts it's lower but i think i have a way to juice it i want high-tech housing and we'll get rid of that high-rise ban we're gonna watch this place go nuts all right we need water over to our new row of commercial and uh office buildings over here so i think this is a nice buffer and a nice transition between the industrial uses and whatever else we do here in the future so that's why i decided to put these here and it kind of extends this corridor of offices and commercial uses makes a lot of sense along the collector too you'd expect to see those sorts of uses there and uh they would thrive based on the traffic that they would see that's why they like to be on those sorts of roads okay so we're seeing some decent growth now and you see our population is just booming so i'm hoping that the height restriction means that we get to our next population milestone i think we're going to hit it relatively soon death care check-in not much better a little bit garbage issues now which is frustrating because we have we've even included a garbage processing or a waste transfer facility over here wondering if because of some things happening over here that we're having problems add one more facility see we have some burned down buildings over here let's take care of those yeah wow now we are just loading up with garbage and that's frustrating because we i don't think that we have a traffic problem over here at all we don't and you'd figure with the location of this facility i mean that's not anywhere near at capacity let's see how our transfer building is doing forty percent full three out of twenty garbage trucks in use that's bizarre well i'm not gonna try to remedy this it should fix itself maybe these trucks i'm curious if they were going a long ways away yeah they were wow yeah that that was the problem it was going all over the city so we got one here one here i might add one more this is not the kind of use that you want to take a bunch of buildings for truthfully i am going to take some industrial buildings if you're going to if there's any kind of building that you're going to be able to demolish for a waste transfer facility it's going to be an industrial building traffic is is really bouncing around a lot now now i like to use 80 as my i guess my guide for traffic being in an okay spot we are beyond that right now so i do think we are going to want to take a look at that in our next build a lot of people are moving into the city right now though so i do think that that is part of the issue and of course most of those people are probably going to come from this area right here i do have some weird stuff happening with this junction too really don't like it there's not a heck of a lot i can do about it i'll try to make that smaller because we don't really have many options with our highway in vanilla unfortunately okay so we are approximately 4 000 people away from meeting our threshold we're starting to see some troubling buildings not enough educated some troubling signs not enough educated workers is a problem we have a breakdown somewhere in our education system and it looks like it's our high schools which is unfortunate so let's take a look at our coverage so it's this neighborhood i think so there's two areas one over here and another over here the neighborhood i said that would be upset that they didn't have adequate high school coverage well they're gonna get their way now they're gonna get their high school because i think that we are in a tough spot with our high school coverage and this area is not covered the other location is over here near these windmills now i do believe that a school district could do what it takes to get a school built generally though they're pretty savvy about their needs and they will purchase land so far in advance in anticipation of a school's growth cities states uh they have population projections available in the school districts take those and use those so uh cities do as well so they have an idea of what they're gonna need in terms of waste water complexes and water pipes and pumps and different things those these things don't happen by accident they happen because communities are looking at projections and planning accordingly so with our death problem i'm wondering if having these on is an issue so it really bugs me to have them full it's the thing i don't like about cemeteries i might empty them i didn't like turning them off makes everyone sad ugh it's kind of a messy situation okay so our we've got plenty of capacity in elementary schools high school is looking good university is fine even though over here people aren't happy a lot of that has to do with the high schools being overcrowded great elementary coverage [Music] might have one more elementary school over here so even though our coverage was good there are certain spots and so even though our i should say our availability was good our coverage isn't great in a few areas you see it here as well that we don't have great elementary coverage even though we have plenty of availability this is another cemetery that is going to be full soon so anytime we start seeing any indicators like this we just want to start planning for it as soon as we can so that is why i took that so seriously because i know that that's going to become an issue that we'll see all over the city certainly do not want that same thing with garbage if you take care of those things right away they aren't issues anymore so another one i see so this is a zoning problem um so let's take a look at our zoning we have residential in between right next to this busy commercial corridor this probably should be office that would probably resolve this issue i think i might make that change the shame of the game is you know in reality you'd make that change in your long range plan and over time those buildings would reuse you'd say that certain new users couldn't go in there and things would get better over time in this game we sent a flood of people onto the streets and the skyscrapers are demolished [Laughter] what are you gonna do so that should help yeah look at that right away fixed much much much better so you might have noticed that i'm a little reluctant to continue expanding i i know that we need more commercial and uh industrial or that's what it's saying anyway i know that we have some residential that's continuing to densify so i might take a beat and just let things catch up to uh to our population threshold because i think we're going to be there any minute now [Music] okay and our growth is starting to plateau which tells me we need to do some more development and respond to the needs that the city is begging for so we're going to do a little bit of that so i think we're going to do is extend across this collector and make some of those key connections that you know i think would be very [Music] beneficial okay so what i've done here is try to plan my step down and zoning and uh density so the way that i'm doing that is and i want to flank that that collector road with some higher density uses i've added a ton more access this is a collector after all not an arterial and i think i've done a bit too much access management through here truthfully i'm i'm really regretting what i've done here i might call a quick ball again and eliminate this road here because i think it's actually causing many more problems than it's worth now in reality what i probably would do is suggest a wide sidewalk there what the game is going to suggest is that all of those skyscrapers disappear so so we work with what it gives us which is missing skyscrapers because we decided to remove some right of way that was unnecessary you might be thinking to yourself this pedestrian facility is totally useless you're gonna have to really work hard to convince me that any pedestrian facility isn't valuable i think if you have excess space to add a pedestrian facility it's probably in your best interest to do so you know in real cities any opportunity to walk that you can give is a good one even if it's not going to be a you know continuous route up front it's still not bad to have and i think it works the same in the game the thing i don't love is that i people can't cross the road there see if we can fix that not easily and it's probably not worth trying to fix it the way that we could is we could add a road right here upgrade this one remove this road and then put our trail back that is a way and i will take it i probably shouldn't have done that probably wasn't worth the effort but now we do have a crossing right here mid block no it's probably worth it although i see a lot of elderly people being hit by cars so that is problematic oh yeah not good so just this little district right here brought us back where we should be in terms of growth and just for for continuity sake i think i'm gonna extend this up all the way to the highway so similar to what i did on the other side of the highway i kind of want to mirror this side of the road or side of the highway road it is just like the other one a bit of a challenge but it is certainly not impossible with the free form tool and a bit of patience although my patience is running low now so i might just stop right there i really just wanted to be able to make this connection into this neighborhood and then i'll continue that pattern that i've established already the nice thing about this area is it should be fairly simple to serve with utilities okay much much much better man we are making some crazy money it's one of the nice things about vanilla is it's it's very simple to make money just zone things appropriately don't over build you'll make money you'll do just fine i'm just going through here and removing the traffic signals that show up on all the local roads because they're just not needed i think we're in a good spot now right here now that that's a collector we probably should have a signalized intersection there let's see how our traffic's doing 80. that's that's what i said my threshold was 80 81 79 80 okay we're bouncing around so that makes me wonder about the transit while we're okay and our trips have gone through the roof on our bus line see how we're doing way too many vehicles but we are clearing some of these stops which should allow us to improve things in the future now this stop in front of the train station is a disaster we've got a lot going on there i'm also a little curious i didn't provide a path back here which is a bit of a problem so you can load from either side of the train station so having a path here would be valuable i think that was the wrong spot it's not quite doing what i was hoping it would give it one more shot there we go nice connection made all the way to the train station we'll see if we can get one here as well same thing i think people will take this [Music] and i might be wrong it looks like that's not exactly working how i thought it would that's that's okay i'm also wondering if some of these vehicle or some of these these folks here would have taken the metro uh if bus service wasn't here all these buses are full as they get there that's unfortunate okay so we now have our residential demand rebounding i think we're gonna have a couple urban blocks over here before we break down into this madness so uh when i'm doing that when i'm when i'm starting with a grid and then breaking it down what i'm imagining is the concept of the of the the transect and i'm going to get into this probably in a verde beach episode soon uh if not on a standalone episode so the transect is a way of looking at the built environment and the natural environment together and thinking about how we go from one density to the next and it's a really useful way of thinking about the world because it doesn't just account for the urban environment it also accounts for the rural environment and how we transition from one to the other and it really classifies districts in a way that i think is useful that really classifies but helps helps to understand that maybe that's the better way of putting it [Music] oh this is ugly i do not like it we're going to make this connection work and you see that these blocks are starting to grow in length that is not desirable at all this is probably the last block of the grid that we're going to have [Music] let's look at our junctions make sure that we are all set up here again i probably should be using that priority uh but i find that sometimes using priority gets me into more trouble than it's worth so at this point in time i figure i'll just skip it it's a clicker two extra not the end of the world okay so we are gonna need some more schools over here so i'm gonna add two this is gonna be residential predominantly i am going to flank these collectors with some commercial uses i also want to think about the high schools you see that there's kind of hole over here so we'll meet that need and our university capacity is not great but i think i want to spread this out a little bit more because this whole area is kind of a university black hole so if we're going to add a university i'd rather have it over here i do think we need one now we at least have a little bit more separation [Music] i do think we could use a public library in this part of town we don't have one so i want this to be close to a school so that the students could at least utilize it the nice thing about this little campus is that we can have a small park it's a little too big that's unfortunate i uh just a little bit too big i do want to start planning some parks in this part of town we have the space and availability and the grid kind of breaks down a little bit now so why not include some of those in this area too we don't have that cross connectivity that the part could provide that so might as well add that here you notice not enough educated workers it's going to take some time for the students to make their way through the pipeline the education pipeline but it'll happen so our we don't really have health care over here so we'll add a clinic as well keep that close to that collector road fire coverage looks okay better than over here which keeps burning down so let's put a small uh firehouse over here police coverage so our police coverage is more or less okay well no it's not it's it's lacking over here we're going to take down some industrial buildings cheapest land easiest to place it put that over here and we'll increase our jail capacity because that was really the big issue over here we're okay so we will leave that for now we're gonna need to blank this entire area with transit it's really unfortunate that we don't have that here just yet but for the time being i think it's kind of what we need to do more commercial uses along the uh along the highway and then we're just going to a gigantic swath of residential and i think this is going to do a lot to get our population to our next milestone [Music] so we are stagnating a bit and a lot of that has to do with industrial demand we're trying to meet it with offices you know it's it's helping but i don't really have a lot of suitable land for offices right now unfortunately that's kind of the issue i'm running into i do have a bit of suitable land for uh for industrial i might just zone it so we'll do some smaller blocks over here extend this district over hopefully this area is already well blanketed by yeah we don't need to extend the utilities as long as we stay in the left-hand side of this road so i think we're going to do that we'll just keep it there yeah that should be fine and we are seeing some traffic challenges in this area which is unfortunate but not unexpected one of the issues that we have is we we really have one arterial and one collector making its way through here if you look over here we had two collectors one arterial two collectors one arterial if you look at our traffic you know there is some pressure over here you get over here where we drop a collector and it just goes crazy so we do need to add a collector somewhere in this area and it would be really nice if we could figure out a way to connect it up over here not a lot of great options in my mind but this might be one so what i'm going to do is have this collector come up we're going to sweep across same thing over here make our connection and make what could be a mega mistake and that is uh upgrading this road to a collector oh shoot because that's a waste transfer facility it's actually acting as a landfill meaning we have to wait for this to empty before we can move it you do see that there are already vehicles taking this road and that's a little bit of pressure taken off from the other roads in this area so i think that's important unfortunate that uh oh zero percent full already all right great that was fast we'll stop emptying that and we'll upgrade our road all right that is a good improvement now interestingly our population is just totally stagnant commercial is one of the reasons for that and i know that we're going to zone more commercial up this collector so i might just build out a few of these blocks so i kind of already have the pattern established that i'm going to use in this area so no problems with me just extending that pattern a little bit i wanted to make sure that i get these roads in here so that i don't end up needing to demolish a whole bunch of buildings in the future but we need to get this uh this this commercial need resolved otherwise we're going to stop growing which is kind of where we're at right now and we're so close to our threshold and i refuse to let this episode end until we get there i might slow down the thresholds from here on out make them maybe 15 000 so that we can bring in the length of these videos because this one is getting long and i acknowledge that understand i'm also not willing to deviate so i'm sorry if uh if that's disappointing [Music] so i said i was going to stop using the grid i think i'm not going to here until i get to this other side of the collector so this might be it for me [Music] let's formalize that we'll use our road guidelines and make a kind of kind of weird connection over here [Laughter] there it's a reminder to myself in the future roads start curving [Music] so again our population is growing albeit slowly we still have some population growth we are going to just continue our pattern lots of residential some commercial and those are the types of patterns that you see on the edge you see these kind of urban collectors maybe some high visibility commercial along the highway and pockets of urban residential where you have uniform block sizes decent sized lots but not not huge and it's where we get lots and lots of death again oh boy just a constant constant theme uh in the last little while is lots of issues with death care [Music] so i just want to make sure that i don't have a contamination problem with any of my water sources okay so we're good there [Music] these are fine so even though it says that my drinking water is okay you just you start to wonder when you see that and you know i'm gonna go into here you look at the death rate and it's just it's climbing and again so is the birth rate [Music] transportation issue yeah maybe healthcare issue well there are a lot of sick people but it still shouldn't be this big of a deal at this point will retro fit in a few more crematoriums just want to make sure that our coverage is blanketed well certainly in this new neighborhood coverage is poor at a cemetery as well near this park i do think i might add one over here as well near this commercial district underneath the bridge great view but kind of well hidden too [Music] this makes this street really makes for an interesting place in my opinion [Music] go up yeah it's neat it's kind of neat place the subway there this metro just kind of tucked in there we certainly are going to need to go through and do a bunch of landscaping at some point in time [Music] okay so we were stagnating in our population but we're starting to pop back up again which makes me think that maybe yeah we're starting to get our death care situation under control again it was a real problem it still is a real problem i mean we have a pretty significant cemetery usage this probably didn't help that i was emptying these at least we're done so we've got one full over here we'll empty that but now you see that our our death care is really coming down so that's gonna help get our population up for about 1 200 away from our threshold and i feel like we're gonna get there soon i know i keep saying that i feel it now so i made this district because i had high-tech housing across the way i kind of want to transition from the high-tech housing high density high-tech not so high-density high-tech and then we'll just go into normal housing once we get back here it'll be a nice transition [Music] you see that it's increasing we look at our land values that increases our land value which will increase our density this district already has okay land values moore square is now up near spruce park we're getting closer certainly better than madison park kind of that whole coastal area in in a roughly similar spot interestingly our oldest district our best district in terms of land value we're doing well there we could do a lot more over here but we do want to maintain a mix of land values so i'm not overly concerned with having some lower land values so long as they're at least they're leveling up so that tells me that things are okay it's just not super a super wealthy area that's fine [Music] all right building out our water network water is going to be a limiting factor at this point in time as well you see that i'm moving towards the uh the yellow i think i might add a water tower to this roundabout so i've already decorated this one so it might be this roundabout right at the beginning of the city no water pipes in that area but we can fix that now there's only trees here so i will cross that's right of what and our sewage treatment capacity oh that was actually just because this was a new pipe not connected to our other network that said we are going to need to beef up that capacity as well so i'm going to add our next plant so long as it lets me and it does it's an ugly connection but it works all right we're about 250 away from reaching our population threshold i apologize again the length of this episode but we are going to hit the population that i initially told you we were going to and we've done a lot today i mean this is we've taken the city and really added about another third on to it redone a lot of our utilities and added a metro line so let's check and see how the how that line is doing it's not a curiosity that's good ridership got some good ridership in fact we need more vehicles we have extreme ridership is what i would is the way i would put it this actually might be a limiting factor at this point this first stop just so many people queued second stop as well that's one of the problems with having all that density near there but i think we'll be able to take care of it with these the nice thing about the nice thing about the metro lines is that you know you get a lot first of all people board quickly and the capacity is high so you can put tamp down these these issues a little bit quicker so uh that said we have done it hooray we uh we got 75 000 in population so we are gonna end it here today we've done a lot holy cow so thank you so much for joining me uh i want to give a huge shout out to my
