in this episode of horse shelter heroes we have a lot of adoptions not cat adoptions but horse adoptions we have a big adoption event and it goes really well you don't want to miss seeing all the adoptions we have some very special training for our staff and even dockatons you won't want to miss a single minute of horse shelter heroes pull around the side of this barn and you'll see like a porch okay and you just park there and then i'll bring you over here and that's where you're gonna see the horse okay okay guys this is jessie and shelby and they're going to assist you from this point okay and then i'll see you back in the office so this is holly okay she's one of the ones that best fit when i went over your application and but do you have any questions well my only concern with holly was her age how old is holly there's about 20. a lot of them are right around there yeah she doesn't seem to act her age but there is that are you the one looking for your horse okay we've got a ton of ones that are being halted broke or just getting saddle trained so that's a little more advanced i don't know that they'd be jumping or doing barrels lisa's concern is that she's going to be a little too spicy unfortunately we didn't find the perfect match for these last adopters but they're going to be keeping an eye on our website and we're going to keep an eye out for them as well because now i have a good idea of what would be a good fit for them [Music] this is sarah and jessie she was actually surrendered to us so i'm not sure oh if they did much with her yeah i think i had her trimmed last week she did pretty good just slow she gets nervous around her back end okay it's so hard they're all so cute yeah it's a mule her name's hazel she's a molly yep you're cute what do you think about her she's adorable i just think it's wrong to dump their animals at a place that they're gonna get killed i mean i love animals so i just feel that's wrong to like make people kill them dump them and stuff like that and mommy does rescue so i care for cats and dogs so and like after um chlorinating stuff they just get rid of them and dump them mules are very sure-footed whereas a horse might get itself in a mess a mule nose before it even approaches something if it can climb it and they can climb things that you would never believe she'll take the mule for now she's coming home with us so you'll get her back mommy do not fall in love with astrid mommy plans to fall in love with astrid because mommy fell in love with astrid when she first came here and mommy has just watched her progress over all of this time i love gray horses when the gray horses have dabbles it's just oh they're adorable tell me [Music] you could just so what do you guys think i didn't wanna you wanna adopt her yes they're adopting astrid and hazel oh my that's so awesome they're second sheet okay they like babies yes they're adorable the more you pull the more they fight back the more you won't go anywhere yeah the way to their new home together hazel is our first adoption and astrid is our second we're very thankful that they will have a new amazing family with a little girl that will just love and spoil them no matter what would you put your halter in the water huh were you thirsty this is raven we're going to show her at her adoption appointment what do you think huh we'll wait for jesse there you go thank you you're welcome all right i think we're ready all right so this is jessie and sarah and i'm gonna leave you with them and then you'll deal with me again in the office okay thank you this is raven she's the kind of horse that's always ready to roll she looks like it right she has so much life in her i'm like are you sure you're 18. right so do you guys mostly trail ride or show or mostly and then i show uh my my belgian just in local shows [Music] out on the trail she doesn't throw her head right i don't remember her throwing her head at all but when you get on she's like fighting that bit yeah so i bet you i wonder if she she was being ridden uh bitless yeah she could very well have been she's got such a sweet face i she's my pick of the horses right now now when you lunge her how does she how she i can lunge her for you if you want hey look who's over there is she your friend oh look at her but yeah that's luna for you so she was she was surrendered from a lady that couldn't ride yeah she she got injured or something couldn't do that so yeah she said basically it had been three years but she had got on her like two or three times right but she's never had a bit in her mouth that's amazing and i love it because i rode my air without a bit yes you are sweet how are you she drops her head down and just like walks along real quick i think you and aspen would get along real well lindy's a little you'll probably think she would be a dwarf next to lindy wouldn't she she'd look just like a pony purple on a black horse all right she's going to adopt luna super excited i'm excited too all right so i just need you to fill out this paperwork for luna did you okay the back form oh there you go i'm super excited so i'm going to put that in here and we have a little bag for you and we have a big bag right here wait for tree does it say when the last time she had her um her feet done it should be on every paperwork okay because all right just put her on schedule all right well thank you so much congratulations have a great day thank you so much [Music] i've been known to climb through windows and we always look forward to updates so i will send you one when it's especially next to lindy it'll be fun yeah that would be perfect when you go you can just pull out the other side of this bar and i'll open the gate for you okay thank you we'll keep you up to date i'm super excited yeah thank you guys luna is off to her new adventure she has come so far since she's been here she's definitely one of our favorites so we're going to miss her like crazy i know a lot of us can say that but we know that she has a new amazing home for with people that would just love her so this is jessie you'll be working with her today so most any questions you have you can ask her okay and this is holly hi holly and she's not a hard keeper we did have her on grain a little bit through the winter but really now she's just on grass and the round bales we have all right yeah are you looking or yeah we're both yeah you're both looking for yeah it looks like a smaller saddle than so it's a barrel saddle okay [Music] she came in she was pretty heard bound didn't like leaving her buddies or standing here by herself we've been working her pretty consistently for about a month now and she's doing really good our farrier had asked are you can we easily lift the hood so she does need a little more work on her back feet i was working with a little bit this morning and maddie our other trainer said she's had no problem with her would you like to ride her either one of you yes yeah how tall is she i can't remember i think she's 14 2 right around there 14. we thought she was taller you want to ride sora since you guys are going to ride together and stuff if you need you can always have somebody hold her you can adjust the back and it twists if you need a step we can grab it too you've got this so you're young and agile see [Music] but she's so pretty so i that's why i wanted to show you hers because i from what i read on your application and stuff i she's the best fit we have for you even though she's willing to go you think yeah it's really pretty even though she's sweet twenty she's she said she's got a lot of life in her it's hard to get off isn't it yeah you just want to take off don't you well like i said none of them are perfect if you're willing to invest the time and fix the little holes in her training here and there and we will we will research like crazy to do that yeah and we plan on riding every day i believe she's been here since december so about five months well if you guys want to talk about it or do you know what you're thinking no i think it's definitely a strong possibility yeah i think she's really pretty and she's all she's vaccinated and she'll be a good starter so i think we go with her yeah i like her yeah yeah that'll be hard to start with we'll see how she works and then mother was ready [Music] here is her coggins and her vet information and we have this bag here for you guys and then we have a bag of treats for you all right well thank you so much i so appreciate you guys i'm so excited for you [Music] he's a big boy come see him he may be yours he doesn't like being stalled for long periods of time that was stressful for him if you pull hard on the lead rope he's going to pull back i don't know where he learned that he could have had a chain across his nose maybe if you just like gently pull on him if he gets stuck with leading he comes along [Music] so i'm going to go ahead and saddle topaz just want them to be able to see that he is calm and pretty laid back under saddle but we're not going to ride him hard or anything because he's still gaining [Music] weight and then i usually just start them in a d-ring and see how they do from there so i i didn't ride him in the arena this is his first time in here too and he direct reigns so you pull the way you want to go he's got a couple holes what i've mentioned but with time i think he'll settle and realize nobody's going to hurt him a lot of them they learn to just go backwards and i don't like it i'd rather be reinforced no the answer's forward [Music] they tennessee walkers in their training for the shows to throw their feet high oh they put they soar their feet yeah and i think that's probably where some of her stress comes from [Music] because i tried to get her to like just go out and canter one day and she did it for about four strides but she definitely has a very definite gait doc you are fabulous with these forces i love watching you i just i wish people doctors were as kind as you i do too hi honey you want to come home you have fallen in love with sophists and he was supposed to go to ut but he gained too much weight while he was here i was so happy to hear that i said i caught mason they're gonna take toe pass oh wait a minute no okay watch the rest of the video it's okay i was watching it at work i'm like yes i don't know what that means that he's not paying too much weight but that's awesome so good job gaining your weight topaz so doc is just doing health certificates uh because these guys are going all the way to florida and we're really happy for them they're gonna have an excellent home there all right so how did you find out about horseplus i was looking around on youtube one day like i do every day and stumbled across a video i think from like february of last year and then i started watching and then i started binging and then i was like oh my gosh and then i went to your website and saw her actually and it's been like that for a couple months now so one of the first ones you saw yeah she didn't even have the march update yet on her it was still december on there so i've been following her for a while and yeah and then when you put that video out last week i was almost on tears like no no no no you can't you can't show people her so that's how we're all yeah so that's how so how far did you come to meet her in topaz so we're from a little town um uh over seven hours about probably eight hours by truck so we came in last night and uh came here today and gonna bring them home tomorrow morning so i have a daylight you're gonna meet each other now a daylight ride tomorrow yeah all right so how has your experience been today so you guys are the friendliest doc is great everybody's been great you've been willing to any crazy question we can think of i think uh you guys agree you've answered and made us comfortable and so you all been really wonderful so they're going to adopt moonshine and topaz doc are you uh are you supervising are you helping out with the adoption process i'm doing something that is unfamiliar with me i'm doing paperwork something that uh oh my gosh yeah we'll see you in the morning i'll see you in the morning bye bye bye thank you thank you so today we're super happy because some people drove all the way from florida way down south somewhere and they're very nice folks that are adopting moonshine and who else has oh yeah topaz that's the one that's pretty awesome they'll be back tomorrow morning to pick them up and we will have them ready to go super sweet adoption and they'll take care of you and then thank you back in the office thank you so this is daffodil we have up first for you okay she is small do you want to do you want some grain to maybe win her over oh she never been touched uh we have touched her a little bit for vet care in the shoot and did you on your email you're mostly interested in mares correct well i would take i mean i would take a gilding too because we do have a two-year-old gilding that he's ready to be halter trained he's just not been handled ever either i think his six-year-old probably a little too much for me because if i fall that's going to break well i understand that will you be boarding or yes yeah yeah and they're going to stay in a stall for okay a little bit and she does have a big riding arena yeah i think she'd be a little too much we did get him a halter on him this morning but that's just part of halter breaking look at you hi and his name is smokey smoky the thing is with one like him he's a clean slate so what everything he's taught it's you you get to do it your way i suggest you know just getting him comfortable with being touched and then find the reward he likes because then he won't fight the leading learning to lead so much and this is his first day in a stall [Music] [Applause] hi oh good boy that's a good voice you did so well you did you did so well you can come on in here he's been here a month yeah both of these two it's been oh and he's not spooky yeah i like him he's lovable look at that do you have a halter with you i do because we'll just go ahead and get a halter and then we'll get a picture with him if you're good with that okay all right she's going to not be no me too i appreciate it bingo is one of the horses that we rescued back in april from the auction he just recently came out of quarantine and guess what today he got adopted so that's pretty awesome that he is off to his new home so this is drain rain i thought it's all about the picture yeah when i adopted two years ago i adopted a rainfall oh really and sorrow and white yeah so they'd be twins right now we just have him at halter broke kind of restarting him from the ground up yeah he he presents himself a lot of the time with his ears back but it's not always a mean thing i don't know he's not dominant in the pasture but he looks like he would be so he's a little club footed on that foot but the farrier kind of helps keep him trimmed up keeping it yeah keeping it curled out i've had him on like some aloe vera juice and some different stuff for just stomach acidity because i felt like he was stressed when he came in so he's been on that kind of stuff to help with that he was my best option to show you today yeah angela said we could get two more as originally we'd come look at pictures where's the appaloosa he's pending adoption oh apparently yeah well what he just showed available in inside that's reading i didn't know yeah yeah until they're finalized we don't take them down okay you don't come in here ethan come on if you're gonna be messing with them you gotta meet them the people that came out to look at rain decided not to adopt him but that's okay maybe there's another home out there for him but now we have to move on to the next thing moonshine and topaz's people are here to pick them up and take them home to florida thank you you're welcome [Music] yeah yeah we all do though [Music] we've just had the last adoption appointment so jessie is cleaning up [Music] doc is on his way for his weekly vet visit so i'm just waiting for him to arrive we have all the horses ready so just waiting on him [Music] oh we gave her some silencing well you're going to give her a little tranquilizer you can do a better job when you when they're not jerking you around and everything so and then she's supposed to be a little touchy she may be a little head shy or something i don't that's just a rumor i heard what's happening dublin's getting her teeth done and i do not like that raven is also getting sedated she's going to get her teeth done today [Laughter] your legs should go straight and it like bows out she looks worse on the outside than she does on the inside looking at her bones maybe a little hoof work and we can straighten her up we're looking at her front left corpus which is what we call their knee but of course knees are in the back legs anyway it looks pretty clean to me they look sort of swollen and bony like there could be protrusions on arthritis starting but it looks one of the best knees we've x right here okay when y'all do it i'm just just getting stiff i couldn't move it yesterday so hold it right here and just move this joint like it like you need to okay like it's supposed to move don't roll it back and forth just go backwards and forwards [Music] i'm a little depressed it looks like she's she was she came here found her and it's gotten a little bit worse [Music] her feet were just terrible to start with we had high hopes for him but it doesn't look like it's worked out for us right now or her this is jessie um maybe about a month or so ago he was having some health problems he wasn't feeling well doc put him on a whole bunch of beds and everything and he did really good well he's turned for the worse again so the very first thing we did was call doc this morning to get him on the schedule to come out and see if there's something that we could do for him but [Music] we got high on the hawk let's go low next okay okay that's not bad so we're gonna go low okay i wonder if that's sort of broken in there i mean you know it doesn't look much much worse than you and you start making stuff up if you look at it too long i am putting bpo3 on there bpo3 is a carolinic shampoo deep sesame deep cleansing and antimicrobial it will uh get through the layer of slime and stuff so uh when we apply any medications to the leg it'll it'll adhere better smokey for starters he's a little two-year-old guilding he just started learning to lead the day so he's a little shy he might smell you gonna smell me right around too that's about what sound was when we got her she was about to he likes his neck more than his face okay he's got a brain full of knowledge and sense i feel like but the first day like today he did like we were able to walk like a little bit little circles in the round pen with some forward motion are you smokey you're not smokey you're chocolate yeah does he have any story at all he came from auction so we really don't know what his history was hi andy she's not like if you she thinks you have grain on you like when you go to get her she's like right there god good girl good girl and she's how old 15 18 right in that mid teenage years [Music] good girl yeah yo if you just fill in the yellow parts okay okay well we had a wonderful experience and saw two really marvelous horses that absolutely positively fit our needs um indy was the one we picked because she was a little bit older and was probably a better fit for us and for the the mayor that we currently have but we needed to talk it over for a little bit before we made our final decision uh but it really didn't take long we got to the end of the gravel road and by that time we knew that that uh indy was the one for us and so we made the phone call and said hey we're coming back to do this today the family that adopted tony they had originally scheduled a transporter to come down and pick him up because they're all the way from wyoming that's like a long ways away i've driven there myself but sadly the transporter's engine blew on his truck they weren't sure what they were going to do they tried to find a different transporter but they couldn't so they jumped in their car and drove down and were here by the next day to pick them up and the exciting thing is while they were here they also fell in love with pizarrio the little donkeys so they got to travel all the way to wyoming together they get to be buddies with a two-year-old so that is very [Music] exciting [Music] so they've been vaccinated so they're able to come into our office without a mask so they are also adopting to zarya along with tony [Music] it'll be fun [Music] she hasn't gained my confidence to put her as a beginner on her quite yet but she has i'm sure she's carried kids and done stuff like that before from she's pretty responsive the pony which she's not and then that's flicka so she's 18 and she's in her 20s she is um she's sarah's a beginner and jessie's comfortable with sarah ryden so as far as her demeanor and stuff is she buddy sour and stuff like that she might have written her by herself but she doesn't seem to be that way [Music] [Music] this one's ready to rock and roll health-wise so i'm afraid this one's gonna be a little bit too much for the kids like i said i don't need another one i've got i've got plenty for me to ride um i mean it's kind of hard to i would like to watch herbie saddle that i mean it's fine not to that's why i have her in here if i want to see her and with her in the shape like i'll have the vet check her on and off too just to make sure she's sometimes they gain weight and you find new things [Music] perfect [Music] one two three everybody look at me and smile she's wearing it all right there you go all right paperwork okay i'm so excited that you got flicka and i think she's gonna be perfect for it the little girls are so cute they it's right up their alley that's so awesome i'm so glad that you found slicker today [Applause] amari and flicker were both seen by these adopters today and flicka fit what exactly their family needed and we are just so thankful that it worked out for them and the little girls get to go grow up with flicka and it's just perfect our adoption event has been a huge success we adopted out nine horses into wonderful homes and we couldn't be happier for them we're doing a compassion fatigue seminar for our employees and also high forest humane society the elephant sanctuary and different people at docs associated with because compassion fatigue is a real thing and it's the number one killer of horse rescue heroes out there so we're doing a seminar here today addressing compassion fatigue and the true concern it is that compassion fatigue can kill an organization and so all our employees are taking compassion fatigue training so they can be aware of the signs of it jason you want a black one and it's as simple as saying out loud or in your head the way our brain is set up is we are very much we have a negativity bias the saying is uh the negative screens and the positive only whispers right you understand how nuanced and complex and difficult this work is and so we need to be really generous with each other with our staff and our co-workers offering up authentic appreciation for the effort that people are putting in the way that they're making a difference for you the way they show up as a co-worker or a staff member and the difference they're making for animals and this is a massive motivator at work so compassion fatigue it's a topic that a lot of people don't even think about or realize when they're following an organization that i know you as a veterinarian probably come in contact with it all the time yeah i think it's a very relevant topic especially after the year that we all had with the pandemic everybody's been working really hard and not having a lot of the same outlets that we have that um help improve our work-life balance so i really enjoyed it and i found that it was applicable not just to my work at the elephant sanctuary but also i'm on the board of the humane society for dogs so we deal with a lot of the same situations that you guys do um with small animals yeah yeah and all animals i mean sheltering little animals are big animals yeah it's the same thing we're running into so yeah one thing that really resonated with me um from the talk was the idea that meaningful work is hard work um and i think that's a really important picture i listened to that and i thought man that's so true i'm so glad that i have a job that um is mission on that is making a big difference but it also comes with the hard stuff that we have to work through so i really appreciate it i took lots of notes so yeah yeah i saw you running away yeah thank you guys thanks for coming yeah absolutely so the compassion pt course do you think it's an important thing that we did here for our employees and just understanding it more it yes everybody needs to understand it for some some reason i've coped with it for 40 years been close to it a couple of times i think having more help having people you trust having people that you can rely on have the same beliefs that you do and and just so there's the support system with the work i think the strain and it looks like here and in the other organization i work for um that the club they're close-knit in each one like all the media people sit here together the horse care people sit together office people sit close together it's an ever going ongoing it never ends the the suffering we see but we're making a difference for each and every animal we come in contact with never ends yes so anyway yeah thank you thanks for doing this yeah awesome [Music] you
