what's up guys js2 cents and i'm back here at micro center here in tustin california but i got a special guest today we're gonna be building a computer with zion johnson first round draft pick for the los angeles chargers so why is he building a computer we're gonna talk about that today so first and foremost a huge thank you to microcenter for bringing both of us out here um okay so real quick background you're 22 years old stats matter it's nfl you're six foot three 315. it's rare i meet someone bigger than me i'm six foot three two seventy five so put that in perspective you just got drafted by the los angeles chargers you're literally getting ready to start camp so what are you looking forward to most like it's your first year in the nfl what are you most nervous about and excited about i'm probably the most nervous and excited about the same thing i'm ready to put the pads on and kind of go against top tier talent you know we have a lot of really talented guys on our team like khalil mack joey bosa especially on the defensive side and i want to see what it feels like to go against guys like that and you know really just show what i can do at the same time yeah because it's like you know you you you could be a big hitter in university but then you get to the guys that have been doing it you know 10 years already 15 years and they just know how to use that strength you know what i mean because it's like sometimes the smaller guys hit harder than the bigger guys because they just know how to put all that energy into it absolutely what i found kind of fascinating is the fact that your your football career hasn't been that long so why don't you tell me like when you first started playing to how you got to where you are now so i joined the football team my junior year high school didn't really play because i was a golfer and golf shape football shape not really no it's about flexibility and yeah being agile exactly so i had to really get into shape that whole year i played right tackle my senior year and i had a pretty decent year i had an opportunity to go to davidson college and then from there i went to bc and you're right so did you start playing in the prep for senior year did you actually play your junior year as well no i didn't play just because i couldn't get on the field we had pretty good guys on on our team you know christian darasaw was a first round pick for the vikings he was our left tackle um we had about five nfl guys on our team and i had to develop right honestly my whole career was about me developing into the player i am now yeah and that obviously that development's going to continue on through your career absolutely um so okay computer stuff here you have you actually have a technology background so once you tell us about uh you know your university and your tech background yeah so i went to boston college and my undergrad degree i got in cyber security no no sorry computer science and i got my grad degree in cyber security so uh both of those like would be amazing careers on their own like but i i it's awesome to hear that because you hear a lot of guys that come right out of high school and maybe start college and they have a lot of natural talent they kind of drop out of school and they go right to sports and then they don't have a whole lot of a fallback plan unless they're really good at money management a good money manager um then they're you know they've got a five to ten year career beating up their body and what are they gonna do next you know so that both of those could land an amazing job on their own how many computers would you say you've built i built one and then that was probably in high school and then since then i replaced the the cpu and my graphics card in it and that's about it okay what games are you looking forward to playing on this well i love playing skyrim and even though it's an old game i still play it like a huge goal yeah and the mods are you know great for that game you know i like all the bethesda games the fallout even elder scrolls online i know some people hate that game but i'm uh i'm big into that oh you mentioned bethesda are you gonna play some like doom and doomy turtle and such i haven't played that but looking at it i'm really thinking about playing that i want to play elden ring and some of the news this will definitely this rig will definitely allow you to turn up the graphics and see all the pretty stuff absolutely you'll get all sidetracked while you're playing all right so let's go through the parts here so right off the bat for the graphics card we've got a tough gaming rtx 3080 so this is going to clearly get the job done when it comes to playing 1080p 1440 even 4k uh cpu-wise here we've got an 1100 700k this is nice because of the fact that i'm going to be doing a video in the future here that's basically titled the best isn't always the best because it's easy to over spec certain components of your system and it's all about like balancing so you've got a really fast gpu with also an equally fast cpu um so for ram here looks like you got some trident z are you are you an rgb guy do you want to see all the lights blinking and stuff or what's your taste on that i don't want it to look like a rainbow but to have some lighting you know maybe like you need blue one color like blue and yellow or something like that that looks i like that see that's the benefit to our to rgb is you can just make it any imagination of colors that you want so so we also got the tough gaming z590 plus so that's gonna pair really well with the 11th gen uh we got a thousand watt power supply which is plenty corsair h150i elite lcd windows pro 980 pro nvme and then we've got a two terabyte spinning barracuda drive um how much time you think you're going to have for gaming during the season not much huh not much but that's the thing during the season not a lot of time but the off season with not having school anymore i'll have a lot more free time to really delve into my my hobbies famous last words of anyone that's gone into any sort of professional whether it be sports movies music because i i've worked with uh athletes before i've worked with musicians you know we worked with post malone we did terry crews the project and i'll tell you all of them went from like i have all this time to i literally have no time yeah so let's highlight those words he's looking forward to the off season and all the extra time he's gonna have next thing you know no time but that's how everything is all right so what do you say we start building this all right well of course we've got our ifixit kit okay so i want to ask like that transition from entering the draft to obviously you know getting picked in first round with 17th overall right how nerve-wracking was that because at that point you're literally going okay does the nfl believe i got what it takes right right um honestly i didn't know where i was going to get picked i didn't have an idea i just hoped where i went i went to the best situation possible and you know i helped and prayed about it talk with my agent and my family and you know i actually was at the draft so i was able to sit in the draft room and kind of see how things were going and you know it was just a blessing to uh guys a lot of people were at home waiting for the phone call or something exactly but they have a set up in chairs uh in this room where you can see everyone else around was it hot like were you sweating yeah you're there in a suit and stuff and it's i was a little hot i can't lie push down and down and out right towards you this little arm right here as long as the writing is right side up with the socket that should line up just fine here we go how many computers would you say you've built throughout your i started building computers at five five jesus i if i had to make a guess we were talking about this not that long ago because remember i worked in i.t too uh where we supported a company that was across the nation with multiple offices and at least a thousand yeah hey so i guess to the point to where you can kind of do it all with your eyes closed and and whatnot but what i mean every now and then i still make a pretty rookie mistake and i think that'll always be the case which is what keeps me humble because how many times i tear my personal rig back apart so you do speed builds too i can but my problem is i get real hung up on wire management oh yeah and that's time consuming you said you have a graduate degree so you have a master's i have a master's in cyber security what is that what does that program look like what do they teach you so it's a lot of law so you have to learn international law and um i guess that makes sense because if you're dealing with security then you have to know what's you have to know what the laws are that everyone has to kind of stay within the same thing with online protection is there's going to be gray areas and stuff i think that are that people are kind of navigating within but that's the kind of degree where you get you could get a job with that's going to go on the bottom and it's going to poke through those four holes that are in the corners yeah just another quick thing on the law it's just very important because especially with international law there's not a really detailed um definition on what cyber terrorism or cyber espionage and what the difference between those things are and i think people are just now really starting to hear a lot more about it you know you get these major corporations even these these government sites that kind of become ransomware and such yes ransomware is like a huge threat but also it's becoming like a um country versus country thing as well just put the screws through you just thread thread these screws finger tight as tight as you can go well as tight as if i mean at your size you might want to go as tight you don't want to break it yeah all right as tight as i go he's twisting the whole counter with it okay so i'm curious what is the workout schedule like for a lineman it's really everything but i'll say one thing that people kind of underrate for lymon is your core strength oh yeah yeah you gotta do a lot of core exercises because that's what keeps you stabilized when somebody tries to hit you with a power move or a rip or something that's how that's what keeps you stabilized and able to really stay tight and fight against that move um and that's that's something i tell like a lot of young linemen that i try to mentor and work with that you know just because you're the big guy you got to go in there and do core stuff too do your planks do your your plate holds and well because being the big guy too a smaller faster guy is going to try and use his speed to get you off balance and get around you absolutely you have to be really good at reading their body language and their not necessarily their footwork but their core too i mean it's it's my understanding when you watch their feet you're gonna get pulled off but you watch their belly button or their core it's harder to to fake with that area of the body right yeah with your hips and it's really where your hips go your body goes so um also you get tells pre-snap like you can kind of tell first based off the first two steps what a guy's trying to set up but um some guys are so good at really you know setting that move up that they can make everything look the same those those are what the best guys look like same thing with receivers you know they can make every route look the same it's a lot harder for you it's like poker you have to know their tail right absolutely if the setup looks the same for every move they make then it's a lot harder to tell what's coming but i bet you get hit just completely blasted by a move you're gonna remember it oh yeah yeah especially like i'd say at the professional level everybody's a competitor everybody doesn't want to lose for personal reasons as well and i think like when you get beat with something really bad it's almost ingrained in your mind because you remember that because you remember how it feels and you never want that to happen and when it happens the second time which inevitably does you really remember yeah absolutely so are you pretty much born and raised in maryland yes i've lived there pretty much my whole life um some of us feel a whole lot different out here this summer huh oh yeah i mean it's crazy because when i think of california i think yeah it's hot sun and stuff but no it's a lot hotter back home because of the humidity it's yeah the heat is a little different here what's your favorite part about building computers like what's the what part of the process is your favorite cable management cable manager yeah i think it's just because i think it's part of like my ocd honestly like seeing wires all a mess just drives me nuts so kind of making organization of all that chaos to me is just the most satisfying part and then you'll appreciate it being organized if you ever have to go and service it and go take something out like a fan or something if it's all just a mess and you can't figure out what's what or where anything goes and you just hate life all right so lee lee 011 dynamic pretty awesome case i mean we've done reviews of this stuff so you guys can go check those out um the nice thing about this zion is there's a lot of panels that you can take off so like once you take off the top here which is just these two thumb screws which don't fall out then everything else slides out and i'm only warning you that way you don't drop any glass you know it's funny i i played football for about almost 15 years i've never been to a profession like an nfl game really i've never been it's just it's just never actually worked out that's what's crazy about it like i don't know how much football i've watched on tv and stuff we've got even before so far steve was there we had the coliseum you know and i just i prolonged i think part of it for the longest time while living in california we're no california team so they all moved out of the state for a while raiders and now they're in yeah all right so now i think we're ready to put the motherboard in there see he's got big old mitts it's gonna be fun watching him try and get a little screws in there and little plugs and stuff so you have to go to camp tomorrow so you literally aren't gonna have like any time to enjoy this right away okay on monday oh monday what day is it today thursday oh you got all weekend oh yeah oh yeah well we were supposed to do this next week but then the schedule got moved around yeah yeah yeah i found out that the rookies come out a week early right because we weren't staying a week later all right so i think what we'll do next is like i was mentioning to you i like to do order of operation based on the case even though there's a fair amount of room to access things here and i still i think we should mount the aio here because that's how a lot of people really like to do it in this chassis i still like to kind of get cables and stuff plugged in first so i would probably plug in like the bottom power cables led cables um the usb plug for the control box that comes with the the fans and the aio like these power plugs and then just sort of have everything ready you know i always growing up i always wanted to be a computer engineer before i played um football and um kind of my passions kind of switched but i still have a hobby and technology and right you know i watch a lot of youtube videos on it and try to what it's funny because if you're either into tech you're not and it's it's every now and then i'll meet someone that's even high school age that's just because i i don't care about computers i've never used a computer and i'm like that's weird in today's age to like never have used one and that'd be so much simpler to not be dealing with computers on a daily basis because you're like uh kind of known as like a the tech guy do you ever have like family members hit you up like hey can you help me with my computer it won't turn on iron no no most of my family is like i wouldn't say savvy but i would say sufficient no what i get is 3.7 million people asking me why their computer doesn't work through email and text and stuff like is there is there like a weight and a body fat percentage and just kind of a strength level they want you to stay within to be optimal uh yes but it's different for everybody like my optimal body weight and and body fat is gonna be different than a guy who's like six eight three hundred and fifty pounds right but um it really is it determines it depends on how you play at that weight and how powerful you are and it's kind of like a a self-diagnosed type of thing but um once you figure out what weight and body fat you play the best at that's probably where you're gonna want to stay at if you were you said 225 i mean 100 extra pounds almost whether it's muscle or not that's a lot of strain on your heart and everything you know and your diet because man your body's gonna want you feeding that muscle too yes that's why i try to have a real strict diet so don't put the bad stuff in yeah so i mean yeah pretty easy just building a computer it's just knowing the order of events and because you obviously have to kind of plan ahead on certain things when i did i just watched a youtube video and followed that that's what most people do yeah so was it our video that you watched on how to build a computer now is this uh canadian guy linus where you going [Music] he's savoring apparently there you go uh okay so have you grew up in maryland the other microcenter out in maryland yes there's one uh in rockville so people are already gonna be mad at you then because there's people all over the country that have no like is this they're too far from one yeah and they see like the craziness in this story if you like tech and yes this is the shameless straight up plug of the store and anyone that's ever shopped in a micro center knows there is absolutely there's no way you could be into computers or tech or electronics and not like this store so you had access to one though so you already knew like how good they were oh yeah i've been there before that's where uh i put a 1080 in my other uh pc like five or so years ago and i went to micro center to buy it before i put it in there yeah no i mean the nice thing about this the storage here i don't know if the one back home is like here this store was just remodeled earlier this year and they have these kiosks over there now where you can basically you know like if you're shopping online you put everything in your cart yeah you know you can actually do that over there at the kiosk and then you basically can say hey microcenter employee go go grab the parts they'll grab everything up and then you get it from like the the pickup window just like you would online so you can go and browse around the rest of the store or look at 3d printing audio laptops whatever it is and then someone else is grabbing all those parts for you but the cool thing about that is the fact that it has a compatibility um like knowledge base in there so if you grab like a motherboard and cpu that aren't compatible it'll tell you it'll tell you and then it will only the cool thing is you can't even really do that because as you're selecting components the stuff that's available to select after that is only stuff that's compatible you don't have to have a lot of builder experience be able to do that i noticed when i was picking for this one that i pretty much once i turned that on it took away a lot of the options that weren't compatible but now the cool thing too is the build showcase stuff that micro center has so if you're shopping you can you can see other builds that have used components that you have and kind of use it for some inspiration and stuff too i think we're gonna put this build up there too aren't you yeah yeah i can put that up there and but yeah it's kind of neat because it's sometimes you you need to get some inspiration on what you want to do with your build or what does the case look like with these components and it all comes in handy and it's it's all free and stuff so i recommend anyone out there right now watching this video in the description you'll find a link to the um the online showcase as well for building so that's why it looks a bit different but we're almost done he's doing the best part which is installing the graphics card all the crunches all the crunchy sounds they're fine that's all normal normal [Music] okay so we're ready to do our first boot for the record lower uh ssd which we switched out to an a uh 860 evo is it 860 whatever it's a two terabyte ssd we got the spinning drive out of there in case he has to move the computer around locations or whatever there's nothing mechanical to get broken we also don't want windows to access you put a bootloader on that drive so we leave it unplugged until we're ready i'm gonna flip on the power supply you push power and we'll see if we get a post okay we got lights that's a good sign that flicked on for a second that's also a good sign that's on which is a good sign okay all right yeah yeah it works [Music] drivers are installed all the lighting is set up we went with the obligatory blue and gold for obvious reasons um okay any thoughts on this build how it went i think it went fairly well been a long time since i've uh tried to do a build but i think it went pretty smooth and i'm very happy with the product that we have and i'm excited to you know get started on it what's the first game you're gonna do you decide of course he does skyrim and mods so gotta mod it up get the best graphics uh make it real life well uh that's not it so you've got peripherals and stuff that are going with this so we've got the logitech pro super light gaming mouse uh the g733 headset which is kind of nice because it's also rgb and stuff so you can make it match the the charger seam if you want we've got the corsair k100 rgb this is the new keyboard here so it's got a bigger dial it's got a little display on it i don't even have this keyboard why don't i have this keyboard jeremy but like you were asking off camera will this work with the lighting that you've already set up and it's like yes because it's of course their product it'll work with iq you just have to go in and set the colors for it because i think by default uh it's going to go rainbow since we don't have a one one sync for everything right now and then monitor wise we've got an ultra gear lg monitor here so this is a nano ips so it's quantum dot technology which is going to give you like deeper blacks and richer colors it is ips it's 180 hertz it's hdr uh one millisecond graded gray and this is is this 1440p i do believe it's a 1440p so yeah i mean you talk about making skyrim look pretty with especially when you turn on hdr then you're Elden Ring and Doom Eternal are great games. He'll be in for a lot of fun when he gets to those and they'll look and run great on a top-of-the-line comp that he can afford now.
