welcome back everybody thanks for being here i'm yumble today we're going to talk about trains so trains are pretty fundamental in the game of city skylines i think that there is kind of a lot to talk about but i really want to keep this very very simple and just describe the the trained fundamentals so that you can use trains for passengers and you can use trains for for cargo in your cities for your industrial areas and for goods to your commercial areas so here we're in this simple kind of map that i've done in dendrome lz which is a downloaded map but you can do pretty much everything i'm about to do in vanilla if there's if there's stuff that's not vanilla i'll mention it but the concepts will all be good in vanilla and modded city skylines so here i've got the most basic form what i would call the most basic form of trains which is just a transit line so we're going to start there we'll start with the transit line so i've got this this passenger train station here it's operating we're moving 403 people per week it looks like should be similar at both stations since there's only well i'm wrong 200. well they're going back and forth and this is because we built one train station under the train menu this is just your stock standard train station we built one and then we connected it via the stock train track to the other one and then we opted to draw a line using the train line drawing tool which you unlock once you've built a train station so this is the simplest form of train i would say is two stations in your city you use the train station line tool you click on the track on one station you click on the track on the other station you click on the track on the first station and that creates a line if there were multiple stations you could go further you could click all the way around to a third station and then back to this one and it would make a circle and then if you make a circle you can make one going the opposite direction but keep it simple two stations one stop here one stop here single transit line you'll notice this is not connected in any way to the external trail uh trail train line just combine two words into one they're not connected at all to the external line these lines go all the way to the edge of the map and they actually spawn if you've never seen what the edge of the map looks like well this is where this is what it is there's uh these these things are the spawns these little arrows here and highways have spawns and trains have spawns and planes and any any uh vehicle that can spawn on the edge of the map looks kind of like that that little green arrow there so if we want to receive uh passengers from another city just to show you in the simplest way possible let's say we let's say right next to the highway here what if there were you know this is i i didn't actually plan this part but this makes a ton of sense right what if it were right next to the highway and we wanted to receive passengers you would have to ensure first of all that this by default it'll say allow inner city trains inner city is it just means from a different city and once you've uh once you've established where you want that to be you can connect your rail line to the external line and i'm just going to do like a kind of half hazard we're just going to hook it up boom there it is and this will receive trains from this direction if we want to receive trains from the other direction or allow our trains to go in the other direction we'll have to connect to the to the train track going in the opposite direction i've got anarchy turned on right now so this would so this will probably work or if it doesn't it's it's whatever it's not that big a deal oh here we go that's an example of just a terrible that's that's if you see we'll see if it does it again if there's no tracks you can see how the tracks have disappeared there it's because i built it with anarchy this is really not a very good train intersection let's see if move it can uh can solve this there so that is just a terrible train connection this road is very short if i had more space i would do two sides like this like your typical train intersection would look like this really typical train intersection kind of looks like a y or may look like a y depending on how you approach building it it could look just like that and then you just build off of this build off the end you know there it is so the trains that want to go right can go right the trains that want to go from the other side left can come into the left and you can exit in both directions here so this is kind of the terrible version of that but this will work and eventually if we click this and click the the toggle traffic routes button will start seeing trains spawning and coming in in both directions this is this is bad i didn't explain why it's bad it's bad because it's ugly but more importantly it's bad because it doesn't allow space for a train so let's say two trains have to wait for another for one another in this junction this one's going to be blocking the main line so that's why that's bad but i've just done it because i don't want to rearrange the highway make it look more like this and you'll be happier you know make it look more like that you can do that in vanilla that shape is the common uh train intersection i don't think there's any train intersection built into this map necessarily but it's okay so yeah eventually this will start spawning trains and we'll be able to see vehicles pathing to it as long as the allow inner city train trains button is checked so there we go that's that's the basics of these trains for you one thing that i didn't uh mention i'm gonna put it back on one speed is that this occurs this is a crossing this is like a train it's called an at-grade crossing for trains so it means that the trains are going to intersect with the road and if the road that you're using is good it'll automatically construct this little first of all this lump to to get the trains over the road but also crosswalks and also also this infrastructure this stop sign for trains basically or signals other roads this is a vanilla four-lane road it looks a little bit different than that other downloaded road when i do it but same same concept the train is crossing here so cars cannot cross otherwise they'll be hit by the train and it's really cool the things actually go down the uh the gates we'll call them i suppose where's the train there's only one train on the line right now but as it comes out you'll see these lines will drop these uh the gates will drop and everyone will obey it and the train will pass so yeah you can have at grade crossings if you don't want an at great grade crossing you can use the page up button to draw a higher to draw the next node at a higher point so like here i did not want an at-grade crossing coming off or a highway this is very very low usually i'd make it a little taller but in a pinch this works i only did like this is probably only eight meters high maybe nine meters high usually you want it to be about 12 meters high but i did not want to create an extra intersection right next to our major intersection next to our major interchange so we avoided that and we avoided the highway by going above grade and then back down to grade for this one because i figured why not that's kind of a realistic solution if you have a train coming through it'll cross the road in places so what have we covered that's a train line using the passenger train line using the passenger train tool and we've built an inner city train which requires no outside connections i haven't seen anyone use it yet we'll keep checking back over the course of the video and hopefully we'll see a train come to it just to prove my point but now there's other types of trains too you'll notice we've got this cargo train terminal here so let's say for the sake of argument let's say that we've got a train station down here let's put one there and i've got this other train station i've got a double track cargo station i think bad peanut might have made this one this is this is a modded asset but this concept will hold true no matter what so i'm going to use this station up here just like this station which which is making a fool out of me and i have yet to receive a train at this station oh there it is there it is there it is we've done it we've cracked the code a train has come that's that's public trans transport and cargo the pink line you love to see it cool so it is functional even though we have this crummy little turn it's totally functional so that's just beautiful cargo trains will do the same thing i was sweating there close one cargo trains will absolutely do the same thing if we allow them to so this one i'm gonna leave um well okay there's no there's no inner city trains button on that station but bear with me using the same track i can connect this station to this incoming track and that's great that's awesome this will now start receiving i'm gonna i'm gonna fix this there's a way to there's a way to curve this so it doesn't look so awful there we go so now this station will begin receiving trains from other places importing cargo and it will also attract vehicles on our side to export cargo so if you see vehicles from from our industrial area making the trip across over here to come into this industrial area they're probably looking to export cargo and the trucks conversely the trucks coming out of this when a train pulls in a cargo train instead of people trucks drive out and that's pretty great and you might be wondering hey yumble hey weirdo why did you use a double track station that seems kind of you know why'd you do that i'll show you right now check it out i'm going to connect this to the track in two different places let's see if we can match the angle of anything ah we can't it's whatever i just want to i just want to connect this in two places so these guys can come in here and that's swell that's that's just beautiful i also want to have a bypass to the whole thing so we'll have one that goes around to the end here and crosses has a has an at-grade crossing and i'm just spitballing this you can you can make it up however you want to i'm just kind of making it work for what i want to do so let's say 12 units this is precision engineering now if you if you have precision engineering and you hold shift you get to see those units so we're going to go 94 meters down so it matches 96 close enough that works for me so we're going around the corner this one the internal track will be for receiving cargo and then the outside track so trains will come to this inner track the the double track station don't get hung up on it oh it'll all become clear in a minute i'm not going to explain it just yet but it's really it's useful to use if you want to not have trains driving through the station all the time and another one more thing to throw in just to muddy up further it's not good to have just a track running through the station like let's say you have a single track just vanilla station here it's not really good to run an external train track through this and then into another station because what if a train wants to drive past this you should always have a bypass so that's what i'm doing here i'm creating a bypass for this station so that this so that they don't have trouble with uh with vehicles oh there we go trucks are already coming i don't want them to have trouble with trains backing up in the station if they want to go past and come down to this station i want to allow that you know that's exactly what we what we want effectively so let's continue on let's do say a 15 by 15 here sure 15 units 14 15 units approximately none of it needs to be perfect and none of it will be perfect so deal with it this one i'm actually going to use anarchy and just skip across here there's a way to do this like if you want to go down under the station we can we can do keep it elevated and we'll just go sorry keep it grounded and we'll just go down to like negative 12 meters and then we'll cross these these roads here then we'll go back up and this would be a if you don't want to make a tunnel and you just want to make it so it's underground like so we're just going under a road that's pretty handy way to do it because i really don't want the train to cross the highway that's something i cannot recommend strongly enough don't let your train touch your highway usually unless you're doing a very very rural build where it doesn't matter but generally you don't want your highway vehicles stopping for trains so that worked out kind of nicely right we've got this nice little dip very very similar to our single point partial cloverleaf build we did in the last video where we have it ducked down and we use the key wall around here with key anarchy to make it look nice you can you can put walls on the sides of this if you want to make a very nice looking uh ravine for your train essentially and now that i've seen what we have going on here i kind of want to switch this up a bit this guy will curve down and we'll we'll go diagonally until we hit this so let's see what that might look like we're gonna cross the road here we're gonna do an at-grade crossing with the train like so and we're gonna connect this here and get rid of this thing because that's not part of the plan anymore we can curve this little spot here a quick tip for curving with move it if you click the node and hold alt it'll turn on snapping mode and you can make a real smooth curve with snapping so move it as a mod for the game sorry if you're not playing with mods but it just makes things a little bit cleaner if you use move it to slope your you know you can slope your your stuff get a nice grade going down into the ravine and then back out again then we're crossing at grade and we're going back out of the city so now this one's connected this one should be accepting inner city trains automatically as well so no problem there i do want to have the ability so now what what we've earned here is two external connections where if i've got shipments coming in and i don't want them to come by truck now they're allowed to come in by train just like uh pedestrians will cause or citizens will come in by car unless you give them a train station then they might start coming in by train especially if you have good transit in your city cargo likewise will start shipping in by train if you allow it so we've given ample station here for them to ship in ample station down here all connected externally to this one um but it can only come from one direction there's a chance that i'll make a modification and let it come from the opposite direction too but that's for another time so far this is our external connection crosses the road if we go left it goes into this station if we go right it goes under the highway and down to this station we'll see we'll see stuff spawning there eventually right now there's nothing spawning yet um but i have faith that it will work out and i said this was a bypass to this station so let's actually do one of these we're gonna make a turn oh look at that it created a train that's not a vanilla train that's a train asset i have downloaded but it looks like we're exporting right now so enough vehicles have shown up to the station here to export this train and this one's going right off the map it has to so that pink line shows you it's going right to the d spawn where we've exported some goods nice job every time a train spawns a bunch of trucks don't spawn so that big train just avoided a bunch of trucks going onto the highway which is exactly the point of trains if it's more efficient to ship it by train you're you're better off shipping shipping it by train right um so now what i want to do is create a a way for for these two to connect these two train stations that we've got is that a gentle enough curve i suppose it is that should work so i'm going to connect this to the outer line this is bad peanuts asset by the way so the inner line is just for receiving right there we've received this this other line is just for shipping stuff to our other station between stations like an inner interstation connection uh highway it's really not that grandiose i'm making it sound better than it is but let's say that we wanted stuff from this industrial area to receive stuff uh goods from this industrial area there's not enough people in the city that's why the buildings are dying so ignore that but let's say we want vehicles to go from one side of the city to the other without having to take this road because it's congested or it's silly or what have you they can do it by train just like if exporting is more efficient by train the game will let you export by train because you can fit like imagine you've just saved the road system in your city 100 trucks if 100 trucks are off the roads then wonderful if 100 pedestrian if 100 pedestrians or if 100 vehicles that like cars that would have been driving on the road are gone because of a train wonderful you did a great job that was just 107 people well now 115 just got on that's 115 people that don't have to walk through crosswalks and don't have to drive across town and they don't have to be in the way transit is beautiful and this oh there we go look at this these guys are already exporting they're exporting they're taking the bypass so the bypass is good because they don't have to drive through this station gumming up the works so we've successfully created a an external connection that also has the option to ship back and forth to itself so our city can generate trains we're exporting again look at this there's a lot of exporting going on right now we can also import i was hoping to showcase that but it's okay it's the same in concept and they can also ship in between each other provided there's enough enough goods that show up to do it and you can check to make sure it's working by clicking on the station and clicking on this traffic routes view this little button with the arrows that shows you all of the incoming and outgoing vehicles going towards it and that's essentially without getting too technical that is everything that you need to know about trains um the the tracks are how they run you can connect multiple train stations together cargo stations don't need to have lines drawn between them passenger trains do need to have lines drawn between them and if you want an external connection make sure it's connected to the external line included in the map and make sure that it has this box checked allow inner city trains and sometimes you should avoid hitting the road with with an at-grade intersections at great intersections sometimes it's okay on a on a more calm road that is um that's the big idea guys let me know if you have any questions about this or yeah if you have anything to add about trains that i forgot um thank you once again for watching the video i've gotten some really good feedback about the videos lately so i'd like to continue teaching skylines and learning skylines and doing a lot with skylines but yeah let me know if you have questions feel free to follow me subscribe to me here on youtube also subscribe to me over on twitch that's where i mainly hang out and that's where i do my main content creation and let me know if there's other videos you want to see for sure because i'm always looking to show people things guys thank you so much for hanging out and i will see you in the next video
