desert is a great reminder that temptations in our lives can be overcome if we go to jesus and choose to remain with him today the first sunday of lent is national national migrants day jesus says heart that is the word of faith that we preach for it if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with a heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth is so saved for the scriptures says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand in the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down here for it is written he will command his angels and concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you unless you dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it is also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ please be seated according to the tradition this is how an eskimo hunter kills a wolf first the eskimo coats his knife blade with animal blood and allows it to freeze then he adds layer after layer of blood until the blade is completely concealed by the frozen blood next the hunter fixes the knife in the ground with the blade up so when the wall follows the sensitive nose to the source of the sand and discover the bait he licks it tasting the frozen blood so he begins to leak faster more and more and harder and harder the wolf licks the blade his craving for blood becomes so great that the wolf does not notice the razor sharp blade on his tongue and his appetite continues to crave more until he lost all his blood and dies my dear friends the devil works like this kimono we enjoy what the devil gives us for the same reasons that the wolf begins leaking the knife blade so it seems safe and delicious at first but it will never satisfy us it leads us to desire more and more until we gets until it gets its goal and its goal is our distraction so my dear friends don't be fooled by the temptations like the wolf we can get away with it for a while eventually however its true character is revealed temptations lead to sin and sin leads to death or destruction so temptation gets its power by persuading us to believe that we will be happy if we follow it or we follow the temptation the power of temptation is the prospect that it will make us happier today's gospel reading tells us that the spirit drove jesus out into the desert to be tempted by satan it says that jesus passed the test and overcame the temptation but my dear friends satan never rests just as he talked to jesus satan is also tempting us the only difference between now in the biblical times is that the devil has updated his tactics the devil is always making an upgrade of his tactics parang television black and white nagisan caller tv lcd tv and led tv and now we have smart tv or android tv now the devil uses the popular isms to tempt us to lure us away from god so the simple terms isms isms are those theories and doctrines the world wants us to believe as the source of our happiness and what are these issues first we have individualism second secularism then relativism materialism and lastly commercialism [Music] my dear friends these are the modern ways used by the devil to lure us away from god or to pull us away from god to break our relationship with god there is a need for us to understand all these isms because this is now what the devil is using us to break our relationship from god so first we have individualism so here satan tells us that we must give utmost importance to ourselves to what we want in short the devil is promoting self-centeredness individualism according to pope francis favors a lifestyle that weakens the development and stability of personal relationships and it distorts family bonds because family is a community if every member of the family lives with individualism there could be no more community inside the house and family second is secularism here satan tells us that worldly concerns are more important than spiritual concerns i don't need to go to church what can i get from it secularism denies that we are created in the aims and likeness of god and that we are meant for god in his kingdom so this is how secularism divides or hinders us to have intimate relationship with god third is relativism here satan tells us that whatever makes us happy whatever satisfies our wants and desires is good and must be pursued so we create our own standard just like lying lying is good because it saves me from embarrassment you are making a standard that lying is good because it saves you from embarrassment for you lying is good but in the standard of god it is never um considered as good so relativism according to pope benedict the 16th does not recognize anything as definitive in his ultimate standard consists solely of one's ego and desires next is materialism here satan tells us that our word as a person depends on our material wealth and possessions thus we must have more and more so i don't care if many people are dying because of hunger so long as i am content with what i have and i have many things in my store room stories materialism makes us believe that happiness and security depends on having more or accumulating more goods so this is nothing but a lie that leads to unhappiness so lastly consumerism here satan tells us that we must always have the latest the newest the best and the most of what money can buy consumerism according to pope francis is the desolation and anguish born of a complacent yet covetous heart the favorites pursuit of privileged pleasures and a blunted conscience my dear brothers and sisters lent must be a time for us to listen more attentively to the lord in listening to the lord we can overcome this new tactics of the devil in pulling us out away from god when individualism says the most important is yourself jesus is also saying whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself take up his cross and follow me when secularism says seek your happiness and worldly things jesus is saying seek first the kingdom of god in all these things will be given to you besides when relativism says the basis of truth is what is good for you but jesus is saying i am the way the truth and the life when materialism says the more material things you have the happier you will be but jesus is saying blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven when consumerism says shop and buy till you drop and die but jesus is saying take care to guard against all greed for though one may be rich one's life does not consist of possessions so my dear friends let us listen to the lord jesus more attentively to overcome temptations please arise i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true light begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnated by the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to just the leaving and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who was spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of saints and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen heavenly father renew us in your covenant of mercy that lead us to everlasting life with humble hearts indeed holy o lord the fountable holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the jew fall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of
