[Music] bye [Music] bye [Music] so [Music] good morning and a warm warm welcome to all of you here gathered and those who are following us online and on kbc we thank you for coming now we have started the journey of lent which is the 40 days of prayer and fasting and i hope you are doing exactly that let us work together in prayer this is an election year we are not worried that we have been called by the lord to pray and so the prayer guides will help us in matters of prayer and that's why this month we'll be looking at the place of leadership we have the parish the pcc i mean the agm coming on the 20th it's good to reflect on matters of leadership again basic basing it on haggai chapter 1 from verse 5. let us pray but god our heavenly father we thank you for this morning and for your grace that we have each received we thank you for the care that you take care of us in our going out and are coming out back every day so we gather here lord in your name and we thank you for the holy spirit who has assembled us and we pray that the purpose for which you called us here will be accomplished may our worship be acceptable before you may our prayers be heard by you and may the holy spirit minister to each one of us this is our prayer in jesus name amen please be seated for the introit [Music] i will see thy great mercies [Music] [Music] oh lord [Music] is [Music] i will see is [Music] my [Music] oh lord [Music] oh [Music] [Laughter] [Music] huh [Applause] brethren today is the first sunday in lent lent is a season of preparation for the great celebration of the resurrection of jesus christ it is also a season where jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days to prepare himself for his public ministry while in the wilderness jesus was tempted by the devil and overcame him lent is a time of to contemplate our own hope of resurrection by identifying and welcoming temptations that try to draw us away from god using the weapon of prayer fasting and arms giving against the devil we can orient ourselves towards god i therefore invite you to stand as we sing christians doth thou see them [Music] this is [Music] the truth [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] with me [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] me [Music] peace [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh is [Music] is [Music] [Applause] we have come together the people of god drawn by his spirit longing for his word to praise the holy name of the lord to share his glorious news of grace to pray for the needs of the world and to rejoice in his love and be sent in his peace we are heirs of the father renewed in the spirit if we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us if we confess our sins in repentance and trust god is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins so let us confess them to our father we call to mind the things that we have done the sins we have committed through a mission our commission and ask the lord for his forgiveness today together eternal father god of ancestors before your power all things tremble but through your son we approach your throne we have done wrong and neglected to do right our sins were heavily on our hearts lord have mercy count them not against us grant us the joy of forgiveness enlighten our hearts with the glory of christ who died and rose again for us amen the god and father of our lord jesus christ rejoices at repentance and declares his acceptance the dead are the dead are alive the lost are found his goodness and mercy will follow you all the days of your life and you live in the house of the lord forever and ever amen our father what in heaven hallowed be your name your kingdom come your will be done on other cities in heaven give us this day our daily bread forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever amen jesus was in the wilderness 40 days tempted jesus christ was full of sorrow as he wept over jerusalem for her failure to repent teach us the humility to look at ourselves by the light of the cross and be moved to repent of all our wrongdoings for you delight in restored fellowship through him who plunged the depths that we might be raised to the highest glory through jesus christ our savior amen the collect for ash wednesday almighty god of god you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of those who are penitent create and make in us and the contrite heart that we wealthy lamenting of our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness may receive from you the god of all mercy perfect permission and forgiveness through jesus christ your son our lord who is alive and reigns with you amen lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy in confidence we join with christians throughout the centuries and throughout the world today as we affirm our faith in the words of the apostles creed together i believe in god the we are called the friends of god not because of anything that we have done but because of his redemptive death and resurrection we are called to be his friends and so we believe it we confess it to be true that we are your friends through our brother jesus christ and the blood he shared for us we join with david in psalm 23 that truly you are our shepherd [Music] and we confess that in all the days of our life will dwell in your presence other challenges we may be facing at this time whether it is illness whether it is family challenges that we could be being the time of lent it is good for us to be and as i go through the litany could you just merciful god so to sit for the national exams in march oh lord hear our prayer for they may rest under your caring arms as they face this difficult and trying moment in their lives oh lord hear our prayer that you may reward their hard work with success oh lord hear our prayer that you may bless them with good health and peace of mind as they seat for their exams they may be strengthened with your love grace and mercy we also pray for their teachers and fellow students who are part of the community of learning that they may be a source of comfort and encouragement to those who are sitting their final exams we pray for the ministry of education as they disseminate the examination papers especially in counties with unrest and limited resources they may always use their wisdom and strength for the growth and development of the education sector in our country that you may give them grace to nurture the future generations or that this community with love and wisdom let me request if those students could be here or their parents we just stand as we dedicate them to god let us pray oh lord jesus you are the great and the good shepherd of the ship we pray that you look with favor upon this year's candidates embrace them with your arms of mercy pour on them the riches of your blessings and fill them with your manifold gift of grace provide them with courage and faith to read understand and interpret the examination questions set before them help them to be composed and accurate in putting down what they have learned and as we join them lord this morning in prayer either they are here present or away in school as their parents and guardians we uphold them you have promised that our children the children of the believers will not be the last but the fast so we pray for favor on all our children we ask that you may stretch forth your hand upon them wherever they may be take away the fear and the anxiety that comes save them from any interference that comes during the times of exams give them good health that they may be able to work complete their exams in good health and remind us as their parents and update on the ctc i know canon john did part of it last sunday and we were very happy to hear the good progress but we need to do something so that the work can continue so allow me to be quick today announcing also the bands of philip inguta akatu of osan's cathedral nairobi and philomena one going away of aipca kaole this is the second time of announcing then the bands of martin bushy mwangi and emi ia akim both of our saints cathedral this is the first time of announcing if you know any just course or impairment kindly do communicate to us all this information is available in the website that is the tinscamp that is happening from the 14th to the 18th of this month the boys initiation camp which is 4th to the 14th of april the ropes 2022 registration is ongoing the teens confirmation classes all that information kindly go to the website but also the clergy are there after the service the mothers union agm is on the 19th and we encourage the the women to pick their nomination forms the cathedral agm will be on the 20th of march at 1 pm immediately after the service we'll prepare ourselves so that we can begin on time it will be both physical and virtual the same way we did last year we encourage you to identify people who are godly people who are committed people who are mature in their faith but people also who are christian professionals who can serve the cathedral in the parish council kindly collect the forms during the week at the provost uh office and today you can also collect them from reverend johnson and let us nominate our people for the same the following information is available in the website it has all to do with children on 11th which is next saturday the children will go 11th is when it's of friday yes on friday they will go to saint nicholas parents teach your children to donate food to such children then release them to go and see children who may not be as privileged as they are so make donations and i know this information it has been sent to you through text make donations let your children know the essence of giving so kindly whether they are books whether they are toiletries whether they are foods whatever you may want to give then friday uh bring them let them go to saint nicholas and spend a day there the virtual alpha uh kids starts on the 21st of march uh it's available it's for 4 to 12 years the interperson vocational bible bible school starts on the 1st or 28th to the 1st of april all this information is there the one day toddler camp that information again is available uh the brigade training the children come stabilized we will now open the 9 30 service so soon we'll be telling you about that but be patient for now we have had good meetings with the contractors and the progress is fantastic so we'll be able to tell you when we'll start the 9 30 service but in the meantime during the week monday through to friday we have the daily morning holy communion service here at 7. then at 10 we have the senior citizen holy communion service and 5 30 every wednesday we have prayer and healing let me say something on the ctc as anchor paul comes canon john did give us a highlight of how far we have come and we are above now 95 of this building but for if you listen to him carefully we have only done half the work because a building is just a building but what we need now to invest greatly in is now the software the equipping of this facility and i want to request you kindly consider giving something special this time towards the children when we started this building some people felt um this is impossible even some told me on my face provost this is too big of a dream but i met somebody one time coming to the office and he he told me a testimony that he had given a pledge which he thought was beyond his ability but god in his mercy helped him and i don't know whether he's here because this is a true testimony god in his mercy blessed the works of his hands and within a very short time he was able to clear so that day he was coming to clear his pledge god is not a debtor to anyone they that are faithful to god god is faithful to them and so even as we ask you to commit and pledge towards the ctc don't just do it do it prayerfully ask the lord don't just give according to your ability even go beyond and trust god to bless you so that you can bless the works of your hands uncle paul hi everyone i strategically stood there so that you can admire my t-shirt yeah so the work the construction part of the children and teen center is pretty much almost there we're almost there in another 15 16 weeks we shall be occupying the facility then the real work begins the real work to reach out to a billion children for christ well it's been going on but then it begins in honest and so today we will be asking you to do three things we do ask you to pledge to do three things and if you'd allow me kindly repeat after me we're going to ask you to pledge that to bring your talents your giftings and your networks connections so everybody say bring we will be asking you to commit to pray and fast at least once a month everybody say commit we shall be asking us to pledge to give generously towards the completion of the building and also the running of programs everybody say give so the words are bring commit and give together bring starts with a b commit starts with a c and gives us with a g that is b c g every one of us here has a bcg vaccination on your left hand see i'm clever even you and that bcg is supposed to prevent you by its vaccination against tuberculosis we are not asking you to to to to vaccinate children against tuberculosis but we all know that our children are growing in a difficult environment that we will need to vaccinate them again as the schemes of the enemy and in the name of jesus they will be able to stand up like zerubbabel and offer leadership in a country in a time when things are going down south so what we then have done is we prepared a bookmark for every one of us and in this bookmark you'll be making the following commitment this is a prayer you'll be saying my ctc pledge in the year 2022 will be dear lord you have called me a priest in your word this year 2022 use me and coppol just like you used haggai to help children and teenagers in my generation consider their ways i pledge to bring everybody say bring their talents and gifts you've given me to support the children and teens programs i pledge to commit everybody say commit to pray and fast at least once a month we will be setting aside every first friday of the month to be a day of prayer and fasting dedicated the ctc and finally we will pledge to give generously everybody say give by december 2022 so you will feel in these the ushers are going around and most of us have already received these please fill it in you'll also fill in the tear off part after that you're going to tear it off and then drop it in the basket in the offering basket or you can leave it at the on your pews or you can go to the ctc desk and give these as your pledge commitment may the lord bless you as you go out in the name of the lord committing to bring yourselves to his work committing to pray and committing to give generously to his work amen and the rest after tearing off the rest you keep it in your bible it will remind you on how to pray isn't it so this is a bookmark this is my tare of to give my commitment uncle paul you can have it uh with that uh during the offerings you will also have a moment where you can feel it you can feel it even now but just pray about it and just wait during offerings i'll make a special prayer as we trust the lord because this is not just we are not just doing it we are doing it for the lord's sake and will will become will suddenly be destroyed without remedy the russia's thrive the people rejoice when the wicked rule the people groan a man who loves his dumb brings joy to his father but a companion of prostitutes squanders his world by justice our king gives a can gives a country stability but one who is greedy for bribes tears it down whoever flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for his feet an evil man is snagged by his own sin but a righteous one can sing and be glad the russians care about the justice for the poor but the wicked have no such concern mokas start up a city but the wise the wicked thrives so does sin but the righteous will see their downfall discipline your son and he will give you peace he will bring delight to your soul but when there is no revelation the people cast off restraint but the much blessed is he the lord this is the word of the lord the second reading comes from the past peter chapter 5 beginning to read at verse 1. past peter chapter 5 beginning to read at verse 1. the elders among you appeal as a fellow elder a witness of christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed be shepherds of god's flock that is under your care serving as overseas not because you must but because you are willing as god wants you to be not greedy for money but eager to serve not loading it over those entrusted to you by being examples to the flock and when the chief shepherd appears you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away young men in the same way be submissive to those who are older all of you clothe yourselves with humility towards one another because god opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble humble yourselves therefore under god's mighty hand that he may lift you up in due time cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you be self-controlled and alert your enemy the devil prowls around like a ruined lion looking for someone to devour resist him standing firm in the face because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings and the god of all grace who called you to his eternal glory in christ after you have suffered a we stand jehovah our lord our king we come before you now we sit at your feet dear lord and desire to hear your word use media master only as a vessel a vessel of honor that you may speak directly to your people that they may hear your voice good shepherd and i pray dear lord even as we leave this place later on we may be rejuvenated and renewed in our spirit for it is in jesus name we pray and believe amen you may be seated good afternoon and praise the lord for the last two months or so our focus has been on the book of haggai and today we look at the role of leadership as god desires it to be now god not only uses priests and prophets to accomplish his purposes he is not limited in terms of his vessels or servants to do his will he also uses men and women in authority we read in haggai chapter 2 verse 20 to 23 the word of the lord came to haggai a second time on the 24th day of the month tell the ruber bell governor of judah that i am going to shake the heavens and the earth i will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of foreign kingdoms i will overthrow chariots and their drivers horses and their riders will fall each by the sword of his brother verse 23 says on that day declares the lord almighty i will take you my servant the rubabel son of shaltiel declares the lord and i will make you like my signet ring for i have chosen you declares the lord almighty so from that portion of scripture you realize that god calls relu zerubbabel who is a political leader he is governor of judah he calls him his servant which is normally a preserve of the priests if you hear one refer to the term servant of god or man of god or even now woman of god you'll most likely think of possibly the provost or the assistant provost or probably members of the clergy but we have a situation here whereby god is referring to a politician a governor of judah as his servant so then what is the role of leadership in accomplishing god's purposes if you are to walk on the streets of nairobi and you are to ask kenyans to define who a leader is and i can assure you 75 percent of them will link leadership to politicians it's like we don't have leaders in church we don't have leaders in the corporate world we don't have leaders in the social circles the only definition of an average kenyan concerning leaders or leadership is actually what a politician does now it's understandable because leadership is defined in terms of the people who have the greatest influence in our life people who can influence our everyday standard of living it's the politicians who run government that come up with economic policies that will either ensure we have more money in our pockets or not it is the politicians in parliament who enact low laws rules and regulations that regulate our everyday life so it's understandable why we refer to leaders as just politicians however africa's understanding of leadership is somewhat misguided if you own a build vehicle and drive into the parking space of a mall or any other social place chances are the watchman who will show you where to park will show you the parking slot will salute you vigorously and call you what kion goes so indeed if you intend to be a political leader in kenya it is like the script has been written and the following conditions have to be fulfilled number one you must own and drive a high range vehicle preferably a four by four secondly you must construct a big house in the village preferably a six bedroom house or even more and thirdly you must throw parties and splash money on everyone that you come across then you qualify to be a muhashimur in other words the new kid on the block is the one who displays his wealth to all ancestry irrespective of he of how he or she acquired the wealth the person qualifies to be a kyongozi and therefore our next muhishi muah now who qualifies to be a leader then in accordance with the word of god if you walked into this sanctuary this morning and the vajra called you aside and told you look our organist is unable to come today to play the organ and therefore he requests you who has no background whatsoever in music you've never punched those keys on the keyboard of an organ he requests you to volunteer to play the organ will you do so simple it's common sense now you ask yourself why then in africa do we elect people who have no background whatsoever in leadership you know just because they splash money around that is the only qualification that we look for someone who has no understanding whatsoever of the public finance management act who has no understanding of the public procurement act possibly in his mind or her mind he or she is only thinking of how to acquire more wealth for himself or herself the family and the generations to come these people are not viongosi the bible says in proverbs chapter 29 and verse 2 when the righteous eye in authority the people rejoice but when the evil man is ruler grief comes on the people that's the first qualification for a true leader in accordance with the word of god is that one person who is righteous and upright because such people bring happiness they bring joy and peace to society the people's physical social and also spiritual needs are well taken care of and they flourish even the animal kingdom understands this principle very well if you have domestic animals you have a dog or a cat or you have a few sheep or cows in your homestead if you start mistreating them you can rest assured they will run away and look for another master who will be able to take care of their needs so the animal kingdom understands this principle very well but somewhat for us it still remains a challenge secondly in accordance with the word of god the person the word of god calls a leader it is a calling from god himself in haggai chapter 2 verse 23 god calls the ruba bell my servant and he goes further to say this i have chosen you that is what the lord almighty declares so when god calls you into leadership his voice is always very clear there is a push to some extent a discomfort until you fulfill his desire now i know there are quite a number of view here because this church is comprised of people of various professional backgrounds and i know some of you may be vying for the positions that will fall vacant in august i want to ask you a question you who wants to stand do you feel strongly that god is calling you into this ministry do you feel just like zerubbabel that he has chosen you so that you take care of the needs of kenyans at the various political levels that exist in our country it's a calling now if zerubbabel needed any other signal of his importance in god's plan he got it in a very powerful imagery the second part of verse 23 says i will take you my servant zerubbabel son of shaltier and i will make you like my signature now in those days the king's ring was actually his signature whenever he would give a decree and if it was in writing it had to be sealed with his ring so that it can come into force when god calls the ruber bell and tells him i will make you like my signaturing he's saying you will be invested with my authority you will act for me you will speak for me you will lead for me and on my behalf i give you my power and my authority for i have chosen you god chooses his servants to work in various fields he does not limit his work to only the spiritual aspect of his ship but also the other aspects that affect people on their everyday life thirdly if god has called you do not fear taking that step of faith in verse 21 to 22 in order for haggai in order for god to assure us aruba bell sorry that this is his work he declared through haggai speak to zerubbabel governor of judah saying i will shake the heavens and the earth and i will overthrow the throne of kingdoms and i will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen and i will overthrow the chariots and those that ride in them and the horses and their riders shall calm down everyone by the sword of his brother there are three strong emphasis in these words first no force of nature no human power and no human government can stand against god you look at history even ussr the fact that they denied god what eventually happened to this empire it came tumbling down they are trying to revive it as much as they can now but so long as they are against god they will not succeed the word of god says heaven and earth will be shaken royal thrones and foreign kingdoms will fall second no weapons be they biological chemical or nuclear weapons whichever weapons you're thinking of not even strategies battle skills can defeat god he says chariots horses drivers and riders will fall third god will make this happen again and again god says he will do it god speaks repeatedly of what he will do leaders who are chosen by god know that they are accomplishing god's plan and follow his lead constantly now what most of us do not realize is that god has called us into leadership by virtue of the gifts he has imparted on us and the skills we have acquired over time you could be a sunday school teacher here and that is a very high calling by the way shaping the mind the thinking of those small boys and girls to be used by god in the future this is very critical because these are the ones who will take over the leadership of the church these are the young people who will take over leadership in the country and occupy various professions you are a leader called to shape the thinking of these small children you could be a mother timothy a bishop in the early church came to faith through his mother eunice and his grandmother lois and was greatly influential in the church he rose through the ranks to become a bishop at a very young age and this is as a result of the seeds of faith that were planted in him by his mother and his grandmother you could be a grandmother here you feel exhausted you feel tired you no longer want to take care of those little children god still requires your leadership you could be a mom don't take it for granted at all in any way it's a special calling it's a leadership position that god has given you to have influence on your children you could be a father the bible calls you a high priest you are in charge of your family you even have authority by the way in accordance with the word of god over your wife over your spouse this is in accordance with the word of god you know you keep on complaining on a daily basis concerning your wife do you know what the word of god says washer washer with the word that's what the bible says continuously wash her purify her with the word because your wisdom is limited but she cannot stand the conviction of the holy spirit so you wash her purify her clean heart and then the bible says present her as a beautiful pride bride to yourself so you're actually doing it to yourself when you keep on speaking the word of god into her life but if you married one who is not founded on the word of god then yes you have trouble and even you as a man if you don't know the weapon that god has given you because you have not yet given your life to christ then you will be overwhelmed with the situation in your family god calls you out as a high priest a leader he calls you out to take care of those little children and bring them up nurture them in his ways pray with them in the evening read the word of god with them even as you are dropping them in the morning to school talk to them concerning the ways of the lord so you are a leader you could be a professional in a certain field and therefore a missionary in that organization with a lot of influence over some people but they see as a rubber bell in you god servant fulfilling god's plan oh are while you can be a stumbling block until one does not desire even to wake up and go to work because when they think of you when the image of you comes to their mind they see not a shepherd but an agent of the evil one as a church we currently have a vision to reach out to a billion children as well explained by uncle paul and the provost through the ctc project so what is your role in fulfilling this mandate do you desire to see our children influence the future generation by investing in this project a place where children can come and find refuge run away running away from home because of the situation that obtains their possibility on the streets but they come here and somehow they find peace and joy and comfort in their life because that is what the ctc project is all about the ruba bell and haggai were called upon to rebuild the temple we too are rebuilding or building the temple of god through this project take it seriously when provost calls upon you to give because it's an investment in the kingdom of god and jesus says you'll never go wrong whenever you invest in the kingdom of god god is calling us this afternoon to reflect on our ways to listen to his still quiet voice and to do his will africa is in serious need of righteous leaders do not fear the ways of the world do not conform to the pattern of this world if he has chosen you put your entire trust in him you should strategize skillfully and work diligently because the people yarn for your leadership the graduates who are tamarking in thousands out there they yearn for your leadership some of them have had to result to hawking staff they are not making news of the education they have acquired even up to university level they yearn for you they are looking forward to you eventually taking over the leadership in this country and bringing hope to their life the hungry the sick the street children and the numbers are increasing on a daily basis they are looking for a good shepherd to show them the way that they may succeed in life god desires to use you as a righteous person to unlock africa's potential stand out to be counted as his own in the leadership space and i share this in the name of god the father god the son and god the holy spirit amen wow that was beautifully done isn't it very calmly yet deeply thank you very much shadrach for allowing god to use you it's time for us to give our offerings and tides and just remind you that god is not a debtor to anyone and i don't just ask you to give because i must no it is because god wants us to influence as leaders the that gives their tithes and offerings that you may remember them and give them a breakthrough in everything that they do that in the midst of this economy your favor will follow them and father even as we give our pledges we don't give out of what we have but we give out of faith putting our full trust in you and we thank you that you have been faithful you have shown us faithfulness we started this facility in your name and even during the time of covet we have seen you supply us with resources according to your riches in heaven so even our lord analyzation of the great dream may your holy
