amen by the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god our father and the fellowship of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit good morning and welcome brothers and sisters this first sunday of lent the gospel jesus invites us to reflect on our mission but in fulfilling god's mission to confront our own conflicts our own failures and weaknesses that are obstacles to fulfilling god's will and god's mission we allow those obstacles to be presented to the lord for healing for pardon be grateful for this lent that we open ourselves to experience god's infinite healing love and mercy a god who offers hospitality who welcomes who receives who accepts in order to touch heal and change we pray together i confess almighty god thank you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts in what i have done and what i failed to do through my fault through through my own angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for the lord may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us all our sins heal us and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy [Music] lord have mercy christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy [Music] lord have mercy [Music] let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy land that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in a unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people the priest shall take the paneer from your hand and lay it before the altar of the lord your god then in the sight of the lord your god you must make this pronouncement my father was a wandering aramian he went down into egypt to find refuge there few in numbers but there he became a nation great mighty and strong the egyptians ill-treated us they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us but we called on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toil and our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hands and outstretched arm with great terror and with signs and wonders he brought us here and gave us this land a land where milk and honey flow here then i bring the first fruits of the produce of the soil that you lord have given me you must then lay them before the lord your god and bow down in the sight of the lord your god the word of the lord [Music] be with me in my distress [Music] be with me o lord in my [Music] be with me o lord in my distress [Music] he who dwells in the shelter of the most high and abides in the shed of the almighty says to the lord my refuge my stronghold my god in whom i trust [Music] distress be with me [Music] upon you no evil shall fall no plague approach where you dwell for you has he commanded his angels to keep you in all your ways be with me [Music] is they shall bear you upon your hands lest you strike your foot against a stone on the lion and the viper you will thread and tremble the young lion and the dragon be with me o lord in my distress be with me o lord in my distress [Music] his love he set on me so i will rescue him protect him for he knows my name when he calls i shall answer i am with you i will save him in distress and give him glory be with me distress [Music] in my distress [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans scripture says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jew and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many ask for his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] lord jesus [Music] man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of god [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for 40 days during the time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell the stone to turn into a loaf jesus replied scripture says man does not live on bread alone then leading him to a height the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all this power and glory of these kingdoms for it has been committed to me and i give it to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall all be yours but jesus answered him scripture says you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here for scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone jesus answered him it has been said you must not put the lord your god to the test having exhausted all these ways of tempting him the devil left him to return at the appointed time the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ i don't know if any one of you have lived in the desert or at least visited and you know it's very harsh conditions you know cold extreme cold hot extreme hot and that's why you have to cover yourself up because to protect yourself from the weather [Music] and this is the context of our gospel today the desert harsh conditions it represents the wilderness the battle of good and evil takes place okay all comfort support delusions stripped away you know it's like the scaffoldings that you use for building buildings after you build you remove the scaffoldings you must be alert to survive also sensitive your own limitations possibilities which are limited then in order to survive you have to confront the conflict in the depths of your being okay you wouldn't need to you need to live you need to more than survive and in that process clarifying motivations choices and actions okay why are you living for and so the three temptations in the desert today that we heard jesus confronts the choices of his life as he learns to be the messiah in luke's gospel the temptation takes place after the baptism of jesus so after baptism in jordan jesus goes to pray in the desert okay and you remember what happened in baptism they came out of the water the heavens opened the spirit came down as a form of a dove and the words you are my son the beloved my favor rests on you okay or you are my son with whom i am well pleased keep that in mind so how will this son live this mission of god and so each temptation suggests to him to take the easy part to do things the easy way why do things difficult when you can do it easy okay so choose the easy way because you are the son of god you're powerful anyway right so three times the devil tempts jesus if you are the son of god if you are the son of god if you are the son of god it's almost as the devil is goading him yeah you are the son of god word so therefore you'll be able to do all these things easy easy busy as they say and it's very subtle they appear to be good let's look at each one of them after 40 days of fasting she is extremely hungry after not eating for one day i am very hungry 40 days no food so why not use your miraculous powers for just that one moment of self-interest to fulfill your hunger makes sense right makes perfect sense jesus said no powers his powers are to be used only for the good of others at the service of others and that will already be his team for the rest of his life not for self-interest we can reflect and ask how do we use power lots of examples in our country today how power is abused and manipulated second temptation very much related possession of political authority and power again jesus messiah son of god so naturally everything should belong to him right so how should he gain this authority and power by worshiping the devil who claims to be able to give it or by waiting to receive it from the hands of god now look at how bold the evil spirit is okay saying all this is yours all you need to do is just worship me and i'll give it to you here and now immediately [Music] okay claiming that it's all his the first suggestion worship me it all be yours it's easy immediate here and now like many things we like now you know it has to be now or it has to be yesterday okay and then you become powerful and jesus again is outlining what he will do later he will say this is how the world uses power and authority to oppress in a very violent way and he will say among the gentiles referring to those who are not converted um you use power and authority to oppress to manipulate to deceive to keep people down luke chapter 22 verse 25 so the alternative to this form of power which is wait to receive it in the hands of god it is to choose the way the authority wealth possession is to serve others for the common good not to dominate not to oppress but to lift people okay and that again in in chapter 22 verse 26-27 when he's teaching the disciples he said among you my disciples this should not happen power authority is to serve to go down and he will give the example at the washing of the feet so therefore this thing to worship god alone is to allow all humanity to feel at home in god's house to experience god's compassion god's hospitality this is the way god's son must choose and for jesus to worship god means to love humanity to open god's arms to all of humanity we sometimes think worship god in the sky in the heavens to be solemn to be reverent we bow down a hundred times at the name of jesus how do we treat each other do we worship god in in people i don't mean bow down and worship people but how do we treat people with reverence with the same dignity that all of us share it's nice to worship god here cool and cozy and comfortable but when we get out there how do we worship god for jesus it is not separate the final temptation throw yourself down from the temple again of course you are the son of god you will be protected the angels will hold you you will not even be heard by the stones and the devil quotes scriptures psalm 91 the devil said he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you they will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against the stone that's from psalm 91 verse 11 and 12 so beware when you quote scriptures and it will be sensational because when people see that you're falling and the angels holding you and you are not hurt [Music] it will be easy for people to believe right [Music] big drama it will be good to launch the messianic career of jesus in this way but jesus refuses again the easy sensational way refuses putting god to the test and his way will be walk to jerusalem take the way of the cross suffer rejection shame humiliation and then god will raise him up from the dead and make him the lord of all creation god will give him all of creation god will entrust all creation to him as opposed to devil giving it's it's taking possession it's grabbing power okay we are familiar with this we all do it in the church in the world and so from the battle in the desert jesus chooses to walk the ordinary path of human life to fulfill his mission as son of god no special favors as son of god we're so used to being entitled to be favored a whole system political system is built on this entitlement for jesus no easy way out he will share god's infinite hospitality show god's infinite hospitality by obediently entering fully in the pain and evil of the world to change it from within [Music] and restore humanity into its original goodness and that's who we are now jesus doesn't reject the world the world is all created by god so it's good when you say dead to the world it is dead to the values of the world as it's presented in the temptations of jesus okay not that the world itself is bad how can the world be bad when god created in other in other words you're saying god created what is bad okay so when jesus said rejecting of the world it's the values the attitudes the behaviors habits that takes us away takes us apart from enjoying from receiving this hospitality of god and sharing it with others that's what he rejects okay in our original goodness and this is what we are journeying to celebrate at easter at the resurrection when all is restored when jesus becomes lord of all he's given us back our dignity that we lost because of sin because of rejecting refusing resisting god [Music] that's the restoration we are preparing to experience and that's why lent is a time when we are invited to go deeply into this desert with jesus share both his conflict and his victory to feel something of our own weakness temptations failures not to run away from it to face it we all have it men women children youth okay but and to confront them in the depths of our hearts but not only that but to confront them with the knowledge that our dependence on god who is infinitely loving and merciful okay we can confront it but it can become an ego trip a prideful journey okay um i me and my i want to clean myself up the right way jesus invites is to confront it in the merciful love infinite hospitality of god so always in relationship with god only if we do this we will grow in genuine conversion and we participate fully in sharing god's hospitality with others because that is what we have received from god that that is what our prayer fasting and arms giving is meant to do clear the space to allow us to experience god's hospitality and that is what we bring to the world as mission and let us stand to profess our faith in this god who loves us i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and jesus christ the only son our lord was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered was crucified died and was buried he descended to the hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and visited the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of the saints the forgiveness of sins the as we recall the 40 days our lord spent in the desert in conflict with the powers of evil we ask our heavenly father to be with us at all times helping us to confront and receive the temptations and grow in choosing what is right and good in love and service of god and others for the church that led by the spirit to embrace prayer fasting and almsgiving we may learn anew that we do not live by bread alone let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who are afflicted sick or poor that god may be their refuge and fortress giving his angels command to guide heal and deliver them let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all gathered here that we as individuals and as a community may learn to repent and turn away from sin with all our hearts and take this opportunity during the season of land to be reconciled to the father let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the pope's intentions for resources to build a church and all other needs of our parish for our own needs and all the intentions offered this month let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we continue to pray for those who suffer in war and violence disasters places like ukraine myanmar even different parts of the middle east in africa war and violence is not the answer may peace and justice prevail may leaders recognize acknowledge the self-interests and power and put down weapons in order to build to create to restore we pray to the lord r [Music] god a loving father we have begun our lenten journey of prayer fasting almsgiving stay with us in our trials and temptations and deliver us from everything that keeps us away from you and from evil one we make our prayer through christ our lord amen [Music] [Music] the life is our hearts to lost [Music] your presence [Music] loving [Music] to see [Music] um [Music] give us [Music] me [Music] pray my dear sisters and brothers that these your sacrifice and mind may be acceptable to god almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and good of all his holy church give us the right dispositions and attitudes o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord you are indeed holy and to be glorified o god who love the human race and who always walk with us on the journey of life blessed indeed is your son present in our midst when we are gathered by his love and when as once for the disciples so now for us he opens the scriptures and breaks the bread therefore father most merciful we ask that you send forth your holy spirit to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ on the day before he was to suffer on the night of the last supper he took bread and said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice gave you thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of fate save the savior of the world for by your cross and resurrect you have set us free therefore holy fathers we celebrate the memorial of christ your son our savior whom you led through this passion and death on the cross to the glory of the resurrection and whom you have seated at your right hand we proclaim the work of your love until it comes again and we offer you the bread of life and chalice of blessing look with favor on the oblation of your church in which we show forth the paschal sacrifice of christ that has been handed on
