[Music] in the glorious mysteries we contemplate the triumph of jesus in his resurrection the birth of the church with the coming of the holy spirit and how jesus took his mother into heaven and crowned her as its queen whoever shall call me blessed they will be blessed immaculate mary mother of god blessed are you you show us the way mary our mother teach us to pray in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of god the like tongues of fire an ancient antiphon in the prayer of the church describes what happened this is the day of pentecost alleluia today the holy spirit appeared to the disciples in the form of fire and gave them his special gifts he sent them into the world to proclaim that whoever believes and is baptized will be saved we pray that we may experience the fullness of our baptism through the power only her soul but her body as well god needed it to fulfill his plan of salvation for jesus to become man he had for nine months to become inseparably one flesh with his mother she is the flesh and blood of jesus the holy one whom the lord will not allow to see corruption so when her life is over she has taken body and soul into heaven under her protective mantle all christians gather to form heaven mary's whole life was availed in a mystery of faith even her son will not lift this veil when she is blessed by a woman in the crowd blessed are those who hear the word of god and keep it he says now jesus lifts the veil and brightness streams from mary's crown to light up all the hidden years of washing cooking sewing sweeping caring for her own and dealing with her neighbors it was all for jesus in her jesus has raised up the lowly from being looked on as of no importance she is now queen of heaven lord may our insignificant lives and our quiet and hidden service of you form a does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart this is the word of faith we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised them from the dead you will be saved for one believes where the heart and soul is justified and one confesses with a mouth and soul is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between greek and jew the same lord as lord of all and reaching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the everything from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become great jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you save then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with your hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord james james saint james and saint james the responsoria psalm says be with me lord when i am in be with me lord when i am in trouble and i was saying that maybe it should be with me lord always not only when i am in trouble be with me lord especially when i am in trouble we need god in good times and in bad but it is moment of difficulty that our faith is put to the test so it is right to say be with me lord when i am in trouble so that the lord will help us to deliver us the first reading recounts the experiences that the people of israel went through in the desert the challenges the pain the affliction persecution from the hands of the egyptians but now they were living in a free land so they do not want to forget those days it was the lord himself who delivered them so their first fruits they bring it before the lord as an offering they never forgot the goodness of the lord indeed the lord was with them when they were in trouble and the second reading concludes by saying that for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved so indeed when we are in trouble and we call upon the lord the lord will save us the lord will deliver us so this is a powerful but simple prayer which we can be saying from time to time be with me lord when i am in trouble because the troubles will come the troubles are already around but the good news is that the lord is with us the emmanuel is with us to help us to save us to strengthen us and we must constantly call upon him in the gospel reading as we heard according to luke chapter 4 1-13 basically it's about the temptation of christ we are told that jesus was filled with the holy spirit in the midst of this there was temptation so don't think that because you are filled with the holy spirit or because we are christians we should not experience temptations no i want to believe that precisely because we are christians that is why we go through a lot of temptations a lot of trials for our faith to be tested to show whether indeed we are on the lord's side and so jesus was in the desert for 40 days and 40 days already reminding us of the season of length length if we want to add the sundays then we are going to have 46 days because there are six sundays in length but when you take away the six sundays then indeed we have 40 days of length because on sundays as you already know we do not fast it is the day of the lord and so as i did for the first month i give them assignment when you go home you take your calendar and start counting from ash wednesday one two three then take away the sundays and let's see if you indeed you will get 40 days if you get 40 days well and would if you get 39 then come and let's look at the calendar again maybe there will be a problem somewhere so this is the assignment please try and do it so that remember that the 40 days of length excludes sundays and he was there to be tempted we are told that he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry he didn't eat so i've been telling my friends that when you are fasting and you drink water you haven't broken your fast some people out there view that when you drink water you have broken your fast please catholics i'm telling you when you are fasting and you drink water water doesn't break your fast because water is not food water is not food but if you go and take celes through telly and the rest you are broken your fast if you take that you broke your past only water because you are told that he ate nothing and he was hungry so some bibles was they didn't say he was tasty we don't eat water we drink water but for telling him no no you drink about it they have food so when you drink water so you come fast and please take water you haven't broken your fast and listen temptation jesus himself went through it so definitely we will also experience it and i told you last friday that temptation per se or by itself is neither positive nor negative temptation is neutral it is what comes out of it after the temptation that is when we say that the person has sinned or not so when we are tempted and we succumb to the temptations then we have sinned but when we prevail over the temptation then we say that we've won we've won we've defeated the evil one and usually we are tempted based on what i say maybe two scenarios we are tempted based on our aspirations based on our dreams or based on our fears we are tempted because we lack something when you have something in abundance you cannot be tempted with it if you have enough food nobody can tempt you with food it is when the viscosity that temptation comes because you need something so your dreams your aspirations you want to be successful you want to be rich you want to be famous and so because of this there is a temptation to maybe take what does not belong to us there is a temptation to cut short corners because of our dreams because of our aspirations and if it's based on fear the fear of failure the fear of sickness the fear of poverty that can also lead us into temptation and we may succumb to it so the young person who is going to write the exams the fear of failure will let the person taking extra materials into the examination room because he or she doesn't want to fail may write in his farm may write on his thighs may write on a piece of paper and every day is becoming complicated and then the ladies who wear their wig sometimes they put their apple inside their wig so he's not carrying only brazilian hair he is carrying a pro as well it is not easy so that temptation to fail is making the person succumb to temptation and jesus we are told that he was hungry so if we are hungry jesus also felt hunger whatever experiences we are going through we are not strange to jesus the only thing is that he did not sin that is why whatever the situation we come before jesus and we ask for help be with me lord when i am in trouble he was hungry so automatically the next thing he needed was what food and so the devil comes to him and tells him that he should command that the stone should become bread if you are the son of god so jesus needed food if he didn't think fast but already i need food so this is no temptation but the problem is that who is giving the command who is giving the instructions the devil cannot command jesus so if jesus had done it it was not saying that 10 stone into bread and eat and we know that this is something cheap for jesus to do he healed the sick brought the dead back to life walked on the sea during a triumphant entry into jerusalem when the scribes and the pharisees told jesus to tell his followers and their children that they should stop as cl uh cheering him up jesus told them that if these were to keep quiet even the stones will praise god so it is nothing difficult for him but the point is that if he had done it he would have obeyed the evil one and it is because we listen to the voice of the tempter in the person of eve that is why all of humanity has fallen into original sin so we must listen to the voice of god it is god who instructs us it is god who gives us mission it is not the devil it is not the evil one and so jesus told him that one does not live on bread alone at that moment he was hungry but he says no and of course matthew will add that on every wave that comes from the mouth of god so jesus defeated the evil one and we are told that he didn't give up temptation doesn't come once it will come several times he took jesus up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant in the flesh show them all the kingdoms of the world and listen to what the devil said i shall give to you all this power and glory wow who doesn't like power and who doesn't like glory haven't we see many people fighting for power and glory and so if it is coming to you so easily wouldn't you take it you didn't work hard for it you are going to do only one thing that is to worship the devil and you have power and glory and the devil is saying that for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish and i asked who gave all this power and glory to the devil i can't find it anywhere in scripture and i asked the technical team the first massive they can give us john chapter 8 verse 44 where jesus tells us something about the devil that the devil for him is like lies is in his dna when he speaks he is speaking because his nature is full of lies so jesus calls him a liar and the father of lies that is the devil nobody has given him all that this kingdom all the power and yet no age 44 and yet that is what he is telling jesus and if you don't take care you will believe it because if he could show all this to you in an instant you will believe it don't people sell buildings and other facilities to people that do not belong to them they are scammers and the devil is you are of your father the devil and you want to carry out your father's desires he was a medra from the beginning and has not stood in the truth because there is no truth in him there is no truth in him the devil when he tells a lie he speaks from his own nature because he is a liar and the father of lies and that is what he was telling jesus the father of lies to pay attention in our desire to be powerful in our desire to seek glory many of us are led astray many of us enter into different covenants with the evil one and some in order to become powerful or to get power and glory have even ended up killing others and some they do not mind hiring people to eliminate their enemies just because they want power and glory power and glory which do not last and this is the temptation and the devil is saying that you all will get all this if only you worship me if only you worship me the worship of satan has led many people astray and yet when he gives you the power and the glory he is not going to set you free at the end of the day this same power and glory will lead to your distraction because we have been told that the devil is a medra he will not give you with a devil there is nothing like free lunch you will pay for it you will pay for it a hundred fold so don't be deceived even when he sends this to you looking at your dreams what you want to do you want to be a big person you want to be famous you want to be rich you want to move with the big guys if you are not careful if we are not careful we may be led astray be with us lord when we are in trouble and then the devil once again did not give up and led jesus to jerusalem made him stand on the temple the walls and he said to me if you are the son of god but jesus knows he is the son of god he knows he doesn't need the devil for validation so we know we are christians we don't need anybody to tell us whether we are christians or not by our actions by our conduct we prove to the whole world that we are christians simple as we are ambassadors of christ so why if you are the son of god he knows if you are the son of god a hand so what throw yourself down from here throw yourself down from here the devil is a medra and jesus is not a daredevil why should he simply because it is written and that is what we read in the responsibility 91 it is written that he will command his angels concerning you to guard you with your hands they will support you unless you touch your foot against a stone so because it is written there and it is not by accident and because god has power i just stand up then that i throw myself down god come and catch me you see what the devil can do sometimes it doesn't make sense i see to prove that you are very popular and if all the people down there should see christ coming and then he lands like a superman or batman then he will win the applause of people jesus didn't come because he wants to be popular he's not a populist figure no that is why sometimes even when he performs some miracles he kills people he tells them to keep it to themselves don't tell anybody no they didn't come for popularity's sake they came to preach repentance to save humanity that is jesus for you so if we are not careful that desire to become popular to become famous even though not many of us are called amos you will end up doing things that will be putting the lord your god to the test the devil may cite scriptures may tell you everybody is doing it you do it to become popular so go ahead but be careful he knows all the three the tricks remember bible says second corinthians 11 14 that even satan disguises himself as an angel of light hey the devil can stand before you he will transform himself as an angel of light and you have to have a descending spirit that is the grace of god to be able to read in between the lie the lies otherwise he leads you astray throw yourself down even though we know that there are zebra crosses so does it mean that when you are crossing you don't look on your left and your right you just cross anyhow no and jesus says no you shall not put the lord your god to the test we are told that when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time meaning that he wasn't done with jesus yet he will come back again to tempt him and he did come back again when in the garden of gethsemane jesus was praying seeing the difficulties the challenges jesus was scared and he prayed that if it's possible the father should take the cup of suffering away from him it was a temptation but then jesus says not my will but the will of the father must be done so you see the devil never leaves you will continue to pursue you but so long as we have close relationship with god then we are sure of victory but the moment we are away or we stray from him we become a an easy pray for the evil one even right to the point when he was on the cross the miserable criminal who was killed was also tempting christ that why don't you save yourself and save us also jesus could have saved himself but then he would have lost focus he had a mission and the devil wanted to derail that mission wanted to derail that progress and jesus kept his focus right to the end so as we read these things we ask ourselves what are various temptations what are the various temptations we go through as individuals as communities and as a nation what are our desires aspirations our dreams in our attempts to reach our dreams and desires are we being led astray or we are doing it in conformity with the will of god remember that the devil feeds on our dreams on our aspirations as we live in this world what are our fears are you afraid of poverty are you afraid of sickness are you afraid of failure are you afraid of public radical and so because of our fears are we getting involved in things that are not of the will of god are we succumbing to temptation jesus is calling us all to stay with him because he is always with us he is a faithful god and so on this day on this first sunday of lent our sincere prayer is that be with us lord when we are in trouble when we face temptations when we face difficulties and challenges let us know that it is not because god has abandoned us it is not because god is absent he is always with us and we know that everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved let us continue to call upon him let us continue to rely on him we will fulfill our dreams and take away our fears amen dear friends in christ having heard the word of god shall we now be on our feet and together recite the creed i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and ruled again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who are spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of saints and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen with vincent de paul a year ago the society of saint vincent de paul launched an appeal to provide materials and equipment for the infirmary of the christian handmaid's children's soul an orphanage at attending and to drill a borehole for the saints and thomas aquinas school parishioners joined christ straightforward in 11 other parishes in the australian ring to contribute to this noble course and to invoke our good lord's lenten blessings i am happy to inform you that the project has been successfully executed and handed over by the austrian priest essential drugs dressing materials cleaning agents furniture medical equipment salt finishing and electrical appliances have been delivered to their chrysler handmaid's children's zoo and a boat who provided for the st thomas aquinas school permit me to spread the society's profound appreciation to parishioners who donated we thank you and fervently pray in accordance with the promise of proverbs 2010 for your bounds to be filled with plenty and your vast overflow process of this year's lenten arms giving project will be used to associate the construction of a pediatric hospital which is an initiative of our own diocese spearheaded parishioners so as you may be aware for some time now we've been saying some special prayers after the post communion the prayer of the synod on synodality my mission here this morning is just to throw a little light on what this synodality process is all about so that at the appropriate time when we invite you in your various groups you avail yourself to give us your opinion on how the church and the parish is being run what you think should be done better where you think we can improve on generally any concern you have so basically what is a synod a synod is usually a meeting of a special counsel of the hierarchy of the church you are looking at the bishop priests parish chess cathy's and other religious in brief it means coming together or traveling together a synodal church is a church which listens and this is mostly done through consultations so in october 2021 pope francis formerly opened a two-year process called the synod on synodality this is to enable as form sino teams at the parish level so that we engage you parish members in broad consultations so that come 2023 when the bishops meet they will have a very fair idea of what is going on at the various parishes at the local level so that whatever decisions come will be based on what is really happening in the church so the team that has been put together here has broken down the parish into groups you have debunked groups you have ministries you have societies you have youth groups and it is our idea to engage you every saturday between the hours of 9 00 to 12 noon so that we interact and hear your concerns every sunday a group that will be met will be announced in church so we would want to start particularly with the ppc this coming saturday and thereafter continue with some societies debunk groups youth movements and all what we want you to come and do is to come and speak your mind on issues concerning the parish and parish governance we don't want you to keep your thoughts to yourself and grumble to somebody else it is not a platform for castigation of others no very frank business anybody's idea is welcome so please when we call you we expect you to come in your numbers
