polite questions we can also use may in polite answers follow along with me and read the examples i don't have my pen may i borrow your pen you may borrow my pen here's a second example may i leave now i don't want to be late no you may not we have another example ed wants to go to his piano lesson may he borrow your car yes he may okay listen to this example i need a new cassette may i go to the store no you may not you should do your homework here may means the same as can for permission we use may to be polite now let's practice this new modal auxiliary verb may are you ready students let's use the new modal auxiliary may in our conversation sylvia i have a stomachache may i go to the doctor yes you may then you will feel better thank you sylvia anna i want to buy a new piano may i but i need it next week thank you alberto i will give it to you next week thank you everyone so we use may with polite questions and answers the negative form of may of course is may not let's look at some examples may paul go to his piano lesson yes paul may go to his piano lesson he may not go to the football match next example may george go outside no he may not it is raining okay next example may my aunt go with us no she may not she doesn't have a ticket and a last example may i play your guitar no you may not you are never careful okay now let's practice now that we know may and may not alberto may i go to the concert with you tonight yes you may you should have a ticket there will be many people at the concert thank you alberto now ask sylvia a question sylvia may i borrow your music tonight i lost my music book on the bus i'm sorry no you may not i should use my music book tonight i want to practice anna may alberto use your music book tonight yes he may i am going to study no you may not sorry i'm joking read and repeat [Music] so we use may in polite questions and answers and we can also use may to mean maybe a 50 50 possibility take a look at some examples is paula going to the music store tomorrow she may go i'm not sure second example andy may eat at a restaurant tonight he went to the bank this morning next example louise may play her guitar tomorrow her friend will return it tonight next example are we driving to the stereo store tonight we may drive my car may be repaired today right let's practice using may alberto are you going to study after i may not go dancing tonight have a headache we shouldn't go to my flat the stereo may not work so the negative of may is always may not there is no short form like may it doesn't exist always may not first all right good job everyone so we may see you at the cafe now here is a chart to help you remember the new grammar we learned today take a look at the chart please first we have the positive form of may we may buy a new cd so we have our subject plus the modal auxiliary may plus the verb plus the object or complement we also have the negative form of may may not we may not buy a new cd so you have your subject plus always may not not a short form but may not plus your verb plus object or complement we can also use may with yes no questions may we buy a new cd please so you start with may then add your subject then the verb and then your object or complement now take a look at the difference between some sentences we can say maybe he will be late we can also say he may be late do you see how maybe comes at the beginning of the sentence and it's one word usually it's at the beginning but sometimes it goes in the middle of the sentence when we use b with may it is two words may comes after the subject and b comes after me okay take a look at these examples so you can understand we may be happy at the theater means the same as maybe we will be happy at the theater next example she may be at the cinema has the same meaning as maybe she is at the cinema all right also may is used for present time and possible future time here are some more examples for you to look at she may be at the cinema now she may go to the cinema tomorrow all right good now we will learn a new modal auxiliary this one's called might now might also means maybe a 50 50 possibility here are some examples of might tommy might learn how to play the violin her sister might buy the new janet jackson cd greg might sing at the cafe tonight molly might go to the theater tonight she isn't sure so we can see that might means maybe we can use may or we can use might to mean maybe a 50 50 possibility let's look at how these examples are the same the sentences are different but they have the same meaning take a look again at the examples tommy might learn to play the violin this sentence has the same meaning as maybe tommy will learn to play the violin they have the same meaning we can see it in the second example greg might sing at the cafe tonight this sentence means the same as maybe greg will sing at the cafe tonight okay now let's try to practice using our new model might oh what is the problem anna you look sad i might stay at home my mother can make dinner for me i might listen to my old cds i'm sure you will be all right how are you alberto i am okay but i am a little very good sylvia how are things with you my life is good i might buy a new gibson guitar my guitar is very old i might borrow some money from my father gibson guitars are very expensive yes you are right thank you everyone we can see that might means maybe it may or might be possible okay here are some more examples take a look anna might stay at home now this sentence means the same as maybe anna will stay at home alberto might go to bed early tomorrow night this has the same meaning as maybe alberto will go to bed early tomorrow night let's look at the next example sylvia might buy a new gibson guitar means exactly the same as maybe sylvia will buy a new gibson guitar okay now we might and we may and we should look and listen [Music] look and listen tom might buy the new pink cd tara might buy a new song book then she might sing some new songs we might go to the concert tonight and then we might go to bed early tomorrow night danielle might buy a new cassette player she might put timberlake i might buy their knee series oh i like justin too what are you going to do this weekend anna i might go to the cinema or i might go shopping my friend might come to visit me that sounds good now we learned the positive form of might the negative form is might not we don't use a shortened form it's just might not in the negative form might not means maybe not it might not be possible it may not be possible maybe it won't be possible okay let's look at some examples it is raining they might not go to the concert next example she has a cold she might not sing tonight another example millie has no money she might not buy a new flute and the next example the concert will be crowded my sister might not go so now we are ready to practice with might not sylvia there is a new cd store near your apartment will you go i might not go i have no money my sister might go she's always rich i might borrow her cds good idea alberto what are you going to do before the concert tonight i might might not like the singer so we might not go to the concert there might not be any tickets [Music] read and repeat [Music] now here is a chart to help you remember the modal verbs we studied today take a look on your computer we have the positive form of might ali might buy the tickets so we have the subject plus might plus our main verb plus the object or complement and we have the negative form which is might not ali might not buy the tickets again we have our subject plus might not plus the verb plus the object or complement now let's review we can use may and polite questions and answers we can use may or may not in the answers here are some more examples may i go to the concert yes you may second example may john play his piano no he may not i am studying we can use may or may not to mean maybe or maybe not take a look at these examples i may not play my drums tonight means the same as maybe i won't play my drums tonight next example i may play my drums tonight means the same as maybe i will play my drums tonight we use might or might not to mean maybe or maybe not here are more examples i might go to the musical tonight means the same as maybe i will go to the musical tonight jennifer might not buy the new cd this sentence has the same meaning as maybe jennifer will not buy the new cd so now that we have reviewed let's practice again sylvia tell us five things you may do this weekend in alberto you please tell us five things you might do tonight anna you tell us five things you might not do this weekend is everyone ready please okay sylvia you start okay i may go to the theater i may go to my friend's house i may visit my grandmother i made i may borrow some cds from my cousin i may practice the piano all right very good so sylvia said i may go to the theater i may go to my friend's house i may visit my grandmother i may borrow some cds from my cousin or i may practice the piano so all of these sentences mean maybe maybe she will do these things now you alberto okay i might take the train to the concert i might wear my legends i might go to a cafe after the concert i might study before the concert i might stay at my aunt's house she lays closer to the stadium all right very good alberto said i might take the train to the concert i might wear my new jeans i might go to a cafe after the concert i might study before the concert or i might stay at my aunt's house she lives close to the stadium so again all of alberto sentences mean maybe maybe he will do these things all right good your turn anna i might not go to the cinema i might not watch tv i might not listen to music i might not go shopping i don't need anything i i might not go to my friends i don't like his new cities all right good so ana said i might not go to the cinema i might not watch tv i might not listen to music i might not go shopping i don't need anything and i might not go to my friends i don't like his new cds again honest sentences mean maybe not all right good job everyone thank you now i want you to change these sentences and use may or might here is an example it's possible that i will go to the music store okay next example i may go to the music store okay so the first sentence it's possible that i will go to the music store you can use may to make this sentence a lot easier i may go to the music store so they have the same meaning now anna you changed this sentence it's possible that i will see you after the concert anna i may see you after the concert i may see you good after the concert so our example was it's possible that i will see you after the concert anna used may to make it a shorter easier sentence she said i may see you after the concert the sentences have the same meaning okay now alberto it's your turn okay here is alberto's sentence maybe and will forget her guitar so we we want to use mei or might alberto and may forget our gator good and may forget her guitar okay so our sentence was maybe anne will forget her guitar but alberto made it a little bit different he said anne may forget her guitar they mean the same all right sylvia this one's yours maybe we will watch the movie tomorrow so we want to change this and use may or might sylvia we might watch the movie tomorrow we might watch the movie tomorrow so our sentence was maybe we will watch the movie tomorrow means the same as sylvia's answer we might watch the movie tomorrow okay good anna this one's yours it's possible that he will buy a new piano chair so how can we change this anna using may or might he might buy a new piano chair he might buy a new piano chair so our first sentence was it's possible that he will buy a new piano chair ana changed it she said he might buy a new piano chair so we can say them both to mean the same thing okay more examples you're all doing very well as usual it's possible that janet won't come to the show okay anna can you change this make this shorter and easier janet might not come to the show janet might not come to the show got our sentence was it's possible that janet won't come to the show anna said janet might not come to the show so now we can see we can use might and may for future or present okay alberto maybe i won't meet you after the concert what's a different way to say this alberto i might not meet you after the concept i might not meet you after a concert so maybe i won't meet you after the concert means the same as i might not meet you after the concert okay sylvia you get the last one maybe we will not go out this weekend what do you think sylvia we might not go out
