she would do a miracle in some of these cases Lord that there boy that was injured with the head injury father we just pray for a miracle that you would you would save him and for for those who are sick Lord we just pray that you would reach down and touch them and restore their health whether we believe and we trust and we know that you are able to do all these things we know that you care it's a father we just hand these over to you we lift up these burdens to you which says that you would intercede we ask these things in the name of Yeshua amen tonight we are going to have oh let me do liturgy first II get ahead of myself tonight we're going to have videos on the screen for worship but let's go and do liturgy is already remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy six days you shall labor and do all your work but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God in it you shall do no work for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth the sea and all that is in them and he rested on the seventh day therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant it is a sign between me and the children of Israel forever for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed blessed are You Lord our God King eternal who distinguishes between the holy and the profane between light and darkness between Israel and the nations between the seventh day and the six days of work blessed are you lord who distinguishes between the holy and the profane what is the Great Commandment here Oh Israel the Lord our God the Lord is one and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul with all your mind and with all your strength this is the first and Great Commandment and the second is like it you shall love your neighbor as yourself on these two Commandments hang all the law and the prophets for this is the love of God that we keep his Commandments and His commandments are not burdensome have those who love your law and nothing causes them to stumble blessed are You Lord God Lord our God King eternal who chose us from among the nations and gave to us your tour of truth and set life everlasting in our midst blessed are You Lord giver of the Torah blessed are you O Lord our God and God of her father's the God of Abraham the god of Isaac and the God of Jacob the great mighty and awesome God the Most High God who bestows loving-kindness the creator of all don't have somebody to gather around with look around and find somebody else who doesn't have somebody together with you guys just gather together okay I forgot to mention earlier Melissa had surgery this week and so keep her in your prayers as well she's having a rough recovery I guess she had some allergic reaction to something I don't know if they ever found out for sure what it was but she was having a pretty pretty bad reaction so keep her in your prayers as well Lord we thank you for these people we thank you for these families by their very first for the fathers for the husbands lord I pray that you would strengthen them that they would be godly leaders in their home that they would follow you and serve you and lead their family well that there would be a good example to their children that you would be their head that they would follow you or that they would be imitators imitators of you Lord imitators of Christ that they would lead their family the way that you would rather pay for the wives and the mothers whatever that she would encourage them especially when times get difficult and trying encourage them strengthen them but help them too got them to lean on you when their days are difficult and trying when they're stressed out brother bear that you bring them relief bring them peace of them to be godly mothers who teach their children well Godley wives who love their husbands will without these parents to raise their children to love you and to serve you and to follow you all of their life but I pray for each child here or that you would bless them that you would give them good health and long life that they would love you that they wouldn't know you in an intimate way but if they don't already know you that they would come to know you but I pay for each person here or the truth bless each person here that you speak to them that you fill them with your Holy Spirit that you would leave them and guide them in everything that they do guide them in their ways guide them in righteousness after make good decisions but we praise you we thank you and the name of Yeshua amen all right Greg is gonna have to our thought for us tonight shabbat shalom or this week's Torah key teetsi when you go out you know so the Israelites that's when you go out to battle or could bend when you go out to the Promised Land for us when you go out into the world or when we go out into life you know of the of these verses they say that of the six hundred and some mitzvahs that the father gave us there are 70 plus some mitzvahs in these verses right here these are instructions on all kinds of things there's there's death in here there's blessings in here there's one underlying theme I picked up from all this I wish I thought really pertain to us and I give the underlying theme of respect there's respect in here for the father you know in one of one of the verses we make vows to our Father we are to complete those vowels in a timely manner that's respect to the Father respect to the father's Authority respect to our fellow man there's many verses in here the relates to our fellow man you know if you're loaning something to to a fellow brother you know don't take his the one about don't take the upper/lower millstone don't take his his means of life away from it you know be respectful for this man be respectful for those that are that are less fortunate to us when we reap our fields you know when we when we pick our grapes in our in our grapevines leave some there don't if we leave that sheath in the field don't go back for it leave that for the foreigners for the follow fatherless for the widows that's respect for our fellow man many dealings with them there's death in these you know many times it says for sexual immorality a rebellious son kidnapping stealing you know there's consequences for those things they're pointed out to us in these verses here there's also blessings you know find the mother in the birds internists take the baby birds not the mother things will will go good for you in your life so there's blessings in these verses as well there's also respect for what the father has given us you know don't mix the ox and the goat and together don't so multiple seeds in your fields that's respect for things the father has given us so to me an underlying theme in all this has to do with with respect to both the father our fellow men and what the father has given us would you join me in prayer please their Heavenly Father we thank you today we thank you for these instructions these instructions that you have given us let us take him to our heart let us lead them as we go forward in our life and through these weeks let every one of us be an example for you of you of your glory and of your instructions you have given these things for us for our benefit let us use them as you have given us for and you shew his name amen Corinne L will will have our message oh yeah all right shabbat shalom to everybody so this was kind of a rough torah portion it's it's kind of tough it's kind of hard to deal with that and I'm not gonna make it any easier on you and so my message tonight is simply titled sin No catchy title just sin you can look at my notes later and that's in great big bold letters at the top sin a co-worker came up to me this week and asked me my plans for the weekend and I said proudly I'm gonna be speaking at church I'm gonna take my day off Friday and prepare my message and he asked well what are you talking about and I said sin he kind of chuckled and said well that should be easy we all do it might chuckle back and said yeah you're right but as I was working on my message as I was trying to type it out that conversation came back to me about just how casual I had been about that a casual rial can be about sin in our lives we just accept it as a natural part of our lives when I come up here when I speak to you from from behind this podium it's it's never with an attitude of let me show you how I've got everything figured out it's not a spirit of me saying I I understand it all and let me teach you so that you can can walk uprightly like I do now it's always that I'm speaking about things that God is dealing with me about so if my message is sin tonight is because God has been dealing with me about sin and sometimes that's uncomfortable sometimes it's rather painful and like reading this week's Torah portion can be out-and-out brutal that's just the truth of the matter so tonight as I talked to you about sin I have to confess that God is dealing about my sin this is going to be a little bit personal it's going to be a little bit uncomfortable for me especially my hope my desire is that maybe something I say will help encourage you will help make your walk a little straighter maybe you won't stumble on all the stones that I have stumbled on in my walk let's pray our father our King I'm praying right now for courage well you know that I struggled to put this together you know that I struggle to to even write these words out so as I stand up here father before these people that I love these people that I care about I pray that you give me the courage and the strength to say truth while there I pray that you would give me a resolute spirit but not a harsh spirit I pray that you would help us all to recognize and deal with the sin that is in our lives other sin separates us from you and that's hard enough for me to deal with in my life but I don't want to think about my friends and my family being separated father please help us tonight help me tonight father father I ask and I pray this through your great son's name Yeshua HaMashiach amen the scripture that I'm going to center around tonight is Genesis 4 3 through 8 you want to take time to flip over in your phone or if you actually have a real Bible with you so Genesis four I'm gonna be reading out of the King James first and in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord and Abel he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and the fat thereof and the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect and Cain was very wroth and his countenance fell and the Lord said unto Cain why art thou wroth and why has your countenance fallen if thou doest well shalt thou not be accepted and if thou doest not well sin lieth at your door and unto thee shall be his desire and now shalt rule over him and Cain talked with Abel his brother and it came to pass when they were in the field that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and slew him now I would dare to say that if you grew up in America if you grew up in a judeo-christian country you know the story of Cain and Abel the verse that I really want to draw in on is verse seven if thou doest well shalt thou not be accepted and if thou doest not well sin lieth at the door and unto thee shall be his desire and thou shalt rule over him if you read that in the NS in ASB if you do well will not your countenance be lifted and if you do not do well sin is crouching at the door and its desire is for you but you must master it I've been chewing on this verse for more than four years I remember reading it in our weekly Torah portions before we ever moved to Oklahoma I don't know if God ever does that with you but he does it to me where one verse will keep echoing in my mind sometimes it's days or weeks this one has been years he keeps reminding me of that Scripture if you do well you will be accepted if you don't sin is crouching at the door I've read or listened to many commentaries about this narrative and I've asked other people what they think most people will stop that the Cain brought an offering of the field while his brother brought a more meaningful offer of a living creature and that it's the value of the offering that God has judged in these men but I'm going to suggest to you by the time I'm done tonight that that's not correct I must save that for the end of the message and we just say something about the human race so far we are two generations in Adam and Eve humans 1.0 Adam fails to keep the garden allows the snake to have access to his wife he falls for the deception caves to her desires to have more Adam in rebellion submits to his wife and not to his Creator Cain and Abel humans 1.2 indie murder two generations in and it's not a very good track record I think if we're honest if we look in the world that we live in today and if we look at our own lives it's not gotten a lot better makes me wonder how how God can be that patient if it's been this way if it's been this bad if we let's put it where it is if we have been this bad from the very beginning how can you tolerate us the amazing thing is that from the very beginning our Father in his eternal wisdom his unending love made a path made a way for us creator Savior resurrector eternal king sin is crouching at your door for many of us that have listened any Hebrew word studies one of the first words we hear is sin ha - ah in Hebrew and it has that heard that sense of to miss the mark Paul uses this meaning in Romans 10:4 kind of setting that the Torah is the goal he says for Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth we know that that word end and is Telos in the Greek and it it's representative of the goal it's the representative of the standard that we are trying to hit but God and in this narrative God is the one speaking God is not using that analogy he is using the analogy he says that sin is crouching sin has a desire for us God is presenting sin as a living thing an entity a power a monster if you will it's something that is capable of stalking us it's it has a a manned a goal to attack us so it's almost like two different topics are being talked about one is the picture of the hunter with his arrow when he draws back to hit his target and if he misses that is sin but the other is that we're the target and that we have to find a way to stop the arrow so how can those two things those two meanings of sin work together missing the mark or being the mark my first confession I want to give you an example of missing the mark now this is personal to me it may not be the case for you but I imagine that some of you will have a similar story I wake up every morning for work at 5:00 a.m. my wife Kimberly makes me a little breakfast some toast or a bagel maybe even a fried egg sandwich if I'm really lucky up at 5:00 shower eat dressed out the door on my way to work and everyday this is the narrative that plays on in my mind a donut would be a nice treat still me no I don't need a donut I just had breakfast how about a cup of iced coffee that would be nice you're really tired now I don't need a cup of coffee it's early that's why I'm tired and I don't need to waste the money now some days I make it to work straight through other days I make it to work with a doughnut and a cup of coffee now that seems humorous and it's meant to but it's also a very real and personal struggle for me you say well it's not a sin to eat a doughnut or have a cup of coffee and you're right nowhere in the Bible is that forbidden but what about the cumulative effect what about 40 pounds later what about hundreds of dollars spent on a craving it's not because I'm hungry I just ate it's a craving well you say well it's not that bad well there's more see for two years I was unemployed here many of you have prayed for me for that and when I found a job one of the things that I promised God is that I would be a good steward of the money that I would be generous and help the people around me as best I could and now I've broken a vow see what seemed like a little light struggle a small thing for some of us can be a big thing I get it there's no law against eating a doughnut and I'm not saying that it's evil to eat a doughnut or have a snack but if you're out of control if this is something that drives you if it's causing you to break a vow that you made to God how many have been a smoker and promised God that you would do whatever if you help you to quit then you took a cigarette up again after he helped you once it's easy enough to do sometimes we don't even think about it and honestly I hadn't even thought of it that way until I started putting this message together my first confession to you tonight is that I'm selfish I spend money on things for myself that I could spend on my family or that I could help other people with it's a struggle that I go through every day I don't even really like this food that much but there's something about buying myself a treat a pattern is established you set a goal you fail shame or worse rebellion justification all over a donut and a cup of coffee how will I stand for the larger fight if I can't stand for the little fight how will I stand if I so readily cave in have you ever heard the term a guilty pleasure better examine your heart you better examine your life are you shooting at a target and missing or is that guilty pleasure shooting at you are you the target you have what you tolerate if Pastor once told me this he says you have what you tolerate and he used the example of a broken-down car if you have a broken-down car it's because you tolerate having a broken-down car if it was really important to you you'd figure out a way to get it fixed you would work harder longer hours you'd figure out how to fix it yourself and you wouldn't have a broken-down car in other words you're accountable for what you have you are accountable for the state of your life obviously a car is materialistic and temporary it matters none but what if we apply that principle to spiritual things if your prayer life is lacking it's because you tolerate it if your worship time is lacking it's because you tolerate it if you're living in sin it's because you tolerate it this category of sin I would I would label it as complacency compromise apathy laziness my second confession I know the value of time spit in prayer I know the value of time spent in praise and worship I know the value of time spent studying God's Word and the value of time engaging with my family and with my wife the value of time spent helping my brothers so why do I waste so much time why do i watch stupid TV shows that have no value that waste my time why do I listen to books that have no value why do I waste time on social media or the internet or on my phone see I spoke from this podium a month ago talking to you about the value of building our faith through more time in prayer and more time in worship and more time in study again I struggle every day with this it's far easier to just bury myself into a movie or a phone a game social media and just be numb when all the hurt and the chaos that's going on in this world around me and there's so many things even within this body that I could be praying for and I choose to check out I have a beautiful wife and a beautiful family that I could engage with before my two youngest daughters are ready to flee the home but some nights I just check out I bury my head into the phone into a game a TV show so much wasted time and you might say it's just a movie maybe a football game no sin in that right you're right you're right but again think of the cumulative effect how many hours of my life have gone to worthless and vain pursuits when I meet my Maker when I see him at my judgment will he talk to me about my accomplishments on a video game how many zombies I shot will you talk to me about Seinfeld or friends will you talk to me about all the amazing movies that I watched I'm afraid he's gonna ask me why did you waste so much time to the parable of the talents comes to mind God has blessed me with time he created me every second of every day I owe to him God has blessed me with a mind that enjoys study I'd love to read and dig into scripture it's actually one of my favorite things but yet it's always a fight I love to be generous I love to help people around me if I see a need I'm always think you know how can I help one of my wife's first fights with me is because she was can confessing some issues she was having at work over the phone and I started to tell her how to solve all those problems no just listen but that's who I am that's how God made me these are characteristics that he implanted me I did not create myself yet day after day week after week I choose to waste those talents I'm sorry to my family I'm sorry to my friends and family here in this room I'm actually sorry to everybody I passed along the way that I could have helped but I chose to seek out my own entertainment I want you to consider what I look like or what you look like when you watch TV when you sit in front of a computer on the internet or when you have your head down in a phone you're perfectly still you're the perfect target for the enemy's arrows you have no defense raised you're just putting up a sign that says here shoot me and how many of us know that that's where those arrows come from sometimes they come from the internet they come from the TV shows we watch or the games we play on our phone or social media I'm not aiming at a target I'm not trying to do well I'm simply sitting there waiting to be shot at I have made an idol of the things that get my attention and get my time you may say it's just a TV show or just a game on your phone show me where you spend your time and I will show you where your idols lie your time is not spent majority in pursuit of your king I dare say you have an idol somewhere I'm not saying you can never watch TV or play a game but I'm asking that you examine yourself are you taking a break or are you escaping your responsibilities to take aim at a target and pursue God and His righteousness you have to hate sin in reading this week's Torah portion God repeatedly tells us purge evil from your midst that word purge used in Deuteronomy 22 24 is BA R and it means destroy like a fire destroys it's not that we are called to shoo away sin or to sweep it under the carpet like we do our kitchens we are to destroy sin but you say to me well the sins that are mentioned in this week's Torah portion are horrible we're talking about adultery rape prostitution sure we can hate those sins pretty easily I would suggest to you that most cases those big sins committed by big sinners started as small sins and because you allowed it because you tolerated it we could because you justified it and you accepted it those arrows kept coming at you you were an easy target in most cases you don't just decide to cheat with another person's spouse you've been thinking about it indulging in it in your mind plotting scheming an innocent flirtation a hint dropped a seed planted maybe the lie you tell your spouse that you get away with once you try again and again maybe stealing supplies or time from your work maybe a little white lie on the numbers of your income tax plants the seed in you that it's okay sure it's easy to hate the person that we see on the news that embezzles millions of dollars but if you're taking tens of dollars you're no different if you're relying about time a little extra long lunch break here and there won't hurt anybody you've just justified your own sin you've said in your own heart and in your own mind it's okay sins of rebellion some of us are guilty of sins of rebellion sins like we read about in this week's Torah portion I am guilty this is my third confession - my sin is pornography I cheat on my wife with images with pictures in my mind I failed my king with lustful thoughts images recorded for magazines movies in the Internet I know how horrible it is I know that it's disgusting shameful I know how much it hurts my wife I know how it wrecks my walk with my king I have made an idol and I have placed it between me and my god between me and my wife I was 10 years old when I found pornography I am 47 now is a daily battle if your parents of young children you need to fight for their purity every television you show you watch is giving them permission every countless hour you allow them on the internet is giving them permission and if you don't talk to your children about these things somebody else will it'll come as a commercial on the TV it'll come as a commercial at the end of a YouTube video becoming a song on the radio I beg you as someone that has struggled with this for the majority of my life protect the purity of your children if it means you have to throw out your TV if it means you have to lock down the computer then do it I have prayed and prayed and prayed that God would take this away from me but the fight is every day and I'll continue fighting some days I went some days I fail but I will not justify it I will not compromise with it it is what it is I will keep fighting I will keep drawing back my bow and arrow and keep shooting at the target till I die if that's what it takes last week I talked about the Torah portion about the the the need to show up for the fight and that if we show up with a fight and God is on our side the victory is guaranteed I don't mind to die in that battle I don't mind that I'm prepared to lose my life for my kingdom it's a an easy choice but what I don't want for myself or for any of you is to die and not even be in the right battle you have to love righteousness I was listening to an audiobook a few weeks ago and the author gave this advice he says you have to love your self righteousness now I cringed when you said it like that because it certainly sounded vain but as he went on to explain it it made sense to me again I'll use the analogy of food if you're dieting and you've done really well for seven days on that eighth day you show up to work and one of your co-workers has brought doughnuts and everybody's in there eating Donuts and they say here have a doughnut and you know how good that donut will taste but you have to decide that I love the eighth day of victory over this habit more than I love the taste of that doughnut for some it's smoking a man confessed last week that he was praying that God would deliver him from smoking I was happy to pray with him I don't consider smoking a sin but if you're addicted to it if it's causing you to stumble in other areas then it's a problem he's going to have to decide that if on his eighth or ninth of day without a cigarette but that victory of that day is worth more than the pleasure of that cigarette for some it's alcohol for others pornography or any number of things that that maybe you struggle with on a regular basis you have to love God's righteousness and celebrate the victories when you have them every day if you've gone a whole day and you've not tripped up and fallen into something then celebrate and thank God that night when you wake up in the morning make the promise to him that with your help father will get through another day love God's righteousness celebrate his victories with you remind yourself of those things it can be a daunting uphill task to battle some of the demons that we have to battle but you have a helper we have some money that is on your side and that wants to help you if God has helped you to avoid a sin rejoice give thanks enjoy not sinning a taste of God's righteousness his kindness and His mercy are sweeter than any other thing going back to Genesis if you do well will not your countenance be lifted up and if you do not do well sin is crouching at the door and its desire is for you but you must master it many people will conclude that Cain messed up and not offering an animal I believe this is wrong the word used here for offering in the Hebrew is mean Kai we will find out in Leviticus that a mean call offering is not about sin it's a free will offering a gift to your king it's about drawing near to his presence and actually the mean call offering is a grain offering neither cane or Abel we're offering a blood sacrifice to atone for sins simply an offering to draw closer to God it's not what they offered that is being judged but how they offered it if you do well I had come to the conclusion in my prayer and study that this is the key if if I do well if I perform good things then sin would not be waiting to attack but I was wrong the word well here in Hebrew is your table to be good pleasing to be well to be glad to be joyful I don't think it was what Cain offered but it was his heart in how he offered it his attitude and I suggest to you that keeping torah with an angry heart is not pleasing to God it will not keep you from sinning and in fact it will make you a target for sin and I suggest that keeping Toro with the sense of entitlement or greed will not please our king and will make you a target keeping torah with a judgmental heart looking down at others is not pleasing to God it will make you a target you can insert other words train with a sense of entitlement praying with an angry heart praying with a judgmental heart worshiping it's our heart and how we come to our Father that is going to be judged all makes a mention that we are to live our lives as a living sacrifice that we put away our selfish desires the things of our flesh and we focus on God and on kingdom matters and on loving our brothers all wrestles with this he says that I do what I do not want to do he's wrestling with sin I would suggest to you that if you take aim at a target and you miss it's okay I'm not saying it's right I'm not saying that it's not a sin it might very well be but at least you're trying to do the right thing if I try to do the right thing and I come up short I believe there's grace and mercy for that I believe that's what grace and mercy are all about I believe that's what the whole of the sacrificial system was about but if I don't even try by simply choose to live in my sin where's the glory in that where's the struggle I mean at least if I try and fail I can pray to God and say give me the strength to do it again tomorrow but if I just sit in my sin I can't even pray to him here's the prayers of the righteous man I want you to aim at a target I want you to set a goal a big one I want you to follow in the steps of your Messiah even if you aim and miss you will be getting closer you will be putting you will be getting better along the way acknowledge when you miss ask for forgiveness pray about it confess it but keep aiming keep trying don't make excuses don't become lazy don't become apathetic don't justify your sins or you will be the target and now the fight is not about being righteous the fight is simply to stay alive again I wonder if it had been this bad from the very beginning why is God so patient with us how can he even tolerate us but from the very beginning his kindness his mercy has been the plan he made a way creator savior resurrector eternal king would join me in prayer please father I thank you so much the salvation you presented and provided for me a lowly sinner that you've given me a picture of what righteousness should look like you've given me the goal to aim for and I'm trying father please be patient with me please be patient with my family and my friends that are doing the very same thing they're trying father I hope that you hope that you would encourage their hearts check their motivation father check my motivation I don't want to be obedient to get stuff from you I don't want to be righteous for what I gain I simply want to express my love my respect and my faith to my king while I pray that your spirit would anoint everyone in this room everyone listening to the end to pursue righteousness for your name's sake father I love you I'm amazed by your patience I'm amazed by your kindness I thank you for who you are I thank you for what you've done in my life father I thank you for the anointed salvation that is Yeshua HaMashiach may your kingdom be forever and ever father amen so I've done the hard part I stood up here in front of all of you in front of my family my friends in front of a camera that's recording every word I've said tonight and I've confessed now I'm gonna call upon you if there is sin in your life I'm asking that you hit the floor you take a knee you humble yourself before your king and you confess it to him that you pray about it that you asked for forgiveness and that you start on the journey that is repentance if you need to confess to somebody and choose a mature brother or sister in faith and confess if somebody confesses something to you don't sit in judgment but don't condone it either pray for them encourage them mean it from your heart take a few moments however long you need but I would ask that you move from your chairs that you at least get up out of your seat and that you pray if you don't need to confess any sin then pray for your brothers and sisters that our everybody should take an action now thank you
