bo burnham interview moments that make me wheeze

is the dutch absurdist uh one of the things he does is uh he brings out a sock puppet which is a black sock see already i don't like him yeah all right all right so it's a white sock and then [Music] you did a show recently with uh and justin bieber and selena gomez were in the audience is that right yeah i didn't know that they were there i didn't know he knew my stuff i didn't know bieber personally and i have a bit in my act that sort of makes fun of justin bieber and some of these young pop stars basically it's a song and it mocks the way that those songs are written which i think is what the songs basically do is they they love songs to girls and they describe the girls as vaguely as they possibly can so that every girl can think that that song's about them so it's like it's like i love how your fingerprints are different than everybody else's and like i love how your eyes have that like bluish brownish greenish color and you're and like your torso has an arm on either side of it or like whatever um and did he did he would they appreciate you find out if they were matter well the thing is it is that seems sort of harmless but then it kind of gets a little darker and sort of accuses these these young pop artists of being part of this cycle where girls read magazines feel terrible about themselves because it says you know you should be skinny or you should be prettier they feel terrible and then these uh pop stars tell them that they're perfect and that they're beautiful in the songs they buy the song and then the pop stars on the cover the magazines they buy a magazine again so they're like and it's sort of just like this vicious psych and i basically like uh sort of imply that he's working for satan or whatever um but then i when i found out that he came to the show i just sort of felt bad because it's like this poor 18 year old kid like wanted to get out for the night like with his girlfriend they they snuck into the theater like through the back when the house lights were down he like grabbed her hand looked into her eyes and then i just tooled on him for 10 minutes he he shouldn't be able to talk before him yeah yeah that's true fair point i am yeah i'm of the the younger generation so i just wonder for all of you uh who are you all right now you can talk and the girl who plays the girl in the movie is is fantastic she is just great did you did you know right away that she would be the person you would cast yeah what is this for sure kelsey fisher who is absolutely incredible but she graduated eighth grade a week later we filmed the movie and then a week after she went to her freshman year of high school and she didn't get cast in her school play really well so i promised her i'd do this uh mr donia from faux knows high school thank you what is your advice you must have a lot of young people that say bo how do i get into the business how do i accomplish what you've accomplished what's your advice for young people i'd say well you got to just take a deep breath and give up don't the system is rigged against you your hard work and talent will not pay off that's it good night everybody i would say don't don't take advice from people like me who've gotten very lucky you know we're very bi like taylor swift telling you to follow your dreams is like a lottery winner saying liquidize your assets buy powerball tickets it works you will get you just you won't it's it's i didn't want to have this sort of finger wagging movie there's a lot of movies that seem like they're you know they try to like shove the internet into it where it feels like a taco bell commercial where it's like hashtag chalupa and it's like it's like can you can you talk about it can you talk about should i not say that taco spells great i i replaced pitbull at the university of uh southern florida for like an outdoor concert if you don't know who pitbull is uh pimple is like uh he's mr worldwide and uh he's he's a hip-hop artist slash villain from grand theft auto he's he is like a vague he is uh so anyway so it's the university of southern florida and uh big hip-hop fans of the school it's a big outdoor concert and i got the call like can you fly down to florida and replace pitbull for the show oh you knew you knew going in yeah okay i i thought maybe you got there and they were like by the way they thought it was the hippie you got to be pinpointed no no because i should have known like if you're asking for pitbull and then you get to me 50 other people pass in between that you know it's not like we don't have pitbull get me burnham but i wrote a song because people had broken his hand so i wrote a song to sort of open it making fun of people for breaking his hand and sticking with it just is like a thing to like really endear myself to [Music] them
