Yeah, I have such mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, I love the Victorian London setting, so I was bound to like it just because of that. And I was genuinely impressed by how busy the city was. Yeah, they cut back on the crowds compared to Unity, but OTOH we got working carriages, a packed Thames, and that awesome train hideout that really runs around the map.

I also love the attention to detail in the city building, especially the fact that you can see the London sewer being constructed across the city - which is 100% period accurate. Just don't think about what that implies about the state of the Thames, should you fall in. Euuuggh.

The combat was fine and the weapon upgrades were fun, and I even liked how it implemented levels. They weren't so obnoxious about level scaling (unlike Origins) so that a skilled player could still largely ignore the levels, if they really knew what they were doing. And climbing up to the top of Big Ben never got old, even if the grappling gun maybe made it a bit too easy.

OTOH, the plotting was rote, it lacked any of the moral ambiguity of previous titles, and how they shoehorned famous people into the story was beyond lazy. Particularly Dickens. Someone should be really ashamed of that.

And, seriously, just fuck Jacob. Worst. Assassin. EVAR. He's a lunkhead thug who has no business holding a hidden blade. The majority of the plot is him fucking things up, because he's a stupid asshole, and then forcing Evie to clean up his messes, because he's a stupid asshole.

(Then again, given what we've learned about Ubisoft's management in the past year, it doesn't seem hard to understand why they'd think Jacob was a good protagonist...)

This video gave voice to all the misgivings I had about this game. My first impression of this game was so good, with its to-scale world and actual stealth system. But it just wasn’t very fun to move around or fight.

Loved this game, but then again I’m a sucker for anything in victorian setting

It’s the only ac game I 100%’d next to ac2 and brotherhood

The last "true" Assassin's Creed game.

One of my favorite parts of the game was how we started the game as Master Assassins already. Such a refreshing change from the older games where we usually had to go through 3-4 sequences without any Assassin gear. Such a shame that this game got overshadowed by Unity's disastrous launch, it was actually a pretty decent entry.

Also, Jack the Ripper was also by far the best DLC of the franchise. Had the whole base game been like that, it would've been much more well received by critics and fans.
