I will always have a soft spot for this game because of what it attempted with regards to pedestrian density. This is one of the only games I've ever played where the open world feels lived in and it doesn't sacrifice pedestrian density. I'm fed up of playing games set in densely populated areas but there's barely anyone around, case in point any game set in New York and Times Square is fucking empty. It kills all immersion. Spider-Man PS4 clearly tried but was pushing the hardware and hopefully next gen can help fix this, because having pedestrians literally everywhere really makes a difference.
In terms of as an overall game, I can't believe that the fucking French Revolution is nothing more than set dressing for the story. It should have been the key fucking thing with Arno and Elise right on the front lines. I feel the Arno/Elise angle had so much potential but felt pretty underdeveloped which is a shame because if executed properly I probably would have got emotional at the ending.
It's a shame Unity released in such a poor state because I think it deserves a lot of credit for being one of the first current gen games that actually felt current gen and tried to push the technology. As an overall game it's pretty average with a lot of wasted potential but there was clearly a lot of effort put into it.
As someone who played every single AC before Origins/Odyssey, I think this game was the apex of amount of NPCs on screen and scale of the city, like the technology was finally ready. Also I liked how the assassination missions were presented/"isolated", which I dont think was featured since AC1.
Game just didnt feel that fun though.
The biggest thing I miss about this game is the "parkour down" feature. It was so fucking cool and the only game that ever used it.
God, I hate how much this game absolutely wasted the French revolution.
If you wanna make "Assassin's Creed: Romeo and Juliet", fine, but using an event as epic, interesting, and important as the French revolution as a fucking barely explored backdrop is an absolute travesty.
I've tried to get back into the game many times but I always give up after a couple hours. The visuals and setting are excellent, of course, and I love the parkour, and the handful of new mechanics they added to the stealth, but man, the missions, the gameplay, the story are all so dull. It's especially difficult to get back into the game after playing the newer titles, which feel like they have much more to offer, even if they do take some steps back as far as being an 'assassin' goes.
I think if you're looking for a very specific Assassin's Creed experience, that being, running through rooftops in a dense city and being a true stealthy killer, then Unity does have something to offer, but as an overall game it's easily the weakest entry in the franchise.
AC Unity made assassinations a big deal again. Multiple ways to approach and the ability to enter buildings really improved them.
I wish the parkour down feature stayed with the series.
I enjoyed doing the multiplayer missions so much. Synchronized stabs, chaotic escapes, multiple areas of approach, some of the most fun MP I've ever done.
I recently played through Odyssey and it's DLC, then noticed the Ezio Collection is on sale atm on Xbox so picked it up as I haven't played it in years. I enjoyed both Origins and Odyssey, but after playing AC2 again I really miss a game being set in one big city/three or four key cities where the world feels real. I still love AC as a franchise but the way they've turned it into an RPG, complete with fetch quests and "kill x amount of enemy" missions kinda bums me out.
If you can, play the game with French audio and English subs. It's a more authentic experience.
