the [ __ ] 45 here with my model 12 Winchester and I think it would be appropriate to start out smoking a little hot how about a big pot look at that forget that smoke for that court or that cool or about oh yeah there's a nice shotgun and it's mine but we do appreciate the help we get from Bud's gun shop comm check them out lots of cool stuff and the federal ammo we firing this Federal Premium we really appreciate them they help us feed our animals let's do something else like that stop sign it was a couple more so let's shoot something else about this once it called target we'll just set her out of it she's empty we also appreciate the Sonoran Desert Institute STI dot edu check the links in the description great distance learning gunsmithing stock refinishing checkering all that kind of stuff and many other things so we really appreciate the people to support us and we appreciate you all coming to watch because guess why the year you thought it was 2020 but actually the year is 1918 okay it's 1918 and that's what this is about armed in 1918 you know the drill maybe if you've been around okay we enjoy going through a certain period of time and kind of exploring what a person might have chosen regular person Joe Schmo like you me anybody else not to imply everybody watching is a Joe Schmo you might be a Navy SEAL I say but no really you know what I'm saying and so some period in time what ended the average person would have chosen for his rifle her rifle handgun shotgun okay not that there were not other good choices but these are just three that a person might have chosen in 1918 now why did we choose 1918 what's a very interesting period of time of course and you well lots of thoughts of years around that at that time period but 1918 what was going on come on now I know a lot of you maybe this month or out of school but you should know all about World War one right you know that was going on and there was also this little thing called a pandemic the Spanish flu really really bad at that time and we can all relate to that today can't wait because wow that one was really bad there were no vaccine is there anything for it and there were like five hundred I think million people infected on the planet 50 million deaths worldwide I read and I think in this trench here there were like over 600,000 deaths so it was really really bad and of course with World War 1 going on in 1918 was right when we were sending everybody overseas and they never coming back as the armistice was signed in November of 1918 troops moving all around the world crowds of people crowded in celebrating the end of it to everything and just a lot of people got it and a lot of people died with it it's really really a kind of a scary time for a lot of reasons wow I mean what do you need let's see we got world war 1 going on let's also add throw in a pandemic yeah so scary times and and then there was another big event I almost forgot and if not for it you wouldn't even know about John or me guess what that event was well my dad was born in 1918 it occurred to me so he was born in 1918 he started it all right ok so a big year interesting year we thought and we would explore sometimes that would have been chosen so what should we start with you know what would you like to start with well how about this handgun oK you've seen it I'll link to our videos maybe at least the first video on all of these but this is the 1903 the Colt 1903 pocket hammerless ok and you can watch that video and see me break it apart and everything it's not really hammerless there's a hammer under there but it's a concealed and it was a very popular handgun at the times it was 32 it's just the new 2bd cartridge we've got some mags loaded here it's not big but the gun and the cartridge were designed by yes who mr. John brownie and you know it's like a miniature 1911 in some ways except you know a really small cartridge and everything and it was a I mean it wasn't a big powerful firearm there were big powerful firearms but this might have been one depending on who it is would have found most useful depending on what else you have access to what your job is and where you live and you know what you're doing in your life maybe you don't even have that much use for a handgun but you could use one that you could put in your pocket either legally or illegally and night 18 and so you kind of like this because you know it's melted and it's not a it's a snag free firearm for the time it was almost ahead of its time you know that thing is really nice and a good shooter even though it's 32 ACP so far I don't think we've had any serious like failures to feed or jet so this would a man a popular gun they made over half a million of them so it was widely available and very very popular just just the right size so that would have been a viable choice for somebody that that wanted felt like they needed a handgun not a hunting handgun or anything like that maybe so well shoot the thing let's put some bootless in it take a couple shots with it the 1903 pocket Colt Colt pocket hammerless interesting firearm I'd rather like it tell you the truth yeah boy oh there's some little let's save the Listerine let's shoot the cowboy doesn't lock the slide doesn't lock back but it's a nice little little pistol you can even shoot a bowling pin with it what else target I'm gonna shoot through the hole how's that there I shot through the hole now there's no way you're knowing that I did right I might have just missed the whole time okay so the little pocket hammerless a viable choice okay reliable handy you could you could just have that pretty easily whether you're a bad guy or a good guy right so that might have been your choice or mine now for a shotgun let's go to the shotgun you saw me shoot it right the model 12 was oh man so popular a couple million of them I think made and this is what it would look like because this was the model 12 he might have had a longer barrel or my being cut off like this and you know what I'm talking about you know with with war going on and with the pandemic you know how we are right now you know the farms market people it's exploded people were very concerned a lot of people who've never owned a firearm maybe they don't have one or they want another one an additional one or whatever it is the firearms industry is can't keep up with the demand right now so for whatever reasons that is so there's no reason not to think they would have maybe been a similar a little attitude or feeling across the country in 1918 you've got not only the war going on and you know it's easy to look back on history you know and so this happened this month there in the war in that and then we signed the armistice and troops came home and you know pop pop pop yep planes whistles you know well you know in the middle of something you don't know what's going to happen and so the fear that people have it's more understandable if you're living through it like right now we don't know for sure what's going to happen with the current pandemic you know we're kind of all staying home for the most part everything and we expect in a few weeks to reach its peak or a couple of weeks and start going down well we can't write that story yet we're we're concerned we don't know it may surprise us and get worse you just never know right so again we're doing this your you're you're looking at this whenever you load it up and turn it on and click on it right but we're we're in early April right now okay John and I are I don't know when you are but I know when we are so this was been a pretty good choice the old reliable model 12 you know by that time it had been around awhile let's see 12 then 18 is that six yeah about six years have been around and very very popular you don't have the hammer the model 97 hand the bolt coming out the back at your face and all that it's just very popular very reliable as a hunting shotgun and just whatever so having a shotgun around would have made a lot of people feel better I'm gonna take couple more shots from Canada you don't mind because I like a shotgun in case you didn't know that I think most of you do oh man 12-gauge so you know there's always use for a shotgun most people know how to operate one and you know especially a pump with the safety on a pump shotgun is something that especially back in the early 1900's I mean how many people would have you know gotten to the age of whatever adulthood and not known how to operate a pump shotgun probably not nearly the percentage as we would have today so so very common Grayson knew your firearm it would have been you know definitely a viable choice now we're still trying to practice social distancing so I'm trying to do away with all Listerine there's just no need for it when you're doing the social distancing thing right and let's pop the cowboy with the last one standard gun most people know how to operate them and they have a wide variety of uses hunting self-defense and again it's a scary time you don't know what's going on so I think that would have made a good choice there's other shotguns you get found an old 97 or double-barrel or just whatever okay so to complete the battery another choice we thought would be a good choice it's just really unique rifle that nobody knew about right that was a joke 1894 Winchester Wow and probably the most popular chambering in 3030 so that would have made sense now with any of these I don't know you know during the the war and the effort it might have been difficult in some cases to get the ammo you wanted okay there were shortages but this one is very very common so if there's any ammo around you know thirty thirty we've been something you could probably find but nice cartridge you could hunt with it it was making self defense cartridge just you know whatever you needed and again a lever a lever action rifle who in in 1918 you know was not familiar with a lever action rifle and know how to operate one okay most people would be pretty familiar I would think especially with you know one like this that was possibly the most popular and common you know a lever-action rifle of all time I would like seven or the seven million of them plus were made so and this is an old one the octagonal barrel it would have been just like the one you might have bought you know at that time period 1918 a couple chocolate about on the gong Oh got there fast about that red plate on the left boy about the one on the right it's pretty hard let's say we saved the bowling pin didn't we they're too good for bowling just almost all there's a cinder block here the bash of cinder block thirty thirty would do it so a very very common cartridge very common rifle a very common type of action in the lever run most people would feel comfortable with that yeah and in 1918 again we're not talking soldiers we're talking the average person civilian they might have bought and you know like I say you don't know what's happening pandemic time war going on like perfectly imagine because they didn't have the benefit of 20/20 hindsight in the middle of that thing I would want a nice rifle shotgun maybe handgun okay so so this is I think at least three viable sensible choices that a person might have made in nineteen eighteen number why not very but all of them very very popular and widely available even in a time when you're maybe having trouble finding you know some materials shortages would have been you know something they had to deal with but a good old 30-30 rifle and you know model 12 shotgun and then one of these babies that might have offered a lot of comfort to people maybe in their pocket it's called a pocket gun isn't it so yeah so three choices 1918 a lot going on then there were other things going on of course but you know the war the pandemic and my dad being born you know yeah you know weird the way life works you know you you're just an infant and all that going on and you don't even know what's happening I guess by the time he was aware of much four or five six years old you know that was it was all behind behind folks but anyway it's the reason John's holding the camera and I'm standing here yeah my dad was born in that same year it's a multi wish year yeah so he had to learn early right but so he didn't make these choices in 1918 but but a lot of people did and we're making choices so especially you folks that know a lot about the old firearms what might you have chosen and I know you'd like to have maybe an awe three springfield military firearms are we sort of excluding in this because they would not have been as available probably but but what firearms would you have chosen if you had been an adult and for some weird reason you didn't have a firearm yet what was wrong with you but or maybe just one of them you might have had rifle and handgun and you decide to buy a shotgun what's shotgun would you have bought what life would you have bought if you did not have a good rifle or handgun so yeah share share with us okay because I know one thing about people is everybody has opinions right so I might have made other choices but these would have been you know three pretty good choices so I'm glad you kind of took this little trip down memory lane with us and back into history and I guess we're all kind of glad we were not there in 1918 maybe so well hope you're doing well and we appreciate your watching life is good oh yeah that's better this is a great gun for defense oh hey didn't
