they caught 45 what is the date on that silver dollar yeah it matches the date on the title of what you're looking at armed and 1899 right okay 1899 very good year I can barely remember it and so I wasn't packing arms very much at the time but what would a person possibly have been carrying in that year in terms of main handgun main shotgun and rifle alright we've done this before I hope you've seen them and it's an interesting thought and something to think about and to explore and that's what we're gonna do we've got some choices on the table and we're none of these came from anybody but my gun safes but we appreciate the assistance we get from Bud's gun shop comm check them out great source for everything really good support also the Sonoran Desert Institute STI dot edu or all you want about gunsmithing and some other things okay we appreciate their support STI dot edu and then also Federal Premium they help us feed these babies okay with shotgun shells rifle cartridges handgun cartridges things that will go into these firearms so we appreciate all the help we get mostly we appreciate you all coming today and we're gonna help you out just in case I know some of your pretty smart you've probably been working on coming up with a time machine and if you do I'd like for you to be fairly well educated as you travel back through time so you're not surprised if you go back in 1899 and you will have some knowledge about the farms you see people packing around okay you won't come off as a newbie alright so what do you let me tell you about well well 1899 first of all was a very good year for some people like every year and for some people not let's load well he's up and shooter you wanted that gosh 1899 I can barely remember we were involved in spanish-american war you know the USS Maine had been bombed or exploded just the prior year the previous year 1898 that I really don't remember and what else paperclip was invented Al Capone was born so yeah yeah thing I don't the first person Henry bliss I think was his name was killed in a traffic accident killed by a car first person ever killed by autumn automobile in 1899 that's pretty interesting I think a few more have been killed since so anyway 1899 that was just about the turn of the century wasn't it so this is a 45 colt Schofield which didn't really exist by the way right y'all knew that let's shoot this thing the old Smith the Wesson Schofield oh yeah boom and we got to shoot a cop there were a few Cowboys around still and wow what a group yeah the old Schofield Smith & Wesson this would have been one possible choice as a handgun again there are lots of choices but this would have been one okay any given year almost there would be closer than reopening there there was been many choices though handguns Colt Single Action Army among our there were even some double action you know Colts and other firearms at the time but this would have been a viable choice for somebody in 1899 good old Smith & Wesson top break because it was fairly quick to unload except I took a while there and to load it I think proving itself pretty well with the cavalry the reasons it wasn't as popular and had didn't go on like the Colt single-action was partly because of the cartridge issues we've talked about in various various videos it took a shorter cartridge the 45 Smith & Wesson 45 Schofield was a little shorter and they'd get the ammo mixed up because most people in the military at the time were carrying the Colt single-action 45 colt long colt the longer cartridge and everything this one and so you know it would not chamber in the old Schofield it will in this one force it's a reproduction so so anyway there were some issues like that and so it was discontinued but this will been a viable choice wouldn't a nice big cartridge good handgun good reputation it wouldn't have had them in the actual Schofield model that broke down this way it could have been the number three you know without the with the break on the frame which actually was little bit safer this one you're more likely pull it out and you know and dump all your rounds out if you weren't careful accidentally just pulled out your holster but a nice nice nice firearm so Bill Smith Harry Jones whoever this might have been the farm they chose there would have been other choices okay but this might have been their choice a good one and then their shotgun looks familiar looks a little bit like a model 97 doesn't it yes it's unloaded but it's a model 97 who designed this thing this this piece of hardware oh yeah John Browning we have to be nice yeah John Browning so this would have been a viable choice in 1899 because it had been around not too long at this point had it and pump shotgun the double barrels were still really popular of course but Wow this one hold more rounds you know what five or six rounds and you know quick to reload and shoot so when you can top it all so pretty interesting let's try it let's see if it works you want to I'm shot this for a while good old model 97 it would've been fresh on everybody's mind and people most people that could afford one would probably be wanting one don't you think yeah that's probably no family even though it had a hammer and the bolt comes out in your face there and tries to rip the skin off your hand if you're not careful so let's put one in take a shot oh yeah cowboy yeah gotcha gotcha watermelon Wow took it right out so yeah pump shotgun like that that you could shoot that many times those have a bit of an advantage over a double barrel doesn't it it really does and that would have been very very popular I would think it would very likely have been my choice okay this isn't about my sources necessarily it's about three possible choices and as you know today you know we're gonna see comments on these videos we'll go back in time or forward in time whatever we do with these people or where's Lee where's this and where's that yeah well it's Amy if it was today armed in 2020 well you're shooting buddy and you would probably have a differing opinions when you you might be carrying a CC handgun he's carrying a Glock 17 your shotgun is this you know so there'd be a lot of possible choices more today than ever right so but this would have been a pretty good choice I think and it might have been mine yeah depending so the good old model 97 John Browning designed it 1897 of course so it would not have been out very long and it was used later of course in World War one trench gun they were extensively used in law enforcement and just as to all all areas of endeavor where they're used it's just an absolute classic right so that would have made a nice shotgun choice and then how about a rifle well one nice choice would be this one good old trapdoor Springfield carbine or full length but carbine have been nice its 4570 we shoot a couple very popular cartridge of the day yes since 1873 it had been adopted in this rifle the Springfield trapdoor so the ammo just last today whatever the military adopts it's usually pretty popular and often readily available right so here we go let's ask you - bowling pin now let's shoot the gong with it I forgot where to hold guy I can see we're here to that big chuckle lid nice let's put another one up there I love the sound of that we need an oval and out there on that gold yeah big splatters of 405 green slip lid pretty cool open up the trapdoor and there goes the empty so you can load as I've demonstrated I mean I haven't done any real speed loading but I have demonstrated I think with these over the years in various videos thinking actually you know fire yeah pull out another one off your belt put it in there and boom you know I mean it's not like it takes ten minutes between shots just but because it's a single shot so it's obviously not a model 73 lever action farm or something but so this would have been a choice you or I we might have chosen winchester model 92 73 they says whatever but one of the advantages is you have the big cartridge 4570 and you could hunt with it be you know defensive you need to be a mo we've been readily available these guns by that time even before then I've read they were available even in catalogs there's parts guns and disorders you know that end up in private hands and they were just around they didn't making them since 73 and of course I think the adoption was actually officially from 73 to 92 which I'm at the 18th now again stay with me 1873 to 1892 believe and so yes several years since they had been the officially adopted firearm at the military although they're still in Yi says he how that is is always you know it's never a clear-cut date and so a lot of around and in all conditions and maybe surplus and so you know you get into a nice rifle powerful cartridge with ammo available very popular round cartridge for without spinning and maybe an arm and leg costing an arm and leg okay so pretty nice choice at the back I'm gonna shoot again just to show you that one round we'll put one in our hand here my fingers all right I'm gonna see loading but we need to shoot something that my ears then first these are not too hot because I'm firing him in this old original carbine which is made in 1879 so these people I'm talking about that might have chosen this might have chosen this this farm was around in the 1899 and they might have even been shooting two leaders like that one right there yeah my head or they might have chosen to do a little bowling in the backyard or desert just like that so you just never know so it would have been a pretty good choice handy little carbine especially if you're on horseback well you might be in one of those first cars you know so there you go a pretty nice battery for a person back in 1899 a nice revolver that proved itself shotgun that was me and had a long time to prove itself but it was proving itself right and in the old trapdoor Springfield not a big problem with any of those they might have been spending this dollar to to buy him a drink right at the local saloon so three good choices i I couldn't quibble too much with any of them and you know not a big a big problem if you wanted rapid-fire you know lever action with lots of capacity you know might have been you know your preference but these old things they there are a lot of them used these old trapdoor Springfield's even taking buffalo a lot of them and you sad as it is the the government I don't know if they supplied any of these I think they did made them even available maybe cheaper I know they did with ammo because they were trying to help eradicate the Buffalo unfortunately and so there lots of ammo available with those and then of course the old 97 Fresno Schofield great great firearm Smith & Wesson's were more prevalent in the West and you know whole country not just the West then we're led to believe you know the movies usually depict cowboys always almost carrying a Colt single-action well there were a lot of Smith & Wesson's also a lot of them so there had been a good choice so the year 1899 a good year gonna say to the shotgun the the browning auto-5 was was come up with by old John Browning in about 1899 it wasn't available okay so if you're wondering about that I really wouldn't have been a choice in 1899 very very unlikely okay a few years later it would have been but not in 1899 so this was one of the best choices for for high capacity right so three good guns makes me want to shoot them more and this spiders going to try to get one right there I'm not gonna Lane Hamlin and I just thought you might be interested and again if you're traveling through time now you know a little bit more about the year 1899 some of the firearms that were available and when you see people carrying them you know just ask them how they're trapdoors doing you'll you can you can really seem a professional and knowledgeable
