AK-50 Update - September 2021

that subscribe button for the rest of you welcome back to hell but yes today i am joined by my co-star the v2 firing prototype of the ak-50 can we get the cycling footage for the people in the back but at this point you've probably seen where we've been you see where we're at now it's time to show you where we're going if you haven't seen grantham's video that we did with this ak-50 we go ahead and leave a link down in the description but one of the things that i teased in that video was some of the new cad files see this was an awesome testbed prototype as we said before this is kind of a proof of concept that you can actually build a 50 bmg ak and you can build it in a stamped receiver with all the you know critical components like the front and rear trining riveted to a piece of bent sheet metal just like the akm it's super cool we learned a lot we learned a lot about our cam groove about gassing about you know being able to do this stamped at all served its purpose above and beyond the call of duty but now we're ready for the exciting part which is a [ __ ] pretty prototype which we've never had before if anything we've actually moved backwards this is uglier than the last prototype but again the reason we built this is really just for data which we got and the data that we got from this is what's going to be fueling the v3 yeah oh great now we're not finished with the models behind that 100 but we're pretty damn close and we're almost to the point where we're going to be getting some stuff machined but what we do have for you is some 3d prints what i have in my hand is the front angry cops i'm doing this for you trunnion of the ak-50 trunnion this one's actually done on our new resin printer which looks beautiful it feels like a really solid part it's super exciting to kind of get into the different aspects of 3d printing in that way but we've changed a couple of things some of you aka autists probably have already noticed some stuff about this but just really [ __ ] funny anyhow let's get back to the ak-50 so this here is the front trunnion of the ak-50 uh that's this part right here that's riveted in uh to the front of the receiver this is what holds the bolt this is where the locking lugs are it's also threaded because this is where the barrel screws into the gun also has this big through hole here uh because this is where the barrel is pinned so this is a press fit pin uh just like an akm where uh when the barrel screws in you just drill that hole there and then press a pin to quit to stop the barrel from unscrewing itself because unlike the common section this barrel actually does have something to stop it from screwing itself so what a lot of you ak nerds might have noticed is this is actually a bulged front trunnion yes this new prototype that we're doing is going to have a bulged receiver and a bulge trunnion this is a feature that's commonly found on stuff like the rpk this is an rpk front trunnion here and you'll notice that it bulges out the receiver actually bulges out with it to give it just a little bit more beef it's just a beefier front trunnion allows you just a lot more support and the rpk has it because you have you know more sustained high rate of fire this has it because it's a [ __ ] 50 cal it basically is a way to allow you to get more meat around the barrel and the locking lug area without making the entire receiver thicker because there is nothing sexier than a good bulge and to demonstrate that we have another 3d print this here is a demo section of a receiver on uh right up front here with the front trunnion in it so you can see here this part of the receiver just kind of bows out because this is where the receiver needs the most support or excuse me the training needs the most support because we're making the barrel area the barrel journal in the chamber thicker a little bit safer a lot more support probably better for longer sustained round counts and just giving it nice beefy thick threads there and so bulging the receiver and bulging the trunnion allows us to get a meteor profile on that chamber to make sure that that 50 bmg round is getting the most support that it possibly can as you can see here on the older ak-50 v2 you have trunnion up here compared to this thickness of trunnion right here and this is where it becomes very obvious that this is going to be a dummy dummy thick front training area on the v3 damn boy he thick that is a thick ass boy all this obviously for safety it's better for higher round counts and if you do have a catastrophic failure you do have a lot more support in this area so hopefully that is as non kentucky ballistics as possible but now let's move away from the front trunnion and talk about the bolt bolt carrier setup now this here is the new there's the excuse me the v2 bolt carrier but we've got a print but we're doing with the v3 and it's cool because it's got this little swoopy thing going on which is very very akin to the m76 hugo swoopy thing on the bolt carrier i'm sorry swoopy thing is about the best thing i've got to describe this but it looks really cool i think it really retains that ak aesthetic that's something that you know we're trying to struggle with because a lot of these parts are bigger they're just kind of blockier beefy they just don't sometimes you it gets so big that you lose that ak aesthetic but we're trying to keep that in the body lines as much as possible so that's why it's cool we're doing it on this one we also have our slot for the cam groove we're not done with that yet still tweaking some stuff i think we're we're getting a little bit better and and now we've got more room to work with now that we have a thicker receiver the receiver is going to be a little bit wider so we're going to have more room to play with and as well as the bulged front trunnion we also have again our three lug bolt here it fits in here and this is where it's going to engage on that cam groove you are gonna have a much bigger and much thicker uh cam pin right up here uh this is it's not gonna be that big and exaggerated uh this is still kind of like an 80 we're working on the model right now but it is going to be considerably bigger and thicker than the v2 i need to stop saying bigger and thicker in this video as you recall in the v2 firing prototype we tried to go with a roller kind of mechanism just trying to like try a couple different things that might be a little bit easier on the gun long term and get it to run a little bit better but in reality i think the best thing is just to go back to the traditional style akm lug which is what we kind of did toward the end and that's what started working a lot better and uh so really what we're doing with the v3 is just an exaggerated version of that to give it the best possible chance of working right out of the gate now another thing that we're looking at on the bolt carrier that is different than uh the akm or the ak-50 previous iterations uh the of the prototypes is the the piston up front we're having problems with disassembly you know just making disassembly super easy because when this goes all the way back it's got to come up and out while this piston is still in the gas tube and captured by that front training so it just makes things a little bit difficult so one of the ways around that that we thought of is doing it like the pkm which of course is basically just an upside down belt fed ak if you really look at it it's another one of mickey k's designs what they have is a hinged piston that allows for easier disassembly when you're pulling it out of the gun i think that's a really cool concept i would love if we can make this work we're probably going to try a couple different things but this would be really really cool it clearly works for the pkm which you know that's it's a [ __ ] light machine gun in 762 by 54r based on the kalashnikov design so if it'll work there pretty good chance it'll work on the ak-50 but who knows that's why we tried this stuff now the last thing i really wanted to talk about is optic mounting and aesthetics like furniture kind of stuff and that's where shit's going to get really interesting really these are kind of like fallout 4 apocalyptic [ __ ] prototype garage build guns uh really just because these are test beds we're trying to learn the important stuff the the lock up making sure we don't explode will the rivets work will the stamped receiver work how do we guess it uh you know gas port size gas length you know different things like that and and you don't need optic mounting ship for that we're shooting it at a berm 15 feet away just we're testing function on these but that does mean that we've neglected aesthetics and we've neglected optic mounting up until now the v3 prototype i think is going to be the first one we actually try that [ __ ] out i've got a couple things i really want to try out uh we we've looked at a couple of things we've looked at a monolithic upper style dust cover we've looked at doing like an ak-12 style or at least ak-12 inspired rear dust cover and like some sort of hand guard thing up front i don't know i'm really kind of partial to that i think the ak style ak-12 style thing would be really cool just to kind of you know pay homage to again just different parts of the kalashnikov throughout the years and just like taking the bits and pieces that we like i think that's cool of course we're gonna have to do some sort of recoil pad something in the rear uh because this next model if it does work the way it's supposed to or even close to the way it's supposed to oh i'm gonna be firing this [ __ ] from the shoulder all right it has killed me not firing this one well no it hasn't killed me um and i believe that's kind of the point but i really want to i [ __ ] fired the v1 firing prototype from the shoulder like i said probably a bit too early but now i've got all you guys and i'm doing content for you and i want to stay alive for as long as possible to keep doing dumb [ __ ] and so that's why we kind of played it safe on this one this is you know tripod fired but this next prototype i really really want to shoot it from the shoulder because this one i don't know i got a really good feeling about the v3 i really hope that statement age as well anyway yeah hopefully this is cool for you guys you guys get to see again like basically a gun be designed and built in real time as it happens and of course this isn't my full-time gig you know i've got to do two pieces of content for you guys got all the shop work stuff other i've got other [ __ ] going on but i love being able to sit down and just work on this stuff and make sure that this is just kind of never forgotten about which i don't know how it could be because you guys never [ __ ] let me forget about it this [ __ ] is not a forgotten weapon ian hands off i'm not done yet but i don't know i think stuff like this is kind of cool and uh just it's cool to see what's coming up on the horizon and i am super super [ __ ] excited to put this next prototype together there's a couple other design features that i really not ready to talk about yet just because i don't know how they're gonna pan out but i guess we'll figure that out when we're ready to uh just eat this [ __ ] into a firearm and see what happens anyways guys i hope you like these kind of in-depth nerd nerd-out sit-down sessions talking about new parts and some of the different design ideas that we're thinking about and i've got really just the way it's going so far i've got really high hopes for this v3 firing prototype one way or the other i think we're going to learn a lot and learning is kind of all we can hope for at this point this project because people kind of forget building semi-automatic 50 bmg weapon systems kind of something that you know big multi-million dollar companies do or do with defense funding or or countries do this isn't usually something that's done by a couple of you know [ __ ] in a garage but here we are trying our best and
