uh so so so so so so so so so so so so good morning my friends we come together as one family of saint jude the apostle the name of the father and the son of the holy spirit amen by the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit my friends we've begun the wonderful season of lent a time to spend about six weeks or so going on retreat stepping out of the busyness of our lives preparing ourselves for the great feast of easter so let's take a moment to be prepared for the word of god and the presence of christ in eucharist by looking back in our lives and simply asking god to forgive us of all those times that we may have sinned let us kneel lord jesus you are the living word of god calling us to repentance lord have mercy lord jesus you are the lord of life calling us out of the death of sin christ have mercy lord jesus you are the savior of the world calling us to new life with you lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us and forgive us our sins and bring us all in everlasting life amen let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy lent that we may grow an understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priests shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering airman who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into his country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord please respond be with me lord when i am in trouble you who dwell in the shelter of the most high who abide in the shadow of the almighty say to the lord my refuge and fortress my god and whom i trust no evil shall befall you nor shall affliction come near your tent for to his angels he has given command about you that they guard you in all your ways upon their hands they shall bear you up lest you dash your foot against a stone you shall tread upon the asp and the viper you shall trample down the lion and the dragon because he clings to me i will deliver him i will set him on high because he acknowledges my name he shall call upon me and i will answer him i will be with him in distress i will deliver him and glorify him r a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord my friends the lord be with you this is a reading from the holy gospel according to luke for it's your lord filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hand they will support you lest you dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time my friends the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ i remember giving a homily a while back to the school kids and and it might have been on this gospel or maybe one of the other gospel translations of satan tempting jesus and i was sharing with them about the common phrase you know speak of the devil and for whatever reason whenever this phrase is used it's it's when maybe we're talking about someone and they walk into the room and then we say oh speak of the devil i was sharing with the kids that the entire phrase really is speak of the devil and he will appear and i told him that i believe that the meaning of that phrase is that the more that we talk about satan or worry about him or think of him or whatever the more power we are giving him and the only way that satan has any power on this earth is if we give it to him so i was trying to tell the kids don't speak about the devil don't even think about him and he won't appear because we're not giving him any power sadly enough maybe you'll agree with me with each passing day i really believe satan is very real he is alive and well and and living among us because we see so much of it in people's behavior or in certain events in our lives i mean just look what putin is doing to the people of the ukraine he might very well be satan himself you know what about those guys that flew the planes into the world trade center all those years ago all in the name of god they did that this ms-13 gang members that brutally brutally terrorize innocent people just now walk the streets of new york or chicago you know and people being just destroyed and attacked you know the innocent elderly it's unbelievable evil is alive and well in our country in our world and it cannot be written off as oh well you know some of them are really mentally disturbed well many yes so many others no they're just plain evil the next time maybe during land a lot of people do next time you watch mel gibson's passion of the christ which accurately and graphically portrays the last 12 hours of jesus's life take notice next time you see it take notice of the slithering hooded creature that just appears everywhere in the in the back of the crowd during the scourging quietly walking in the background with jesus as he's carrying the crossbeam up to calvary is jesus dying on the cross and i really believe that when he did this movie mel gibson was trying to drive home two points that satan was present at the darkest time in human history which was the final hours of jesus life and the truth that satan is present throughout our world slithering around throughout our lives now with that in mind luke i think is telling us today that jesus showed us the way to conquer satan is to never give him any power saint james once wrote resist the devil and he will flee from you luke tells us filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during these days and when they were over he was hungry jesus hadn't done a thing yet hadn't preached a single word hadn't cured anyone hadn't called anyone yet to even follow him he had just been baptized by john in the jordan and a few days before that he was probably making a table or a chair as a carpenter but he was filled with the holy spirit and was led by the spirit talk about having armor luke points out specifically that he was hungry emphasizing the reality that jesus is fully human and he hungers as we do luke introduces us to the presence of satan the devil at the very beginning of jesus's ministry and mission the devil challenges jesus divinity to take away his human hunger remember not eating a thing for a month and 10 days the devil offers him power over the whole world the devil finally challenges jesus as the son of god to use his own power to protect himself jesus hadn't done a single thing yet nothing hadn't preached a word hadn't healed a leper of any kind nothing and he hadn't eaten a thing for a month and 10 days probably putting him in the most vulnerable position he'd ever been in in his 30 years so far but again as luke says filled with the holy spirit and led by the spirit jesus conquered and dismissed whatever power satan thought he had not just with the scriptures but jesus conquered satan mostly with his human strength and determination and powerful faith in his father and in himself as the human son of god filled with the holy spirit jesus the messiah son of god didn't really conquer the power of satan himself jesus of nazareth the son of mary and joseph did the conquering of evil was pure human when the devil finished every temptation he departed from him for a time he'd be back he'd be back time and time again he'd be there in the garden of gethsemane he'd be there at the scourging or as jesus thirsted on the cross as he carried the cross and i'm sure he was smiling when they put jesus into the tomb but when they found the tomb empty satan would realize that jesus did it to him again jesus pushed satan back again and again and forever my friends evil does exist it is very real and each and every one of us faces it every single day of our lives that is a reality that is how life is as we know it period and a discussion at the very same time it's nothing to worry about nothing even to fear not people of real faith real christian faith because the human christ showed us how to conquer it he showed us how to push back the world has become a very secular very sinful place to be sure and truth be told it always was always because the human person can be very weak and choose to give in to the weakness probably in these times more than ever before but we're only human is a gutless cop-out it's a statement spoken from weakness jesus humanity pushed satan back daddy didn't do it for him jesus knew that the spirit was within him and around him and he pushed satan back jesus did the son of joseph and mary we are every bit as human as jesus's we have the same very same spirit within us evil is real evil is here in our world evil is in our own lives we can push it back just as hard as jesus did i can the son of art and jeanette you can too i wish you godspeeds as the new apostles striving for real and true faith together we profess our beliefs in the god of creation let us use the apostles creed i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended to hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he is sent into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen my friend saint paul tells us that everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved we call upon the name of the lord in this assembly today as we call to mind our needs and the needs of our sisters and brothers throughout the world please respond hear us o lord for the church that through fasting prayer and almsgiving we may help to satisfy the physical and spiritual hunger of our neighbors around the world we pray to the lord for world leaders and others in position of authority that they may work for a quick end to the war in the ukraine and that the holy spirit will protect all those who are threatened by the war we pray to the lord for those who suffer from hunger or malnutrition day in and day out that they may know the grace of god through the efforts of those working for an equitable distribution of resources we pray to the lord hear us o lord for those preparing for the sacraments of initiation during this lenten season especially arabelle cubit michaela falbo nevia hinman paisley root declan kinsley and maddox larson ashland and taylor mox and will shaffer whom we send to celebrate their election this day that they may know our support and god's grace as they become formally enrolled into the ranks of those to be initiated into the church this easter we pray to the lord for bishop troutman who served as a shepherd of god's flock that he may be given a place in the heavenly liturgy we pray to the lord hear us o lord for those who have gone before us that the power of god's grace may bring them to the fullness of glory especially for john patrick keck for whom this mass is offered we pray to the lord hear us o lord for all the prayer requests through the prayer line and intention book for our needs and intentions that we now recall in our hearts may these prayers be united with those of jesus mary and joseph saint jude our patron and all the saints we pray to the lord r god guide us as we wander through the desert of temptation losing awareness of your constant care sustain us on our lenten journeys as we make these prayers to you through your son and our savior jesus christ our lord amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we've received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed be god forever blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we've received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become for us our spiritual drink blessed be god forever pray my friends that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at our hands the praise and glory of his name for our good and good of all his holy church give us the right dispositions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so the company of angels and saints we sing him of your praise as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord and from the world's beginning are ceaselessly at work so that the human race may become holy just as you yourself are holy look we pray upon your people's offerings and pour out on them the power of your spirit that they may become the body and blood of your beloved son jesus the christ in whom we too are your daughters and sons indeed though we once were lost and could not approach you you loved us with the greatest love for your son who alone is just handed himself over to death and do not disdain to be nailed for our sake to the wood of the cross but before his arms are outstretched between heaven and earth to become the lasting sign of your covenant he desired to celebrate the passover with his disciples as he ate with them he took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread gave it to them saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended knowing he was about to reconcile all things in himself through his blood to be shed on the cross he took the chalice filled with the fruit of the vine and once more giving you thanks handed the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it but this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of your son jesus christ who is our passover and our surest peace we celebrate his death and resurrection from the dead and looking forward to his blessed coming we offer you who are our faithful and merciful god this sacrificial victim who reconciles to you the human race look kindly most compassionate father on those you unite to yourself by the sacrifice of your son and grant that by the power of the holy spirit as we partake of this one bread and one chalice that we may be gathered into one body in christ who heals every division be pleased to keep us always in communion of mind and heart together with francis our pope lawrence our bishop and all the other bishops and clergy and religious help us to work together for the coming of your kingdom until the hour when we stand before you saints among the saints in the halls of heaven with the blessed virgin mary the mother of god joseph her beloved husband with jude and the blessed apostles and all the saints and john keck and all of our deceased sisters and brothers whom we humbly commend to your mercy then freed at last from the wound of corruption and made fully into a new creation we shall sing to you with gladness the thanksgiving of christ who lives for all eternity through him with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen jesus taught all of us to call god our father now we have the courage to pray our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give to you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always and we share that peace with each other lamb of god take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace so behold the suffering servant the lamb of god who takes away all of the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed so so um so so so the public visitation for bishop troutman i believe begins today 1 30 at our lady of peace and goes until about six i think and then there is a mass tonight at seven o'clock uh bishop percival will be presiding at four bishop trauma for the public his funeral tomorrow is at one o'clock but it's only for the priest and some invited family because half the cathedral is being renovated so there's a public mass tonight if you choose to go tonight for mass you are able to receive communion a second time since you fully participated in it monday tomorrow night our mom's group will be meeting at six o'clock in the founders room all moms are welcome to attend we have extra confessions wednesday morning from 9 until 10 in the chapel we begin our speaker series our london speaker series this thursday at 7 o'clock our speaker's father nick rau who is the director of clergy personnel and a wonderful presenter the speakers are are presenting on the eucharist in our lenten journey uh three great speakers this one thursday and it's in the context of evening prayer uh friday night we have stations of the cross and with benediction at 7 pm and next saturday the 12th is the annual women's conference and it's not too late ladies to sign up for it we are hosting it here at saint jude's there are two wonderful speakers and there's information that pulling about it so ladies please sign up there's still time to do so and i think it goes from maybe nine until about one o'clock on saturday let us pray re renewed now with heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope increased and charity strengthened we pray o lord that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live by every word which proceeds from your mouth through christ
