morning welcome to saint jews as we begin the mass please take a moment to silence or turn off all cell phones and please join in singing our lenten opening you'll find the music sheets in the pews please join in singing god of creation please stand [Music] god of creation giver of life be the light in our darkness grant us peace in our strife show us your mercy give us new births you have made us your children to be fruit our leaders [Music] lord i redeemer feeler of souls be the hope that restores us with your touch make us whole hear we partake in your feast of love give us strength on our journey with your body and blood crease [Music] hey [Music] holy comforter [Music] raise us up from the ashes and create us again [Music] a we come together as one family of saint jude the apostle the name of the father the son of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit my friends coming together as one holy people we remember the times when we have failed to live the gospel call we ask for the mercy of god who is full of gentleness and love let us kneel [Music] jesus christ pour out good morning gangs happy lent great gospel today jesus is in the desert and he's here for about a month and a half but he's with the devil and this guy is scary and this guy is so full of baloney and he's trying to tempt jesus to turn away from his father and he doesn't get away with it naturally wouldn't it great lesson for all of us because jesus shows us how to push back on the devil so go share this word with each other with our prayers and our peace [Music] so [Music] [Music] a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord [Music] be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray you who dwell in the shelter of the lord most high who abide in the shadow of our god say to the lord my refuge and fortress the god in whom i trust be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray no evil shall befall you no pain come near for the angels stand close by your side guarding you always and bearing you gently watching over your life be with me lord when i am in you salvation and joy be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and soul is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] glory to you word of god lord jesus christ glory to you word of god lord jesus christ your words o lord our spirit and lies you have the words of everlasting life glory to you word of god lord jesus christ [Music] my friends the lord be with you this is a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to the lord filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days but when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory where it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god him alone shall you serve then he led him up to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and he said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time my friends the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ i remember giving a homily to the school kids a while ago and it might have been on this gospel or one of the other gospel translations on the tempting of jesus by satan and and i was sharing with them we were talking about the the common phrase speak of the devil and maybe i brought it up here once before but for whatever reason the phrase is often used when you know maybe we're talking about someone and they walk in the room and oh speak of the devil and i was sharing with the kids what the rest of the phrase is speak of the devil and he will appear is the whole phrase and i told them that that i believe that the meaning of that phrase is that the more we talk about the devil or worry about him or think of him or whatever the more power that we are giving to him and the only way that satan has power on earth is if we give it to him so i was telling the kids just don't speak of the devil and he won't appear sadly enough maybe you'll agree with me with each passing day i really do believe i really believe satan is very real he is alive and well and living among us because we see so much of it in people's behavior or in certain events of our lives i mean just just look at what putin is doing to the people of the ukraine he just may very well be satan himself or what about this this ms-13 gang that's been around for years the brutality of what they do to innocent people walk around the streets of new york or chicago today all these people just the elderly getting attacked just by being innocent they just get attacked evil is alive and well in our country in our world and it cannot be written off as well you know some of them are probably mentally disturbed well many yes yes so many more no they're just plain evil pure evil if you happen to watch it again during lent mel gibson's passion of the christ and that movie accurately portrays and very graphically the last 12 hours of jesus's life if you watch it again take note of the slithering hooded creature that's neither male or female that's just kind of appears everywhere it's in the back of the crowd at the scourging it's kind of walking alongside jesus as he's carrying the crossbeam to calvary he's there with jesus dying on the cross he's around below the cross and i believe mel gibson did this to try to drive home two points satan was present at the darkest time in human history which is the final hours of jesus's life and the truth that satan is present throughout all of our world and all of our lives just slithering around us so with that in mind i believe luke is telling us today that jesus showed us the way to conquer satan is to never give him any power saint james once wrote resist the devil and he will flee you luke tells us filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during these days and when they were over he was hungry jesus hadn't done anything yet hadn't preached a single word hadn't cured anyone hadn't called anyone to follow him yet he had just been baptized by john in the jordan and probably a few days before that he's probably making a table or a chair as a carpenter but he was filled with the holy spirit and was led by the spirit talk about having armor luke points out specifically that he was hungry emphasizing the reality that jesus is fully human and he hungers as we do luke introduces also right now the presence of satan the devil himself at the very beginning of jesus mission and ministry the devil challenges jesus divinity to take away human hunger remember jesus is not eating anything for a month and 10 days the devil offers him power over the whole world the devil finally challenges jesus as the son of god to use his own divine power to protect himself jesus hadn't done a thing yet and preached a word hadn't healed a single leper he hadn't eaten a thing for a month and 10 days probably now being the most vulnerable that he's ever been in his 30 years of life but again as luke says filled with the holy spirit led by the spirit jesus conquered and dismissed whatever power satan thought he had not with just the scriptures but jesus conquered satan mostly with his human strength and determination and powerful faith in his father and in himself as the human son of god filled filled with the holy spirit jesus the messiah son of god didn't really conquer the power of satan and himself jesus of nazareth son of joseph and mary he did the conquering of evil was purely human when the devil finished every temptation he departed from him for a time he'd be back he'd be back time and time again he'd be there in the garden jesus was in his agony he'd be there on the way to calvary he be there as he thirsted on the cross and i'm sure satan smiled as they put jesus in the tomb but when they found the tomb empty satan would realize that jesus did it to him again jesus the human jesus pushed satan back again and again and forever my friends evil does exist it is very real and each and every one of us faces it every single day of our lives that is a reality that is life as we know it period and the discussion at the very same time there's also nothing to worry about it's also nothing to fear if we are people of real christian faith because the human christ showed us how to conquer it he showed us how to push back the world has become a very secular sinful place to be sure especially our society and truth be told it always was because the human person can be very weak and human person can choose to give into the weakness and usually does probably more in these times in our society than ever before but we're only human is a gutless cop-out it is a statement spoken from weakness jesus's humanity pushed satan back daddy didn't do it for him he knew the spirit was with him and within him and he pushed satan back the human son of god the son of joseph and mary we are every bit as human as jesus was we have the same spirit within us evil is real evil is in our world and it is in our lives we can push back on it just as hard as jesus did we can me the son of art and jeanette you can too i wish you god's peace as the new apostles striving for real and deep faith together we profess our beliefs in the god of creation let us use the apostles creed i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under his father died was buried he descended to hell on the third day from the dead he ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of god father almighty from there he was on the judge of living in the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sin the resurrection of god saint paul tells us that everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved we call upon the name of the lord in this assembly today as we call to mind our needs and the needs of our sisters and brothers throughout the world please respond hear us o lord for the church that through fasting prayer and almsgiving we may help to satisfy the physical and spiritual hunger of our neighbors around the world we pray to the lord hear us lord for our world leaders and others in positions of authority that they may work for a quick end to the war in the ukraine and that the holy spirit will protect all of those who are threatened by the war we pray to the lord for those who suffer from hunger or malnutrition day in and day out that they may know the grace of god through the efforts of those working for an equitable distribution of resources we pray to the lord for those preparing for the sacraments of initiation during this lenten season especially arabelle kubit declan kinsley and maddox larson ashley ashlynn and taylor mose and will shaffer whom we send to celebrate their election this day that they may know our support in god's grace as they become formally enrolled in the ranks of those to be initiated into the church this easter we pray to the lord hear us for bishop troutman who served as a shepherd of god's flock that he may be given a place in the heavenly liturgy we pray to the lord for those who have gone before us that the power of god's grace may bring them to the fullness of glory especially for james hellman for whom this mass is offered we pray to the lord for all the prayer requests through the prayer line and intention book for our needs and intentions that we now recall in our hearts may these prayers be united with those of jesus mary and joseph saint jude our patron and all the saints we pray to the lord hear us loving god guide us as we wander through the desert of temptation losing awareness of your constant care sustain us on our lenten journeys as we make these prayers to you through your son and our savior jesus christ the lord amen our offertory hymn is number 904 duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining forty long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaimed [Music] holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full are full of your glory [Music] blessed is he who comes who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy o lord and from the world's beginning are ceaselessly at work so that the human race may become holy just as you yourself are holy look we pray upon your people's offerings and pour out on them the power of your spirit that they may become the body and the blood of your beloved son jesus the christ in whom we too are your daughters and sons indeed though we once were lost and could not approach you you loved us with the greatest love for your son who alone is just handed himself over to death and did not disdain to be nailed for our sake to the wood of the cross but before his arms were outstretched between heaven and earth to become the lasting sign of your covenant he desired to celebrate the passover with his disciples as he ate with them he took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread gave it to them saying take this all choose to attend that mass you are able to receive communion a second time because you fully participated in that his funeral is tomorrow at one o'clock at the cathedral it will be live stream but because of the seating and the fact half the cathedral is under construction inside it's only for clergy and some family invited guests that but it will be live stream from the cathedral tomorrow night our mom's group will be meeting at six o'clock in the founders room all moms of any age are welcome to join uh there'll be extra confessions on wednesday morning from 9 until 10 in the chapel we begin our lenten speaker series this week father nick rao our clergy personnel director former brick of education um we'll be presenting at seven o'clock in the context of evening prayer um all the speakers are talking about the eucharist on our lenten journey so a great speaker uh this week seven o'clock thursday night friday evening at seven we have stations of the cross with benediction and the next saturday the 12th is the annual women's conference and we are hosting it here at st jude's ladies there's still time to sign up for the great two great speakers presenting this year still plenty of time to sign up let us pray renewed now with heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope increased and charity strengthened we pray o lord that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live by every word which proceeds from your mouth through christ our lord amen the lord be with you mighty god bless us all the father the son and the holy spirit amen
