graham whatever the thing is on on the week today's readings are beyond challenging they really help us to move from our earthy and earthly stuff to the more heavenly loving those who don't love us forgiving those who do the wrong thing to us showing mercy not judging challenging challenging readings today but let's break them open through the grace of the spirit as we invoke god now to be with us in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit the lord be with all of you after that wicked long intro take a breath settle the spirit and let's just be in each other's presence and in the presence of that source of mercy kindness and forgiveness lord jesus you show us the way that you're interested in lord have mercy christ jesus you remind us to live by the golden rule to do unto others as we'd have them do unto us christ have mercy and lord jesus you tell us to take the extra step to actually love our enemies pray for those who mistreat us and bless those who curse us lord have mercy so may our good and loving god then have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to new and eternal life [Music] is [Applause] [Music] we give you thanks for your great glory [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] mercy on us [Music] have mercy on [Music] [Applause] [Music] with the holy spirit the father [Music] so let us pray almighty god grant that always pondering spiritual things each of us may carry out both in what we do and what we say that which is pleasing good right and true all through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever all right i'm going to give you a little uh pre what is it prelude forward a little trailer something like that the reading that leticia is going to proclaim now listen to it on the deeper levels as to whatever it is that goes on in david's heart and david's mind when he makes his decision and then as we sing the beautiful psalm hearing how god is so merciful let's be reminded that god's much more merciful with us than we are with each other as we hear that second reading we hear about earthly things and i know what i tend toward and heavenly things and how we bridge that gap especially when it comes to forgiveness and mercy and then the gospel is going to knock your socks off and it's going to challenge every single one of us to look at how we see each other how we forgive and follow jesus a reading from the first book of samuel in those days saul went down to the desert of zif with three thousand picked men of israel to search for david in the desert of zif so david and abishai went among saul soldiers by night and found saul lying asleep within the barricade with his spear thrust into the ground at his head and abner and his men sleeping around him abhishai whispered to david god has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear i will not need a second thrust but david said to abishai do not harm him for who can lay hands on the lord's anointed and remain unpunished so david took the spear and the water jug from their place at saul's head and they got away without anyone's seeing or knowing or awakening all remained asleep because the lord had put them into a deep slumber going across to an opposite slope david stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from abner son of nur and his troops he said here is the king's spear let an attendant come over to get it the lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness today though the lord delivered you into my grasp i would not harm the lord's anointed the word of the lord [Music] oh is [Music] is [Music] [Music] is [Music] bless the lord o my soul bless the lord [Music] is [Music] is [Music] o heals everyone of [Music] yours your life from the grave [Music] is [Music] the lord is compassionate and gracious [Music] [Applause] he does not treat us according to our sins [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] just so far from us does he remove our transgressions [Music] as a father has compassion on his children the lord's compassion [Music] [Applause] [Music] a reading from the first letter of paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam a life-giving spirit but the spiritual was not first rather the natural and then the spiritual the first man from the earth earthly the second man from heaven as was the earthly one so also are the earthly as is the heavenly one so also are the heavenly just as we have borne the image of the earthly one we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one the word of the lord so [Music] foreign foreign your words o lord give joy to my [Music] your heart is light to my eyes my the lord be with you this is a reading and it's from the holy gospel according to luke so proclaim the gospel if something sticks with you or challenges you speaks to you in any way just let it do its thing all right hang on to that this is very challenging stuff today jesus said to his disciples and we are the modern day disciples to you who hear what i say love love them love your enemies actually do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you and pray for those who mistreat you to the person who smacks you in the face who strikes you on one cheek offer the other as well and for the person who takes your green cloak give them your white one too don't even withhold your tunic just give to everyone who asks of you and from someone who takes what is yours don't demand it back do to others as you would have them do to you for if you love somebody who loves you what credit is that to you i mean even sinners love those who love them or if you do good to somebody who's good to you so what even sinners do the same or if you lend money to somebody and you expect repayment what credit is that to you even sinners led to sinners and get back the same amount but instead love your enemies actually do good to them lend and expect nothing back do this and your reward will be great you'll be a child of the most high for god himself is kind to the ungrateful and to the wicked so be merciful just as god is merciful with us had enough there's more this is tougher ready stop judging and you won't be judged stop condemning and you won't be condemned forgive and you'll be forgiven just give and gifts will be given to you a good measure packed together shaken down and overflowing will be poured into your lap for the measure with which we measure will in turn be measured out to us the gospel the challenging good news of the lord anyone want to take a stab at this one huh talk about the internal combustion that goes on in this guy and i'm i'm i don't want to project my stuff onto you but i'm i'm assuming and i'm i'm wondering if if we don't all wrestle with this on on some level the earthly and the heavenly so to speak i don't know about you but when somebody does wrong to me there's this earthly and earthy response usually comes out verbally to start not for prime time church watchers though huh this is challenging and it's challenging on a good day when we don't have any major infractions against us happening when life has been going pretty smoothly and we can keep this up in our heads and just think about it but when you and i or any of us have had an awful awful thing happen to us to our families to our kids and we hear these words forgive love your enemy pray for those who've taken someone or something from you brings it to a whole nother level huh it's seemingly easy to get up here and speak from the middle aisle and talk about this stuff and we keep it all up here but when it sinks down to here and then into our actions that's that movement of the second reading the heavenly and the earthly that great challenge within us i don't know about you but sometimes it's hot enough to love those who we really do love and who love us never mind loving your enemy there are all kinds of dynamics there's all kinds of drama that goes on with friendships and families and relationships people we work with and interact with all the time sometimes that's a challenge right and on the deepest level we truly truly do love each other but it gets a little turbulent up at thirty square feet you know sometimes you know and in relationships but to actually love your enemy to turn the other cheek it's antithetical to i think our dna or at least mine you want to come back with something more you want to protect yourself you want to teach a lesson i want to show them something and get up over on them and yet these readings today are saying god's interested in something entirely different so there may be a piece of us today that rejects what we're hearing and that's where i know in my own self i'm calling the holy spirit open my mind open my heart help me to help me to get this and to buy into this and i want all of us to do that so that we can be free in that process that god is always involved in do you know who clarence jordan is or was clarence jordan died in 1969 he was a farmer he was a new testament greek scholar he was the founder of the koinonia farm down in southwest georgia i think and one of the early founders of habitat for humanity jordan says jesus knew that there were people who couldn't be loved and he loved them right on now i should just sit down leave us with that to think about it to ponder it to pray it he knew there were people not that were hard to love that they they couldn't be loved and he loved them right on that doesn't compute with my head and lots of times with my heart so if we look at the cross that beautiful bronze recently re-dipped cross that ain't what the cross was like that he hung on right it's an instrument of torture it's the lethal injection it's the guillotine it's the firing squad it's the electric chair and from that place even to people that he knew couldn't be loved who didn't get it what are the last words before he says i commend my spirit i'm coming back home to you it was only a a 33-year experiment wood that had gone 99 years and people got the message of today what does he say father what forgive them because what they don't know what they're doing they have no clue i'm in the business i say the words all the time we're coming into lent soon we're going to go through good friday and hear these words we do it every time we come to mass but they they never seem to really sink in here i don't know if i could do that i don't know if i want to do that remember one of those forgiveness homilies i said not just praying for the grace to forgive but i remember saying there was something that i thought well help me to want to forgive and that still wasn't enough never mind help me to forgive help me to want to forgive help me to want to want to even want to begin to forgive it can be on that deep subterranean level it's a process and here he is from the cross in that pain father forgive them they don't know what they're doing can you guys turn the volume down just a little bit please clarence jones says he loved them right on he knew that there were people who would respond to him with sneers and spit and nails and spears he knew about these unlovable characters and he knew them quite well he knew what they'd do to you he knew that they'd come out they'd hang you on a cross if you love them the way that jesus loves but he still says to us today you're gonna have to love them and then if you think of an infraction minor or major a huge loss in your life a huge injustice and pain it's like a thunderstorm between the heat and the cold that erupts i love you god love you jesus i hear these words this pain this loss this unimaginable thing that's happened in my family to myself my kids i i don't know where to go or how to do it i think that's the place that most of us find ourselves we struggle with the little things and forgiving one another never mind the biggest things look at the mercy that david had on saul i love it first of all david chose mercy to saul twice it was one of the readings earlier this week it said and i'm not making this stuff up i'm not being fresh little earthy but it's real it says saul went into a cave to relieve himself rosario you read the reading so you know right and he went into so he's in a pretty vulnerable position right and david sneaks up king david and while he's doing his business takes his cloak and takes everything sneaks out and then saul realizes rut ro that could have been it for me but david showed mercy and then we get today they show up and they're all sleeping and i love it abishai whispers to david oh my god god delivered him you he delivered him your enemy into our grasp this day let me just nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spirit i'm not gonna need a second thrust mercy shows mercy why do we get that story today because most of us would take that spear it's all over the power threat everything gone mercy mercy such a difficult thing for us to get for me to get now as i'm talking i i know stuff is coming up in each of us about people or ruptures that haven't been repaired about grudges and resentments that we're holding i know that stuff's coming up come holy spirit man seep into this place begin to heal and change our hearts to the great losses that we have david having mercy on saul reminds us this is how god is with you and me and again i can know it up here in my head but when it comes down here to the heart level and i'm still experiencing horrific pain about the loss and the injustice that happens to us or our families or our kids it's a very difficult thing to reconcile that's why we're reminded mercy love forgiveness being taken from having someone taken from us being taken advantage of being cursed hated or mistreated or misunderstood all need to be repaid in a different way when we repay somebody with what they've done to us whose code is that whose law is that anyone eye for an eye who said that himmer robbie right hammurabi's code eye for an eye jesus comes in and ushers in a new code no love your enemies pray for those who persecute you what yeah if somebody takes something to yours give it back if they take your pataguchi give them your lululemon you know no way a little humor you know somebody's actually going to steal and it's and now you give them something more you know what one of the most powerful and evocative scenes i saw in a play or a musical was les miserables remember he stole something the bread whatever it was he stole the candle sticks i forget what the heck it was and when they they got them they bring them back and the bishop sees what's going on this is a good one for bishops i'm pulling back right now i'm pulling it right back all right mercy mercy and when he's about to be thrown in jail the bishop says oh no i gave that in fact you forgot this the other candlestick or whatever you know i know the stuff is real i'm sitting there in the theater watching and all of a sudden it's like where do those tears come from where they come from they come from deep within the spirit that knows that mercy and compassion and forgiveness is what god's interested in so love your neighbors do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you and pray for those who mistreat you if somebody smacks you in the face turn the other cheek who's going to do that it goes against every fiber in our dna i grew up if anybody ever does that to you you pop them back and then they'll never bother you again i still have it in me and then on sundays peace be with you the lord be with you you know and how about praying for those who persecute you and bless those who curse you and i've said this before but i turn into a different person in the car in boston it's crazy and the first words usually out of my mouth are something like thank you but not exactly i respond verbally in an earthy way and then digitally sometimes and it's not the full five finger wave huh sometimes it's not even a full peace sign you with me i'm being honest but i experimented because i think god's got a great sense of humor and as soon as those words came out i also said and god bless you so thank you and god bless you huh and i knew well maybe that covers me i pray for those who have no clue what they're doing huh that's on a light level i think god's interested in making the full journey you know leave the thank you out and move just to the other thing i use that because it's a light thing in a car but what about the big stuff the heavy stuff do we begin to practice this and make our faith a practice in real ways give to everyone who asks of you i don't know about you but i go down boylston street i pick and choose who i'm going to give to and i don't think there's anything wrong with that but on some level you'll be broke by the time you get from hereford street down to clarendon and then the judgment comes in does this happen to anybody else what's she going to use it for what's he going to use it for this guy's got the same sign that the guy at the other corner had they're swapping signs you know they're just sticking under the milk carton johnny judgmental as i go back to bed in a nice warm bed with clean sheets and take a nice warm shower and press my little espresso machine come on john didn't the pope say just give stop judging look at what we spend our money on and you're going to judge and question what other people are spending their money on not advocating any kind of unhealthy behavior but we just spend it on nice things what are our addictions socially acceptable all that stuff a lot goes on in this cabeza when i'm walking down the street especially if i'm walking down the street and saying like you're going into a nice restaurant this poor son of a gun's here on a on a milk cotton maybe looking for a cheeseburger maybe looking for a beer maybe looking for something else it's challenging because others would say like well you just can't give to anyone and everything and we're enabling and we're contributing to the problem and you don't know where it's going who cares i we care but like do we want for anything why don't we again i'm throwing out i have no answers to this stuff i'm throwing out my wrestling with it so it'll connect with your wrestling with it i hope we're wrestling with this stuff if somebody takes something of yours don't demand it back i don't know but i know it's right do to others as you'd have them do to you and then jesus comes in with us listen guys he says if you love people who love you so what that's easy if you invite somebody snazzy to your house know that you're going to get invited to their snazzy house that's invite the poor bring people in who can't pay you back if you do good to somebody who's going to be good to you so what even sinners do that he says and if you lend money and expect repayment so what i want to be like hey jesus have you ever heard of interest like now it's not even just lend somebody some money and expect repayment we want interest right people make livings off of interest countries keep other countries down because of interest in loans the world economy the financial economy is i think antithetical to god's economy and by that the greek word economy comes from economos which means stewardship of the house so what god's interesting in the household of humanity isn't interested isn't the same as what the financial institutions are interested in in the stewardship of the house but this is the the world in which we live it's the world in which jesus lived that's why he says this stuff i don't mean to derail anybody who's in finance right now in your in your senior year at college and your parents have spent all this money and all that kind of stuff right no we gotta the question is how do we use our finances to the betterment of others and helping others whether it is a handout and charity whether it is empowerment and helping people to get started and working toward justice your enemies do good to them lend expecting nothing back easy no unbelievably difficult when it hits the hot level and we have awful losses but then jesus says this is what makes us true children of god and the reward will be great in heaven just be merciful as god is to us that psalm that was so beautifully sung by you guys talks about god listen to these words merciful and gracious as the lord slow to anger not that he's ever driven on mass aven boylston but anyway slow to anger and abounding in kindness i love this line not according to our sins what we deserve does god deal with us nor does he requite us according to our crimes so this week just as we take a temperature of where we're at with all the stuff with the the most horrific and horrible and difficult things that have happened to us and our families as we keep processing this through and as we deal with the little things the surface things that challenge us let's invite god to come into this place to continue to form and shape our hearts so that we can be free and i leave us with three things number one where do these words from the scriptures today make their home and you or me where do they land in us today where do they lie within us today how do we reconcile the earthly and the heavenly number two where can you and i this week in traffic or not practice the golden rule to do unto others as we'd have them do to us by giving and not counting the cost just leaving church today taking that risk i don't know how and not like hey how you doing what's your name no judgment not judging not condemning where can you and i forgive or begin to even want to want to want to want to be forgiving where can we love even though we don't get the love in return the way that we want it this week where can we pray for somebody who's actually said something about us who persecutes us and bless those who curse us third and last where can you and i be a little bit more merciful this week maybe with ourselves maybe with those closest to us or the perfect stranger did you see in the paper this week and on the news that 83 year old man who was driving a couple months ago and then that gang of four-wheelers and motorcycles came up just right out here right out here [Music] he just got out of the hospital 83 years old they chased him they followed him all the way down sorrow to soldiers field i'm thinking if that was my mother if that was my grandfather my father if that even me like what happens and they smash these windows and they i mean they terrorize this guy i don't i watched it on the news i could feel my blood boiling no mercy do you see how do we reconcile this when that's the reaction because that's wrong and then we get the cross forgive them they don't know what they're doing i want to hold that tension for all of us it's quite a place to be so where can you and i be merciful with others even those who hate and hurt us just as god is with us some heavy duty things for this week some heavy duty things for life with the biggest things and the smallest but let's go forward in god's mercy know you're all saying please show some mercy land the plane but this is this is challenging stuff huh let's stand let's let's profess what it is that we do believe i believe one god the father the almighty and the maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit he was incarnate of the virgin mary and became human for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and he rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen [Applause] you know when we go through the consecration in a few minutes jesus talks about his blood poured out for the forgiveness of sins it came from that cross that place of hurt vulnerability and that's what he invites us into we need that grace to enter into it with him so let's bring our prayers now asking for that grace for us as church that we may be instruments of god's mercy and compassion by sharing the forgiveness we have received we pray lord hear our prayer for forgiveness in healing in the church that god will heal the wounds that have weakened the body of christ and renew our spirits to further the mission of jesus we pray lord hear our prayer for the grace to forgive that god will help us to forgive those who have injured us and to pray for them and their needs and for freedom of heart that the spirit will free us from returning evil for evil and instead guide us in confronting evil with love in mercy we pray as we celebrate black history month let us pray for healing of racism and ethnic hatreds that all people may see the value and dignity of each and every person as a child of god we pray lord hear our prayer for all who are alienated from the church that god will heal their hurts and help them to find welcome and acceptance in our faith communities we pray for a peaceful diplomatic resolution of the war mongering and brinkmanship in ukraine we pray for the sick and the suffering among us tim ryan mark rand jane o'connor joe laporte henry force jim worth jared lynn olga chermak mary kessler john powers kathy conroy mary jane campbell jack callaresso bob duquette paul gurton debbie true baby jack landers mary churchill lochen humphrey john crocker david madigan claire maloney margaret fuller mcneal bob desantis and bob haas we pray for all who have died especially carol holland byrne lovely barbara simmons jane sullivan janet sullivan mary mclaughlin fran phillips joel maximus woods nancy lowland joseph filardi jane pimentel david mchugh and annie flaherty for their eternal peace we pray lord hear our prayer for the intentions we hold in the silence of our hearts we pray lord hear our prayer lord as this community gathers in person and virtually may our connection with you continually draw us into the ways of your son help us to be honest with ourselves especially where we're most conflicted with the words of today send forth your spirit and help us to love and forgive as we see modeled from your son on the cross and we ask all this through jesus christ our lord amen please be seated i just want to say thank you so much for your generosity toward the parish uh it's uh it's because of your support that we've been able to keep going and we invite you to take your phones and click on the flow code in your worship aid or up on your tv screen or computer screen and join the i give program it's what helps us with sustained and predictable offertory so i just want to say thanks there and then second and last um you know as the the community grows again virtually and in person so has the prayer list of people uh who are sick and asked for our prayers and folks who've died so uh for those who've been on the privilege for a long time we're just going to kind of alternate weeks so don't panic if you didn't hear your loved one's name today uh they're in certainly in my heart and in our heart in prayer but we just want to um you know there's a lot of people that are kind of coming on now too so i appreciate your understanding there and we'll be mixing everybody's names in but i'm always carrying people in our hearts in prayer so thank you [Music] of your knees [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] where there is is [Music] to [Music] make me [Music] was [Music] as we struggle to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us would you pray my friends that my sacrifice and yours may be made acceptable to god the loving the merciful father may the lord accept the sacrifice at these hands to the praise the glory of your name for our good and of all the church as we celebrate this eucharist and these mysteries lord with the observance that is certainly your due we humbly ask you that what we offer to the honor of your majesty may profit each and every one of us for eternal salvation all through jesus christ our lord give me an amen all right the lord be with you let's lift up our hearts and let's give thanks to the lord our god [Music] it's truly right and just yes it's our duty but it's our eternal salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god all through jesus christ our lord for by his birth he has brought about renewal to humanity's broken fallen state by his suffering he wipes out our sins by his rising from the dead he opens up for us the way to eternal life and by ascending to you father he unlocks the gates of heaven so let's join now with the angels the saints as we sing that hymn of praise [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] [Music] lord god even though we as human beings the whole human race is divided by dissension and discord we know that it is you who changes our hearts and minds you who prepares us for the kingdom even more so your spirit moves human hearts so that enemies begin to speak to each other adversaries join hands peoples even seek to meet together it's by the working of your power and spirit that it comes about lord that hatred is overcome by love and revenge gives way to forgiveness where there can be mutual respect so you father through your son jesus christ who comes in your name receive all blessing for he himself is the way the truth and the life that brings salvation he is the hand that you extend to us and the way by which your peace is offered so now celebrating the reconciliation that your son jesus has brought us we entreat you make holy these gifts of bread and wine through the outpouring of your spirit they may become for us the body in the blood of our lord jesus christ for when on that cross i'm sorry when before the cross he was about to give his life to set us free jesus reclined at supper took the bread in his hands and giving you thanks said the blessing he broke the bread he gave it to his disciples and he said take this all of you and eat of it this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way on that same evening he took the chalice and confessing your mercy he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new the eternal covenant it will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] sunday after sunday celebrating the memorial of the death and the resurrection of jesus who left us this the pledge of his love we offer to you god what you've given to us the gift of perfect reconciliation father we humbly beseech you to accept us together with your son and in this eucharist this saving banquet graciously endow us with his very spirit the spirit who takes away everything that estranges us from one another lord may you make us the church a sign of unity and an instrument of your peace among all people keep us in communion with francis our pope and sean our bishop the bishops the religious and your entire people and just as you've gathered us together this morning at the table of your son so also bring us together with the glorious virgin mary the mother of god joseph her spouse the apostle saint cecilia and
