so so so good morning my friends we come together so one family saint jude the apostle the name of the father and the son of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you my friends today the foreheads of christians the world over are marked with ashes a sign of sinfulness a sign of the human condition a sign of the need of god's mercy these ashes began as palm fronds palms recalling jesus triumphant entry into jerusalem where he would make the ultimate sacrifice on the cross so as symbols of triumph now we have become they've come reminders of death let these ashes inspire us to repent for our sins trusting that death can now lead to life let these ashes be assigned not only of our sin and our mortality but of our hope and god's promise of your life let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take our battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people modify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage or reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on the people the word of the lord be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me be merciful o lord for we have sinned for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against you only have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight be merciful o lord for we have sinned a clean heart create for me o lord and a steadfast spirit renew within me cast me not out from your presence and your holy spirit take me and from me be merciful o lord for we have sinned give me back the joy of your salvation and a willing spirit sustain in me o lord open my lips and my mouth shall proclaim your praise be merciful o lord for we have sinned a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin and who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord my friends the lord be with you this is a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew pray to you and jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you may you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your almsgiving may be in secret and your father who sees in secrets will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward when you pray go to your inner room close the door pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you my friends the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ this jesus was a completely different kind of teacher to them one they'd never seen anything like before and he was calling his disciples to lead an entirely different kind of life than they've ever been called to not one that's based on the law as much as one has been based on prayer service to others a life based on love taking care and giving comfort to those in the most need so if they were truly going to be his disciples then they must completely transform their lives and then follow his way of life in every way they came to believe that he was in fact the messiah son of god the christ when they waited hundreds of years to come they actually believed that but it wasn't until they saw him risen from the dead when they finally understood what all of that meant my friends our whole lives we have known the entire story of this jesus we've known about his life and his teachings his walk to calvary we know about his crucifixion and death and we know about his resurrection not back to this life but to a new and eternal one and even more we believe we believe in the very presence of god that created us we believe in his son who has saved us by his suffering and rising to new life we believe in the constant presence of the holy spirit to guide us and strengthen us while we're still here on this life in this in this life on this earth we believe all of this or we wouldn't be here so the question is very simple now what what are we going to do with these lines with what we believe it is now lent today we receive these ashes as a sign that we are going to purge our lives we're going to purify our hearts through actions of penance is that is that true is that we're gonna do are we honestly gonna do that or is this just some annual ritual that i come to get and i'll come back and get a palm in about six weeks what is this all about are we truly going to purify our lives over the next six weeks so that we can be ready for the glory of easter or the time we celebrate our own easter whichever comes first what is lent going to mean for me honestly i wish you god's peace let it stand recursive ministers that are helping could conform sisters and brothers let us humbly ask our god and father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads in penitence oh god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lenten observances they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son through christ our um so i should just stand here did i leave the mic on by any chance i said to them i should i should let them sit there and i'll read the entire new testament back here see if they notice let us pray mark with a sign of our faith let us now turn to our god with our needs and the needs of the world confident that our prayers will be heard please respond hear us o lord for the church that we may be assigned to the whole world of god's mercy by caring for the poor and forgotten comforting the grieving and imprisoned and loving and forgiving the sinner let us pray to the lord hear us that all nations may repent for aggression and violence that have brought pain and suffering to innocent people and work toward a just and lasting peace for the benefit of all we pray to the lord hear us o lord for those who are poor who fast by necessity because they cannot afford enough to eat that our lenten charity may provide them plenty now and forever we pray to the lord hear us for those who have turned away from god for whatever reason may return with their whole hearts and come to know god's grace and mercy in their lives we pray to the lord hear us o lord for all of us that our hearts may be moved to fast pray and give alms as our lord guides us to do and that those whose habits may extend beyond this lenten season we pray to the lord hear us o lord for all the people of saint jude the apostle church for whom this mass is offered we pray to the lord hear us for those who have gone before us that the power of god's grace may bring them to the fullness of glory we pray to the lord hear us for the prayer request through the prayer line and intention book for our needs and intentions that we now recall in our hearts may these prayers be united with those of jesus mary and joseph saint jude our patron and all the saints we pray to the lord hear us merciful god you are slow to anger rich in kindness relenting in punishment guide us to treat others likewise as you listen to the prayers we make through your son and our savior jesus christ our lord amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we've received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth work of human hands become for us the bread of life let's be god forever blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we've received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine work of human hands it will become for us our spiritual drink blessed be god forever pray my friends that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at our hands for the praise and the glory of his name for our good and good of all his holy church as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen my friends the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for through bodily fasting you restrain our faults raise up our minds and bestow both virtue and its rewards through christ our lord through him the angels praise your majesty dominions adore and powers tremble before you heaven and the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs and humble praise as we acclaim hope holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you there for almighty father we bless you jesus christ your son who comes in your name he himself is the word that brings salvation the hand you extend the sinners the way by which your peace is offered to us when we ourselves are turned away from you on account of our sins you brought us back to be reconciled oh lord so that converted at last to you we might love one another to your son whom for our sake you handed over to death and now celebrating the reconciliation christ has brought us we entreat you sanctify these gifts by the outpouring of your spirit that they may become the body and the blood of your son whose command we fulfill when we celebrate these mysteries for when about to give his life to set us free as he reclined its supper he himself took bread into his hands giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way that same evening he took the chalice of blessing in his hands confessing your mercy gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith save us savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free celebrating therefore the memorial of the death and resurrection of your son who left us this pledge of his love we offer you what you have bestowed on us the sacrifice of perfect reconciliation holy father we humbly beseech you to accept us also together with your son and in this saving banquet graciously to endow us with his very spirit who takes away everything that estranges us from one another may he make your church a sign of unity and an instrument of your peace among all people may keep us in communion with francis our pope lawrence our bishop all the other bishops the clergy and religious and your entire people just as you have gathered us now at the table of your son so also bring us together with the glorious virgin mary the mother of god joseph our beloved husband with jude and your blessed apostles and all the saints and all of our sisters and brothers and those of every race and tongue who have died in your friendship bring us to share with them the unending banquet of unity and a new heaven and a new earth where the fullness of your peace will shine forth in christ jesus our lord through him with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our
