20 Firesteel Ferro Rods Put to the Test!

hello YouTube it is Chris here and in today's episode we're gonna be discussing my absolute favorite fire Steel's to stick with me welcome back everybody and thank you for sticking with me like I said today we're gonna be talking about my absolute favorite fire steels for 2019 now keep in mind as big as this collection looks we actually own way way way way more we own dozens and dozens and dozens of fire steels for field-testing camping and we wanted to bring the absolute best to you guys in our videos when we go out camping and you are survival adventures now do me a favor and make sure you stick around to the end of the video because we're gonna have some awesome bonus information and tips for you at the very end these are the monsters these are the 1 inch diameter bunker-buster fire steels now this is my big ol beefy tester this is the one that's been through the wringer we actually did this as like the world's largest fire still video that you can guys can find right up there in the corner we did some full testing on this thing this thing has been through the wringer we've brought this on a ton of adventures but because it's so gosh darn big it just is not going anywhere actually bored out and made my own fat wood handle for it or you can just get a bear fair rod just as is and kind of grip down on it strike it and this thing will last you a long time if you want to use this for an inch bag it's got two covered the next section are big huge fire Steel's with nice awesome handles on them some are designed to be functional basically what I mean is they actually have fire tinder as a handle so you actually have kind of a little micro kit built-in in all inclusive all you need like is a spiny ER knife or dedicated scraper you're pretty much good to go see all these fire Steel's come from the same manufacturer they just have different handles put on them but this one is really good for gripping deer antlers really good but overall like I said my favorite is either like big huge beefy natural fat wood this was actually my 2016 video or this one this is the fire tender it's called wax wood from production hangar 51 next movie on the list is the fire steel elite firm for Direction's bushcraft the reason I like this one because this is a half-inch by nearly 8 inch fire steel some people might find this is overkill and in some cases it probably is but the reason I like it especially for like a beginner or a novice or someone who just doesn't want to fuss with spending 45 minutes starting a fire due to its extreme length you can grip it and get a full hand grip with the lanyard attached to it and you still have a good five-and-a-half to six inches to stroke down the shaft of that rod and let me tell you what you are going to be able to rock this thing in one or two pumps now next up is my all-around favorite for what I would say the best performing fire steel and in my entire collection now keep in mind this is also going to be the most expensive in this particular situation you do get what you pay for now this is the lightning strike fire steel we've covered this a ton of times we've taken this on a 30 day survival challenge this thing is a beast this thing has a fire steel built inside and this is a built in canister that actually keeps and houses a fire tender but you also have a built in scraper this is a one and all apocalypse unit if you need it to be like I said this is far more expensive than the average plunging fire steel but for the beginner or like I said someone who does not want to mess around and willing to invest into a really good fire steel this is my number one pick next on my list are what I call all-in-one fire starting kits they're very similar to like the lightning strike but they're more for the everyday person who can't afford the bunker buster prices now a lot of these these all come from different various brands this one we got on Amazon I'm not gonna I think it's Costin fire starter I'll link it down in the video description so you guys can have access to it but um basically it's designed that all of these have tinder and their handles they're also rocking pure magnesium and they have a fire steel and typically a lot of them come with scrapers these are good all-in-one kits that will get you covered for not a lot of money most of these are like thirty dollars or less in most cases but this is a new one that I want to touch on this is the extreme weather fire starter from four directions bushcraft this has the new update with the wax wood tinder which I really really enjoy given the fact that it is pletely impervious to the elements as long with the magnesium burning hot in the extreme weather cases this thing will have your back this is another one from easy fire steel easy fire starting calm it's using some type of African fat wood and it does work but I've never seen the ferocious performance and the reliability as I do with things like fat wood or the wax wood now we are moving into what I like to call like the Toyota Corolla of fire Steel's what I mean is it's for those people who have adopted the design a step to a bigger badder firesteel but they want to spend a lot of money they don't want to commit to a hefty pricetag typically what most people do is they jump into the half inch by six inch category they go okay six inches that's a really good length half inch is definitely gonna be pretty hefty just like the fire still elite it's just a little bit cheaper it's like $2 cheaper than the 8 inch fire steel but the really cool thing about the 6 inches it's pretty much the most popular when people get big fire Steel's this is where most people gravitates because it's so popular it is sparking really cool innovations this has come from a company called uber Leoben which i think is german for survival this is a hexagon shape which is the whole concept is that you can get a bigger surface area along each side of the fire steel and you'll be able to get bigger sparks I have actually not discovered that to be a hundred percent true but it is a really cool design if you go to fire still calm they also have a square one so you have circle hexagon and square as of right now which is really really neat but like I said for like 10 to 12 bucks these are a really good staple for the average Joe who wants a really good thick hardy fire steel that will not fail the next category is a little more expensive than these six inch by half inch but I call them the weather protected fire steels as you guys know Farah cerium magnesium all the components that go into making a Ferro rod or fire steel are corrosive these are people's renditions and interpretations to try to keep them protected from the elements until you need them because that will allow them to last longer now a simplest solution that I've come up with for my bear fire Steel's during testing is I just keep them in like a zipper freezer bag and I put them on my kits put them store away on shoeboxes and wherever I have them until I go out and take them where I need them where I'm making a video with them going on an adventure but these are companies they can just be strewn around because they're already protected now with that said this one comes from XO tech this is their nano striker XL I like this one because it keeps moisture and water out with the o-rings that are designed inside this is my personal everyday carry one that I keep on me because it's so small and light I don't really have to worry about it so for everyday carry this is probably the best bet but then there's a bunch of different ones this one is the GOP's spark by fire steel comm this one's really good because you have really good macro hand movements so if you're really cold you're a little bit lightheaded you need to get some fluid to boil some water but you're kind of just gross motor skills this'll work these all come from a company called sparking sharp the fire Steel's aren't super huge but they're protected this ones that actually has a little capsule designed for keeping fire tender tipped inside we have some fire tender built in there those are fat packs from wazoo survival gear but their selling point to me that makes them worthwhile as they do things like bottle openers whistles sharpener scrapers for your fire steel this little all-inclusive package that makes them fun they come in a variety of different sizes and different designs and if you like I said if you like to build small kits like I do this is probably my favorite one which is the sparking sharp mini next up is the kind of all inclusive innovation category this is where companies have been doing what they can to try to change and alter the design of what we know as the fire steel as drastically as possible by doing things of like building the strikers into the handles to just make them as slim and convenient of a package as possible while at the same time providing us with a lanyard and a really good striker for set fire steel these usually do cost a little bit more than the average fire steel but given the innovation and the technology they're trying to push into something so primitive and basic it tends to be pretty cool this is called the Farrow strike version 3 which I'm curious to know the renditions so far this is a magnesium but the handle is really really small and it's kind of goofy but I do appreciate their attempt at making a good fire steel but I have noticed that I do get a pretty good grip doing it that way and this striker is probably one of the best strikers on the market sadly they don't really sell the fire strikers by themselves I really wish they would because these would sell like hotcakes all the fire Steel's were going over are freaking molten volcanoes when it comes to striking fire Steel's which is the only reason they're in this particular episode some other ones go big and bulky they don't really care they go big or go home and they try to push it into a situation where you have room to have a bunch of different fire tinder built inside using something as simple as PVC pipe but then they try to do these little complete survival kits very similar to like the spark and sharp concept or the Smith's fire tinder that you've seen this is also a famous one but this one has a nice rubber grip on it it has a sharpener built inside but this particular fire steel may be small but holy crap when you combine it with the tongue in carbide striker it freakin lights up a shower of sparks now I love these little innovations because it can give you multiple uses in a small package if you decide that you want kind of like the most bang for your buck or the most usefulness with the most the least amount of space involved these are some really good options that I would highly recommend and last but not least these are the budget champs what I'm saying is these are basically five dollars or less and they really hit home and they do a excellent job and they also come with lanyards and scrapers which for that price point it's pretty hard to do so this one actually comes from the mini fire boss kit though you can buy these standalone on your own but if you're gonna be picking up this fire steel might as well pick up a fire kit to go along with it one that isn't a lot of military kits this was in my DFS micro survival kit this is the NATO fire striker this is the same one they put in the NATO fire kits and survival kits this one's really really good there's a lot of fakes and replicas out there from really cheap companies who do not give you a good scraper they do not give you a good ferrocerium but like I said these are really really cheap they're like $4.99 or less and for their performance to price category for what you get these are my clear favorites so for those of you made it this far this is our bonus segment these are called my fire tinder go tube space the concept is you have something that's clear and organized you can see exactly what it is unscrew it pour it out strike it with your fire steel and you're good to go now these are some fun ideas just to give you guys some fun inspiration now we did post these on Instagram so if you guys are following the solution or meeting you saw these a few weeks back now this is wax wood shavings from production anchor 51 these are some of my favorites because they're impervious to the elements now you might have to do a little bit more work with this particular one but the amount of fire-starting you get out of this is pretty impressive this is the core from 550 fire cord even if you're super wasteful it took two or three of these you'd have about 150 to 200 fires out of this lot these are fat packs from wall to survival gear like I said it'll take a little Bextra work but the fact that they're gonna be completely protect from the elements is really really nice is shreds from the fat rope stick from production anchor 51 the shreds are already pre broken down and make things just a little bit easier this is kind of the dragon's breath dynamite test tube but this is magnesium with wax wood then we have some curls you can do this with Burch the wax wood sticks and kind of curl and do your little Bush crafty thing if you like these are magnesium powder this is extremely extremely volatile with a little bit of shavings to put in to make this last a little bit longer then we have some fireplug minis that I just kind of cut in half with a pair of scissors you can stick a bunch of these in there and even if you're out for two or three weeks it last you a long time now we've got pure magnesium shavings and we got some fiber light which is just sawdust and wax built-in then we have an all-inclusive kit which is the fire plugs with the fire steel and the scraper from walls your survival gear is a fun little all-inclusive kit we decided to build for fun and then we have some fire dust this is fat wood fire dust all in all these are a really fun DIY project that I think you guys would have a lot of fun with and if you want to stick these in your own kits like your Maxpedition kits or go-bags canteen survival kits I just it's just a lot of fun to hold a lot of stuff but the big thing is is just secure they're pretty pretty tough but they also let you see exactly what's in
