hello YouTube it's Chris here and in today's episode we're gonna be discussing my favorite oversized survival knives [Applause] [Music] welcome back everybody and thank you for sticking with me now in the world of knives there are a ton and there's some people have their favorites for me I love really really big like oversized XL size knives and then I like small tiny companion eyes because I find when I'm out in the woods and over the past five months I have been very blessed to spin in upwards of 74 days out in the woods pretty consecutively and it's been a really good opportunity for me to field use infill test knives that most people don't get the chance to the very first knife I want to talk about as a knife that I wasn't sure was actually going to make this list this is the cold steel drill master and it's kind of basically a hunting knife it's kind of a pick sticker it's one of those things that as far as having as a survival knife I didn't really think too much of because as you see compared to the other knives didn't think it was gonna hold its weight but that spine right there is super super super thick with this knife having an overall blade length of about nine inches it really really holds its own because of that weight of that spine it's well over a quarter inch thick that 90 degree spine lends itself to some of those survival and bushcraft tasks we like so much that false edge is gonna be great for piercing for hunting and doing any false edge use for skinning animals or processing if you don't want to use your main edge blade I know there's actually a few people out there that do that but that guard is gonna be great for when you're actually in the field and you need to use this on a hunt you're gonna be good to go without your hand slipping but you get a little bit of a juices or uh liquid blood you know all that good stuff on there and that crates on handles gonna be really really grippy no the rectangular shape of the blade it lends itself to keep itself from rolling not the best chopper in the world but because of its full flat grind and it's very thick spine and actually if you baton the correct size pieces of wood and you don't go too big it will lend itself to splitting so if you have any build projects out in the woods this will actually do the job pretty well stuff is a newcomer to the field but the amount of time we've got to spend with it really really really hit home this is the plan a but designed by Julio Diaz by Condor knife and tool this is a new blade for 2019 and this knife is one of technically the smallest displayed lengths but it is a beast nonetheless now I feel very very blessed because as of time of filming they're not really released to the public yet and this is actually Julio Diaz his personal plan a he gave that to me so I could actually take it out in the woods and field test it we put it on my work sharp and gave it a full convex edge in this thing for the 1075 is a monster it goes out in the woods and plows through absolutely everything basically with this knife as corny as this little stupid little pitch is gonna sound and you don't need a plan B the 1075 is gonna be very very tough you're gonna have a high enough carbon content what's gonna hold an edge pretty well I know a lot of people love knives like the bush floor the primitive Bush tool by Matt Graham if you're looking for something a little bit more aggressive fide and fun this is definitely gonna give you that Crocodile Dundee vibe but it's gonna be very useful in the woods you can use this for hunting we're actually planning on taking this one and the trail master on a hawk on soon or we're gonna be using this as kind of our big stickers so the next eyes up is my C 15 or my camp 15 which means or overall length is 15 inches from Casey's knives this is a knife made from a custom knife maker companies called Casey knives they're based out of Canada or the cept Isles this is a he loves making big huge built trail knives camp knives for the woods because in the boreal forests and the very rural areas where he does moose hunts bear hunts you need a big knife that can do a lot of really hard for work and this knife is no exception is rockin Z wear which is very similar to crew wear it's just different countries of origin for the steel got a 90 degree spine very very thick bleed on the profile the very tall blade from edge to spine it hits really really really hard but with the only being an eight and a half inch blade it still lends itself to really good balance because of the way it's been designed so if you had to do fine detail work get firewood process get tender process you want to do some smaller camp chores we didn't think you could do with the big knife this knife does it with ease we took this on our 30-day survival challenge out here in Texas backing off back in November and they did an excellent job getting all the tasks I needed done without a single problem into this day it still has its original edge because that Z we're never lets up next is a knife that sentimentally speaking is very near and dear to my heart this is the mini parang by helm Forge this is another custom knife maker and he was featured on forged in fire if you guys have been regulars on my channel you've seen my second most popular video on my channel which is filming a tactical bush sword which was another knife that he actually hand forged him selves before that video was actually a customer bill that we had the privilege to actually watch and make that knife but this is a nine and a half inch blade it's only 3/16 of an inch thick using Tarot tough handles that really high saber grind and a very tall blade from right here from the edge to the spine over here lends itself to being very very choppy so if you want a smaller lightweight more compact kind of badass blade that is gonna give you machete like functions kukri like functions borderline hatchet like functions without weighing you down and giving you a super super super heavy blade this is the one I would actually recommend now it will it cost a little bit more than a traditional production knife absolutely but the ad CRV to that it's rocking and the fact that I've had this one I think a little bit longer than every other blade on this table really shows a testament to how long this high carbon steel will last ATC every two is an absolute workhorse and if you want a knife that's not gonna fail you it is backed by someone who made it by hand you're gonna have a timeless finish and it doesn't have that kind of cookie cutter vibe this is something that I think will be up your alley speaking of survival knives like I said we've been able to spend quite a few weeks in months out on the outdoors through a 30 day survival challenges and all the little adventures we've been going on here in Texas and abroad so far on the channel I've been really blessed to be able to do that and one of our sponsors for those survival trips have been a company called Oh light now Oh light is a maker of some of the top and most reliable flashlights and illumination tools on the market from headlamps torches EDC flashlights you name it they've got it we particularly love the most because of their warranty they offer anywhere between a five to ten year warranty and all their flashlights and actually from July twelfth all the way to July 16th they are gonna actually have a elite member sale which is super exciting so for those of you who like these awesome epic elite flashlights but you don't want to pay the elite prices I get you man saving money is what I'm all about on this channel so for to the next four days they're actually gonna be doing a sale on these where you can get any of these flashlights for twenty to forty percent off now this particular one that I've got is the seeker to pro this is a 3200 lumen flashlight in a very very small form-factor it is pretty freakin epic as a thrower a tactical flashlight but I like this one compared to some of the other ones because they actually finally put a new battery design in here and gave me a smaller form factor and those rubber grips right there give me a much more ergonomic feel it's a much more lightweight in my pocket so when I slip it on my pocket and actually go for a hike on the trail it doesn't take too much space at all now that we've paid the bills let's get back to the knives so the next knife up is actually gonna be the CRKT coupe this is actually an rmj tactical designed knife by CRKT this is another budget offering that is kind of along the same lines of what you guys would recognize from Kershaw this is rocking 65 M in steel it's a very budget blade at only about $40 I love this kind of TPE rubber overmold handle grip the black finish on it will help you obviously keep the blade from rusting and having any corrosion over the long term but this is almost machete like because it's so thin and as far as getting any of the heavier duty tasks done it does suffer a little bit because of the weight next up another kukri if you guys haven't noticed I like cookies now I only have two of them at the table at the moment because these are the top two performers that I've ever used now this is the Dan Hope kukri doesn't have any awesome name like Leviathan or anything just like some of the knives that if you're familiar with his work he's another custom knife maker now this particular knife is made of CPM three B this is a huge slab of CPM three B we got a 12-inch overall length we actually did a full filled review of this if you want to see a more in-depth look at that we're gonna have a video up in the right-hand corner so you can see this in depth but this blade is a monster we use this to build a primitive shelter we've done a whole bunch of stuff with this and this knife is not giving in but we attribute that to the very thick quarter-inch spine of this knife the full tang flavor and also the fact that it isn't blocking one of the best tool steels out there which is CPM 3b now if you love big blades but you also want a champagne taste on a beer budget this next knife it's gonna be right up your alley now this is something that I kind of ignored for years this is the Kershaw camp 12 the more famous kind of non redheaded stepchildren of this particular line are the camp 10 camp 14 and even the camp 18 the camp 18 was probably the one that failed among lys because it was so long it would had it probably attend to had it the most breakages but this is one of my favorites the kind of remind has that dothraki Game of Thrones knife vibe on it it's super super sick but we have a 12-inch blade now it's more of a machete but it's actually a lot thicker and because of that just ridiculous blade height it actually ends its up to be a pretty good shopper it will do a lot of the medium to heavier duty tasks pretty well and for twenty-two bucks I thought this was an absolute steal so this next one is also another knife that's near and dear to my heart so this is the fiddleback Forge Camp machete this is their 12-inch version they also make a 16 inch version now for me personally I didn't like the 16 version I've had both of them but that extra length when I would keep it on my hip it would always smack me in the knee and drive me crazy I know there's ways around that either different ways you can carry like Baldrick carry and whatnot but um this is rocking 1075 higher carbon steel just like you would for the Condor knives now if you love fiddleback forge knives you love that custom semi custom vibe but you can't or don't want to pay those three four five hundred lower prices this comes in at a very solid $100 which is a very good price point for as larger this knife it is it's right on par with some of the knives you would find from cold steel Condor and things like that now this knife was actually in our 30 day survival challenge this knife was an absolute monster this thing chopped built shelters built our table built all chairs everything we needed to do when we needed to get chopping done did excellent job now if we had to do anything much much heavier we just whipped out an axe at that point but if you need an all-purpose tool you're looking for an all-in-one kind of excel size blade but you actually want something's gonna be pretty nimble and agile this has my vote as we're rounding towards the end of this I've noticed I'm hoping you're noticing that the knives are getting a little bit bigger and this is kind of where my heart lies although really really big ones I love big knives now this is a knife that's also very near and dear in my heart because it was back in the day this is a knife that almost took my left index finger this is the Kershaw camp 14 this one literally cut me and sliced me open if you've been following my channel for about four or five years you'll know exactly where that video happened this is one of my favorites if you're just looking for overall mass performance no holds bar and you're willing to spend a little bit more still in that sub $50 price point though this one average price you're gonna be able to find this is like 40 60 bucks and for that money you're getting a hell of a knife you're getting a full tang blade the blade the the Tang runs all the way through this overmolded grip of a plastic and polymer handle the polymer handle is very very grippy you get a good guard on here your hands not gonna slip if you actually want to take this and use it as a big big pick sticker and a hunting knife you actually could use it it's a little big but it could definitely get the job done because down here in Texas if you've done any hog hunting you know for a fact that we've got a hogs that arrange anywhere between 500 to 850 pounds no joke so this thing will help you take out those small micro cows now with that said the full flat grind lent itself to be a ferocious chopper but if you need to be beat awning would you're gonna be build furniture build those primitive shelters because it's 3/16 of an inch thick is going to be a powerhouse and I feel in my personal opinion if you're gonna go for extra large size knives but you don't want the heavier weight the bigger beefier Icelandic gameofthrones mountain-sized heavyweight blades is just a little too much for you 3/16 of an inch thick I think is gonna be right up your alley now this is a knife that's newer to me I've only had this for about two months or so this is the LT right Overland machete a lot of you that our bushcraft nuts out there you guys love all the LTI right knives they make some fantastic blades now this is a knife that I bought myself off of Amazon it's a freaking fantastic chopper this handle scale is nice and rounded off it's not coke bottle shaped but it's thinly profiled a rectangular but still curved off that scalping on the handle provides a really really good grip now it is a lot thinner so when you're gonna be doing anything like batoning anything like that when you did the thin of the blade is the the harder it is to wedge between those pieces of wood when you're building furniture and stuff so things like axes thicker knifes are gonna do a much better job however where this is lacking in that particular performance it pretty much does everything else just fine you need to clear brush with this you need to get a de breeze for the bottom of your shelter pretty much anything you need to do it'll do now because of its overall thickness and overall blade length is going to be a beast of a chopper it's going to be it's kind of it's kinda this is kind of a marriage it's not perfectly a machete but it's not quite the thickness of a blade it's just in between that kind of eighth inch thick blade and a 3/16 six so they tried really hard to give you a well rounded blade that could do a lot of different things and I think they hit an absolute home run last but not least is the knife you may not be 400% familiar with or if you love kukris you're definitely familiar with the company this blade is the wasteland short sword by college blades there's actually a maker called jbs blade works who made his Moore of American tactical looking version of this and this is the Nepalese rendition of this particular one this is actually using horn for the handle and that's actually my only gonna put this blade it's full convex grind is absolute monstrous when it comes to chopping and cutting through stuff being able to sort of fire with this thing it did no problem it's very sharp a cute tip did awesome it's false edge is amazing but however when I got into the chopping category I find myself having to be forcibly using both hands to get the job done because this is something that you can fix at home or just take the handle skills off and make your own handle scales if that's something you prefer but these handles are very very very rounded and out of all the blades here this one wanted to kind of pivot and roll me much more often however if you sit here and just flatten those grinds just a little bit and make it more rectangular shape I think this would be by far my favorite extra-large knife given the fact that you're getting a quarter inch full convex grind you're getting that 5160 spring steel that we all know and love it's gonna have a lot of flex a lot of torsion a lot of strength but it's gonna be pretty easy to maintain and sharpen on the field we all know 5160 is basically one of the toughest freakin tool steels on the planet now that we've concluded our top 10 list for our favorite Excel survival task for 2019 if you see a blade that is not on this table that is your absolute favorite that is over 9 inches long we want you to try them down in the comments let us know what your favorite is and if it's something you've never seen on our channel before we want to take your feedback
