in Pittsburgh problems there again Joe and Tony will get into that story as the day progresses but let's turn to our news of the week on a happier note in Philadelphia they finally got around to raising a championship flag took him nearly a century to get it but it's sweet nonetheless meanwhile Steve Carlton turned back the Pittsburgh Pirates and by so doing picked up his two hundred and fiftieth career victory against just 169 losses quite an achievement for the man in Philly they refer to as Lefty an achievement to nearing for Tom Seaver another milestone he needs just three more strikeouts and with that Tom Seaver who will walk away from this game and directly into Cooperstown well we the 3,000 strikeout level in major leagues all-time lifts meanwhile Nolan Ryan tied and then passed Bob Gibson for third on that all-time strikeout list with this K it was his 3118 of his fabulous career Fernando Valenzuela is a long ways behind that but what a career he's got in front of him he's just 20 years old he's already to a no this year he did manage to give up a run the other night but he has given up just one run in 36 major league innings of work meanwhile Rick Langford continues to be a story on an Oakland a staff that is a story in itself while the A's are a nine and OH their staff has eight complete games a lot of experts said the A's pitchers arms would give out bottom of the first inning Tony almost hit a line drive to deep left center field and I was gonna get the ball and I woke up in the hospital next day I saw I can tell you because I had a concussion man a separated shoulder concussion or a left me off-balance about ten days my balance is weak or the separation showed nothing handicap about three months because I couldn't do anything my arm hurts so bad I couldn't Jones wasn't the only player to lose a battle with the wall at Auckland the A's Mike Heath took a beating in this 1979 game at the time there was a rule and the fact that the walls and Merkel a car and baseball had to be padded and the walls open was not padded you know that wall really cost me off a third of season last year it cost me a chance to be in the playoffs and it cost I don't know where you're gonna pitch again we're not sending up the occupation now I feel that I can fishing nah we're just gonna take a lot of time although jr. is technically on the disabled list is with the club every day Jr what kind of a throwing schedule are you keeping well basically I don't have a schedule that's chameleon work on the other day do you throw a certain number of pictures or for a certain amount of time I don't have it about 150 pigeon I don't have a same time to throw it throw every other day basically just keep myself in pretty good condition I'm gonna be right over that time come about what percentage of effectiveness would you say you're throwing at right now I think about an approach that I feel about lunch yeah the way I feel I made the throw now how about a timetable but how I have a set of timetable is yeah I'm just waiting to see day by day are you a patient very patient very patient junior thank you very much I don't need to tell you everybody in bring this back before when I'm coming back this really that's baseball it should be noted that although he's playing for Portland's triple-a farm called Louise Theon's contract can be bought by any
