you do more than one kind of writing that's why I need more than one sort of flair now there's me hardhead flair handy regular flare here's my point super hard plastic for a fine halt and kind of wine and vivid flare colors I even make carbon here's my point a flexible nylon tip for the expressive as you need to set your writing free all right head player regular flare now flare gives you both for all kinds of writing shouting the party rudely Carboni groin fingering and you know number 29 Ken singleton and the closest manager screen Bobby Grich who just took a peek over here singled and smiling now and now let's take a look at the league-leading Kansas City Royals managed by Daryl Norman Whitey Herzog as they introduced themselves that Whitey Herzog the manager and I live in the fence Mazari money Jim wolf for that play left bill from Visalia California remain Lotus centerfielder I live in Toronto Canada George Brett third base off the gun no California damn McRae they hit her even par four down Maybury first base Motown Detroit blank beyond laughing this down point blank white second base Kansas City was a career prospect the shortstop I'm from Seguin Texas Jeff Martinez catcher from Sacramento California Andy half the pitcher Phoenix Arizona [Music] 19 in a row you know something that I didn't particularly care for I think the most I ever lost was eight games in a row and I felt like I just didn't want to go out to the ballpark Steve Carlton in one year lost 19 ballgames and he just didn't want to go out there and pitch anymore after that we had something like two or three games left in the season and he was supposed to start he didn't want to push he finally did pitch the last year this season he lost his 20th throw it's something that you don't look forward to he didn't want to go out to the mound and take a chance of losing that 20th ballgame and here's Andy Hassler who lost 18 in a row he's now come back to win four in a row he was traded from the Angels to Kansas City after we was on six there you see Dave Duncan the travel catcher he's played with Cleveland he's played with Oakland and now with Baltimore defensively for Baltimore singleton and left field and poor baby in center field tonight he has been used that much because he hasn't been hitting this year Reggie Jackson in right field of course we saw the story of Reggie brood here in Baltimore in the in fear tonight dead to sensei the heir apparent of course and now he's taken over for Brooks Robinson at third base shortstop mark belanger who finally made the all-star team after 13 years in the major leagues Bobby Grich former quarterback could have played for UCLA at second base for the Orioles tonight and at first base li-mei a gentleman you face Bob Gibson many times in the National League and there you see behind the plate Dave Duncan when you've faced li-mei there you see the starting pitcher Rudy Mae no relation to Li Mei Li Mei played for Cincinnati and Houston when you faced him right he he start off with Cincinnati went to Houston and to be truthful we were really happy that he got traded out of the league because that guy was a problem li-mei rudy Mae no relation Rudi may now in his ninth year of course started the season with the Yankees came over in that 10 player deal involving a Holtzman Martinez pagan Jackson Hendricks he's 10 and 9 now he's 6 and 6 with Baltimore and his last start he beat Oakland 9 to 4 last Wednesday however he's only three and seven lifetime against Kansas City Bob when you had a lifetime record against the club I've always wondered about this how important is a lifetime record in that the club changes over the years really is that a significant statistic in baseball I don't think it means anything like you said before you go out there and you face a different ballclub just about every year for some reason or another if you have a heck of so called hex over one ball club it seems like it stays there you can throw your glove out and still beat the ball club as far as the statistics of the concern I just don't leave it up all right what about Rudy Mae how would you describe Rudy Mae as a pitcher well Rudy Rudy used to be a extremely hard thrower but of course you know like every other pitcher after a few years in the league and stop trying to throw the ball by hitters and you start learning how to pitch Rudy Mae is basically a breaking ball pitcher he moves the ball around he keeps the ball down and that's the only way you can win here Rudy made from Coffeyville Kansas the first batter for Kansas City Jim Wohlford now this is wolfertz 5th year and he's playing a little more this season than he has before he's hitting a 226 he platoons in left field with Tom Poquette and the first pitch of the game is outside for a ball the umpires tonight Joe Brinkman behind the plate Greg Kosc at first Nestor the veteran at second and Jim Evans at 3rd the one ball pitch the Wolfman popped him up rich and Bollinger take their turn vilandra takes it as one down so Wolford pops to the lander and that will bring up Amos Otis now watch Amos Otis he will completely obliterate the batter's box he will completely wipe out the chalk now watch this a habit of Otis he'll begin with the side there he goes wipes out the back he'll take care foot if I'm the groundskeeper I've got to say where did I go to all this trouble for in putting in a batter's box for Otis to wipe it out I've been pitching he might have made me a little bad there too I don't know why he goes through all that stuff but he does it there's nothing to do about it bonus having a good season 294 leads the league and doubled 74 runs batted in Amos Otis and he hits well against Baltimore he's 12 for 34 this year against the Orioles that's a 352 average and that'll be a base hit up the middle as amos otis continues to hit Baltimore pitching is now 13 for 35 and talk about a guy who hits well against Baltimore here he is George Brett Brett this year in the nine games between the Orioles and Royals brett has 17 hits in 35 times at bat that's a 485 average George Brett knows the difference between the American League and the National League and actually he'd be laying on his back a few times you think they throw at him more a little bit and that's the first strike of the ball game by Rudy they got Amos Otis on first over there and he likes to run and what time they had said that he was a better base Lou Brock I think I'd have to see that first to believe it I think a lot of people would dispute that Otis has 24 out of 29 stolen bases could be a double play pitch for Landreth no throw so Brett on on the fielder's choice 4 to 6 if you're scoring Otis forced at second two down Brett on first and that will bring up the major league leading hitter number 11 Harold Abraham's footprint Hal McRae hitting at 355 not Bob Gibson here's another fellow you faced in the National League yeah he was always a good hitter of course Cincinnati gave him up but they always have the knack of coming up with another good ballplayer so they really don't miss the neat though he leads the league you know as amazing as it sounds as Brett takes a short lead off first you would have to actually wonder where would Hal McRae play on today's Cincinnati ballclub well I guarantee you when you have a guy that can hit like that they'll find somewhere to put it but who would you bench well some of the guys probably never would have came into their own like they go sprint as McRae fouls off the pitch bread is stolen 17 out of 26 this year now McRae cannot run well he pulled a muscle on the 15th of July against Boston running the bases and many he has limped down the first for a punt and he runs a little better now but he has a pulled muscle as most muscular players do that's the trouble when you're muscle-bound you're gonna pull those muscles sooner or later the 1 1 pitch to McRae [Music] about you giving as a pitcher you cold yeah I don't think it had [Music] Lee may holding bread its first the pitch to McCray to to to Hal McRae this is McRae's eighth year in the majors first four with Cincinnati came over to Kansas City in the deal for Wayne Simpson with Wayne Simpson for Roger Nelson and Ritchie shine blue member richie shine blue is a good triple a ball player but really never hit as well in the major league well we never had any problem with him when he came over from cincinnati because they didn't let him play to to to McRae left field singleton coming in and that's it for Kansas City so the Royals go down in the first fitting no runs one hit no Baltimore areas and one runners stranded with four more coming to bat on the home first Kansas City nothing you like garage sales because you can find such great buys then you'll really like the biggest garage sale at the mall your chevy dealers annual garage sale so if you've been waiting for the best time to buy a to your Chevy dealers garage sale now let's get ready to floor [Music] now comes Miller time it takes as much skill to bring down a building as it does to put one up a now's the time for the best tasting beer you can find Miller and now the Baltimore batting order as they introduced themselves and first manager Earl Weaver born in st. Louis and now reside in Baltimore Maryland Tommy Harper designated hitter Boston Massachusetts Rob grid second day Long Beach California Reginald Jackson's Wrightsville Oakland California li-mei first baseman Birmingham Alabama Ken singleton left-field ilgaz our Quebec Doug the center third base Valencia California mark Belanger shortstop Pittsfield Massachusetts all right the first Baltimore batter the designated hitter Tommy Harper who's been around 35 years old this is Harper's 15th year in the major leagues he's only played 38 games and hitting a 203 I guess you faced Tommy Harper - yep evened out one of the guys that played at Cincinnati they seem to come up with some pretty good ballplayers we gots a tribute to the scouting system and the farm system that's the church you know if they didn't come up with a good ballplayer they go out by one so they they have a pretty good system working over there Andy Hassler he'll be 25 years old in October and what a turnaround he is made case you have not followed the career of Hassler he came up with the Angels in 71 and through 73 he was Owen seven he finally found himself in 74 and finished seven and 11 to 2 - Harper he finished with a two-point 61 and run average and was looked upon as the angels certainly top three starters in 75 he won his first three out of four and then the roof fell in - - to Harper inside almost didn't Hasler proceeded to lose 11 straight he finished 3 and 12 Bobby Grich on deck [Music] the start of the season Hassler lost his first six he lost 17 in a row over two seasons the angels traded him three to two Harper swing and a Miss strike three here's a perfect example right there of the difference in the American League in the National League you know they talk about players that thinner golfers the clears aren't any better he threw a 3-2 curveball internationally he's almost be assured of a 3-2 fastball Bobby Grich hitting a 274 this season mrs. Grich fifth year as a regular remember he moved Davey Johnson out of second base continuing the story with Hassler after he was traded to Kansas City he lost his first game to make it 18 straight games lost one shy the record he's now won four in a row right-center Cowan's has it ranged two down now Callens the right fielder for Kansas City now listen to the greeting for Reggie Jackson well neither those plans that booed him the other day is not here tonight kind of a mixed review Reggie Jackson now in his tenth year Reggie loves it he says if they boo me at least they're paying attention to me two outs in the Oriole first no score that'll be a base hit to left field dropping in front of woeful [Music] Jackson singles to left feel and that will bring up the Orioles number one home run an RBI man leave a [Music] li-mei not much for the average this year at 239 but again 23 homers and 84 runs batted in he's one behind bando in home runs and one behind Chambliss in runs batted in for the American League League yeah you talk about by the hitters effectiveness when a guy only hits 234 Oh what have you and he drives in 18 runs and he must be some kind of hitter Jackson has stolen 20 19 out of 25 and there he goes he is in the hole [Music] Reggie Jackson there he goes he got oh he got a real good jump on a pitcher of course you think Reggie didn't know this is master television that's way to go that's 20 out of 27 for Reggie Jackson and of course now in scoring position with two outs and the one ball pitched the LeMay no score Lee Orioles batting in the bottom of the first Kansas City in Baltimore Kansas City with an eight game lead over Oakland Oakland plays later tonight against New York [Music] Hasler looking into the side from martinez the one ball pitch let me ask you something Gibby when you face leave made that the waving of the bat distract you at all was it hard to keep your concentration no that doesn't body at all because you should be watching the catcher some pictures do use the hitter as as the strike zone also but he wants to catch you pay very little attention to that bat he looks like an overhand Vic power when he does a big power used to do an underhand see that wave that back one one too late a while ago you were talking about li-mei driving an 80 some fun well Richie Justin still in the second base like that is the very reason why he does have all these runs these guys get out there get on second base and then that's when he gets his hits [Music] one ball two strike pitch to LeMay Jackson on second with two outs Hassler's pitch to Mae high for a ball [Music] hey you can watch leave a wave the bat looks like he's starring butter to to to LeMay Pete got him so Hassler strikes out Harper and made to retire the side so the Orioles do not score one base hit the single by Jackson they leave one man on in scoring position after one full Baltimore nothing Kansas City nothing bill I'll be late start dinner about 6:30 take the chicken out of the freezer put it in our new Amana touch Matic radar range oven set 16 minutes touch defrost okay set 25 minutes cooking time and start it's simple it's a low no Matic the clock tonight for more action here on ABC's Monday Night Baseball next week you'll be seen the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the San Diego Padres in San Diego and if the pitching rotation follows then Randy you won his 20th game earlier last week we'll pitch for the Padres plus the always exciting rivalry between the Red Sox and the Yankees so that's ABC's Monday Night Baseball one week from tonight beginning at 8:30 Eastern Time over most of these ABC stations consult the local listing in the game in your area this is John Mayberry right-field easy play for Jackson and this one down well we really didn't have time to say it Bob but there's another guy who faced in the National League John Mayberry right Mayberry was was extremely young when I faced him he I think it was his first year of course he got traded out of the league Harry Walker who was the manager down there wanted to make a bunch of duty' out of him and he wanted to hit home run so they traded Walker wanted to make Mayberry a singles hitter at 255 pounds paint header well a walker usually I think it's correct on his hitting theories I remember he helped Matty Alou when a batting championship one here don't get it up but that's amazing this is out count the young right fielder this is Calvin's third year and really this is his full first full shot this season al Cowen and that's a four phone he'll get it easy two base hit out of that challenge will get a stand-up double as these ones in the second base the two base hit for al challenge you know you look at this Kansas City ballclub and you don't see anybody any one man doing an extremely outstanding job everybody does a pretty good job they play a pretty good defensive ball I have fair pitching and that's the way you want a penny you hardly ever will see this ballclub with some superstar least they haven't had one so far of course I guess Mayberry would come as close to anybody you know he's having kind of an off year but he probably would come as close as anybody's being a superstar [Music] this is Frank white the second baseman of course a graduate of the now-defunct Kansas City Royals Academy this program is being brought to you as an exclusive presentation of ABC sports let's pause five seconds now to allow our local stations to identify themselves [Music] the one ball pitch to Frank white with talons at second base and one out white hitting a 227 one of the best punters on the Kansas City ballclub and I'll tell you something the way doctor sensei is playing at third I wouldn't be surprised even with a one strike count one out to see white lay it down look what the sensei is playing deep and back to the bag well if he lays one down right now you got to kick him in his pants you got that men out in scoring position he's got to be whacking at that thing [Music] I've seen it done though here's the sense a deep and back of the bag talents leading off second with one out two balls in the strike to Frank white and he goes to right field foul [Music] why hit 250 last season and he is the first to admit that without the Kansas City royal academy he would not be in the major leagues today the scouts said no kid you'll never make it I've know a lot of those Scouts to be wrong too to to to Frank white and that will right-field Jackson face head challenge will score and white will go into second with a stand-up double those doubles back to back by cowards and white put Kansas City ahead one to nothing talking about Scouts several years ago when I was being scouted I I was trying to find for a big bonus one spouse told me that there's no way I could get a bonus because he didn't drink that I could make triple a ball was that after you at the plate for the Harlem Globetrotters or before no that's what I was I was still in college I played with the both trotters the first year that I find actually I played baseball first and then I played basketball that winter kind of supplying me with a winter job this is Freddie Patek the smallest man in baseball only by stature 5'4 140 pounds night here and the major Leafs came over from the Pirates and I guess here's another how you faced it right at a pot back one day how's it feel to be the smallest man in the major league he says Bad's being the smallest man in the minor league or the biggest company in the minor leagues outside the park bob was difficult after facing a tall man to have pot tech come on did you have to rearrange your strike zone oh yeah it's easier to pitch to a taller guy than as to him but at that particular time he didn't have a good strike zone you throw that ball up there a need to hack at it so there wasn't that tough to pitch to him he's a much improved player now white at second one out Kansas City leads one nothing to fall pitch pot tech right-center flare long cool cool cool cities people have believed for years as the best defensive centerfielder in the American League Bar None you know when you have a ballplayer like that they can play like Blair I think you would have to make concessions sometime for his hitting if he wasn't hitting up the park I still think that he could do you is much good out there now if there was anybody else therefore he has to play he can make up for not hitting by playing that great defense Blair having his worst year in the major leagues hitting at 199 this is buck Martinez the catcher made that morning me hit a little bit more oh you even hit better than that you at 303 one year when you were pitching for the card I love the point the back I wouldn't like that designated interface Martina is hitting 250 [Music] Frank white at second base with two outs Kansas City leads one nothing on back-to-back doubles by catlins and white now the pictures like Martina they say they like it behind there it gives them confidence the one strike pitch to Martinez right-field Jackson has it enraged and that's it for Kansas City but they do score one run on back-to-back doubles by Cowan's and white so with the Orioles coming to bat a home second it's Kansas City one Baltimore nothing we're just beginning to ensure homes we learned some important lessons from the things we saw we saw brush fires that plagued the West we saw tornadoes that visit the plane States each year the Hurricanes of the Gulf Coast then we also saw that no regular claims operation could handle a major disaster so Allstate set up specially trained to sanster teams trained to be on the scene within hours with the authority to start settling claims even for total losses in 1974 alone these all state teams handled 55 major disasters and settled more than 95,000 claims for people who didn't expect it to happen to them at all state will continue to prepare for the things nobody expects to happen and that's a promise from the 30,000 good hands people of Allstate a promise from Joe Joyce Julie George Susan Rey Jackie partner came to city defense tonight young Jim Wohlford in left-field the centerfielder the one-handed old reliable Amos Otis in right field al Cowan's who doubled in the previous inning the infield for Kansas City tonight George Brett hitting at 333 Freddy Patek at shortstop the former Pittsburgh Pirates Frank white doubled last inning second base and at first Big John Mayberry buck Martinez behind the plate and of course number 16 and the Orioles in the bottom of the second will have singleton de sensee and Belanger single comes another ball player that faced over and match the league we played with Montreal that's right in and with the myth right single and switch hitter now here there is a difference in singleton batting right-handed and left-handed right-handed singleton is hitting 204 left-handed to 88 84 points different hitting left-handed Kenny singled in right-center lotta balls to right field tonight Cowan's backpedal does an imitation of amos otis that is one down [Music] who was the first guy out field are you ever saw - did they do that with a Cardinals there's some ball club say hey you got a catch with two hands I've seen so many ballplayers with the Cardinals I can't remember we ran through some fairs now of course it's a common sight you may notice that most of these hitters are hitting that ball out there the right field and the reason for that is because Hassler is keeping the ball on outside part of the play they can't pull it dug the sensei cut off by Brett throw to first two down for the orioles five to three is scoring third to first yeah I like Owens like fill stories about Harry Walker Walker he hits that outside corner fewer a picture and they teach that hitter how to go out there and hit that ball something wrong there mark Belanger in his tenth year I believe I said his 13th season 10th year for Belanger Belanger started off strong now hitting a 269 never a power hitter of course one homerun 34 runs batted in vilandra replaced louie Aparicio seems the Orioles have always had a strong shortstop Ron Hansen Billy Hunter when we see down a third base there Willie Miranda was a shortstop here Chico Cara skill you know you'll find out that any ball club that that one dependent year after year usually had a pretty good shortstop second baseman in center fielders they got to be from enough to middle pitch to Bollinger Patek charges and that's it for Baltimore one two three fly out two groundouts and after two complete innings here at Memorial Stadium it's Kansas City one Baltimore nothing [Music] first hundred years all we brought out of his mind with Levi's blue jeans tough as nails then we struck a whole new vein now look new fabrics new colors and new styles they all come from the same places those blue jeans so they're bound to do right by folks dearly buys we put a little blue jean and everything we make chevrolet asked Chevette owners how they like their cars it has a wonderful turning radius we're a very tall family so we wanted a small car we tried many cars including rabbit and we couldn't fit in I'm six-two and my husband is six five well it's a lot quiet and I thought it might be I like it because I can put both my German Shepherds in it it's everything I thought it would be Chevette by Chevrolet it could make you a happy owner to watch henkle hang up his coat pet the dog it kissed me on the cheek and then say I'm hungry thank heavens for hungry man dinners from Swanson like they're hungry man chopped beef steak dinner Hey - broiled chumpies Thanks that's right Swanson already put the second helping in try Swanson hungry man dinners broiled chopping right you know there you see Daryl Herzog Whitey Herzog the players affectionately call him Stein and there's a reason for it of course we have a good bunch of guys and we're very proud of keep them pretty loose you know and we're not got the kind of people on our ballclub to have to be chewed out every day I once then well we have to do it but not very often they go out every day and they battle in these scratch and I've been very pleased since I've been here how they've responded to me and as long as we can joke around this man you don't mind them calling your Frankenstein I don't know I don't know and didn't know it stood for Frankenstein I just thought of it because I was German you know but no really Warner it's it's been a pretty good deal here and um I just feel happy to have huh why do you Herzog explaining the little nickname they have fun what about some nicknames in your playing days Jimmy for managers and players that he oh he's gone playing sometimes you can't I don't think we can mention most of it out here but uh I'd have to think about that a while we called red Saint needs calling Huck Huck yeah uncle Barry's been right Jim Wohlford batting in the Kansas City third they lead one-nothing right-field again at a play [Music] Sparky Anderson they call him Captain Hook oh yeah takes out those pictures they used to talk we like to call him the little general general yeah and Bollinger and he was ready to backhand it and it went over his glove I would have sold well scored a hit especially since the gate isn't Baltimore base hit for Jim Wolfensohn looks like it did think a little bad hop there [Music] the Wolford leads it off with a base hit and here is Otis who singled in the first inning Otis now 13 for 35 against Baltimore this season Kansas City has won six of the first nine games played between these ball clubs with three to go so they cannot lose the season series in case you're looking ahead to Kansas City Yankee series Kansas City won that series seven games to five Amos Otis coming into this game hitting 294 whoa fur to stolen 18 bases this season thrown out ten times Otis came over with the New York Mets in 1917 a trade for Joe Coyte seventh year is a regular now 281 lifetime Amos Otis one strike pitch to Otis Brett is on deck you know I'm just thinking about what you said about Otis and you see a guy like that a great ballplayer and the Mets are still looking for four pretty good ballplayers and you wonder and look out centerfield that's right you wonder what goes on in their mind when they when they get rid of it of course you know it when they're young you don't know how they're gonna develop but they're impatient of course when Otis was with the myths they tried him out at third base 1 1 - Otis foul ball reds and carts one one in the first inning gullet against Denny and of course it was Denny who beat the Reds last Monday night Phillies and Astro scoreless in the first Christensen against Larson Phillies lead by 12 the Reds lead by 9 1 to 2 Otis so Rudy Rudy vape fans Otis and that will bring up George Brett you know Bob is looking at this lineup boat is hitting at 294 Brett hitting a 333 McRae hitting a 355 followed by John Maybury with the RBIs really that is one of the best two three four five batters in baseball today you just have to have that if you're going to want to pin you'll notice that most ball clubs either if they're win the pennant are in their second place they'll have the meat of their lineup hitting 304 cigars drive men rubs you just have to have that of course you got to have a couple of pitches that when 1520 ballgames you look at st. Louis Cardinals in and you look down their lineup and you see one or two guys hit me pretty well you don't see any pictures that have over twelve or fourteen wins and little story left-handed hitting George Brett from Glendale West Virginia [Music] boy Brett had an incredible streak this year when he had six straight games three hits or more in six consecutive games pal McRae the on-deck hitter [Music] one one the George Brett Wolford at first one out the Kansas City third the Royals lead one-nothing and Bret steps out now there's a little thing there that I just really didn't care for when I was playing I'd be out there ready to throw and by the time I got ready to deliver the ball the batter would step out and the umpire would say time out I think this should be a timing point where the umpire will not call time out so you're saying in other words once you're in your motion then that's it the batter should not have a right to call chime on right he went into his stretch and he had started his delivery toward home plate one one to Bret Bob Reggie Jackson has been thrown at a lot this year he's been hit in the face doc Ellis hit him in the face it seems to me that it's almost unfair in the American League to throw at a batter because the pitchers don't come up anymore you can't retaliate by throwing at the pitcher well you can't change I think the guys have to be brushed back actually throwing out a guy I think that's wrong to try to hit a guy but to brush them back you have to do it regardless whether you're playing in a league where you hit or you don't hit you got to go out there and do a job and I think the only way you can do a good job pitching is to loosen these guys up move the ball around on them you never tried to hit anybody no I've hit guys a lot of guys what all accidents well you can't say that they were really accidents because you were you're trying to come inside close enough to the guy where you're going to brush him back if he gets hit and you don't think about it you know okay he got hit but to intentionally throw a ball at a guy and try to hurt him I think very few guys try to do that it may be done but I don't know if any of this got it when you hit a guy you don't think the consequences is it going to hurt him real bad or is it going to hurt him a little bit he just threw it to - to George Brett Wolford at first one out in the Kansas City third and there goes Horford the third a second and relford his height [Applause] and quick put it on [Applause] [Music] so that's it for Kansas City they do not score in the third inning no runs one hit no errors none left bottom of the third came the city one ball aboard nothing Sears national automotive values Sears rolls back regular prices on Sears best-selling steel-belted radial with the heritage of the world tough roads up to 67 dollars lower on sets of four and if you need you shocks ride on into Sears Sears heavy duty shocks are on sale now just $4.99 each you save over 30% only it Sears the shower massage by Waterpik is America's favorite here's why Oh sizing my back would be great just be better than the cocktail to be better than get America's favorite the shower massage by Water Pik test me Fred Lynn making the catch of my life and that's my buddy Jim right smacking ones understand [Applause] baseball's not the only place where young people can show their stuff today's Navy offers young man and women first-rate training and challenging jobs plus travel and some real adventure so get on the ball and join the Navy team for more information call your Navy recruiter toll-free at 888 thousand appreciating a message on behalf of Major League Baseball as you see Bobby Grich in the Orioles dugout hey we invite you to join us this Saturday night for another NFL game as the Houston Oilers traveled to Texas Stadium and Irvington and take on the powerful Dallas Cowboys Dan Pastorini from the Oilers up against Roger Staubach and it's bill as the battle of Texans NFL football Saturday night beginning at nine o'clock Eastern Time over most of these ABC stations so the Orioles come to bat in the home third this is Paul Blair brett struck out to end that inning and Duncan through to Grich and put the tag on Wolford to complete the DoublePlay Blair as we pointed out earlier having his worst season in baseball hitting at 199 George Brett just in case Paul Blair decides to lay one down although with a two strike count I think he might surprise a lot of people playing a little close for a two strike count is I'll tell you why they do that Blair is not what you would consider a pull hitter and anytime you find a guy like barely hits the ball up the middle another way third baseman will usually come in a step or two that's called the cheating in on with a little bit 1 to 2 Paul Blair this is Blair's 12th year still only 32 years old you remember I remember one year Blair opened the season it was 1971 he opened as a switch-hitter he started the season switch-hitting but gave it up and they talked about now he's probably wishing a distiller [Music] Londyn up in Kansas City Baltimore on the home third the pitch to Blair he got him that's three for Andy Hassler three strikeouts and that will bring up Dave Duncan Hassler is mixing his pitches extremely well he's got that good changeup going for him and you notice that he's thrown the change-up when he's ahead of the hitter hardly ever stone it when he's behind me Duncan who came over from Cleveland in the blue Powell deal hitting at 2:09 played five years with Oakland [Music] Kansas City scored the run in the second inning on back-to-back doubles by Cowan's and white and that's been in London up in Kansas City we're in the third Oakland place later on on the coast tonight against the Yankees going into tonight's game Kansas City leads Oakland by 8 with 33 to play including six against each other the last nine days in September Boston leads Texas six to one now in the fifth inning Tiant going for a sixteenth Morna you know when you're when you're chasing the ball club you want to play them you don't want to play anybody else because you can't depend on somebody else beat them so you want to play them head-to-head right well you didn't play all you see the on deck batter Tommy Harper how many times did you make the Phillies after you were down by 11 I think we had five games are games the village yeah 2 and 1/2 Duncan pop them up Wolford in pot check out pot tech calls and those two down remember him back in 1964 when we were playing in Philly they came into st. Louis and we beat him a three-game series and then they left and they went to Cincinnati Cincinnati beat them too and that's how we want this is the well-traveled Tommy Harper Harper struck out the first inning Harper came up with the Reds was traded to Cleveland traded to the pilots actually drafted by the old Seattle pilots moved to Milwaukee was traded to the Red Sox was traded to the Angels and picked up by the Orioles 35 year-old Tommy Harper my Giessen with all that traveling he must be about 70 the pitch to Harper Brett one hop throw to first and that's it another easy inning for Andy Hassler so after three complete it's Kansas City one Baltimore nothing the Alaskan pipeline 800 of the toughest miles manners of a Concord and up here quitting time is Miller time time to head for the best tasting beer you can find America's quality beer you we've got beer [Music] it's not just athletes that get athlete's foot innocent men women and children can get it too just by coming in contact with it and man does it itch well the first itch you feel you spray on MP 27 empty 27 will kill that athlete's foot fungus and help keep it from coming back believe me I've seen a whole lot of scratching going on empty 27 here's the end of the itch I know you're not getting a terrific shave from your electric razor maybe there's nothing wrong with your razor maybe there's something wrong with your face your beard is just laying there make it stand up with this Williams electric shade look every leading razor manufacturer tells you use a pre-shave most people use electric shave it gets your beard to stand up so your razor shades closer and with less irritation Williams electric shape makes your beard stand up makes your razor shave better no a lot of designated hitters do different ways to prepare themselves while they don't play this ball about Nolan pitcher I don't sit on the dog I benched that much if I don't know the pitcher I try to sit there for a couple of innings I try to run a lot if I get a sweat going I try to hold that sweat I try to stay loose where do you run at Canton City we have a ton I can use in the new ballpark we have tones and all the ballparks I use the bullpens a lot when in and change I run back and forth I think the most important thing is to be as loose being a designated here as you would be if you were playing in the outfield and I think that's where a lot of guys have the problem because they maybe read the magazines or sit on the bench you can't sit and be cold you got to be as active active as you were if you were in the ball game and I think that's the reason why I've been having a lot of success doing because I'm never stilt when I go to basketball to the plate Pal McRae explaining his theory on being a designated hitter I agree with him is almost the same theories pitching that's why I pitchers throw a warmup pitches Oh off the knee of me good recovery third of first and they get the prey see otherwise that's a big job there's tremendous reflux play on our maze part I'll come back to this box and usually you're off balance he jumped right on he threw it off balance but the thrill was in the dirt and leave me made a fine player at first once again Hal McRae pull a muscle way back on July the 15th he has not been able to run full speed since fact he stole his 20th base in that game and hasn't stolen one cent and has not played a game to the field since this is Mayberry who flied out to right in the second inning Vic John coming into this ball game with 13 home runs and 82 runs batted in the one strike pitch to Mayberry go Bob I have always felt that the most underrated category in baseball is runs batted in I personally think it's more important than batting average and a home runs yeah I agree with you 100% those are the guys that went in the ball game you know there's a guy named Bill Cunningham several years ago when I first started he won the batting title he hit something like 337 and he drove in 38 runs no then what's the use don't tell Joe that Paul's dick Cowan's as Mayberry out of play ball two strikes on John Mayberry [Music] bayberry is last four years is average 27 home runs and 94 RBIs per year [Music] today is something unusual Mayberry is the only American League player to drive in a hundred of all runs in three of the last four years he's the only player one two two Mayberry and Blair will not get this one a base hit for Mayberry so may Mary gets the fifth hit off Rudy May and that will bring up all Cowen to double in the second inning and later scored on the double by Frank white Rudy Mae came up in the Philadelphia organization and was traded to the Angels way back in 1964 for both Olinsky both Olinsky he played it with the Cardinals - I think everybody played with the car though the pitch the cowards if you're thinking of Mayberry stealing forget it I think you do there's aa bit about you see the third-base coach Chuck Hiller yeah he's not giving anything but about you see the third-base coach Chuck Hiller yeah he's not giving anything over there you watch him try to fool somebody the only thing you could possibly get here is the hit and run because Mayberry can't run hey Barry is stolen only three bases all season [Music] were you ever used as a pinch runner bun sure was I pitched my pinch around a lot of times till I got hurt one time then they decided not to do it anymore and they making Haslam faking Cowan's look bad saying that Cowan's went around that time you know Jim Cott was hurt this year watch that pitch again see if Cowan's goes around oh yeah sure not even close now he's swung at that weekend the first time one to two Cowens and he goes for an outside pitch pops it up and Britch will have it for the second out Jim kaat was used as a pinch runner this year and hurt himself and missed two turns I can recall I can't recall what year it was but I split in a second second base and I hit the shortstop I ripped his kneel when he had something like 14 or 15 stitches and I had a sprung ankle for about a model hmm who was if you remember was against the Chicago I can't recall the shortstop who so long ago try not to remember back that wasn't Kessinger no no this was before Cathy for custody this is Frank white white double in the only run of the ballgame in the second inning so Mayberry at first with two outs Kansas City leading one to nothing we're in the fourth inning at Baltimore's in an Oakland game if Lee Alexander against Norris New York at Oakland starting on the West Coast later Boston leading Texas 6-1 in the fifth inning Blyleven has been knocked out for the Rangers Tiant in there for Boston and Minnesota leads Milwaukee to 1 in the first Augustine against Redford Redford has been knocked out a rather bright burgmaier in there for Minnesota a ball and two strikes the Frank white from Greenville Mississippi 25 years old yesterday Frank Wright at a single a double in a home run [Music] and add his double tonight so white in his last five times at bat as a single two doubles in a home run or four five for Frank white I was watching and I've been watching away they're pitching him he chokes up a lot he stands right on top of the plate therefore I would be reluctant to turn a lot of breaking stuff but they seem to be going with the breaking stuff to him 1 2 to Frank white all those tips a man what a move to get out of where that way I think Rudy may hurt me out there go right up on their feet oh just about hit his back foot not right now the thing to do would be to come back with a fastball inside but I guarantee you know they're breaking ball he's gonna be looking for it 2 2 to Frank white you call it Bob Blair and that's it for Kansas City so the Royals do not score in the floor no runs one hit no errors one left we go to the bottom of the fourth one to nothing Kansas City every part of Texaco is connected to every other part to get you the quality gasoline and oil you need wherever you are we're working to keep your trust and again I like my chicken finger lickin good whatever liner night-night again and nine Alexis chicken tingly good of course I like my chicken finger-licking good turn the other kind of chicken I like my chicken finger looking good this Saturday on ABC's Wide World of Sports will be the 300 mile late-model stock car race from the famed Daytona International Speedway and they told each floor bolts world of sport will be in Philadelphia for the national AAU weightlifting championships featuring competition in the heavyweight and super heavyweight classes plus royal life from the st. Anne's Golf Club in England they'll be saying this year's Curtis Cup Golf Championship that's ABC's driverless Forks this Saturday five o'clock Eastern the Pacific four o'clock Central Time over most of these ABC stations this is Grich leading off for Baltimore the Orioles trail one nothing bottom of the fourth they have only one hit on Andy Hassler single by Reggie Jackson in the first inning and Jackson stole second was straight in the second as LeMay struck out that's been it for Baltimore [Music] warned or something you don't see much and he used to see it a few years ago when a ball club faced the pitcher like Hassler and they couldn't hit him they would spawn a little more they try to do anything to get on base but now it seems what everybody's blazed back wait for that it never happens good point bless you Jackson on deck one water grit and I don't think Rick leads it off with a that will bring over Keith Jackson [Music] [Applause] sparse wood enthusiastic crowd here in Baltimore tonight brettly's happy about that because the fewer people left before the point richard first leading off with a base hit the bottom of the fourth Reggie Jackson has had a rough year physically hit in the face by a pitch from Doc Ellis has hit the deck numerous times this season the pitch to Reggie correction on the Western Union wire if you're keeping track of the other scores red fern is pitching for Minnesota so it's Augustine against red for two-to-one Minnesota in the first inning over Milwaukee the pitch to Jackson [Music] regi talking himself there's leave a on deck he even waives the ban on deck ketchup ocean [Music] one two throw to first lot of bugs here tonight now let me ask you something as a pitcher does that ever bother you look at all those bugs no I don't think it bothers the pitcher nearly as much as it bothers the hitter uh-huh sometime he might swing in one of those bugs fly out there thanks to the curveball I love it right behind of bug's ear Hassler with a one-two to Jackson and that's it quickly a little room yeah I think that would agree Reggie right there I think we could take a look at that ball curveball yeah he caught the ball you notice when they catch they're called at his hand went down pretty low but then dump ours always right you said please mr. fire I've begged it different with you so that's it for Reggie strikeout number four for Andy Hassler as Reggie puts his batting helmet into the slot and leave a swing and a Miss they struck out the first inning pass was struck out for walk none given up only two singles the Jackson and Grich one to nothing Kansas City Grich on first LeMay waving the bat got like LeMay you you call him one speed he has one speed of swing he throw a curve ball or changeup or a fastball doesn't matter he's still pointed to bat the same way does that make it easier for you as a pitcher yes it does you can trick him a little more for if he gets it bad on there often enough to drive ins and runs lemay the older brother of course a Carlos May [Music] [Applause] [Music] where the case of the pisser smarting himself you know he getting away with that ball away from me fast Falls away breaking balls away and all of a sudden he decides he wants to come inside with a fastball and is always ready for a fastball inside always so Andy Hassler and rough Denis one is the second and third one out justice singles in Hey look that right here there it is right inside cortney's he whittled that back one less time that time right down the line towards the rest of history double Wolford playing it off the wall Richard's third may at second singled and flied out in the second inning singled in from New York City hit an even 300 last year he's one of the few hitters that hits the same way regardless of where they hit and left hand or right hand and you picked him inside both ways [Applause] Boyle's trail 1 nothing second and third one out singleton ground ball pop tech charge is only one play that's at first pitch scores in the game his time gives singleton an RBI [Applause] so singleton was hitting only 185 the first of June nothing is average to 265 and his nap 49 runs batted in this is the sensei the sensei coming into this ball game hitting a 241 grounded out the second inning 1 to 1 May against Hassler K the city and Baltimore LeMay held 2nd base two out of a a second as may your base runner at second not a fast man would take a good base hit in the outfield to score may from second even with two outs pop them over play very close for Big John has it and that's it for golem or when the Orioles break through with a single and a ground down after four complete Baltimore 1k at the city one 96 percent of all Chevy trucks registered in the past 10 years are still on the job and before we introduced our Chevy Chevette we took it through many of the same durability tests our tough Chevy pickup trucks go through we tested its brakes the same way its corrosion resistance it's suspension now we're not trying to say a shavette can do everything a Chevy truck can do but obviously the Chevette has been raised in some pretty tough company when you want to stay first to design cars to last [Music] sometimes BankAmericard can make all the difference State Farm agent Paul ward I have dealt with my customers for many years on their hollow bill and their homeowners policies so when the time comes to discuss life insurance with them it's a time when they are able to open up to me because of the fact they already know me I'm not just someone knocking on their door called it I I'm a friend I'm someone they can trust and have confidence [Music] that's history well I would differ from it I wouldn't put Harrelson in there I'm sure a lot of people might blue campaneris barb belanger perhaps concepción yeah there's there's a lot of great shortstop you you're tough when you go narrow it down to three yeah one one to protect and he thought it was outside joe brinkman said it was the outside corner fret cards in the Reds one one in the fifth minute you recall last Monday night we showed you the Cardinals found out 14 hits and beat the Reds 9 to 5 1 to 2 Fred he got him that's number 3 for Rudolph may Junior [Music] here's a changeup pasta way out in front he's looking for that fast stuff hostess has a good fastball hitter than anything other than a fastball throws them off balance a little bit Martinez flied out to right field in the second inning one to one we're in the fifth day the city trying to hold on to the eighth game lead ball of or is there hope swindle trail by 11 and a half there you see George Bamberger pitching coach of the Orioles yeah there's a guy that perhaps you get more credit Bamberger he's been here a while of course you know when you talk about a pitching coach and you talking about giving a pitching coach credit for the pitchers you have to pretty much stick with the pitches that work came up through the organization backhanded by the Rancho Santa three 563 of destroying now look at that plague falls in a hole he had to backhand it and you notice he came up with almost the same motion and threw the ball that just dropped all the way you can get him in that situation got him about two or three feet two down and here's Wolford who's won 4-2 popped out the first and singled in the third was out stealing it Jim Wolfman the left fielder speaking of Bamberger you know he's been here 8 years they've got 15 20 game winners since he's been here but of course as you point out you don't have the picture so what may have something to do with all that hitting they've had over the last few years - but this is a big ballpark bigger than most of the parks in the league and you have to have a cannon to drive that ball out here with the wind blowing over the fence though this is a pitcher's Park now you see the Kansas City in field defensively for Wolford the sensei justin back of the bag [Music] play it straight away - one - Walker [Music] Boston now leads Texas 11 to 1 in the 6th inning rice as it is 17th and 18th home runs of the year Tiant coasting on a 16th win and Wilfred left field single in can't get it good stop and the throw to second lipid press result I am 5 arranger I don't know Appalachia doesn't cut off it might be close at second yeah I think they're the lander here are either the second baseman did Chris didn't say anything because that ball looked like it was hit or right in there to get him somebody's got to tell him either caught it or let it go right or assume it's automatically cut so unless someone says let it go so Wolford doubles and that's the sixth hit off Rudi May nice backhand by a singleton in left field oh yeah he did everything he could if he tried to do it any other way the ball probably would have rolled through the wall six hits off may 3 have been doubles here's otis who singled in the first and struck out in the third he leads the league in doubles amos otis water you talking about all those buck down on the field I think half of up there that booth mouth there you see Chuck Hiller third-base coach a Chuck Hiller first nationally player ever to hit a grand slam in a World Series did it for the Giants no one that hit a grand slam until Hillard did it against the Yankees [Music] one strike pitch to Otis more Fernet second to house the score is 1:1 and a lot of folks now [Music] remember the peace situation in a Cincinnati earlier this year I was just thinking about the pitch after he might come up with a new pitch now called the first pitch is that terrible yeah well I'll pretend I didn't hear one the one top of the fifth inning two outs Wilfred at second two balls one strike pitch to Amos Otis up the middle that'll get scared with the score and Kansas City leads two to one so Amos Otis now 2 for 3 and a run batted in the 7th hit off Rudi Bay and Otis your heart is singling up the middle that's all come up the middle there's nothing you can do about it the pitcher has usually fallen off one way or other on the bomb and he's off balance and lets the ball is hit on the side where your glove head is almost impossible to catch that thing Otis now 14 437 in the nine games against Baltimore 14 hits and 37 advance you know you would think that they'd walk the guy or something get rid of me here's Brett who's old for two now Brett was up there with McRae as recently as three and a half weeks ago from the batting title they were each around the 350 mark McRae has stayed there McRae ending 355 but Brett has dropped to 334 even the one strike pitch to Brett at a play there you see Dave pagan the former Yankee warming up in the Oriole bullpen came over in the same trade with Rudy Mae you know it's really tough when you're pitching a ballgame like this we're efficient he's pitching a pretty good ballgame but they don't get them run so you give up a couple of runs and already somebody down there is cranking in the bullpen you don't feel real good as a starting pitcher when that situation happens two strike pitch to George Brett with Otis fakes to run the second yeah ask you something Bob as a picture I would think that must have been one of the toughest things to do not ignore the base runner at first knowing he might steal and concentrate on the batter but certainly had to be conscious of well see I've always said that when I when a pitcher worries more about the guy on first then he does the guy at home then he's in trouble and when I got a gown first I was aware that he might run but I had to concentrate on the hitter priority went to the hitter that's right of course you know in situations like this the the kitchen will call a different type of ballgame - because they got a guy on first second run a lot of times you'll start calling a lot of fast balls with aggravate you notice the stolen 24 out of 29 this year the pitch to Brett right-field Jackson coming in and that's it for kids a city but they break the tie with a double and a single and as Rudy Mae walks off the mound we go to the bottom of the fifth Kansas City to Baltimore perfume our fancy bottle not fatty prices man what's the smell like a man yeah he wants to be [Music] hey you look like you could use a Gatorade there are many ways to work up a thirst but one way to really quench it with Gatorade thirst quencher the one drink scientifically designed to give you a bunny when it's thirsty for here's Andy Hassler and of course as you know he lost 18 consecutive ballgames over a two-year period I asked him earlier if he ever thought of quitting during that period well there were some shaky moments there but I always thought that I would eventually break the streak I'm sorry that it went so long you know and it was I think most of it I just put a lot of undue pressure on myself and that probably hurt me more than anything and getting traded over there I started a 0-0 record as far as I was concerned and I think that really helped me Andy Hassler who seemingly has turned it around since the trade of the Angels to the Royals you know a lot of times when you lose those ball games it's not necessarily your fault either a lot of things are involved spoken like a true picture here's Bellinger who granted out the second inning Belanger Blair Duncan and possibly others for Baltimore the Orioles trail two to one don't you think over a career as you see Paul Blair on deck over a career Bob Gibson and you won 251 ballgames don't you think it evens out some games you weren't a sharp you want and some games you really had it but the team didn't score Bowie and you lost come a hex pitcher the answer though never even thought never he the sound two balls and a strike to mark Belanger Kansas City leads two to one with one of the second and one of the fifth Hassler against Rudy Mae vilandra flyball left-field Wolford has it range and there's one down you might have seen that catch the dirt and left field that's because the Colts played an exhibition football game here and there you see if they tore up the turf here's Blair who struck out in the third inning Bob what about the season they lowered the pitching now weren't you one of the leaders of speaking out against that as I'm sure all pitchers were but Blair PopTech two down yeah as a matter of fact I think that particular year when I had a yari a 1.12 dries don't have a ER a about 1.8 and had several other pitches way we could er age I think that was the reason why they did tear the mount out and the next year of course I didn't have that good of a year but it was very difficult to try to adjust to it and I still think it should be up wants to put your offensive - right raise it back up five more inches and go get them here's Duncan who popped out the third inning Dave Duncan did you have a particular catcher you wanted when you pitch box I pitched the Tim McCarver most of my career and it didn't really matter I just hated to change pitches in the middle of a ball game one ball pitch to Duncan primarily because of one well catch is called different types of games and you're going into a ballgame and because you're ahead 15 in the 15 and old he'll bring another catcher in and he'll start calling a different game you know I might your best pitch may have been a fastball or slider he starts calling out of breaking balls and breaks up your concentration he's got his own idea yes ah deck Tommy Harper number 12 - 2 1 Kansas City leading bottom of the fifth seven hits for Kansas City 3 for Baltimore nobody on 2 out 3 and OH - Duncan and there has not been one walk in this ball game excellent control so far by both May and hastily three and one two Duncan that was a foul tip also asses is dazzling condemn with breaking stuff than anyone and gets him looking for that curveball he spills that high heart button and it probably looks like a DD coming up there three two from Hassler who has not walked a batter where I saw that RIT's Phillies game yesterday the rats tied it in the ninth on a strikeout the pass ball Rose scored from third that ever happened to you in the ball game lost the ball game on a fastball on a strikeout oh yeah I don't know if that lost the game but I've I've gone to three games where I struck four guys on the inning because the fastball on the last pitch sometimes we'll curveball to the heart in a dirty hard to catch 3-2 to Duncan and what long throw that's it so the Orioles go out 1 2 3 easy play easy inning or Haslip and at the end of five complete its Kansas City to Baltimore one we'll be back with more baseball after this word from our local station this is ABC [Music] join us one week from tonight for more action air on ABC's Monday Night Baseball next week you'll be seeing the Los Angeles Dodgers against the San Diego Padres in San Diego and if the rotation continues the same then Randy Jones will pitch for San Diego next Monday night and the Red Sox and the Yankees in New York that's ABC's Monday Night Baseball one week from tonight beginning at 8:30 Eastern Time over most of these ABC stations jolt your local listing for the game in your area Kansas City in the 6th inning we'll send up McCrae Mayberry and Cowens McCrae old for 2 flied out and grounded out you recall he hit a ball off the knee of Rudy Mae in the fourth inning Dora and you'll recall that the only reason it was out of course because McCrae cannot run full speed [Music] McCrea in the last two seasons is it 310 and 306 a bonafide 300 inter now al McCrory from Avon Park Florida [Music] before he was injured McCray stole home twice this season [Music] it's the right field out of play [Music] the pitch to McCrae up the footplate by Rudy made excellent reflux good balance by weaving and speaking of broody me I've heard about but here's the guy who broke his arm when he tripped over his dog Rudy babe well it was one night my wife and I were in a bit boom having something to eat and I was taking the bowls back to the kitchen and I had my dog I found the dog that was on the kitchen floor and I accidentally tripped over the dog and fell on my left elbow my right wrist hit the ground and I wanted to break him both on that broke is the farm and risk tripping over his dog in the middle of the home it ate that broke both our yeah this is Mayberry who's won 4-2 speaking of broken bones I've always wanted to ask you this Bob 1967 in a game against the Pirates I think it was the late Roberto Clemente hit a ball off your leg and broke your legs and you continued in the game and finish the inning lay berry right side Grich for 2/3 if it's going you know Warner was when he when the fall comes back through the box or wherever is it Dead's the area the dead is the area where the ball that makes contact and you don't know really that your leg is broken all you know this you have a little stinger and I didn't know that my leg was broken I pitched his three other batters and when I had a 3-2 pitch on the last hitter I tried to strike him out and I actually popped the bone in half so it was just cracked a little bit but you just don't know that there's collins who takes it for a ball Cowens one for two double in the second inning and scored on white's double the first Kansas City run so you finished the inning on a broken leg right there always doing things to make things better for the hitters that's why I said how to put that pound back up you came back and finished that season and then pitched in the World Series right I want to see you know if I could pitch and I pitched six innings the first time I came back it was the game you pitched in the series against Santiago and Santiago hit a home run off with you that ballpark II hit a pop up in the win over defense posture it's a good thing you're not partial for the pitch the cowards [Music] you had your share of home you have 24 home runs yeah but I hit mine in big part well they were all in and nationally for now both of his American League park matter of fact I hit one in Boston over center field wall are you talking about world series man oh yeah I thought you were talking about Santiago I like it off huh well they used you as a pinch hitter couple times three and two now of Callan's we're in the sixth inning Kansas City leads Baltimore two to one seven hits off Rudi May three hits off Andy Hassler [Music] three two two cowards and that's up the middle base hit so let's ain't hits our fruity may Rudi starting to get the ball up quite a bit now that's alright there was a hanging curveball it didn't appear to have a lot on it and when you start getting the ball up he throw the ball the game is still 2 to 1 you're in trouble when you started getting those pitches high in the strike zone I think you can see right here matter of fact it was so high at jam the hitter coming right at our centerfield camera that's what it looks like from the eyes of the centerfielder so Cowens is on first with two outs here's Frank white who double in the first Kansas City run he's 1 for 2 and there goes cowards cowards will go to third there it was perfection Verlander went toward shortstop to cover the base the base hit through the hole vacated by Belanger beautiful hit run you'll see that a lot of times usually when you're youngster they'll tell you when you hit front of your right and a hitter hit that ball to the right side on the infield but you'll see that the shortstop was covered second base so you try to hit that ball in the hole for the shortstop to the bench nine hits now off crew team a the Oriole bullpen up again Duncan talking with a mask you start there you see him dier miller number 37 football of our did you ever in all honestly get excellent advice from a catcher in a situation or was it more to calm you down or stop your rhythm or something when a catcher went out to talk to you yeah I don't think the advice that he gives you is anything other than to remind you of situation because you know most of these things yourself anyway Callens 1/3 white his first two out classic flyball left-field singleton will have it and that's it for Kansas City so the Royals threaten but do not score and lead to no runs two hits no errors two left two to one Kansas City in the six amigos this is dugout there's Terry Crowley with his jacket on Bamberger the pitching coach the Baltimore join us this Saturday night for another NFL game as the Houston Oilers travel to Texas Stadium and take on the Dallas Cowboys Dan Pastorini of the Oilers up against Rogers Stahl back of the Cowboys and of course the Battle of Texas that's NFL football this Saturday night beginning at 9 o'clock Eastern Time over most of these ABC stations [Music] Hasler here in the sixth inning will face Harper Grich and Jackson for Baltimore Harper is old for two and a credit to both pitchers there has not been one walk in this ball game in fact only two three two counts look at Harper stands almost looked like he's off balance [Music] Harper was 2 for 3 yesterday single and a double as the designated hitter [Music] - bold pitch to Tommy Harper you know I'm watching Harper stand there you know he's standing a little bit like Willie Mays used to spam this is a little bit yes sir bend the knee [Music] and Harper - to work there might be a different result well he's got half his number well Harper one of only five men in baseball history to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases the same year and Mays was one of those Grich on deck Harper Bobby box was one of them I don't remember all of the guys that know Bobby was Aaron did it thank her and a guy named Ken Williams the old st. Louis Browns some of those old-timers to to to Harper guess they'd be saying that about me after a while that's right you remember old Bob Gibson used to pitch in the 50s and 60s and 70s my god it was the fifties and sixties and seventies three decades for you I start when I was twelve marios batting in the bottom of the sixth they trailed two to one Kansas City with one of the second one of the fifth of Baltimore one of the fourth [Music] three two - Tommy Harper I always take the closest ball for Martinez gets put on the catchers always keep their back to the up and talked over the shoulder yeah they better do that because if they turn around they're out of there it's and the umpires resent it because it's like they're showing them up all right you can yell at the up higher you can say all kinds of things see Martinez there you think he's not talking to Jo wrinkles [Applause] so Harper the first walk of the ball game leading off the sixth inning and here's Grich who's won 4-2 [Music] Harper is stolen four bases in six attempts this season pretty good lead for Harper [Music] [Music] Hasler looking into the Sun there you see LeMay at first base he represents the tying run Billy Hunter the third-base coach [Music] Joe Morgan's got a shot at 30 swelly Arne has over 40 stolen bases and he's got 26 home runs he could do it pitch to Grich is high give her a face runner talk to you Bob after throwing over so many times they cut it out and you know no I never talked to them and they never talked to me Billy Hunter with the sons perhaps Harper with his lead off first one ball pitch to Grich centerfield [Music] [Applause] [Music] cornering up exactly what I was talking about you keep throwing that ball over the first you lose concentration on that guy at home plate and that's what happened [Applause] watching the gym all right down the middle the plate was the hit out there in right-center nobody can get to it between overseas Cowan's markers scores from first it's to to his British actor Richard second which is funny [Applause] [Music] 44 runs batted in [Applause] Jackson won 4-2 tonight looking for RBI number 80 you know this situation here are currently you you might even want to walk Reggie Jackson but if you do you got a coming up there you saw Charlie Harper the oriole dugout after scoring the tie look at the books and the books around Grich there's Jack look at get some spray out there a to Jackson this'll move bricks to third so grits boots the third little one hours Jackson is out four to three got a man on second base you don't have any out we hit that far to the right side infield [Music] he has 83 runs batted in one behind the leader chris chambliss a flyball now would put me into a tie for the RBI lead may is one for to brick to third one out to two ballgames more hits all past nine all fruit eBay li-mei there you see bridge he represents the lead one they wave in the back I don't think about 350 feet away Xavier and the oil thing sacrifice fly ball LeMay at this 84th runs batted in he now ties chrysanthus for the lead Grich scores 3-2 to go along hey secret hey you see Jim plumber here singleton singleton over - when has a run batted in as he grounded out rich scored from third in the fourth inning [Music] one one that any single [Music] there you see LeMay Bobby Grich Tommy Harper on top Paul Blair on the bottom number six you see a ballclub that's 11 and a half 12 games whatever and they love the beat on that first place Club and either Divisie they just love to be at all get it just so hard as if they were trying to one defend it the Sun say in the on-deck circle outside the single so once again the war comes back to haunt you the only walk of the ball game scores the tying run [Music] - one the sickle [Music] singleton former New York Mets former Montreal Expos single right field cowards and that's it for Baltimore the Orioles come through with two runs on one base hit after six complete Baltimore 3 can't decide hey you can work all day on this heap it still won't be worth being you look terrific in no time I got kid saw ya kid spree soft slides on easy kit liquefies as it hits the finish deep cleans wipes off easy there's no easier faster way to get a long lasting paste wax shine unless somebody else does it for you hey how much did you say you want for this Jay wax kit no wonder it's number one you fly a lot closer to the crops into the clouds open those last acres of dusted you know it's Miller time time to head for the best tasting beer you can find time to america's quality beer Miller High Life [Music] which Chevy does that old open road Boogaloo Chevy Monza 2 plus 2 which Chevy shows that sleek advanced aerodynamic Chevy Monza Jew bus to which Chevy's named after the Italian Grand Prix and causes this kind of hullabaloo to versatility Chevy Mars to do Chevy Monza 2+2 dooby dooby doo da approaching the 7th inning now will face Martinez Wolford and Otis Bob the year you had a nun run average of one point 12 did you go into each ball game thinking you were gonna pitch a shutout I think you have to go in any ball game like that in order to be a good pitcher you go out there with the idea you're gonna pitch a shutout and then when you give up runs one run that's it they're not gonna get any more runs than that you have to have that idea Martina's old for two tonight flied out and grounded out John buck Martinez now Martinez and fitzmorris are the only original Kansas City Royals who have been with a ballclub since they came into existence eight years ago [Music] Martinez came over from the Houston organization so only two left from the original Royals [Music] Rudy may still in there giving up nine hits and now leads three-two to right field Reggie Jackson coming on and there's one down [Music] that'll bring up wolf there's two for three Wolford a single and a double [Music] read it to Baltimore the Orioles win and the yank should lose the Orioles would trail by 10 and a half and perhaps more significantly as Wilfred fakes a bunt it would also give an opportunity Oakland would cut it to seven the pitch to Walter and of course consider that this game will long be over when the Oakland Yankee games start so you can bet that Oakland will be watching the scoreboard as they take the field the result of this game Wohlford almost out of the obliterated batter's box if you will sometimes that's the best of reason that that those guys will erase that mine like Otis does all the time they'll go sneak back a little bit the pitch to Wolfram of course the idea there is a further backyard a longer you get attempt to see that ball alright and get it after it breaks too right Memorial Stadium now you see Rudy Mae Orioles came here in 1954 from st. Louis they're forced for the st. Louis Browns twenty-third year here in Baltimore for the Orioles 3 and 2 to Jim Wohlford left-center we're owners horse near the fence 385 feet away Paul Blair against the fence you know why I think Blair is that's a good outfielder he plays in relatively close and he could have to turn his back as you see there and he has to go back over his shoulder for a lot of balls most most outfielders will play teeth and a lot of time those little basements right over the end till the land and he'll catch both see that padding out there in the outfield I recently put that in Harvey Keane was playing the outfield for either Cleveland on Detroit that padding right there there was no padding he jumped on the fence and actually caught his eye on the fence and almost lost as I sight the next day they put in the padding that was about 10 years ago it's been in there ever since [Music] two down and here's Otis Otis two for three tonight single in the first struck out the third and singled in the fifth and put Kansas City ahead two to one and he's not trying to swing all right now he's going for the pump we want to get one out here tie this thing up I would think that would be to the pitchers advantage knowing that well it doesn't mean that you can always get him out though but if you know a man is swinging for the home run don't you have a better chance of getting him out well I don't know if you have a better chance of getting him out but you have a better chance of pooling that's not the story tomorrow right [Music] Herr Otis lost about 35 pounds last year had tonsillitis [Music] George Brett on deck there you see the third-base coach Chuck Hiller [Music] Jorge quit but the American League in hits last season Kenny Brett's younger brother to strike pitch to Otis [Music] Amos Otis you see the Oreo alignment how they play Amos Otis Otis still only 29 years old down to seventh year Otis [Music] as you can see a lot of empty seats here in ball they've been averaging 15,000 per game they just made a million last year on the last day the last home date they went over the million mark Wheelz having a rough time attendance fries some people think that it's strictly a football city [Music] - and two - Amos Otis three - two Orioles lead we're in the top of the seventh in Baltimore Kansas City trying to assure themselves of holding on to the eight game lead depending on what Oakland does later tonight against New York that'll be Alexander against Norris next week Dodgers and Padres and if the rotation continues the same Randy Jones the fix for the Padres the next Monday night's game is already 120 and the other game New York and Boston Otis brown ball Bollinger and that's it for came to City one two three a strong any a good comeback by Rudy May shall we go to the home seventh down Baltimore three Kansas City - shaving cream my hemorrhoid symptoms mr. it isn't all easy but umpires have a pretty good including family and retirement benefits and it's going to get better dedication and hard work are vital but I think you'll agree a major league baseball career is worth him the preceding a message on behalf of Major League Baseball that's what it looks like right there they eye on the back Amos Otis the centerfielder this is de sensei leading off the Orioles seven Baltimore leads three to two if Kansas City should lose in Oakland wins Oakland cuts it to seven with 32 to play the sensei old for 2 tonight grounded out and popped out from Burbank California ductus unsane 26 years old he'll be 26 August 29th remember he was drafted by the Padres but did not want to play at that time for San Diego and waited football aborted Reverend dr. sensei one-on-one the ward is that the sensei is almost traded for rusty Staub before this season but the myth said no they went with stager and then of course table was traded for mickey lowlich there you see mark belanger number seven on deck to to to the sensei's [Music] Andy Hassler six-five 215 pounds from Texas City Texas they picked him help to replace Busbee who of course went on the disabled list 3-2 he walked him so Hassler walks the second man in two innings and that will big up for Landrum and possibly Bob Gibson with a three to two lead here in the seventh we could possibly look for a bunt perhaps an insurance run Bob Baltimore there you see Billy hunter well I've ever imagined a ballclub I sure would get him over to second base some way Billy Hunter who of course talked about trades was involved in the biggest trade in baseball history they to see Galen Cisco now usually when Cisco goes out it's merely to talk to the pitcher look at that bubble but the afore EO Fat Boy thank you that's going to be bigger than his face talking about trades and Billy Hunter hunter was involved in the biggest trade in baseball history now you see mark littell warming up for Kansas City Brickman the umpire is going to have to walk out and break up this conference 17 player deal Billy Hunter Yankees Orioles back in 54 guys like Turley and Larsen Terry Byrd involved in that deal triandos gene woodling 9 4 8 deal including filly hunter the oil third-base coach alright the Sun say at first ball and you the batter Brett comes in a third looking for the bunt there it is he takes it for a ball three two two Baltimore leading looking for an extra run here which would of course take away the bump from Kansas City should they score [Music] the sensei short lead off first vilandra is old for two squares to bunt missus how are you as a boner diffic but you sacrificed a man along most of the times oh yeah that was a good Bunner works when you when you pitch you have to learn how to punt there's some guys they don't bow but not too many pitches most pitchers can buck there's nothing else to do but learn how to George Brent in a third base Mayberry of course will come in from first one one double Angier and he takes it high for a ball now of course Hassler wants to throw it high because the pitch is hard to fun well he's not that high though yeah a high pitch usually you have a tendency to pop that thing up and that's why they want up there usually you throw it up and in not up in the way he's getting away a little bit you throw it up and have a tendency to bunt it in the air to a wonderful answer and he misses the fun again I'm watching his technique and bunting and you can definitely tell that that he's a hitter or he's not a pitcher because pitchers know a lot of fun he's trying to bump that ball with his back behind the plate and that's not the way to do it all right now assuming they take the bunt sign off the lander with a 2-2 count the sensei at first nobody out Baltimore least three to two were in the bottom of the seventh inning well a interest swing and a Miss the sensei back to first so on this tape vilandra fails to do his job of moving the runner up that'll bring up Paul Blair Blair's old for 2 tonight struck out and grounded out Billie owner down at third base was a shortstop of the oil's fact when they first came here in 54 [Music] [Music] one ball a Blair a hapless still thrown real good out here of course it's a cool day you know it's cool weather Paul Blair the batter fouled off we're in the bottom of the seventh inning as we welcome the people from the Cincinnati st. Louis ball game the Orioles lead 3 to 2 Warner wolf along with Bob Gibson here in Baltimore the sense a at first one out layers the batter Hassler against Rudy made Baltimore with two of the six took the lead three to two significance in the game of Port if Kansas City should lose an Oakland win Oakland would cut at the seventh if Kansas City wins in Oakland loses than Kansas City increases their lead to nine one one the Blair [Music] the fifth hit off Andy Hassler Paul Blair is first doctor since a at second Duncan a schedule Oriole banner Duncan old for 2 tonight and here comes Whitey Herzog and that will be it or and the Earl Hassler so that's it for Hassler who leaves after going six and one third inning [Music] so has to leave leading to runners on base faster after winning four in a row and Mark littell will come in and try and hold it at least three to two for Kansas City Mark littell who has come on strong as a relief pitcher for Kansas City now for those people watching the Reds Cardinals game let's go back in that area with Al Michaels so this is mark littell the tell this season for Bulevar has once excuse me for the Kansas City as he comes in to face Baltimore as one seven and lost three and has a earned run average of 1.75 and is one of the big reasons the Royals are in first place we'll be back in just a moment I [Music] remember the feeling the first time he held me in his arms and the best thing is I still feel the same way today it shouldn't matter that you wear dentures not if you use new formula Polident we've added more cleansers to Politan more oxygen whitener and the unique penetrating ingredient Auld like this new formula the best cleaning paladin ever so you can stay close as always you formula politic we want you to stay close how well tests showed bencher grip held up to 40 percent stronger at the end of 7 hours how well does your denture adhesive hold at 7 hours try denture grip compared to the leading powder adhesive then sure grip holds up to 40% stronger at the end of 7 hours ASD Freddie Patek standing next to duck descent co-ceo Patek little guy 5'4 gets a lot of letters from little kids all over the country the thing that I read most of all the letters is their rejection because they are so small I think this this kind of tends to hurt them they hurt themselves because they feel this I think if they had a positive attitude saying that if given the chance I'm gonna go out and show them that I can do the job and if I can do it I'm gonna make the team and if I can't alive at least I was given a chance and you know that's that pretty hot tank all right this is Mark littell coming in for Kansas City this is his third year with the Royals two and five last year underwent surgery to remove a bone chip in his elbow and he's come back this year seven and three 23 year-old mark littell the sensei at second Blair at first one out call him all each three to two this is Duncan who's old for two the sensei and Blair of course all the responsibility of the outgoing pitcher Andy Hassler who cannot win this game he can only lose it at best he gets off the hook mark littell they call him country [Music] one strike pitch to Duncan is high it was odd to me to see Duncan swing up that first pitch here a guy comes in on the bullpen you haven't seen him yet and it seems to me with with the guys on first and second maybe the possibility to scoring a run you take a look at a pitcher so boy he went hacking right away of course Duncan might say well I thought he'd try to get the first one over undoubtedly he'd say that the sensei at second Blair at first one out one on one and there goes the sensei the throw to third he is [Applause] the O'Neill's on the attempt to double steal the sensei the Hitman is thrown out at third [Music] you know here is another shot of that double steal Baltimore had nothing to lose by that guy got thrown up going this third base and they still have a man in scoring position at second so that was a pretty good play I thought the only thing they lose is of course instead of two shots at it now it's all up to Duncan but as you point out dippy that's right they still have a man in scoring position you favor behind they wouldn't ride dumb so Blair goes the second two outs to ball one strike pitch to Duncan hello [Music] the tariff came up as a starting pitcher and there was a question whether he could take the everyday wear and tear as the relief pitcher following surgery he has proved that he can't to to to Duncan with Blair at second Harper on deck should Duncan get on Baltimore leads three-two to Oakland in New York we'll start in about one hour Alexander against Norris Blair at second to to to Duncan almost went for an outside pitch Cardinals lead the red six to one and the eighth inning so the Cardinals two straight weeks hitting the Reds on ABC's Monday Night Baseball [Music] three and two to Duncan Blair at second two outs in the Orioles seventh left field Wilfred has it range and that's it the Orioles do not score and lose a golden opportunity a good relief job by Mark littell three to four more after seven here's your car battery add water keep it clean it lasts an average of 38 months here's the battery that will make yours obsolete the JCPenney battery it started a revolution in car batteries you never have to add water it's so powerful it's fully warranted for as long as you own your car if it fails returned it will replace it free only a JCPenney Auto centers or catalog desks it's the last battery your car will ever need mileage is important whether you're taking a trip or running errands so you should know that the 1976 bag of wagon is rated at 35 miles per gallon in the epa highway test 24 city remember ECA ratings are estimates and your mileage may vary price is important too and the basic bag of wagon is the lowest price 76 wagons building America see your chevy dealer about a Vega wagon from America's family station wagon builder I'm Pete Rose they say I'd rather play baseball than eat that's not quite true but it's close [Music] it's a place where you can take the whole family a baseball game offers something for everyone there's fun there's excitement there's dispensed clean air friendly neighbors and good food too preceding a message on behalf of Major League Baseball and oh forget next week once again the Dodgers and Padres and if the rotation goes accordingly Randy Jones will pitch for the Padres on Monday Night Baseball next Monday night here on ABC also the Yankee Red Sox game from New York now the Orioles have made a change they have put Tim Northbrook at first place LeMay is out of the ballgame they see young Tim Northbrook who grew up in the Baltimore area the Royals here in the eighth inning we'll send up Brent McRae and Mayberry excuse me I believe I said Northbrook at you sir correction you sir at first base for Baltimore Tony mucin [Music] Brett tonight oppa three came into this game hitting a 333 so put Mew sir at first base replacing LeMay and excuse me for the correction [Music] apologize to all the tempura fans Brett - for a hit tonight course any time a guy is hitting 333 this late in the season and he's old the three and up for the fourth time without a hit he is due [Music] goes to the opposite field single is coming on he shot [Music] Bret's having a hard time he set out a couple of games because he wasn't hitting he started to get his timing back and didn't like when he hits the ball good they're they're making good catches on him he just can't catch a break right now here's mccrane old for three came into this game hitting a 355 Kansas City trails 3-2 where they ate a Oriole bullpen Dyer Miller and chippy Martinez outside the McCrae they'll be trying to keep that ball away from these guys so they won't be able to tie this thing up with a homerun 1 & 2 strike that's that far away Rudy may still in there nine hits he has given up flyball left field another easy play for singleton to now so the secret tonight Abreu team a grit and MacRay coming into this game hitting 333 and 355 respectively have gone o or eight combined and that is why Rudy mate holds a three to two lead despite giving up nine hits be very 1 for 3 tonight singled in the fourth inning [Music] right bill Jackson / Mayberry is going to try for two and the throw in the second a two base hit for Mayberry backed up by the sensei Reggie didn't exactly put on full speed for that to base hit down the right-field line Bob I think he was worried about that ball ricocheting off of that wall out there we take another look at that Mayberry hit that ball is pretty close down that line there if that ball hits that wall and ricochets past him then he's going to get in there for a triple so he took his time of course Mayberry went in second base with a double I guess the defense of Jackson as he takes a little refreshment from his pocket and also I guess of course he's very familiar with the shall we say speed of John Mayberry right so Mayberry now the tying run at second base and here's Cowens who's two for three single and a double Mayberry tying run at second two outs in the Kansas City 8th Cowan's up the middle rich backhand long throw to first safe they bury goes for third so quick although not throwing out Cowan did stop the ball from going forward preventing Mayberry from scoring the tying run Carlos may is a little unhappy about that he made a real good pitch on the hitter and a guy was walking up to hit the ball in front of the plate and took that big high hop nobody could do anything about it now Rudy may has now given up 11 hits there's that ball bouncing off that plate didn't land until it was behind second base there's nothing you can do about it say your what if that's astroturf but this game is played to Kansas City that's a base hit to center field why tell you what in this to the run would have scored so Kansas City now but Mayberry a third challenge at first Frank white the banner he's two for three is single and a double he knocked in the first run of the ballgame and Frank wants a new bat [Music] I think he had too much pine tar on there and the joke brutemen the umpire made him wipe it off yeah there's a there's a search length that you can go down the bat with fine cars if you get it down too far they will make you wipe it off function at a face it against Minnesota last year and they know about the base hit Minnesota complaint his pine tar was too high on the back so Kansas City runners at first and third two outs eighth inning Kansas City trails 3-2 to right side which backs up throw to first that's it the Royals do that score with a single and a double we go to the bottom of the eighth Bowl of our three Panza city to [Music] there is an evil that lurks at the end of the day that evil is the shadowy cream someone makes your face rough and ugly but the Gillette track two even gravity can stop this paper made from writing because it's the only been in the world with a tiny ink pump that forces ink to the point [Music] japanese papermate the unstoppable pen as we see Tommy Harper in the oriole dugout a reminder this Saturday on ABC's Wide World of Sports the 300 mile late-model stock car race for the famed Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach Florida also Wide World of Sports will be in Philadelphia with the National AAU weightlifting championships featuring competition in the heavyweight and super heavyweight classes Plus from the Royal Lipton and st. Anne's Golf Club in England you'll be seeing this year's Curtis Cup Golf Championship as ABC's Wide World of Sports this Saturday five o'clock Eastern and Pacific four o'clock Central Time over most of these ABC stations our hungry will come on here in the Oriole eighth-inning [Music] [Applause] [Music] and bad for Tommy Harper go Bumbry off the bench bummer hitting a 266 we had the great rookie season [Music] good burner al Bumbry [Music] Bobby Grich on deck [Music] Cardinals defeating the red seven to one they beat him nine to five last week any two straight weeks beating the ribs about that McEnaney the loser so the red lead is cut to eight and a half the Dodgers are idle the Dodgers do not play they now trail by eight and a half and if I'm not mistaken it's 7:00 in the lost power 3 and 2 to al Bumbry Alonso Benjamin al Bumbry he's got him so littell who came on in the seventh inning strikes out full bring his britches keep the free singled and doubled knocked in the tying run [Music] [Applause] [Music] one out here on the bottom of the eighth three two to fall upon if you're looking ahead to the Kansas City night it'll be contact Martinez and Wolford unless Whitey Herzog goes to the bench two balls to Bobby Grich there you see Reggie Jackson where as the tail throws really hard he's got a good slider best pitch fastball and he'd bring it right now three and over to Grich and lequel walks off the mound [Music] one problem these pitchers have when a weather gets cooler like this is that they try to overthrow because they feel real strong in Austin so Creek walks and that will bring up Jackson how they cure Reggie Jackson well I guess the depends who comes to the game on which night I think there's a few booths in there - were you ever food bub at home watch pitching and then two-thirds of innings the score was 11 to nothing against you against me and when I walked up they fooled me I tip my hat then they cheered Richard first with one out Jackson hitless tonight another one for free four to three is scoring which goes to second to down and that will bring up LeMay so Jackson goes 1 for 4 [Music] well actually I didn't give up 11 when I left the game the score was eight to nothing and I had two men on and Nelson brows came in behind me gave up a home run and it may eleventh those two runs were mine though at least you can't accuse the manager of yanking you too fast he didn't have time to warm up oh I think his muse who came on for LeMay in the previous inning you sir of course came over from the White Sox last year the Jesse Jefferson deal NuStar hitting at 225 you sir unfortunately excellent feeling first place what has always played behind the good hitting first baseman Scott Richie Allen LeMay 282 lifetime coming into this season Tony Muser with Grich at second and two outs [Music] littell came onto the seventh inning with one out and two on and got the Orioles out with any damage there you see Reggie Jackson finishes the night one before unless Kansas City ties the game he'll look span [Music] I don't have many people here but they're making a lot of noise one ball two strikes to Tony Muser Grich at second two outs three to four more bottom of the eighth [Music] [Applause] that does put the Dodgers only seven down on the lost column well the Reds losing in the Dodgers idle its eight the half foot it's seven in the lost column and that of course is words all that in that loss column you can't make up the losses as they say Sparky Anderson said they will not catch them there will be nothing like that alright one tune abuser pops him up what bread cold that's it so the Orioles do not score early eight we go to the top of the light it's Baltimore 40 Kansas City to we'll be back with more baseball after this this is ABC [Music] Thursday night September the 9th ABC ushers in it's an 11th consecutive season to the NC double-a college football from Tempe Arizona as the Sun Devils of Arizona State hosts the Bruins of UCLA Arizona State of course ranked number 2 in the nation undefeated untied 75 victors over Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl facing the defending Rose Bowl champion UCLA so that's the premier NCAA college football live Thursday September the 9th this is Davey Nelson Nelson pinch-hitting for Freddie Patek Nelson of course has played with a Cleveland Indians because with the Washington Senators and now with the Rangers Nelson hitting a 233 now it's the right app Bollinger comes him down to those one down on the night now they put they put Nelson in there to to hit a home run that's the only reason they would pinch-hit for pot tech and to me it seemed like he'd have to go down either hitting a fly ball and fallen on his face swinging at it he's only hitting one home run Bob well they didn't put him in there then [Laughter] this will be cookie Rojas off the bench so Rojas will bat for Wolford here's the guy that's been around I guess he faced him many times oh yeah cookie also played with us for a couple years over with the carving he's been around a long time good ball player he's a good second baseman not going to hit many home runs but he moves that ball around pretty well so Rojas pinch-hitting for Martinez [Music] Rojas sitting at 2:30 just a reminder this game telecast under television rights granted by Major League Baseball solely for the entertainment of the beauty audience any publication reproduction retransmission or other use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of this game without the explicit written consent of Major League Baseball is prohibited any commercial or other use of the program such as charging admission for it showing is similarly prohibited one on one to octavio cookie Rojas 37 year old cookie Rojas 16th year in the majors and cookies been 37 years old for about 37 years [Laughter] came up with a Reds traded to the Phillies Cardinals Curt Flood deal to the Royals 264 lifetime to to to cookie Rojas Otis is on deck Rudy May working on a neat 11 hitter pitch to Rojas makin 12 hit base hit pin ship single for cookie Rojas may is now given up 12 hits he's still in there it's not the number of hits is the number of men that come across that plate and Rupert Jones will pinch run for Rojas a gain of about 15 years there Rupert Jones only 22 Rojas 37 so Rupert Jones young gentleman they call up from the minor leagues now you see number 23 Tippie Martinez came over the porch of the Yankee Dale I don't understand this would be a perfect time if you're going to change pitchers maybe it's because he wants to keep that left-handed pitchers looking at the man on first I really don't know Dyer Miller the right-hander Wolford to before Judy may long he's got it on the play roof against the second salt with two outs the Royals have the tying run at second base of this all up to Amos Otis a high bouncer and again Bob Gibson if this is astroturf that is a base hit for Wolford that's right that ball would have gone way over third baseman's head Rudi made a real good play out of that turn around and throw him out something you have to do though that pitch no longer pitcher you're in silver you got to learn to do something with it that's right alright this is Otis Otis - before singling to double came into this game hitting at 294 keep in mind Otis 14 for 38 against Baltimore 14 for 38 in the ten games head-to-head against Baltimore I think maybe Bob Gibson if I had to pick one guy considering Brenton McRae ro for 8:00 tonight this is the guy I'd won up if I was Kansas City yeah I agree with you Rupert Jones the tying run at second base with two outs a base hit and he scores Rudy may hanging on he's given up 12 hits two outs of the night there it goes centerfield we're back he's got it [Music] with a quill hitter Kansas City losses and of open wins tonight the Kansas City lead which was once 12 will be cut to 7 games want a lift America and climb into a 76 Camaro Camaro is a driver's car low in profile and wide between the wheels a spirited responsive road car that feels as good as it looks a lift America not just a ride sample at yourself test drive a spirited 76 Camaro and your Chevrolet dealers know you know it used to take 43 Marc thrown bare baseball cards to get one call Furillo so I was surprised when the light beer people call me to do this commercial I mean I do drink Light beer and it tastes great it's got 1/3 less calories than their regular beer and it's less filling but you know I'm kind of worried because if I do four light beer what I did for baseball I'm afraid their sales might go down like beer from Miller everything you always wanted in a beer unless this is ABC [Music] as we see Amos notice fly out to end the ballgame for the tying run on second base the final score Baltimore 3 Kansas City 2 this is Warner wolf for Bob Gibson reminding you that ABC's Monday Night Baseball returns next week over most of these ABC stations you'll see Los Angeles at San Diego with Randy Jones our Boston at New York check your local listings for the game at time in your area travel arrangements mate through in a promotional fee paid by united
