I'm Mike Jackson I'll give you the news behind the headlines on NewsCenter 5 it's been a week of big baseball headlines with performances on the field and surprises off the field Ron Davis came out of the Yankee bullpen to tie a record by Fanning eight straight meanwhile the magic of Fernando Valenzuela continues last night he wove that magic in New York and turned back the Mets with another shutout meanwhile off the field Maury wills becomes the first casualty in the managing core and Harry Dalton is slapped with a $50,000 fine we'll take a look as we prepare for baseball on this Saturday NBC Sports presents Major League Baseball an inside look at baseball in a preview of today's games of the week brought to you by Old Spice the man sent so many women love and by the Miller Brewing Company Brewers of Miller High Life if you've got the time we've got the beer it's been sprinkling most of the day in Cincinnati but the dark clouds have opened up a little bit to allow the sunshine to come through the crowd late in arriving but we're expecting over 30,000 to witness today's game at Riverfront matching the Reds against the Houston Astros good afternoon again everyone I'm Brian Gumbel welcome to baseball on NBC two very good games on tap this one in Cincinnati has the Reds going against the Astros our other comes to you north of the border from Montreal where the Expos hosts the Giants we think we've got a good show on tap we're going to take a look at the rookies of the major leagues some of the outstanding ones and we're going to have a look at the outstanding rookie in baseball he is Fernando Valenzuela he wove his magic last night in New York we're also going to talk about baseball's gang but let's turn our attention to managers because they are in the news Jim Fregosi was given the warning by the Angels this week that if he doesn't shape out he'll be gone gone is exactly what Maury wills is hired last year to manage the Mariners he will not last off the season after a six and eight team start Maury wills was told goodbye because not only where the Mariners playing in at baseball but as one of his coaches said Maury had lost the respect of his players and so the ex Dodger is out and in is Rene lachemann Rene coming in now at 36 the youngest manager in the major leagues his debut a success when the Mariners turned back the blue the Milwaukee Brewers by a final score of 12 to one thereby saving Mike Park from setting a new American League record he had lost 18 straight dating back to opening day of 1980 meanwhile the Milwaukee Brewers continue to have their problems Cecil Cooper is sidelines Ted Simmons has some physical problems now Robin Yount has a knee problem and that man you see stroke from the double right there Paul Molitor injured his ankle best guess is he will be out for at least eight weeks meanwhile the madness continues from the stands Busch Memorial Stadium the other night in st. Louis a very ugly incident Eddie Miller a rookie left fielder for the Atlanta Braves struck thrown object thrown by some idiot from out of the stands Miller was able to remain in the ballgame and then add a traumatic conclusion George Hendrick trying to put the ball game out of reach Miller goes up on the wall and he comes away with justice Kemp comes away with a save take that meanwhile it continues to be rave reviews for Ron Davis goose Gossage is the ace out of the Yankee bullpen but how about Davis he came out at ni on last week struck out eight straight thereby tying an American League record for consecutive strikeouts Bert Blyleven came within an inning of a no-hitter he went in the night with one but watch this Lloyd Mosby hits one the left-center Larry Littleton in for defensive purposes stick a fork in and Larry it was called a double it was ruled a hit hardly mattered because the next batter got a hit Blyleven wound up with a two hitter meanwhile Harry Dalton made the biggest news when it was reported that he was fined $50,000 by an owner relations committee for speaking his piece about the ongoing negotiations between the Players Association and management up until today we had not been able to confirm the existence that fine but this morning we were able to confirm that indeed Harry Dalton was fined $50,000 by an owners committee so there are a couple of facts that have to come about from this number one the committee does exist the committee is empowered to talk for the management council is empowered to find those people in the front office who may express an opinion about the ongoing negotiations that leads to the second point while a number of people have talked about freedom of speech have said that baseball is trying to limit that I think it worth noting that baseball does indeed have a right to ask its people to speak with one vote with one voice rather and to say that by keeping those people silent it helps the ongoing negotiations that leads to the third point now that Harry Dalton has spoken out you wonder just how United the owners the other front office people might be in their fight against the Players Association and that of course leads to the fourth point which is that if Dalton spoke out like that will his cause not become a rallying point for some other people who might be thinking the same way indeed it gets a little more confusing each day as we approach that May 29th deadline with the possibility of a baseball strike looming larger and larger as each day passes but let's turn our attention to the fans because in addition to the players the front office people it is the fans we have the most to lose the issues are confusing and not all the fans know all the issues but during spring training we got to go around many other sites in Florida ask the fans that they have to take a side whose side would they be on I think I'll be synthetic management I really don't feel that the players have you know a real legitimate gripe now if they do I haven't heard it maybe the management because the players do make a lot of money for what they really have to do I gotta be for the manager because the players they're too greedy too greedy right down the line I think you ballplayers making too much money number one anymore I mean someone's got to paid him salary sooner or later I wouldn't even mind sitting out a whole baseball season just to see management win this issue will light you up for the players I feel them for the players the players you know they've been given their rights and now the owners are spending their money like crazy and now they want to they want the players to stop the owners from spending their own money which i think is ridiculous and um for the players because the owners are ruining it they're the ones that are letting them you know when I had two free agents they don't have to give him all the money if they want to give him the money let him have the money but they don't want to give the money don't force men to be slaves I'm on the fan side I think they should play baseball I think they should be able to settle their dispute and give us a game I'm not gonna be or anybody side I think that the players have a right to or get what they can get I think the owners have a right to make as much money as I can so it's a bargaining process that I think has to run its course that's the American Way what do you think and so the issue is compensation the arguments confusing the war well no winners an awful lot of losers the key date May 29th we're gonna step aside for just a moment we come back we'll talk about happier times the new kids to town I look at the rookies we'll get to that right after this [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] okay come on Slough up it's more time when it's time to relax [Music] [Music] a little old spice has a lot of rewards mold spices the clean fresh masculine scent so many women love so even if you love only one woman your love all the spice the man sent so many women love it's Tom Landry something about a contract Tom Landry contract well I want to talk to you about em I see em I see must be a new team in the week no mi see mortars insurance corporation from General Motors there are real pros and auto insurance auto insurance em I see sure you get it at your GM dealer so with your next new or used car sign with a pro one of the most exciting aspects of any new baseball season is the injection of new blood into a ball club by rookies at present there are thirty rookies in the National League 33 in the American League and some of them are simply outstanding let's take a look at some of the better ones Jean Nelson he has the distinction of being the youngest player in the major leagues birth date December 3rd 1960 and pitching of the major leagues he won his debut on Monday Ron Davis got the save gene Nelson beat the Yankees the oldest rookie unturned beat the Angels the oldest rookie in the major leagues that distinction goes to Marshall Edwards left-handed outfield at the Milwaukee Brewers born August 27th 1952 that was his first major league hit it came against the Toronto Blue Jays Marty bites from still a rookie although he has already pitched the World Series and become a hero a person known to a lot of people five and Oh last year but not enough days to disqualify him from being a rookie and then there is maqsudi Babbitt he's a second baseman for the Oakland A's helping Billy Martin work the miracles despite being a walk-on in the Oakland camp you know felt about being here this early in the big leagues I went to screen trends and non Roxie Flair I got a chance to play fortunately I was pretty impressive toward Billie and you took a chance of taking along as part of the everyday players the hottest is Tim Raines he's the man they called up hoping to replace Rhonda Lafleur at the front of their lineup give him some speed and some hitting reigns has given them that and more he's been hitting since opening day well over at 340 he leads the major league in stolen bases he has stolen 26 they say he's going but you can't stop him he has only been stopped once so far this year he stole for last night but purely the most sensational rookie in the major leagues this year is that young man 20 year-old Fernando Valenzuela who has come out of Mexico simply to spin magic across the major leagues he has won seven ballgames he has five shutouts he has a miniscule e ra and even though he can't speak English he gets understood he said he loves the Dodgers very much he can't wait till he gets out he loves beautiful Dodger Stadium he thinks the Dodgers are the greatest loves to play for Tommy Lasorda he said Tom Lasorda the finest manager he's ever played that's English with the Lasorda interpretation the words may be a little different but Fernando's thoughts are the same last night Fernando pitched in New York against the Mets it was another shutout we're gonna take a look at young Fernando Valenzuela 'he's first trip to Broadway Viva Valenzuela right after this [Music] chick super to announces don't just get close get macho close with the new super tooth wind blade home to the ultimate shock for shave so close there fits at your end track two razors [Music] [Applause] [Music] here didn't believe you two could build your own I guess we'll just take our lone Bronco well maybe one quick look around you want a taste of a truly great American beer tonight let it be low and brown [Music] just what are they doing right now UCLA becomes the battleground for the high hurdles as Renaldo de Maya and rival Greg Foster's square off then rubber burns and engines roar in the NHRA World Finals of drag racing plus the AIA w women's collegiate Swimming Championships tomorrow in his hit song New York New York Frank Sinatra makes the point of that beautiful city that if you can make it there you can make it anywhere and so last night was one very big night in the life of Fernando Valenzuela his first appearance in New York City he passed the test with flying colors last night he continued to carve out master project same kind of master projects he has been doing since the seasonal has never begun his career like this not even Joe Hardy of Damn Yankees fan Fernando Valenzuela beat the Mets one to nothing for a seventh straight win and his fifth shutout he's been drawing huge audiences wherever he pitches last night he played to almost 40,000 everybody want to see him they're flocking out to the ballparks everybody all over he pitch in Montreal last Sunday 46,000 50,000 fans saw an opening day in LA that's to be expected but he also drew good crowds on the road in San Francisco and San Diego and Houston and you know what that translates into needs more walks to the bank crowds mean money last night there were an estimated 65 hundred cars in the parking lot that's compared to a normal amount of 25 4,000 more and that adds up to $11,000 in added parking revenue ticket sales are an average night at Shea bring in 62,000 last night those sales totaled an estimated two hundred nineteen thousand that's roughly a hundred and fifty seven thousand chopped up to Fernando it's a quadrupling of what the moment business has been for the last few nights and it's no question though we have people coming in tonight who have not been out to have dinner at Shea Stadium in years when the crowds pour in all the vendors the stadium stands to profit it is estimated that each fan spends about five dollars on hotdogs on liquid refreshment other souvenirs that figures out last night at Shea - an additional one hundred and forty two thousand dollars that was taken in nice crowd is exceptionally good at least ten times the mass that we [Music] obviously all the extra fans can't be credited to the 20 year-old pitcher the doctors draw better than most visitors to Shea Stadium but there was little doubt young John Doe was the center of attention so an tada Fernando Valenzuela pitching at Shea Stadium the difference 157,000 and edit ticket revenue 142,000 and at vendor revenue 11,000 and added parking revenue total for the night Fernando Valenzuela one and nothing over the Mets for the Mets three hundred and ten thousand dollars extra in the till and meanwhile his numbers of his own continue to drop Fernando now is 7 and OH his er-er a is now a minuscule 0.29 and falling we've got baseball - come on NBC it's the Expos and the Giants the Reds and the Astros the executive producer of NBC Sports is Don ohlmeyer today's pregame was produced by David Stern and directed by Harry Coyle feature producers Les Dennis and our associate director John J Filippelli coming up it's the Giants and the Expos great pitch by toughest customers [Music] excuse me sir I'm extremely thirsty you wouldn't happen to have any straws beer would you no but I got some nice cold water no no I I really had a taste with some strobes there goes a real beer lover troubled waters Monday at 10:00 on Chicago's news center channel 5 hi I'm Joe Niekro I think we're gonna win our division this year as we did last year because our pitching staff to me we got the one of the best pitching staffs in baseball and just an indication is walking into I was putting today's game against the Cincinnati Reds he is our fifth daughter and sports starter and he has pitched very well since Vern roll had a back spasm has been injured stay tuned today for the game of the week between the Cincinnati Reds and the Houston Astros [Music] NBC Sports presents [Music] major league baseball game of the week [Music] today from Riverfront Stadium the Houston Astros against the Cincinnati Reds the game of the week is brought to you by Ford and your Ford dealer who invite you to test drive the EXP America's new personal sports coupe and by lowenbrau when you want the taste of a truly great beer there's really only one tonight it's a cloudy day in Cincinnati we've had a slight drizzle neither ballclub took batting practice but we will have baseball this afternoon here at Riverfront Stadium hi everybody I'm Joe Garagiola and alongside me as always Tony Kubek as we get ready for this game between the Astros and the Cincinnati Reds Tony first the Astros they got off to a slow start they seem to have straightened out but they don't have the speed they had last year and last year they went right to the last Bay before they clinched the division so they've had a good road trip and it's good for them to be able to win on the road but you're right the pitching staff is better which is their strong suit they've got Knepper and of course Don Sutton they improve in that department Cedeno has been hurt caballus not here he's been traded Morgan is not here Cedeno is gonna try and play to David he is not running well and Jose Cruz has a band-aid so what ingredient they had last year that generated a lot of innings in a lot of runs base stealing is not here this year for Houston you think it will hurt him that much I think ultimately it could because that they've really got a scratch four runs and then they need the speed and take the extra base enforcement state which they cannot do as much of this year let's jump to the other side of the field of Cincinnati Reds Johnny Bench wanted to play two days a week he's playing first base because Driessen is hurt but the big man still is Foster's got a hit guys like Collins are getting on concepción is still driving in runs posters any well Foster's got to be the run producer for them benches got hit also and and Johnny's played first base well but he's still not swing with that long came a win with bench not behind the plate I think if they're young pitching staff comes through yes they can I think the young pitching well we'll see it'll be for Cincinnati a young Houston will have this afternoon [Music] go with the flow with the flow and go and go because our point won't go with the flow good year and all season radio a steel belted radio an advanced radio designed for traction all year round even its footprint tells you it's different how do you get around in all kinds of weather oh limousine diamonds in arriba arriba only from Goodyear [Music] it's part of the game but off the field I want to feel nice and dry and I want to smell nice that's why I use speed sticks super dry antiperspirant it's the wide stick effective protection with more dryness to help fight wetness and it goes on dry so you can get dressed right away so get on the stick the wide stick speed stakes super dry antiperspirant alive [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] the preceding message was furnished by major league baseball by this Dave Smith of the Houston Astros and this is our lineup for today leading off is Terry Puhl got three hits yesterday swinging a real hot bat batting second is Craig bimbo Reynolds slick fielding shortstop batting third is Cesar Cedeno he's been hurt for about a week and it's good to have him back to the lineup again batting fourth from cleanup there's Jose Jo chop-chop Cruz and I'll turn it over to joe sambito batting fifth Russ Danny Heep a fine young hitter batting sixth man I think has the same hairstylist as joe gergiolla art Hal batting seventh the master of smash Alan Ashby batting 8th young man we acquired from the California Angels for Ken force Dickie thon and batting ninth one of the most colorful men in baseball walking mr. cool what I do Andujar and I'd like to wish a very happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there in a very special happy birthday to my mother in New York [Applause] here's the defense for Cincinnati behind beretti George Foster and left Ken Griffey and Senator Dave talented right that's the change during this past offseason fifty movie in the center field ray Knight at third Dave concepción at Short Ron Ulster swinging a good bat at second base and look at the man at first base JB Johnny Bench was playing well defensively Joe Nolan behind the plate and Bruce Ferretti another one of these young pitchers Joe for Cincinnati Bharani is averaging 4.3 strikeouts per nine innings 1980 struck out an average of six there's his record as you see it he's a hard floor let the American Association in strikeouts last season 121 strikeouts and 123 innings pitched so I think a key for him John in the stats of his minor-league record in Indianapolis he also walked 100 in that season Billy Fisher the pitching coach uses the veteran Tom Seaver unlocked with these young pitchers ready with a live fastball but in receiver two years ago who talked to Frank Pastore and said listen you too much of a gentleman be more of an animal when you're on the mound he has given the same speech to Ferretti who they say is a little bit mild-mannered even for his side so he wants to go out there take charge if he does is I will care him the rest of the way his size he's a big guy 63 215 born in Bryan Ohio Bruce / ñè here is Terry Puhl one home run five runs better than hitting 240 strike one don't guarantee Allah with Tony Kubek here at Riverfront Stadium neither ballclub took batting practice slight drizzle but no rain right now one ball one strike cool if 13 home runs last year five of them leading off the ballgame his first home on this season came in the first inning leading off kiddo a few years ago went unnoticed but he has gotten better than almost every department in the last three years centerfield could be coming hard he's not going to get it and there's that artificial surface coming into play and it's an easy two base hit there is the Houston Astros game leave home plate full tilt cut the bag sharply and keep on going the tribe forced mistakes there's Terry Puhl he did not at the ball Wow Griffey is playing on a sore knee in surgery he had all a winner or so ago has not fully recovered he's really been hurt by this artificial surface with all the pounding he has to do on it so they got a face runner on its second and that brings up brick rentals with one job to do even this early the ball game especially with the threat of rain pull the ball Hill it to the right side you'll be able to do that he can handle that bat he shortened up as if to bunt maybe dragging one night is in close at third if there is a there you see a picture of night creeping into third base he's gonna try and go bench his way either the time drag the ball or pull the ball I would think let's see maybe hitting Ray Knight in time good play moves a man over to 3rd one out and base runner at third Tony if there is a in the armor it has to be the outfield defense as we watch this play again I'll tell you Ferretti gets off the mound he may have a shot you can see he's a bit guys you said Joe Knight makes a nice play the bready gets off the mound he may have a shot at the runner at third base he didn't move it off you're right the outfield for the Reds with Foster left is not throw away land there's Griffey on a bad knee and Collins and right field not considered a good outfielder here is Cesar Cedeno with one home run seven runs batted in 292 tendonitis the ankle Yankel he broke during the playoffs last year he has missed a few ballgames and we were in the training room Don Kiger the trainer's spent an hour and a half trying to get him ready for this game with whirlpool Heat stretching exercises jammed him nice catch by a spectator and great camera work to follow that ball right into the stands as we look at Terry Puhl who's on at third base one man out top half of the first inning Bruce per any at the carters night and Ben should have albeit to them they will try for the runner home plate Poole as speed as an excellent base runner followed up the middle they'll go for the shirt out of her an artificial surface makes you think in a hurry too it's so dangerous to bring guys you can see tonight right here with pool at third base you bring them in too tight at the corners and the guy bounces it over your head two strikes and Burundi keeps coming at him they say the movement on his fastball Joe he gets in there of 91 miles an hour which is not overpowering but it's a good majorly fast but they say the movement makes it very difficult to catch him because live will do anything concepción will get him at first but the run scores and it's one to nothing Houston Jose Cruz coming up I have heard you use the expression down through the years about manufacturing Iran they just manufactured one who legs out of double nice but it's in the third and the ground ball they got to play that way that's one of those comfortable runs the opposition we need uhz n't feel it when you score it like that nobody got hurt but it's still on the scoreboard ball one this man had a slow start to but he has begun to hit two balls and no strikes this year this Houston ball club has led the National League and runners left on base they have not been hitting in key situations last I heard there something like 181 runners left odd days which isn't extremely high to him Bob I'm sure last year they're the same kind of situation three balls and no strikes Bharani against cruz four pitches he walks him he's on we talked our pregame setting up this Shah as we look at Bobby Lillis the first base coach talking to Cruz Cruz injured his leg playing winter ball in Puerto Rico so he is not running as much as he has in the past years Moretti recalled last week if you saw our game has a very slow lake kick goes home slowly Nolan is the catcher Heep is the batter no one made a good throw last night to get a runner it's high ball one I would tend to doubt with Heath batting and that big hole between first and second that crews will be off and running it's been caught four times I only has one stolen base two balls no strikes Danny Heep hit him to 41 511 185 born in San Antonio Texas still lives there and bill Fisher out on the mound John McNamara they manager the Cincinnati Reds great rapport with his pitching coach and talking about it before the game he simply says hey fish you notice anything and facial answer and then he said we'll go out and tell him out he goes I put should be paid out last night Seaver hit a 2-run home run and Seaver fits the shutout and I mean he was a Seaver of all but faces new hood hood fish went out you could see Tom Seaver smile he relaxed him Tom pitch Donna Cruz at first one nothing Houston lady top of the first may have been lady Jo - and all think he will let Heep swing the way try and pull the ball score for first one extra base set got that ball up got it by him the pitch you love two balls one strike let's see if he's gonna go on I flipped cruises bad leg even if that he may start I don't think you will autumns got an argument early oh no give me just a goal he's got a bad leg I'd like to keep that home between first and second going let this guy pull a ball yeah but if he started he hits the ball in the hole and the kid rattles around the court he can score from first base we'll see if he's gone he's holding there's a big night I see a face hit and all of a sudden the big glove jumped up and Danny Heep is robbed of a base head so we going to the bottom half the first day the score here Houston one Cincinnati coming to back [Music] Mustang engineered to turn high mileage into high excitement no wonder America's most popular sports car is Mustang friends you want a taste of a truly great American beer tonight let it be low and Brown [Music] UCLA becomes the battleground for the high hurdles as Ronaldo de Maya and rival Greg Foster's square off then rubber burns and engines roar in the NHRA World Finals of drag racing plus the AIA W women's collegiate Swimming Championships tomorrow hi everybody this is Larry Bittner the Cincinnati Reds and as marther Marie says I don't know why they want me to do this job but in a way here's the batting order for the Cincinnati Reds leading off playing right field is our catalyst on the team Dave Collins hitting second playing center field is ken griffey hitting third is the National League RBI leader Dave concepción batting fourth is our left fielder George Foster and batting fifth is playing first base today is Johnny Bench hitting sixth and catching Toby Joe Nolan hitting seventh playing third base is Ray Knight batting eighth playing second base is Ron Ulster and our pitcher today is young man and throws real good first year in the big leagues boost brynee and on behalf of the Cincinnati Reds I'd like to wish all you mothers out there a very happy Mother's Day here's the defense behind Andujar jose cruz and left sedan you and senator Jerry pooling right Howard the first place alas Pete who's got to be one of the smartest catches in baseball he really knows how to call a game and handle offensive snap John there's Joaquin Crazy Horse I'll do her on the mouth he may give us a shot if he thief he's in the mood he'll give us his show how is moved in the third to protect against the bunt Collins hitting 371 fastball misses ball one I knew her who was pitched for this ballclub and relief dad as a starter fastball not overpowering curve slider also a fork ball looked like a screwball at times go away from the left-handed hitter Dave Collins hitting 371 that's a point behind Raines of Montreal is sensational rookie that Brian was talking about in a pregame show rains it into 372 Collins is slugging at a 557 percentage fastball misses two balls in one strike one nothing Houston's out in front were in the bottom of the first joaquin andujar Willie Mountaineers hot dogs Philip Richie good arm misses with the fastball three and one under are another one of about oh I guess 30 players in the major leagues now from the island of Hispaniola a little country called the Dominican Republic they must have almost 200 players playing professionally minor leagues major leagues call for love talking on to her he says in America one word says it all you never know here's his mouth now the Dominican Republic immediately think up Juan Marichal high leg kick on to her not quite as high as Marichal but you can see the movement he generates toward the plate as he falls off that rubber ken griffey hitting 252 collins a base stealing threat at first base he had 79 stolen bases last season third in the National League LeFleur lead with 97 it's been caught five times this year he has seven stolen bases Ashby has been throwing better this year first half of last year teams ran wild on it but he had a sore arm and then he got a lot better the second part of the year one ball and no strikes as you see the split screen that our crews putting up for you you can as a catcher you would mark where Collins his right foot goes for his lead not quite as far as he was the last pitch two balls and no strikes and as John Neko and given the lineup set Andujar calls his catcher out and says what do I do and the pitching coach Mel Wright comes out and he's going to tell him what to do and that is you better start throwing some strikes honor our does not strike out a lot to be effective his pitching coach now right with Talia as with Bill Virdon the manager he's got to keep the ball down he is not throw hard enough to overpower play hitters up high in this ballpark the ball carries pretty well down in the alleys which are just 375 and Collins with good speed at first Griffey a tough man to double up he's the third toughest in a National League once every 136 times at bat so in lapis dr. merry-go-round two balls no strikes nobody out used to leading one to nothing we're in the bottom of the first Green all I'm too hard [Applause] Islands at first walk T base runners at first and second and Dave concepción to pattern sepcial with two home runs 25 runs batted in hitting it [Applause] [Music] Navy attributes' is fast start he said I am stronger this year I did not play winter ball he's coming off albo surgery left out right algo which bothered him swinging the bat you can still see a trace but when he swings Dhoni he releases that right hand off the back part of that said last year and hurt him more to swing the back and to throw the ball [Applause] there's the strike Sachs Davidson is the umpire behind the plate Terry Tina's at first Jerry Crawford at second ed Barker's at third as we look at Griffey the base runner at first and Collins is on at second now the infielders come in and they can simply say to him what's going on Andujar was famous for this they say he throws over more to first base than any pitcher in the National League he does not throw a whole lot of pitchers during the Carson ballgame but he takes a lot of time between pitches this is the kind of stuff you is probably telling them what pitching pattern he may want to change on conceptual what pitches working farm today he may have found out it's his breaking ball may move them over a couple steps either way and try and align his defense one strike began on concepción popped up foul ball it's going to drift it to the stands Tony to weight things that going on to her has had more meeting the players on a strike issue said about three of them already this any no balls two strikes joaquin andujar guard how 100 out at second base he was in the act of throwing but no double play I don't think that fifty-pound he he had a thought for a second of going to third base aren't how it makes a nice play this is not an easy hop how was playing well off the line look at this looks it right into his glove he may have thrown piling a little bit of a changeup and now the ball pops out he had possession of the ball the second base umpire tater right there giving them alert they look over Jerry Crawford speed without fire seven days tater as at first and after the ball popped out pow he thought he might look over and see me get Collins running the third base bag we have quite a battle going on now between Andujar and George Foster Foster likes to really get set before he gets in and I he's ready we'll hit left-center field nobody will get this one [Applause] they're gonna try to [Applause] look like a high breaking ball upstairs again for onto higher and by not turning the DoublePlay Joosten pots cost itself one run as concepción scores all the way from first you can see the alignment right there as the shortstop goes off to the cutoff backed up by the second baseman George Foster is the big man in this Cincinnati lineup you have to have somebody that can drive that run in from first base and foster can do that as we look at Johnny Bench 18 RBIs [Applause] beam up not cut off the bench moles at first I thought the ball might be fine third base coats luck slicks it was criticized a couple of days ago for getting Joe Nolan trying to hold playful with one out you keep them there take a chance on the sacrifice fly two outs he may have send them and challenge the arm [Music] you talk about Boston bench the little guys have been getting on base for them they start hitting will be a big factor for Cincinnati Foster is the third benches at first and Joan Nolan is the batter hitting at 265 no home runs four runs batted in Nolan and O'Berry 20 catching for Cincinnati as the Houston bullpen gets busy bench had to dive back keep trying to find out it going what's a burden wants him to play behind the runner it is dangerous to do with vents there because Benz has been known to sneak off and steal a face this will be deep enough foster tagging up benches halfway it's three to one Cincinnati [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Johnny Bench remains it first good inning for Cincinnati three runs here is Ray Knight two home runs six runs batted in and him to 25 fastball misses ball one base on balls have her done to her he walked the first two men they lost a double play concepción was safe Foster doubled been single a sacrifice fly and his three to one Cincinnati two balls no strikes tonight trying to battle out of one of those things called a slump some we had three hits in his last 29 times at bat slump is like the common cold I don't care what you do it's going to last for two weeks there's a strike some hitters just don't believe they're in a slump Colavito I remember used to always say I'm not in a slump I'm just not hitting because they hate to use that word different kinds of slump sometimes you're not getting any base hits but treating the ball hard Bart how force that second bench is out that ends the inning it's a good one for Cincinnati we complete wanted in a play here it is Cincinnati the Astros will see how you live whatever you need to trip home lights string trimmers give you all day [Music] for a sergeant good morning [Music] the National League Western Division the Dodgers 19 and 8 lead Atlanta by 4 Cincinnati by 5 San Francisco and Houston by 7 San Diego 10 and a half it's gonna be a good race with all the hoopla given Valenzuela who deserved it to forget that Houten's what for know Atlanta who had such a good second half last winter Bobby Cox are hanging tough and the Montreal Expos are leading the Giants invite a blue one nothing Dodgers 1 Mets nothing Lopes a home run and Sutcliffe against Roberts art Howe Boston 1 Toronto nothing bottom of the third now 18 333 third ball just hung two balls and no strikes Joe Bereta had kind of a long sit down on the bench is that n he was going a couple of walks several other balls hit pretty hard by the reds and many times the younger pitchers affected by that more than an older pitcher over pictures been in these situations out of hand on how to keep himself ready two balls in his strike Bruce fer any hop straight back two balls and two strikes that was a great close up of Bharani as you watched his concentration as he delivered towards the plate his eye on the target watch his eyes with this shot as he delivers towards the plate never took his eye off the target missed it but never took his eyes that's where beretti goes wild down low here's what Joe was talking about Seaver on the other hand is a guy who takes his eyes off that or looks down when he formed that picture window through his arms you know Billy Fisher the pitching coach for Cincinnati worked three days a week all offseason beneath the stands here in this stadium with beretti trying to correct the mechanical flaw and he was talking about his arm dragging behind his body and unlike a lot of high heart throws would go while he goes wild low when he does now back again three and two and that is unusual barn how is hitting eight straight games he's 15 431 in that streak 484 is we see per any little insert bottom part of your screen right at Johnny patch if you got the head you can play anywhere Johnny perhaps does not have as much mobility as he once did but I think what he first came up if he'd have been a third baseman 1st baseman left - right - you could have played any other well the hands help but if you can hit they'll find always for you because you can shake a tree and have gloves fall out so I think it's important to catch her at a third baseman especially to have the quick reflexes quick hands away pitchers balls move away the ball gets on you John's got him it's got the good anti coordination one ball no strikes on that on - beating at 211 no home runs seven runs batted in my chopper it's going to be a tough play he'll not getting poster couldn't come up with it so it's a base hit for Alan Ashby maybe the toughest play that a second baseman had that chopper because he is going away from first base so he has to catch it and throw it all in the same motion and make an off-balance throw artificial surface scent you bet it's a ground ball to the pitcher on grass and Burt see where he tried to feel that ball Brooks Robinson always talked players that on a slow it ball with the affair Hannon or not tried have the ball hit the glove with your right foot touching the ground so that you can catch the ball and throw wait a minute now you have you got a shuffle you're fit you back you listen to Brooks you'll explain if you better night it's gonna slow it ball your right foot it's the ground is the ball of your glove come on throw gotta be Houdini to do that and a lot of dancing lessons you catchers wouldn't understand there's no way you don't have those kind of play right one strike the count Dickey thon one out three two one Cincinnati leading let's see which foot he had as he got the foot Brooke says when the ball hits the glove wrong foot right foot should be touching the ground take away his dance tickets wrong foot one ball one strike you don't have to believe me but believe Brooks okay believe the fame but all those Hall of Famers have these theories after they retire two balls in one strike Bruce Parenti he's got a two-run lead Cincinnati came up with three runs in the first after Houston two taking a one to nothing lead foul ball out of play this telecast is presented by authority of Major League Baseball and is intended solely for the private non-commercial use of our audience and any publication reproduction retransmission or other use of the pictures descriptions and the cons of this game without the express written consent of Major League Baseball is prohibited two balls two strikes one out how to play three one Cincinnati lady Ashby on it first let's put a little bit of a problem spot on a second base for burden first had Morgan there at dinner last year did such an outstanding job last five or six weeks Landis car hasn't been hitting to keep on this playing there today hot smash oyster has it should be - there's one I'm not getting [Applause] good play fountain got down that line in good shape Tony and it's a well he's a base stealer he's one of the bass tutors but take a look at hoster a former shortstop tell me that Joe Gorga made that play well going to his left he was an acrobatic second baseman turned around they'd sure he got the lead runner it comes from another angle poster covers a lot of ground boy did he low bridge him he's sick could see Alan Ashby going down many strides away from the second base bag there's that weapon that the infielder uses as we see end ihara batter's box Andujar a good swinger not much of a hitter oh four five now this I don't understand why is he batting right-handed against right-handed pitchers this is what makes Andujar interesting colorful he's a switch hitter he's trying to confuse the keys or he's confused what are the other two strikes although I've had pitching coaches Tony tell bad hitting pictures you bat the way that keeps your pitching arm away from the pitcher so if you get hit you get hit on the other arm are you really gonna be a bad hitter for a guy to tell you then two strikes that goes to lunar tuck him out three pitches I'm new heart is out first backup for for any ends the second I mean you see is not score we go to the bottom half the second and he's in score Cincinnati 3 in Houston one right guard knows a man needs all the protection he can get that's why a man needs right guard right guard has a male effectiveness formula so strong no matter which right guard you choose they help stop on man's perspiration odor all day long a man works hard but right guard works harder now there's new hard-working right guard solid - I get all kinds in here some like it straight some what a twist but they all want the best disposable razor if they Reds against the Pittsburgh Pirates Plus George spread on the KC Royals take on the Boston Red Sox let's take a look at Friday's National League game San Francisco for Montreal 3 Tim Raines at four stolen bases 26 on the season dodges behind Mellon's whele fifth shutout of the season he's now 7 and 9 run average of 0.29 struck out 11 Dodgers 1 Mets nothing Atlanta for Chicago 3 Hubbard hit a home run for the Braves in the eleventh Phillies beat San Diego 11 and 7 Mike Schmidt at 2 home runs 5 RBIs Oh stair Cincinnati beat Houston last night porter nothing Syria 2 run homer he puts the 6 hit shutout his 54th shutout of his career that's the most among active pitchers Wally Johnson as the all-time record as we looked at those two the count of one in one and st. Louis beat Pittsburgh 5-2 for Bob shirley's now 4 and all there is a strike the American League Seattle three Yankees two Paciorek led off the ninth with the home run to win it and Mariners are now three and O under Lachman Detroit six California one Kemp at a two-run homer and mcaddie and the Oakland A's to Milwaukee nothing Baltimore Texas rained out Minnesota be Cleveland eight to seven Chicago nine Kansas City five in Boston beat Toronto four to two those were Friday night scores off the handle short left field crews coming hard he'll not get her to drop her face it Harjo still having difficulty getting the ball down in the strike zone now he jammed oh stir with that without his rod father the first place coach if he's got the ball down and he gets the ball inside it's a weak ground ball as soon as gets up bail high he just lopped it off and fight it lob the ball and fight it off onto her walk Collins and Griffey and concepción hit the ball hard foster doubled hard to left center field and Bench singled hard to right field Nolan had a long sacrifice fly so under her hasn't exactly put handcuffs on these Cincinnati batters looking for the bunt bunt it Andujar has it no tagging he does those two moves the second [Applause] [Music] let's pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network WMAQ TV Chicago [Applause] Joe guarantee Allah with Tony Kubek at Riverfront Stadium Rose p-21 the bottom of his second and the base runner on at second base Ron toaster hon do hard the pitcher against burr any Collins walked and scored his first time up out of play strike one they had 31,000 here last night another good crowd threatening weather Ron owes to its second base they really play Dave Collins shallow in left and center field if he had a ball down the line or the left-center field gap or right-center field he could run a long time look at the alignment cruising Cedeno one ball one strike that's where the charts come in the super Scouts advance scouts the charting pitchers and players are they hit and narrowed down to a percentage where he is most likely to hit the ball off beats pitcher and if the pitcher executes since Casey would say gotta execute they're usually hit it I guess that's why Joe has so many balls are hit hard and the major leagues that are caught it's not by accident lays off the high pitch two balls in one strike poster its second Cincinnati 3 and Houston 1 we're in the bottom of the second how to play two balls and two strikes John McNamara looking on Bill Virdon on the other side did she coachman all right struck him out high fastball that's the first strikeout for under her so there are two away and it brings up Griffey under our averages eight point four strikeouts per nine innings griffey walked his first time up bah bah one strike no balls two outs under heart very deliberate worker one ball one strike he's not the kind of a guy you want to have pitching for you if you're double-parked you know I don't think he's at good enough control of his fastball and slider yet the even throw everybody for quelled he's been in so much hot water but that fork ball which uses the chain is very important pitch for him he's got to get that over and use it once in a while make that other stuff look a little bit harder two balls and one strike the count he still picks behind he struck out College with a high fastball but he's one guy they do not like to use the radar gun because they use it on Nolan Ryan some of the other hard swords and Andujar tries to throw as hard as they do and he overthrows his ball straightens out there is this strike I've always thought that under heart through a sinker I asked Joe Niekro about that he says he does but you ask Andujar he said he doesn't throw a sinker do you think he knows school walls and two strikes Griffey waiting on a left-field line crews going to have to come hard drifty near the line a fair ball it's a double just barely fair crews looking at the spot it was fair all right [Applause] another one of those not a bad pitch all those up again Drew's on that bad knee if he's got a healthy knee he may have come closer to this ball you can see the ball spin away and luckily for the Astros that it did spin away and going to stand if that catches the corner there and goes in the corner down there that's probably triple maybe inside the park over on Bogg just right inside the line watch it land just kept slicing away from him didn't ya [Music] he couldn't have surveyed it and placed it any better so it's four to one Cincinnati honor and frontiers concepción with 25 RBIs a chance to pick up another one he's leading the league in RBIs tied foul balls made back [Applause] Mike Schmidt with the big day yesterday five RBIs two home runs also has 25 runs driven in [Music] drop the word at last foul ball almost D hard-knock scene Joe Nuxhall with Marty brennidon broadcast for Cincinnati what Hugh luck see look at the runner Griffey at second the youngest pitcher ever to pitch in the big leagues about 15 years old was he and then they set him down way cut that ball he not gonna his next birth almost took his head off one ball two strikes that's a tough play that foul ball it comes straight back no glove one ball two strikes two outs griffeys at second base Cincinnati's out in front four to one we're in the bottom of the second misses with the fastball high and under hard talking to himself with two strikes Davey Concepcion went up on the bat about an interest so a pretty good tip for some of the youngsters watching pitcher gets ahead here give it a little bit you can see he's got that little donut right there get the double knob so the bat doesn't slip out of his hands choked up a little more with two strikes [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] watch onto our drop-down come a little bit from the side trying to get conceptual and backing out and you can see conceptual dust up in the bucket a little bit it keeps the ball inside if he gets the ball away he's got baby he just does not at good control on the heart you come from third base to make the hitter give ground but you got to get that bully outside part of the plate Davey got just enough wood on it to plunk one in there very polite single nonetheless it drove into run [Applause] san francisco Louis San Diego at Philadelphia as we look at Greg Reynolds American League gets the Boston Red Sox four in Toronto to Stan Lee and relief Willis in relief Cleveland nothing Minnesota nothing under to Milwaukee's at Oakland tonight as Kansas City is Chicago Baltimore Texas Detroit to California Yankees play Seattle Joe NOLA behind the plate moment ago they just had a sign mom and dad are here from st. Louis Hill neighborhood right celebrating their 37th wedding anniversary what a beautiful sign that is as Paul misses much like our joe sambito on the given the lineup with Dave Smith Larry Victor a happy Mother's Day tomorrow a beautiful day line drive centerfield Griffey is there I'm sure Billy Fisher and Jill Nolan Joe beretti it's all about four strikes you know ahead of the hitter but don't get out of your groove keep throwing the ball hard for strikes don't get lacks and just say wow we got a four run lead and lay it in there many times a young pitcher will do that he can't get that rhythm back if you should get in trouble that's a tough part about catching this you have to make sure you continue to use all the pitches and not just the fastball to get strikes because then you go to the well for the curveball it's dry as we look at Cedeno might be able to see on that last shot so dangers right ankle which she's got a little bit of a cast on it one hand grab by concepción this 1 2 3 & 4 any has this easiest thinning yet we go to the bottom half of the third inning with the score here Cincinnati 5 Houston 1 and Cincinnati will send up bench going in tonight I can tell a real cowboy from the drugstore kind clean across Texas the way he wears his hat I'll tell you and the beer that you drinks are sure far give away too fearful Miller we love the taste but we surely appreciate that he's got 1/3 less calories than the regular time you see you don't want to be filled up when you're out there punching though doggie beautiful Miller everything you always wanted in a beer unless what's the Midas touch it's a solid shark so tough we guarantee them against any it's a guarantee that says if anything ever goes wrong with a lifeguard super guard or spring guard shop Midas will replace it free as long as you own your car so hit the road with - shocks and you'll never be afraid to hit the road now get four shocks install for the price of three during may get the Midas touch nobody else has it me here and here that's why I use skin bracer from Menand it's for men to take care of their skin every day you have to shaving is rough skin bracer tightens your pores that's the tingle it refreshes your skin and smooths it Hey it's not Cologne its skincare that feels good you need that after shaving you smell terrific thanks I needed that men and skin bracer takes care of men who take care of their skin you can see on this shot of Sedalia on this swing that right ankle now it's taped up in fact he said he is becoming a little more of a front foot hitter you know that's not bad here it is right fit a little bit of a plastic cast for support he does not run very well fathers in Troy fathers in hitting be suddenly I think John is important to this ballclub in all areas that he's gonna have to live with all year long often on school bother yes sir here's Johnny Bench ball one Johnny Bench 30th on the all-time home run list 357 one behind Yogi Berra this time is how comes in they get him I think that fits before Johnny hit the ground ball was interesting because Johnny almost looked like he thought of brushback was going to be thrown he's been around a lot he knows onto our reputation they've been swinging the bats pretty wild on too hard the ball was thrown close to me just leave this head back here Dez watch this well he was striding into the ball but he still turned the head and the shoulder if he was going to get ahead it's gonna hit him in the back he was in control here's Nolan in his sacrifice flies first time up one ball no strikes Joe Nolan st. Louis hometown there's a base hit mama will be happy to be sacrificed blind and face it little Joey is on the Nolan stars interesting he spent eight years in the minor leagues he's been leased by Atlanta picked him up last year did a good job with the bat for Cincinnati he's an offensive player the other catcher that started out with no socks Oh Barry is more of a defensive catcher translated that means one can hit and can't throw and the other one can throw on can't hit I've been in that situation Nolan draws the throw that'll make you feel good very few times you see a pitcher try to pick a catcher off Nolan doesn't have that big lead one ball no strikes Ray Knight has been having some troubles in the batter's box sometimes a manager will put a hit and run play on just to make the batter swing and make him a little more aggressive one man out here the runner does break that would be the only reason one ball one strike Cincinnati meeting by four five the one is a score we're in the bottom of the third Nolan has not been getting a very big lead that got such Davidson he takes the mask off checks it hitting's fair and square right now middle of the mask so one thing always bothered me about a catching a sachet is an umpire sees looks like he's got a jaw in his mouth those babies jolt you in the face messed you swallow a little bit that tabacky juice because your problem for a while you could have terminal heartburn curveball hangs inside walking under har houston's pitching while they've been winning on the road I knew I was checking the count which is not write up on the board they've got on - and it's - another check that's two and two but the pitching staff over the last 14 games reviews the starters are giving up just over all about a run and a half a game that's why they've been winning left-center fails so Daniel over he's there makes the catch and Nolan heads back to first Cedeno in talking to him yesterday said that he re-injured his ankle as he broke towards the left-field line and tried to put on the brakes as the expression he used and he's got some tendonitis a good ballplayer since their sedan yo two outs and Ron Ulster is the batter he's single and scored in his second inning poster is now hit an 11 straight game 17 438 that's a 447 average over that streak ball one host earning from the left side is it in 304 today writing of this season right-handed 250 fair ball misses two balls in no strikes it's many times surprise to me because he is a natural right-handed hitter but I guess just hitting more from the left side he's developed a better stroke down foul ball out of play two balls in the strike the count Nolan heads back to first five to one we're in the bottom of the third Cincinnati is out in front Nolan our lead not much of a lead as you can see two balls two strikes to man out there goes the runner here's the throw it'll knock any and Nolan has himself a stolen base no reason I don't think we're a catcher like Nolan should get that kind of jump off he does not have a good lead as you can see it looks almost like a hit and run situation where he is looking to pick up the ball as he hurried his throw had he gotten there on time Ashby drops down to the side the ball really tailed in charge first grace not an easy pitch to throw on oh no I'm pretty good job he's out if he gets the ball there oh yeah that was one of those defensive plays - I think Tony three and two hot smash under hard knocks it down he's going to get they're on the picture I'll tell you Danny Heep came right down on the bag and the first pace umpire Terry Tator says the throw was beaten but it looked to me like he came back down the bag before he got there he's out yeah it's out full stride right back down on the base they're gonna charge an air to I'm to hire the picture as you said Joe but that should have been out number three but now he's in trouble here's the sleigh again what do you think now he catches the ball watch his foot no doubt he's out right on the bag and the foot is not down yet Staffing has released yet [Applause] I think this is what McNamara wanted when he started Nolan that if Nolan would be throwing out Oh Stu would have led off the inning and been able to use Bernie to pawn gets him up there and it'll end whoa [Applause] that played Tony that is really a lack of communication and no excuse in the world Joe here's the problem that comes about when you have too many guys playing in the middle of that Watts town he thinks that rentals is going to take it himself he turns his back Riddle just keeps going over and Reynolds flips him the ball he's not looking but that is the place in the middle of the diamond where you've got to have perfect communication I guess pitcher and catchers most at one shortstop second base and you don't have the communication if you got a Landeskog play one day and Noel's a deke pound the next day last year was a couple of other guys Morgan was there it makes it tough on the shortstop but wouldn't you have holler and I got it I got it or I'll take it and that's the lack of communication it's an error on the shortstop and unfair charge because he made the right call now they make it they were going to keep trying until they got it right they got it right that time at the end of three innings Cincinnati with a gift run six Houston won three years I've done one thing played tennis mom says if you concentrate on one thing you can be the best it weren't for Kentucky Fried Chicken they just and no one else does a tender and juicy the novel Nehemiah and then they have some funny cars in the NHRA World Drag Race Finals and in the a iaw national women's collegiate Swimming Championships tomorrow on sports world four o'clock Eastern Time nothing prettier than watching an athlete like Renaldo Nehemiah run hurdles left feel a base hit Danny Heep singles to left so he's on it brings up art Howe ready just trying to throw strikes to try to throw strikes is something on he's gone pretty much a fastball after fastball when he has a problem it's the base on ball that gets him in trouble got to keep working those other pitches but the tendency is not to get behind the hitters and to throw strikes and it's easier to throw strike with a fastball there's another one and strike one the old days when you were trailing by five was making throw strikes but it has changed that's what they talk about is gone Tommy go strike two something on it you can see the Astro hitters are looking for fast balls up ready and there still can't catch up to it I was late on that one another one base hit to right field how singles to right he pulls on at second a base runners are at first and second one man out Alan Ashby is it batter Bob Lillis former Dodger like he was a member of one of the original Houston Colts wasn't he weak old 45s before they became the Astros and moved into the dog one out we've got ten hits in this ballgame [Music] six by Cincinnati for by Houston all what - grows with Heep at second base house at first base they've hit the ball hard for any they're taking their cuts I mean they're not leaving the bat and a bat right but they're still late he was laying on that ball of the pits before that ha there's Bobby sprawl a left-hander warming up for the Astros but even how got jammed on a fastball that he upped the opposite way I think not only speed it's the movement on the ball curve ball foul tip one ball in two strikes one out six to one Cincinnati's leading were in a Ford the end of three Montreal one San Francisco nothing Mets for Dodgers one into three Lopes a home run how to play [Applause] when you look at the Cincinnati pitching staff side receiver and bear there's 30s it's a pretty young staff they became like beretti early 20s Soto their chance to be an exceptional picture past story Hume price Moscow late-20s curveball misses doing two on that last shot that you saw there with the grip of the ball that's the thing the pitching coaches look for especially with the young pitches the C's fingers in relation to the seams and how they go into that glove misses three balls and two strikes show you how important that is bryant gumbel dan will boost his pregame show on Ron Davis striking out so many and stand willing the pitching coach said you've been throwing with the seen fast balls most of your career why don't you go cross seem to make the bull ride a little bit and he ran that streak of strikeouts off just by changing his grip a little better here's an another pitch the key are you saw it with it what the scenes honey fastball that would be a thing that if you were coaching you would say to yourself well he went into the glove with the seam and he drew a fastball let's see if he does it the next time and the next time I think after about three pitches if he does that you say hey maybe I'm onto something well I think a lot of interesting discussions that we've seen regarding Fernando Valenzuela we'll talk about it during the game some of the things you've talked about from the mechanics of that screwball we talked about Seaver and Joe Nuxhall and McNamara here's fine mrs. ball one how long will he last is it too much of a strain on his arm Carl Hubbell who invented the school ball and named it thanks that the young left-hander the best that he has seen in 40 years perfect delivery for the screwball two balls no strikes two more from the California Angels for ken Forsch born in South Bend Indiana now lives in Puerto Rico bears the grip across the seams that time I'll tell you what there are two guys in the coaching lines for Houston Don leopard and third and Bob Lowe sit first fare well Leopard at third you see there as a former catcher and there's Lillis they will pick up something like that if a pitcher develops a pattern pictures and pitching coaches are aware when a guy Telegraph's his pitches so it just takes one fetch to grip the ball like the curveball and change when you're going to glove and come in with a fastball that will straighten the hitter up in a hurry two balls in one strike two outs six two one Cincinnati leading fastball foul straight back Nuxhall has another chance in and out [Applause] so Nolan looking up at him and sach Davidson I think knocks you'd better let the sure man have him from here on in let Marty Brennaman take [Applause] fifth inning Montreal one San Francisco nothing left-center field Griffey giving it a chase he makes this is really a much better plate and look like he just outran the ball because predicting pound he was playing toward right field and shallow and flippy shows the speed speed will he race a lot of mistakes he's simply outran that ball so we go to the bottom of the fourth the score here is Cincinnati 6 and used in the 1 we play in our pool while he works on his well he adds chlorinators and algaecides plus shark treatments save time and money with Dutch masters buy from UCLA top-ranked American Steve Scott and Ireland's own alien Cartland go hits ahead of the mile plus ancients wore the NHRA world battles of track racing tomorrow you know now is a kid listening to baseball on radio and he used to always amaze me Tony when the announcer would say why is it that when a fellow makes a great catch he always bats in that inning nice to think there was some big mysterious thing but it always seems to happen here's Griffin you've been listening to Steve Dan's too much a statistician if that happened any more often than doesn't happen come on right strike one [Applause] maybe andujar last inning is scheduled up first in the fifth Griffey is double in scorning water takes it high one ball and one strike burfi a man when he hits the ball in the infant knew it better hurting the ball over to first base because he is stepping toward first base for that right foot right there and he's get a good break out of the box it's the most extreme case that would be a guy like vic davalillo when he played with cleaner than the dodgers i think there were times he was out of the box and that was still there one ball and two strikes now to play count remains at one and two six runs six hits no errors for Cincinnati one run four hits two errors for Houston next Saturday baseball Cincinnati Pittsburgh one of our games [Applause] Kansas City against the Red Sox Royals are struggling as is Boston Kansas City didn't get off to that good a start last year either nor did Brett Whitby is on he's got his second basin of the afternoon brings up Dave concepción as we look at the replay he almost had that ball Tony he's a tough guy to play because he'll hit the ball down the left field second base will usually punch him up the middle of Stein was and then he got a ball inside and : concepción hit into a force play and scored in the first and him single to drive in a run in the second inning [Music] [Applause] Sep CEO has made himself with good hitter you might recall the first couple of years we saw him like you look like this we'll get 200 hit or everybody who's gonna be a great fielder just looked in this record Tony 1970 at 260 71 he at 205 and to 9 and 287 to 81 to 74 [Applause] it might shock his success up to the hitting instructor ted kaczynski miss kazursky thought he would not hit earlier there is Griffey being held by Heep but he gave him a lighter bat Lugo up on the plane little vet said you better hit the right field son you better not try and pull everything today no stumble recovers he's got it now Grif he goes back Cedeno talking to la filler crews now [Applause] we had some problems with that ball as crews heads back to left field I don't think playing a lot on artificial surface that's crews going back Sedalia at centerfield who stumbled like the five gold gloves but playing artificial surfaces not gonna allow that he ankle to heal too quickly here's George Foster hit a big double in that first inning when Cincinnati scored three drove in two runs all fastball they're gonna credit jamming I have her that's all L can say let me call him I'll call him out - pretty good plays one by the shortstop Reynolds you really had to come into the high Optus he backs up on this poem he gets no on then he has to throw across his body to find the guy like goofy running you cut or make a quick play here this from another angle you can see how Thawne sets up left field side of the bag so he couldn't get offended by Griffey bench had a good cut at a fastball one strike there have been people who have gone so far as to say we look at foster that Johnny Bench is washed up I do not believe though Joel that abhi has a healthy ear I think that's when he can he's had a bad knees some back trouble he's got calcium deposit of the right Alba last week he was taking our language in a pulled muscle in his chest but if he is healthy he will contribute and probably get over 100 games under his belt this year two strike pitch Vaughn has there steps on the back for his own ends a fourth inning so the score at the end of four Cincinnati 6 Houston 1 and we'll be right back after these messages from your local station a will from here Rock Hudson is the star neck with Suzanne Pleshette Brenda Vaccaro ahead if you drink beer you've probably tried at least one of these fine imports guaranteed ready grandma Colonial Penn the insurance specialist for people 50 and over troubled waters Monday at 10:00 on Chicago's news center channel 5 troubled waters Monday at 10:00 on Chicago's news center channel 5 6 to 1 Cincinnati leading the houston astros let's see what's happening in Montreal right now Oh God Merle Harmon and Ron Luciano in Montreal where the Montreal Expos are leaving the Giants one to nothing getting the run in the first inning for Steve Rodgers who is in a bit of trouble here right now in the giant half of the fifth with John lemaster who doubled with two down on its second vitae blue the pitcher who walked is on at first Billy North has a three ball two strike count and let's see what he can do runners going base hit down the line will tie the game lemaster will score Timmy Raines running the ball down by the blue being waved home and he is gonna make it in it's two to one San Francisco so by the blue scores Billy North and Steve Rogers has lost the one to nothing lead it's now two to one San Francisco and here it is said it was they pitched before that cost him the two runs because he should have gone three and two it was right down the line you can see it it went by the third baseman there Tim Wallach and it ended up a double but the pitch before that was the important pitch he should have never gone to three and two so the Giants grab the lead after being shut out over the first four innings Timmy Raines the super speedster for Montreal got the run for the Expos in the first inning with a single stole second moved to third on a pass ball and scored on a Gary Carter groundout that's been them Expos offense today right now eNOS Cavell the first baseman of the Giants with a strikeout and a single dissenter so San Francisco is on top 2 to 1 knocked off the glove by Scott and here is they are trying to score [Applause] at the plate blocked off Anita's kaval we're going to face it out of it but though RBI because North is shot down and here it is Rodney Scott makes a nice play on this gets back good throw to Carla Carla hose onto the ball and North tried to upset him look at North he knows what he do what to do all the way had a chance at it and it had to be a good throw and it was a nice bounce off the carpet and Karthik stayed in there got him out saw a pair of runs on three base hits the Giants take the leaves and at the end of four the happenings in San Francisco it's the Giants - in the Expos one [Music] Joe Gargiulo Tony Kubik back in Cincinnati there is your score red six Astros one we're in the fifth Andujar was the scheduled hitter for the Astros he was pinch-hit for by Joe Pittman he walked on four straight pitches the count now on Poole is three and one so Moretti the youngster for Cincinnati had thrown seven consecutive balls now he runs the count to three in line while far bready walks two in a row and it will bring up break rebels the shortstop [Applause] Reynolds has sacrificed and flied to Center fail and I've come John McNamara will try to speed what we were talking about where he was throwing strikes throwing strikes and he lost the rhythm well we talked about it and we also were talking with John McNamara before the game and usually sends out his pitching coach unless he specifically sees something as an old catcher and he very definitely saw something because with that close-up you saw McNamara he's a low-key kind of guy but a very forceful kind of a guy and whatever he saw he told mr. Bharani in no uncertain terms while back Tamara says of Brittany there is Paul Moscow warming up for Cincinnati McNamara's said that beretti is too easygoing and maybe try to jab them a little bit take charge a little more but there are two men on base for Houston Reds lead six to one he misses away one at all so three consecutive hitters that Moretti is behind this time its Reynolds his aiming the ball is what he's doing this is trying to aim it back Tamara one ball and one strike read Johnny's lips say come on throw the ball one ball one strike juvenile there are many times a pitcher gets a lead like that Tony to the guy it becomes a whole picture I hope I get it over I hope he hits it I hope somebody catches it and you want him to quit hope and throw it so the inexperience of beretti is showing at this point growl ball should be too austere conceptuality love through the sickly when he needed it [Applause] the pitchers best friend and he gets it right here and the picture to watch is when OSHA gives the ball to concepción watch him just leap over him and he's already got the ball on its way to first and then oysters show him the ball he took that ball out of the glove watches right here moving towards concepción for better control to get a little more on it and gives it to him about chest high so now with a man on third and two outs it says oursa Dania who has hit Cincinnati pitching well during his lifetime has 31 home runs both listen file almost in the dugout sedan yo lifetime versus Cincinnati 3 29 31 home runs 107 RBIs he has won today just broke his bat he's kind of sad because it was a favorite with the bat strike it hurts a lot of tape on that bat you can have taped pine tower what is it up to 18 inches from the knob of the bat I think is what the rule says get it any higher and consider doctoring the bat I see our friend bill Kunkel has come up with a new wrinkle for umpires - you remember he had the tape measure in the World Series Kalibak for any Bob so the runner will come home hit them from third base so Daniel caused it so Daniel backed out in the box and he stopped I think he broke his hands while his foot was still on the rubber Joe already did instead of stepping off the rubber first and then breaking then one right there that's where he stops he backs out he's the Daniel backing out he just stopped you can see Cedeno can request time from the up part well I'll tell you what's at Stevenson never missed a beat he was really on the ball on that play see Daniel stepped out he may have requested time from the home plate umpire Seth Davison but didn't get it Bernie saw him step out stopped his delivery so now the score has read six Astros two on the ball by beretti two strikes Daniel flips it high but I'll destroy that fan so Ferretti cogs old problems two oxen a ball all the sound out of the Edit we go to the bottom of the fifth year in Cincinnati with a score the red six but off the field I want to feel nice and dry and I want to smell nice that's why I use speed sticks super dry antiperspirant it's the wide stick effective protection with more dryness to help fight wetness and it goes on dry so you can get dressed right away so get on the stick the wide stick speed sticks super dry antiperspirant live Bennett you could buy all these copiers and still not get everything that's in the small new Savin 840 that's why you'll find it in blue chip companies and chocolate chip companies the 70/40 goes into insurance agencies and secret agencies the seven eight forty gives you fibre optics a reduces friction better than any of those oils so start saving gas use our coal graphite because it's a foam not friction look for our coal graphite it's dollar eighty refund offer there's your scarred Cincinnati red six Astros to a new pitcher has come on for Houston Bobby sprout but there's some action in the Montreal game and we're gonna take you there [Applause] he had stolen 26 bases in 24 games coming into this one 26 out of 28 attempts and what did he do in the first inning he singled stole second moved to third on a pass Paul scored on a groundout that's the only run right now for the Expos but he's got a chance to give him the lead or at least tie it up Jerry white is a runner at third base ball one the last thing that a pitcher wants to do is walk Tim Raines they have put clocks on him his first base coach Steve Boros plucks the pitcher is delivery time to the plate if brains get support it's like an extra-base hit low ball two it's two to one San Francisco is the Giants grab the lead in the top of the fifth on a two-run double what Billy North and a pitchers do between by tableau of the Giants and Steve Rogers of the Montreal Expos two balls no strikes strike one I'll tell you what watch quite a third everybody's pulling Tim see so exciting to this hold match this whole game he does things that they found was really quiet till he came up now they're pumping and every heartbeat is on that pitch right there and it's two and two and blue is back out whoo he was in a hole too and all and now it's two and two Timmy reigns last night stole four bases against the Giants they were down by a score of four to one he stole second he stole third they gave him a standing ovation before the night was over he at four steals in four attempts [Applause] and if he keeps going the way he is going now he'll break every record in the book Lou Brock all of them wills everything outside all prospective we're in the bottom of the fifth inning in Montreal the Giants leading to the one look at the concentration on blue he doesn't want to lose this guy but he did [Applause] wanted that pitch he wanted it he thought it was on the corner Jerry de l'Europe I said no it's outside ball and blue is really hot here it is is it outsider isn't it - folks - uh-huh Gary Dale you call it a ball you saw by to jump out comes Robyn said he's going to call biting down and also go over what they're gonna do in case ranks goes to second he had just let him go into second he had cut him off he's asking to milk me right now do you think it was a strike folks as I don't know it was close Steve Boros has a clock in his right hand see it I hope you can see it maybe you can't right now but he carries a little stopwatch in the right hand is probably tucked behind the belt right now every pitch that the pitcher throws for speed now they've got this thing but you're not scientifically on how long it takes the picture to make his move to the plate how long it takes the catcher to throw to second and Timmy Raines can go from first to second at 3.2 and charlie metro the doctor Scott who is here says there is nobody if brains gets a proper break there's no picture or catchers going to throw this they're not gonna keep this guy from stealing suckered they just can't do it he said the fastest combination he ever Charlie ever clock was Munson and Fritz Peterson and they were clocked at 3-3 so therefore greens could even beat them all right the decision has been made about the runner at first by two blue with a two to one lead as two down will face Scott brought me a switch-hitter has walked and grounded up ball one now they know right now whether or not they're gonna throw through whether or not they're going to take a chance I'm throwing through it and try to get Tim at second well whether or not it's just a half throw and vital cut it off try to catch white going back to third or whether there's no throw it all runner dorrigo it's a throw to third that's what Tim Raines does to the opposition the Giants put a play on and may almost sue them all away and that would have scored to run you hit it right on ahead morrow exactly they just watch everybody shook up on this he knows he's throwing a third he comes up over the right hit right-handed batter and wife was out back with ease sir he is he's back there with plenty of time to spare and it was a nice play by Darrell Evans to stop that ball and Tim could have scored from first as fast as he is so it's a ball and a strike Giants lead 2 to 1 Scott 1 1 pitch strike two reigns with two stolen bases today has 28 for the season 28 and 25 games as being the 25th game he's only 21 years old a little bit loan away ball two and strike to it I think bita wanted that one also Riteish press and he wants everything right now Rodney Scott hitting but 179 coming into the ballgame but he is a fixture here he's part of the go-go front end of that lineup Joe Morgan the old pro and the inning is over so find a blue gets out of it giving up a double and a walk and a stolen base but no more at the end of five it's the San Francisco Giants two of the Montreal Expos one joe gergiolla Tony Kubek there's your score in the bottom of the fifth red six Astros two but Cincinnati is threatening they have runners on first and third with one out beretti is the pitcher here's out happens Nolan on a two ball one strike pitch crowds this ball to deke thought it was not in time he was odd go over the first base night is the runner at first pace Nolan is at third after Nolan's and Phil hit night drilled this ball and hit the third base bag was on first and second right now already NASA Daniel Dole is going to try and score he doubts over any and the sacrifice fly the center field no time it back already really fought Bobby strong the relief pitcher off the couple three and two there's night at first base so the score is red seven Astros to with two outs in the bottom of the fifth Sproul at one time a product of the Boston Red Sox [Music] he'll for five Watson watching of course now is with the Yankees [Music] so it's Dave Collins watch struck out and grounded out tada chopper Rennels goes to heat they retire the side but the retz come up with another on a couple of hits infield hits the guard of the six here in Cincinnati the Cincinnati Reds 7210 tough mean beers versus one Bic shaver can one pick shades of all my beers gonna send this big to the showers that big is gonna beg for mercy it's amazing it looks like one big shaver is gonna shave these 10 tough beards looks like big wins I got a great shave also no wait let me see the replay yes one big shave these 10 tough beards how many shaves can you get there's this argument football about who's smarter the offense or defense defense had to be smarter to react to flip-flops and flea flickers then we drink the best tasting beer Light beer from Miller we drink light - it's got 1/3 less calories than the regular beer and it's less filling and we had to be smarter to react to the red dog she closes ok Billy the flanker does it down and out the weak side linebacker business what's the nose guard do huh I don't defense risk wanted in a beer unless now the time to get that jump and save on truck prices special cash incentives - for dealers can save you hundreds on standard size pickups like the f-150 that broke the EPA gas mileage barrier for six cylinder pickups that carry 2,500 pounds and you can save on port stuff for by for pickup it's the only American built 4x4 with independent front suspension get a deal now that can save you hundreds because of Ford's cash incentives to Ford dealers next Saturday on our game of the week the Reds against the Pittsburgh Pirates some of you will see George Brett defending American League champion Kansas City Royals against the Red Sox Red Sox with two home runs of the ballgame the day they lead 9 to 2 rice has a home run and Evans check your local listings for the game of the area that's next Saturday 2:00 Eastern Daylight Time here at NBC sport don't forget to tune in at 2:00 for Bryant Gumbel show where I'm certain he will touch once again as that strike deadline of May 29 midnight it's one week closer and a lot of controversy at least they're starting to talk a little bit Cruz one ball one strike I'm almost gonna retract Tony I've been very optimistic that there would not be a strike if I had to vote today I would say there wouldn't be a strike Bharani one ball one strike who's Paulus how to play well it's interesting to me and I'm sure it's got to be disappointing to Bud Selig the principal owner in the Brewers and Harry Dalton I mean too many class guys you know really a pretty class organization to say the least have a fifty thousand dollar fine slapped on the organization and Dalton for a reasonable statement Bernie's glove poster almost draws feds off the bag he did--he the group off the bag our crews with his speed just beat it out they said scorn abased sets of cruises on poster just pull him off the bag in it ball players have never changed in my day-to-day before me even today they can have a bad leg but as soon as there's a base hit inside it's like they made a side trip to Lourdes and there's a miracle I know it's Danny Heep or the runner on first base and the Astros trailing by five now why would that be a hit where if he makes a good throw runners out obviously pick up in there and those two Padron bench off the bag you're gonna give an infielder an error and he's a former shortstop - yeah one ball no strikes to heat my drive concept's yo gets a piece of it but not enough so the Astros have something going with nobody out they have to Lanai Astros have been hitting the ball hard now they had a chance last and in a double play took him out of it when granny got behind they've got the first two runners on here I'll tell you a couple base hits a bloop now watch this this ball is hit hard concepción thought he had a chance to Magda play it Nick it a little bit but it's a base hit that should kind of play right there that Robin the out hurt his leg on the bruise having so much trouble with injuries Molitor out his Brian young came down and jabbed his knee and was going for an examination this morning to see how serious it was so nobody out to man i art ha takes ball one from already and that bullpen starts again for Cincinnati that's the kind of Paul at Frank Howard hit the G jump Florida it almost hit man on the way back and a work with the curtains up waiting for landed about 450 feet away [Applause] one ball one strike with a breaking ball there is Paul Moscow he was up last inning throwing for Cincinnati now with that face it in the fourth house at nine straight games almost 500 over that stretch tried to go to right field he fouls it off one ball two strikes crews at second keeps it first for the Astros no outs [Applause] Bruce Moretti [Applause] he really jammed them it's going to be infield fly yes it what's called second and third base umpires raise the arm Vanna was automatically out there Zed Margaret third place [Applause] on occasion we explain the infield fly rule where the runners on first and second or first second and third with less than two out in the judgment of the umpire and feeling and coming out fielder catches the ball on the edge of the infield batter's out but if the ball drop the runners can run at their own risk you can't advance so there's one out two benign Ashby the hitter foul out of play the Astros with two runs six sets that committed two errors the read seven runs nine hits and no errors - be one of those guys who had sieve-like on odd-numbered years he began switching in and hitting again at Toronto he switched it one year what just to right-handed one year he's back to switching he the shadow pinky switch it most of last year to right at the end one ball one strike one out pretty good speed on the bases for our Houston cruise and heap that's sacred to one I think this game is pretty typical as we look at the baserunners crews at second and heat but first it's used in ball clip they get the base from this but they need two base hits a hurricane the foul ball about what they just have trouble scoring runs while their pitching has carried them on this road trip where they've won a lot of ballgames because their hitters have scored a little over three runs per ballgame fouled out of play count those two two on Ashby they need that one big guy to come in one swing of the bat as we look at Cincinnati they're leading by five one swing of the bat puts you right in the ballgame that's 7 to 2 but you know it's it's knits and that's time that deserves the man Bill Virdon manager of the year last year well he had to do a lot of juggling he was lineups foul ball could be to concepción poster so beretti throws the sinker when he needs it to pitch out of the nine this is a test track and a test of a remarkable machine it uses a fuel-efficient Honda four-stroke engine and automatic decompression for easy starts it has a unique oil pump that improves lubrication and many other advanced features [Music] the Honda rotary mower think of it a lawn mower engineered by Honda now there's a place where they have their own authorized mechanics quality parts and service and prices you can afford now there's cake air found only at Kmart when you can get a brake job both front disc and rear drum for less than some places charge just four discs that's a value well that's what the cake air brake special is all about for only 6388 we'll do a front and rear brake job using Raybestos manhattan quality parts at that price why do it yourself that's cake air only at Kmart I'm Debra Hensley State Farm agent in Lexington Kentucky speaking for thousands of State Farm agents throughout the country you know State Farm has a great reputation for its homeowners insurance people come back dust year after year after year and they come back this because I know they've got a great product at a good price and great service [Music] that's homeowners insurance the State Farm way we're back in Cincinnati let's take a look at the Western Division standings with the Dodgers on this strengthen Fernando Valenzuela zarm and Burt Hooten then kenny land roll acquired center field is off to a hot start they were searching for that center fielder los angeles started porting last year houston got on the blocks in a hurry a little bit of a change this year you'll wonder with Houston with the injuries to the mid under speed and losing some players even with such a great pitching staff they got back Tony Turk 12 and 15 and on his last this road trip the last 10 games are seven and three and just to reiterate what you said about the pitching I think the big difference here is that just can't score runs the grub worms don't sleep when these guys bet they're hitting a lot of ground balls ken griffey concepción foster against Bobby sprout relieved walking on two heart one ball one strike he pulled up briefly way out in front lots of fly ball the center Sylvania hasn't now and I've really got to believe Joel that part of that is what we talked about earlier you mentioned the big bat they'd like to have a pool in their lineup get a whole brother with a ball game and get out ahead in a hurry but they were able last year to do it with that face stealing speed and forcing mistakes and that is gone not completely gone some say it was a controversial deal when Morgan left the bali were both popular players and team leaders that the leadership Morgan it was so important it's gonna hurt this ball club your burden doesn't believe he's not the leader here in his quiet way there weren't that many stolen bases between Cobell and Morgan and it's got to be an attitude thing a philosophy kind of thing are they running more I mean that first run they scored is a typical Houston run a double by fuel a sacrifice and in the ground ball and you got one run in two balls no strikes to concepción he is scarred around driven homer on mal right on the Left Bill Virdon in the center two balls in the strike we're in the sex there's George Foster it was a double and a couple of RBIs and later scored two operative rentals two outs let me ask you something about that leadership thing who do you think is the leader on the Dodgers now with that big lead I'll tell you what there's only one leader on any team as far as I'm concerned with some managers right now they can talk about leadership on the field and having a veteran out that helped up and it helps to a degree but if the man who's got the MGR side of this door can't control his players this coaches I don't care who you got on the field that's right not going to work better have those horses that can play you give me players and you can have leaders leaders are good for the band two outs George Foster Reds lead some of the two one ball from strong and you never hear a young player say he's a leader it's always the guy just hanging on it gives you those intangibles that's what made me a broadcast right and manageable George Foster look at the home runs and RBIs that he is healthy that's Lynette that's leading he's leader last yeah and last year they say at a point he was hurt off and on all year he had 25 home runs 90 plus RBIs that's an off year because he was injured this year is healthy and they say he will act on his healthy look out they sent right field by Foster about the Reds now had a hit in each of the six innings of this ballgame [Applause] buster Kiefer's for the ballgame it'll bring up fetch [Applause] yeah tommy lasorda we both admire as a leader because Valenzuela had come out of noir exactly because he pitched 18 scoreless innings at the end of last year but he has become a starter look what he's done five shutouts so who didn't decide from that make a good leader in a hurry now I think the catcher a guy like bench behind the plate with young pitching can given an added influence [Applause] Yogi Berra [Music] all-time home run list [Applause] Johnny fans get into standing ovations there was some controversy as to how often Johnny Bench would play we asked dick Wagner the general manager the Cincinnati ballclub about this [Applause] well yes I don't think there's a controversy as such John asked to catch two days a week last August and we agreed to that he wanted to play X number of games another position we couldn't agree to that and tie John McNamara's hands and I think this far it's been all right we had an injury to Danny Driessen and John's had a chance to play at first base there for games and I've felt all along that this will work itself out but the only person that can really answer the whole thing is John bench Wow Jilla Nolan grounded out as the president was talking as far as now reps nine Astros to us we saw Johnny back from the two run home run hi yogi berra the all time something on Disney a bundling and some and some wacky crook sets a leave the both necks then on chips a mysterious accident leads ponch and Jon to a close encounter on NBC the Florida Keys and Milwaukee are a whole country apart but to these guys they both mean something great the keys mean stone crab big and fresh and Milwaukee beer cold crisp Oh Milwaukee beer and man you can't one without the other think of beer [Music] you know what doesn't get any better than this hey you take my picture here use my Panasonic video camera and portable VHS recorder it's easy all the controls can be attached to the camera so you can take pictures smile and with Panasonic you get instant replay right through the cameras so you know you've got the shot take my picture I got it I got it get the fun of outdoors indoors with Panasonic omniVision regi vision personal computers Saturday at 6 on cue here's the swing in a homerun that Ty's Johnny Bench with Yogi Bear for 29th on the all-time home run list at 358 he stayed right with them a home run for Johnny Bench it was kind of interesting listening to dick whack they're talking about bench and the bench situation when he said he wanted to play other positions but we couldn't agree to that to tie John McNamara's hands concepción one hand going to be closed pulls him off the bag he's safe [Applause] so let's see how they rule like vi under ease how many the most plays have we seen so far today pulling first baseman off the bag it's about the fourth and fifth time and might add here's Houston again with baserunners on granny doesn't know if he's pitching with two in fields he's had so many base runners on with the score nine to two cincinnati out in front dave roberts come out of the Houston dugout looks like he's going to be the pinch-hitter here for sprawl he's the man who has been somewhat of utility for most of his career can catch play first place third that he played shortstop in a pinch major leagues got a nice contract strengthen his versatility [Music] [Applause] Namie a player hasn't gotten a nice Fernando Valenzuela making about $50,000 people are rolling in the turnstile too soon I think he's gonna raise next year here's a bouncy ball at concepción one two double play pitchers best friend she picked a song coming in the bag very hard and slide but not in time let's say one thing Bernie is still the singer when he's hatching he's gotten the ground ball shows a sign that he is a dirty sound headed guy knows a little bit about pitching and keeping the ball down I'm afeared about white guys come in a little bit harder in the second base than they used to not an official surface a lot of infielders where the rubber cleats are the days of spikes I wouldn't do that they're pretty getting their hands stepped down their head step down so a little blood with the spikes white knowledge is no bruised that was a third DoublePlay turned over by the Cincinnati infield [Music] very few is on second Aaron is cine [Applause] daddy no reason not to catch it he just missed it handcuffed oh goodness ball rolling hit him on the heel of the glove hit him on a hand Larry started trainers coming out you can see him shaking it right there he may have jammed it John McNamara coming out of the dugout along with Larry Starr I believe after it hit the heel of his glove it may have popped up him on this thumb and jamming Larry star the trainer of marathon runner [Applause] [Music] you know the glove and then I believe it hit it the thumb on his throwing hand which is where the problem was going in there's a final score Boston's him in Toronto three Stanley the winner clancy Busa moves their home bronze rice in the heavens and you'll be seeing Boston in Kansas City in one of our games next week those Red Sox with 13 base hits believe the nothing Minnesota nothing at the end of 7 Milwaukee's it open the later start Kansas City as Chicago Baltimore Texas Detroit and California Yankees at Seattle all tonight and we've been keeping up to date on that Montreal San Francisco game it's two Giants to in Montreal one in the end of six Mets 4 Dodgers 2 & 6 everybody else tonight so pool is on it first here is Craig Reynolds Astros have had the runners line drive right field well hit base hit who heads for third he's thinking hard going to second his rentals and safe I'll tell you what that was close to the stake by rentals when you're down down by seven rounds you're not gonna take a whole lot of chances ball handcuffs they started him to try to make the shoestring catch but the ball kept sinking luckily he got a piece of it with his shoulder rattles takes a chance gets away with it Jerry Crawford the umpire at second base waiting until the play was completed here it is Sedalia once again Houston they started this inning bond was safe on an air Roberts hit into a double play now they have base runners at second and third so Daniel with a chance to knock in a few it's 9 to 2 Cincinnati out in front we're in the seventh inning our 7th inning stretch is coming up bill Terry [Music] science Jacksonville floor one strike the count on Cedeno one ball and one strike rules at third brenell's is its second Wow tip one ball two strikes watch for any pitch now you took a little bit off the breaking ball he's basically a power pitcher but JA I got a believe when he gets a little more finessing and throwing that third pitch over the plate whether it's a straight change or changeup on his break he's gonna be exceptional pitcher he's kept the fastball down with movements got a hard slider goes for the strikeout and he gets it his very strikeout of the ball game that ends the seventh inning we go to the bottom half of the seventh and his score here since 99 Houston - here's another installment of our seventh-inning stretch Old Spice [Applause] the seventh-inning stretch brought to you by Old Spice stick theorem the deodorant that works all the time military was never a flashy player he performed instead with a gutsy workaday brilliance as first baseman of the New York Giants bill had an astounding season in 1930 wrapping a league record 254 base hits batting 401 and being acclaimed MVP bill was always strong-willed and he often battled publicly with manager John McGraw but when McGraw retired bill became player manager and he drove the Giants to pennants in 1933 and 36 a knee injury forced bill out of the lineup when he was 35 but he still managed the Giants into another World Series whether he played or whether he managed Bill Terry offered no false hustle no excuses and no compromising Ed's been working overtime practicing you serve the needs of the owner that works overtime my boss is working overtime on a big presentation only Old Spice dick deodorant gives you both 24-hour protection from odor plus that famous Old Spice int good thing my Old Spice stick works overtime to Old Spice stick the deodorant that works overtime you're looking at the new second baseman for the Astros Rafael lambda start and the new pitcher is Franklin Courtney such Davison motion enough how they're banning well also Dickie thon has moved from second base to shortstop Reynolds is out of the game so the number two hitter I believe will be the pitcher so he can stay in the ball game a little longer great night hits the first pitch to straightaway center field and there's one away so scratch Lowell Reynolds from your lineup it's we're keeping score booth found a short but Lattisaw at second and liccardi is your pitcher that's Davidson going through all kinds of gyrations motion after the press box I referred to it earlier Tony just to complete a thought about our friend Bill cockily American league umpire who pulled a ruler during the World Series that notice he has a new one now a knife he carries a knife and there is a strike and the reason for that is to check the bats to see if there's any Cork in them that's how Kerwin Conkel got into a rhubarb so the job of the umpire ever increasingly tougher little showmanship or Cutlass partez last year the world certainly ripped out the tape measure I don't behind me come on fall in one strike you didn't get a commercial out of it two balls at one strike [Applause] Aires sach Davidson behind a play outside liqueur t30 balls one strike one out score Cincinnati nine Houston to there's no I quit has some fireworks in our game next week Cincinnati and Pittsburgh should be a lot of scoring but Fenway Park they're always scoring up there'll be Kansas City in the Red Sox though you check your local listings for the game in your area left field crews drifting back should make the play kind of miss Jets it for a moment there you talk about what's happening the National League with Valenzuela and the kid Raines that we've seen when he switched up there to have it around Oceania here's Cruz going back he's playing shallow roaster we almost forget Pete Rose starting the league behind rays and Collins and he's getting closer all the time after his fast start to that Musial record four hits for a national leaguer Cobb leads it then Henry Aaron is second Rose is hitting 364 Matlock 350 and Easler 348 so we're gonna have plenty of hitting next week [Applause] 9 to 2 the score bottom of the seventh [Applause] Franklin Cordy in relief Andujar started for Houston Bharani the batter still enough for symptomatic [Applause] near the stands how they have room he will makes the play so that ends the inning we complete seven innings of baseball here the score Cincinnati 9 Houston 2 [Music] how do you get performance on the road BMW and Arriva Datsun and Abreva Austin areevo Saab under even now import owners can get an all-season radio from Goodyear steel belted or Reaper radios and P metric sizes for almost every car on the road even its footprint tells you it's different how did you get the performance you with a showstopper like Arriba Arriba what a name Arriba homey from Goodyear hey who do you take traveling MasterCard and me who do you take shopping MasterCard who do you take to dinner MasterCard [Music] [Music] it's happening right now when ramada ends all over the USA we're changing right before your eyes at Ramada we're creating comfortable new places to sleep in we're building bright new places to eat in we're making Ramada Inns better and better Rob bada we're changing right before your eyes for instant confirmed reservations at any Ramada call toll-free 800 two two eight two eight two eight UCLA becomes the battleground for the high hurdles as Ronaldo de Maya and rivals Greg foster square off then rubber burns and engines roar in the NHRA World Finals of drag racing plus the a iaw women's collegiate Swimming Championships tomorrow the Cincinnati fans I think they're happy they're looking for the camera they lead by seven nine to two z-scores Cruz hits the first pitch and pops it up and Ray Knight says out taken except CEO says no I'll take it laughing about it and I'm sure you'll walk overnight and say hey McNamara wants to try to take it [Applause] sports world tomorrow track-and-field UCLA track and field I'll be live will see Ronaldo Nehemiah Ian Coghlan Stanley boy James Sam for that ought to be a pretty good show down to 100 meters outside ball one and they'll be the funny cars they'll be blasting down the strip the NHRA world drag race finals then we got the AIA w national women's collegiate swimming championship four o'clock Eastern Time tomorrow sports world I was thinking of the sneaky shortstop conception when he took control and waived night off I thought it's a great story but that sneaky catcher was in Arizona yeah funny story high school catch it with a runner in third base and a potato and pitch it through the ball and the guy who had the potato - for the third baseman's head runner tried to score he tagged him out left fielder got the potato aided try to destroy the evidence [Applause] you gotta like that kind of in that San Francisco giant Montreal game Philly North has just hit a grand slam home run and the Giants are leading six to one over the Montreal Expos as we look at art Howe top for a team like Houston to come back from deficit this big late in the ball game because they don't have they don't put the beginnings together you know what's been disheartening they've had baserunners on but every time they put them on double plays double playing a fifth double playing a six two double play in the seventh even will the double plays in left seven on base - be on deck two balls and no strikes three balls and no strikes it has not been the kind of a game that you would tape and play back for the little leaguers and say here's how you play the game strike while that Alfonse Gaston around second base who's going to cover Moretti has made the pitch what he's after they'll have gotten the DoublePlay ball you got to give him credit he's had the sinker down with his hat to Ray Knight big hop the eighth inning it is Collins Griffin concepción score nine to Cincinnati over Houston Heinrich Jacob Technical University of Graz jsoc EOKA Airport engineers around the world created a world guard ward escort with better gas mileage ratings and Volkswagen Rabbit Honda Accord Toyota Corolla hatchback with front-wheel drive fraction and four-wheel independent suspension and now Ford Escort is outselling every imported car line in America Ford Escort built to take on the world and do it I get all kinds in here some like it straight some what a twist but they all want the best disposable razor if they like it straight it's true it's good news razor the twin blade classic if they like it with a twist it's too much swivel raise it twin blades plus a moving head that hugs your face both shave better than any single blade disposable good news or swivel gillette puts two great shaves at your disposal so what'll it be straight with a twist [Music] [Applause] [Music] the preceding message was furnished by major league baseball a preceding message was furnished by Major League Baseball Joker's Jolla with Tony Kubek here at Riverfront Stadium where the Cincinnati Reds go into the bottom half of the eighth leading by seven nine two two z-score Dave Collins leads it off he scored a run in the first inning after he walked strike one walked in the first struck out in the second hit no force play in the third bounced out in the fifth liqueur tea in relief Houston bullpen get him busy [Applause] play Los Angeles for and that's for there's joe sambito loosening up for Houston gulps had a homerun Guerrero hit one in the 4th and Guerrero hit one in the 8th sambito the late inning stopper for this ball club but the starting pitching from yesterday and today has been going so well for Houston I got to believe that Burton wants to give some of these guys all a little work to prevent her from getting rusty one ball two strikes two balls and two strikes Billy North the grand slam scored four in the seventh so at San Francisco 6 in Montreal one in the bottom of the seventh Cleveland picked up a running the ain't they leave Minnesota won nothing and the Red Sox defeated Toronto timber 3 tell you without a whole lot of fanfare those Cleveland Indians they're leading the American League East 11 and 7 will are tied actually with the Yankees but in percentage they're leading 6 11 is the percentage clip that they're playing huh outside look guys like Hargrove and Harrow who can get on base and Andrade Thornton's back this year driving some runs for you Dave Garcia's done a good job off the handle shallow left field but Cruz is there and Collins is out one out unlike Dave Garcia's comments when during the offseason with her Caravan somebody asked him know they're gonna finish and how many games are there win we're gonna win 172 what oh yeah all these agents you listen to them he said I got 5 20 game winners he said I added it all up we got a hundred seventy two wins in our belt before the season starts he is loose and he's got a loose team and they're playing well Griffey ball one I went to a banquet in Youngstown Ohio Dave was there he's funny on a banquet circuit st. Louis Man two balls no strikes great family of soccer players like I kid him about his name on the great stars in st. Louis at that time the guy named art Garcia Dave goes by Garcia three balls no strikes Bill Virdon if he doesn't get pitching he knows his team is in trouble we had that pitching it you can turn it around and say bench and foster if he got the hit and there's Foster Griffey draws the base on balls sepcial will be the batter [Applause] concepción scored in the first inning drove in a run with a single in the second flied to Center and bounced out struck the cart [Applause] there is low ball one there's a strike curveball liccardi havens and up and one call in one strike 9 to to Cincinnati out in front ball back on ball 2 strikes one man out [Applause] way outside two balls and two strikes crowd just kind of sit in the back [Applause] a white towel by seven maybe they won't no they're not much laughing and telling jokes when you trail them by seven down leopard sitting there just a moment ago and leopards son Steve a second baseman of the Reds organization two pretty good start twos up over three hundred to talk to Don I was about a week or so ago three balls and two strikes one out will griffey be running you would have to say yes even though they have that big lead stay away from DoublePlay he's holding this time and down the right-field line it [Music] [Applause] you think that's one of those situations where a guy like McNamara who has seen days like this shows a little respect for Berg by not starting and runner up by seven runs I'm not so sure of course he's got a little bit of an injury to his knee also griffey may just be protecting him concepción broke his bat nope just once the pine tar got that extra knob we pointed out before which is a guideline sit down below they're working on it right now at his help spinners I know Bobby Doerr the hitting instructor for the Toronto Blue Jays and Alfredo Griffin do that and he hit the ball a little bit more firmly in spring training in an excellent spray walk thee second walk in the Indian given up by the carnies that puts base runners at first second and here's George Foster Foster it a double in the first inning driving to flied to left into a force play and and single and scored in the sixth [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] George Foster I've home runs 18 RBIs doesn't get it strike one [Applause] powerful man right to move caught the outside corner Griffey at second concepción it first three pitches he got him how do you figure that walks Griffey walks concepción and on clean pitches strikes out foster here's Johnny Bench he should get a good hand [Applause] [Music] a two-run homer his last time up we had a single in the first inning so he's 2 for 4 and home run 29th in the all-time list and there was right at the shortstop Dickey thon that ends the eighth inning we completed in his a baseball here in the score Cincinnati 9 Houston to do you think you've got lawn weeds well join the club there you are clover plantain dandelion you name it all the major ones at ortho we grow to learn how to kill them we'd begun does the job it kills these weeds roots and all you'll never meet all these weeds in your lawn and you'll be ready for the ones you do our concern for lawns is always growing [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] lean trim delicious roast beef with some of the best toppings in the USA you know one of the best things about coming to America was that I got to try American beers and I'd try them all a one-hour like this like beer familiar it's got 1/3 less calories in the regular beer that's less filling and it really tastes great that's why I tell my friends from Mexico when you come to America drinks like beer but don't drink the water like beer familiar everything you always wanted in a beer unless Nick Saturday the National League's leading slugger date Cullens marks the Cincinnati Reds against the Pittsburgh Pirates Plus George Brett on the KC Royals take on the Boston Red Sox Joe carries yellow with Tony Cook back here Riverfront Stadium we go to the top of the ninth inning Alan Ashby leads it off Reds 9 Astros 2 we have to pick player of the game our star of the game here first pitches inside we've got a with a split vote coming up well I'm looking at beretti even though he has had some rough anything he's thrown the DoublePlay ball what he's needed it face it another base runner so I made change if he doesn't finish the ball game my choice is Foster because after Collins well Collins walked and Griffey walked in a force play forced to hit the double that gave the Cincinnati Club the lead we got another run scored in a single in the six so my vote is for the star 2 game is George Foster Tony is BER any saw our statistician mr. Steve dance will have to be the tiebreaker and he qualifies it as we look at Dickie thon now I might change if Peretti does not finish this ballgame well with all the authority of a definite maybe our statistician says BER any depending on the ninth inning [Applause] two balls and no strikes it has not been a classic pitching job by Bharani but he's hung in there and he's gotten a double playing he threw the pitch that forced a ground ball outside three and old Johnny Bench walking in just saying get the ball over you got seven my lead Cincinnati bullpen strong again Moscow is up earlier a couple of times now is Hume the right-hander and priced the left-hander Joel price and Tom you three in one nobody out he walked in baserunners again beretti is two wins one loss on this season he's had one complete ball game [Applause] bill bill Fisher looking down he wants to know if humans ready motion to him no one was out talking to try to buy some time and reni there you see Hume the right-hander price the left-hander and Bharani now pitching against land estoy he's about one hitter away from being taken out of the game Ronnie's complete game came against San Diego too it's shut out there's a strike [Applause] Bernie's throwing a lot of pictures a big guy but this many pitches will take its toll on you two strikes just kind of glancing and this certainly unofficial with so much going on they've been about 14 or 15 baserunners for the Houston Astros I know every time Donnie's left around he's pushed off the stretch but the main thing is he's kept them from crossing home plate man destoyed takes it low one ball two strikes Ashby's at second base [Applause] to keep on is at first base Wow the thing about beretta Jill I think that it does help a little bit even though he's basically a power pitcher at least while he's wild law and you've got a chance that's been on base because you get a hitter up there if the balls sinking down low in the strike zone [Music] he does hit the ball gonna hit it on the ground in most cases if there is an advantage to be wild low that maybe it misses two balls and two strikes top of the ninth inning Cincinnati 9 Houston 2 Astros who baserunners on again [Applause] [Music] I'm called this is a kind of a ballgame for the losing manager that when he goes to bed tonight he doesn't count sheet becomes men left on base in Arras Verdun that's out of play [Applause] man it's Pittsburgh the general manager then Joe Brown when he brought Bergdorf back said it's the toughest decision week the city had ever had to make because he at the fire bill and he did a good job with the egg he's also Billy Martin became available and George Steinbrenner one of them was always on the hot seat if me and he doesn't win a quiet strong way he is quiet but there are times when well which Hoeppner spoke up one time Pittsburgh and Bill took off his glasses and said you want to fight let's fight again the respect of the few players well he doesn't lack for emotion low ball is like putt granting the bike you know they say doesn't have any emotion I think I'd like they have but grin on my side while Austin very quietly three enthused account here lambda star nobody out left center field George Foster says I'll take it and a real rarity a two-handed catch herd up another batch chatter here all the way up here Andre Dawson is just it as sixth home run nobody on Terry Puhl one for three today he walked into fifth he double open up the ballgame scored the first run of the game one man up - be it second bow on it first I'm looking at the standings of the four divisions joined we've heard so much about the diamonds fast start Montreal just down a four-game winning streak and we mention Oakland holiday 23 wins six losses with their Billy ball they're amazing Texas is one foreigner oh they're hanging tough they're just six big games behind you know we've been so hot on here say it at our mas that was some trade they made look at Ashby and fadh the baserunners so Jack McKean deal where he got the Langford Armas Mitchell Paige under the Charlie Finley banner Billy has really done a job excitement in the whole bay area deep to right field Collins has room - be his halfway he'll go back to second so there are two outs [Applause] Ashby had some ideas about tagging up and he was halfway and uh well what's the use were down by seven I'll play it safe he's on its second bond is still on it first two men out it's a play you have only one thing to do no matter what the score though next a cup and get the third base Mike Ivey gonna be the hitter Mike Ivey will be the batter look Kourtney was betting in the second spot as Tony told you replacing Reynolds here is ivy this guy is a good player he's a good hitter he's a good glove he had his personal problems over the last couple of years high flyball right-field line near the stands and nobody will get this one strike one Ivy has dropped about 12 15 pounds off last year this past offseason the one before that he was in a hunting accident severely cut his hand or wrist I'm he came over for Jeff Leonard and Dave Bergman Leonard is now playing in Phoenix the rocky bridges one ball one strike that's your neck of the woods you ever see the rock I was a legend I gotta go down and see him one of my favorite guys rocky bridges talk about good guys they always talking about the 350 hit as rock it was a good guy and hit 210 there's this like one ball two strikes [Applause] Bharani one ball two strikes on Ivy League Bernie hasn't kept McNamara on the edge of his seat there must be three or four times in this ball game where I'm sure Mac has said one more hitter he's out of there Bernie just pitches out of it two balls and two strikes always think about Erin Robinson the Yankee catcher with a big catching the game like this he'd call these guys near beer pitches three and two on everybody three and two who he drilling bone the idea with all the pitches so that he is still very strong there's a strong kid he's still throwing pretty hard right centerfield Colin's going back near the wall and cannot get it one run is in here comes fawn he'll try to score he will and Ivy has a double it's nine to four Colin's ran the ball down and when he hit the warning track he looked like he pulled his bluff down it would have been a tough catch but he's taunting this poster to the wall remember he played center field most of last year he's been moved to right and a long way to go but he he shied away from the wall ball may have been catchable so it's nine to four and here is sedan yo sedan yo drove in a run here's of looking to play again it's one of those that is not good for a pitcher zra could have gotten out of this ballgame there's just two runs allowed remember last week when we had Benny it's a didn't get too much help in the outfield strike one [Applause] [Music] dan yo joking to run by bouncing off the short bouncy shorten the third bounce out the first and then struck out and McNamara realized that was the catch of a ball which may have been the reason he's leavin Brett in though he's got to be ready in the bullpen right back up the middle base hit here comes Mike IV sedan yo drives in the run it's now 9 to 5 and here comes McNamara he's trying to make a move [Music] he stayed with him as long as he could we've got a break in the action here and so we'll be right back after these messages we provided affordable life insurance for four generations with occidental life we give you great travel values with
