this is journey Naranjo a sports commentator from the dominican republic the Dodger drive nobs is as follows buddy first are playing second base Dave Lopez but in second in centerfield Ken Landrieu who played last winter in the Dominican Baseball League batting third in left-field Dusty Baker but him fourth at first base Steve Garvey who played two winters in the Dominican League with Elise a baseball club but in fifth from the s cojito baseball club and the LA Dodgers Pedro is head of playing at third base batting sixth catching Mike Scioscia who after two winters in the Dominican league is going back this year but in seventh in right field Ron Roenicke batting eighth a shortstop Darryl Thomas and buddy tonight the pitcher right-hander pitcher Ted power who won 18 games lost three with the Albuquerque baseball club we have over 20 Dominican players in the major leagues and we are doing this game life to the Dominican Republic via radio we also be seen via satellite through NBC network challenger ìhow and he's always so cheerful when we see him Tony Johnny orange is what he's called down there in the a great baseball tradition the national sporting event Republic Nolan Ryan takes the mound for the Astros here in the dome here is the defense behind him Jose Cruz and left Tony Scott and Center Terry Puhl in right field iron Howard third grace Craig Reynolds at Short Phil garner at second base Harry Spellman starting at first base a last be the catcher and Nolan ride along with Sandy Koufax only 2 min of a small history do you have pitched four no-hitters Joe they tell us that three or four times this year when Nolan Ryan came out of the bullpen from warming up before ballgame he had no-hit stuff I tell you any time he walks on the mound you you have to kind of look for it because he just throws that hard his strikeouts as you look at his other stats 9 and 5 he is average nine point five strikeouts per nine innings pitched it's amazing these leads in that department Koufax's ii 9.2 sam mcdowell 8.8 sivir 7.6 and gifts in the 7.2 just one 1/8 though against these Dodgers Tony the thing to note about Ryan this year he is leading the league at 1.8 5 e re among starting pitchers Bob Knepper of the same Houston ballclub is second in the league he is throwing fewer pitches art Howe the third baseman said we are starting to make some good plays behind Ryan because we're more on their toes instead of 150 to 200 pitches a game he's cut it down considerably Ryan works fast it's just that he's been so while he averages 4.3 walks per nine innings and he's got a lot of 3 & 2 counts but he does work fast which infielders and outfielders like here is Davey Lopes five home runs 17 runs batted in hitting at 211 he's the first ball hitter Willie jump on the first pitch thrown by Ryan bruce fremming is behind the plate walked over to the Dodger bench so I think one of the reasons that Ryan is always had difficulty with the Dodgers is because they have been pretty much a discipline ballclub they take a lot of pictures and they walk a lot off Nolan Ryan jumped on the first pitch alright and fouled it straight back and now camp anis was seated over there and camp enough's didn't see it the general manager of the Dodgers he had it all the way didn't even move a branch rickey Protege al camp amis outside ball one he played that like he did as a player Howard for the shortstop ballgame just underway curveball hangs high heels in the game and a half a head of Cincinnati San Francisco three and a half in a National League West Reynolds one out was having some trouble in his army shoe that from Down Under that time he he's never had a great throwing on but it's always been acceptable he gets rid of the ball but he threw a ball away yesterday Joe that he slung over in the same fashion as you did just that he's been very consistent here for the Astros and falling through last night as almost like his shoulder was hurting him here is land row six home runs 39 runs batted in hitting a 251 there's this right some races going down these last two weeks American League East Boston Detroit tied Milwaukee a game and a half Baltimore everybody's in it the second inning Montreal one New York wanted Brian over seven inning periods has thrown consistently 97 98 miles per hour but Bill Burton says that this is the first two years of a herd ride admit that he tires late in the ballgame personally is now 34 years of age but for seven innings he can just blow you away two balls in the strike the count Pittsburgh at st. Louis postponed will be made up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow Pittsburgh and st. Louis that game rained out doubleheader tomorrow 2-1 pitch it's pulled foul as two balls and two strikes that was the drop there's no way that you could be looking for a curve ball off Nolan ride you've got to look fastball at all times if you're up at the plate and if he gets it over as he has been this year it's goodbye there's stats versus the Dodgers career two balls two strikes on Landro had the longest hitting streak in the major leagues last year with Minnesota a timely curveball you will see this same kind of movement on the part of the hitter watch Landro flinch ooh just explodes I think when we touch the pond in the opening Joe talking about two pitch pitchers you see so many kids come up these days we throwing four and five different pitches first throw with just two pitches you've got to have two overpowering pitcher Brian Duffy you got to be able to throw him four strikes as Dusty Baker takes it outside ball one he's got a 12 game hitting streak going in that streak he's twenty four forty six which is a four thirty five average inside two balls and no strikes dr. scald Dusty Baker he's had a good year for these Dodgers you throw that overhand curveball like that but all you can do is genuflect boy that just gets ready for the 9 o'clock mass he's on your knees and nothing you can do once in a while he will do what he just did the Dusty Baker me drop down a little bit more from 3/4 to the side and it was a fastball but Dusty's still buckled drop yellow hammer that term came about the yellow hammer jug uncle Charlie the old Jughead like this and so the late and great bill Mayer manager Pittsburgh used to call it uncle Charlie here it comes swung late right to Phil garner it's going to be an easy inning for the Astros my name is Tony Scott Oh Houston Astros in the first place Astros and give out the starting lineup of the day batting leadoff in right field is Terry Puhl hitting second is Phil Gardner hitting third myself in centerfield Tony Scott hitting fourth his tail crews our left fielder and hitting fifth cuz Allen a speedy called him smash a speed he's hot right now and he's gonna be swinging good bat today and hitting six this arc Howell and third-base and hitting seven as Harry Spillman he's my man Spillman and his shortstop hitting eighth as Craig Reynolds and batting ninth as a pitcher Nolan Ryan with hard gas and you will be seen throwing real hard today hard cash he's really up all the time Ted power hired roar he says he has three pitches but rarely uses a changeup beaten by Cincinnati last week his only win game against the San Diego Padres he's got one of those swerves all it's not a slider it's not a curve it's in between and it's ball one on Terry Puhl ball to Poole and Scott really energies in the batting lineup they thought Poole would be the RBI man but when he was hitting third he can't impress to drive in two runs and Scott was driving them from the leadoff spot so they switched him around and not Poole leads off three balls and no strikes Astros usually have trouble scoring run but especially difficult this year against Dodger pitching its largest nine runs seven ball games against the Dodgers here's the three nothing pitch it's a strike power was with Albuquerque last year thirteen and seven average six point six strikeouts per nine innings and walked 5.5 fouled out of play job wondering right now because the Astros are starting to warm somebody up in their bullpen well if it's just somebody warming up to the tune-up Bob Knepper now he's tuning up his next start you know the camera exposes usually pictures will do that better before a ballgame [Applause] run out joy it almost becomes trite because the Houston Astros have just nine bargains to say that this is a critical on a core game it obviously is but I wondered from a psychological viewpoint if this does not especially the important game because they're batting against head power and Nolan Ryan who's been such a good pitcher they feel they may have to win this game they were wiped out by Hooton last night a shutout and tomorrow they face Valenzuela because almost everybody's picturing the years right psychologically this is a very good game for the Astros I think they gotta beat this kid I think they know it if he beats him I can really let the air out of the balloon I'll tell you there's a fastball at misses want to make a correction I was just handed Pittsburgh and st. Louis is not rained out it's Philadelphia Chicago Pittsburgh did not score in the top of the first tee on against Forsch how to play Montreal two Mets nothing at the end of two Harris against Burris Phil garner the man who has become the glue of the sin filled with a table for the Pirates Burton said since he's been there he has not had a player who's taken charge in the infield like Gardner has man who could become a free agent next year there's no sorta Ron perranoski the pitching coach polish Hall of Fame you shouldn't be too far they write perranoski and hrabowski I think those two guys wish sharp believers were left the right side the guy played with Ted Wilkes at the end there do you better he would have relief but she was the cork lives here in Houston along with George Munger Jeff Cross used to be Cardinal country Garner draws the base on balls he's on if there's got to be a powerful powers we just saw it the control problem but when the Dodger organization about five years spent three years at Kansas State University I'm here as gonna ban is really surprising her newest company has produced better than we ever thought he could Tony Scott and just as a footnote of what you said about garner Deacon Jones telling me that Scott and garner really stabilized the effectiveness of left hand pitching against him since Scott is a switch-hitter there goes Garner here's it throw stolen base so chef gets that slur to throw out cut that ball funny jokes may have heard of the cost of a step-back hand and chopping it down toward the ground it's always more difficult to throw on a breaking ball but had he caught that I meet with the glove up and two hands he may have saved one step and may have gotten garner garner really surprised the kid power very slow going home Chuck Arnaz on his second base one ball and one strike one out Cleveland for Boston nothing at the end of one waits against Eckersley Boston and Detroit tied 26 and 18 Red Sox and the Detroit Records [Applause] no score in this game [Applause] one ball two strikes breaking ball scott has hidden 14 of his last 15 games he is putting outstanding centerfield he made a good catch in left-center field last night off his shoe tops [Applause] there's a 1 2 pitch now it's high Chucho violence tomorrow at Minnesota seven Texas three I'm sort of hanging in there aren't they Minnesota three and a half games behind Kansas City Oakland's a half game behind Kansas City but split season obviously Kansas City's only worried about Minnesota openers already in he got him on a fair ball I'm gonna hang an expression on you so we've heard so many different expressions that pitching coaches use tapping you think to me I was talking to Ron perranoski about 10 power the doc pitcher and I said but he has a problem what is it he said he lacks arm discipline what would you interpret that to me I have to think about that because I had a high-rent district term good old country hardball and threw a drop once in a while I can understand that arm discipline file back Cruz strike one let me think about it you know you hear these terms at different release points and the speed has become velocity and control has become location but Ted power lacks arm discipline but he's catching on to her it sounds like a Madison Avenue PR campaign fastball one ball one strike he gets lazy with his delivery kind of it what he said he changed his release point that sometimes he will throw three-quarter sometimes elbow it did close to his body is breaking he doesn't throw from the same spot often enough in her all it's like a group swing of golf or group swinging they're hitting he doesn't have his release point group [Music] outside two balls at once perranoski said it for hard floors he is who struck that a lot of guy who Kansas State and in the minor leagues it is not unusual there's Ron perranoski bail-ins whele right behind him and that was Danny oh sorry sorta Fernando will pitch tomorrow he's with Papa motors nicknamed papa power is a big guy 226 for Cruz it's a strike here's a man right in this situation I'm sure that Scioscia as the appeal goes down on the third-base umpire John Kibler that Scioscia will not let crews who spent such a good player for this ballclub beat up cleanup hitter with first base open and two outs gonna still make amateur bench rather Ashby the next set of improves even though Ashby has been high two balls and two strikes with two outs garner at second no score he fouls it down the left-field line Cruz was in a stretch where he was trying to knock in runs by himself and lost his stroke he was trying to pull everything because they just weren't scoring runs Cruz has 13 home runs the most by an astro since 1978 when Bob Watson at 14 but this is tough ballpark with all right my associate just went out and had a conference with his pitcher when he was back don't get my football ahead first base is open though space is open and get the breaking ball off me anyhow but powers best pitches is fastball I wouldn't give him a strike to him via breaking ball three balls two strikes I'll tell you how how much this best pitch I asked the question I asked a lot of young pitchers I said Ted when you leave the hotel what's the one pitch you want to leave with go tell him a fastball my fastball which is pretty obvious three balls two strikes two outs Guthrie Oklahoma Ted power breaking ball three and two he was not going to give him a fastball that's one of those unintentional intentional here is Ashby four home runs 30 runs better than hitting 281 and Deacon Jones has been working with him he's got a new stance which is the key to it is lifting his front foot which allows him to lay back and doesn't have to pull that trigger quite as so I've never seen Sadaharu oh the great Japanese homerun Slugger in person to have unfilmed but he picked his leg up ashbey does it a little bit like that but not to quite the extremely Sunohara older what's the right front foot purple mist it's like wine [Applause] Espie is a switch center but to Holland has been doing the catching against left-handed pitching most of the time this year [Applause] two strikes in fact Deacon Jones the hitting coach has a drill as we look at the stance there goes the leg up it's a timing device but he also has him hitting fungos with just one arm it's got a reason for that which we talk about it's the bottom arm on the bat that is what he hasn't written for strengthen that arm whatever he's doing it's working for Ashby 17 for 23 since the change here's the pitch line drive right at David Lopes he hit it right at him now there's a guy with a dandruff problem the guy with the glasses behind him doesn't have it just put his hat on but this guy [Music] honey alike that orange area looks like an ice cream flavor there are some cities who have not gotten caught up in the pennant race around the league but Houston certainly has we saw last week in Boston they certainly have it is tightened up I'm trialled two and a half games over st. Louis and each using the game and a half for Cincinnati as Garvey takes a pitch outside for ball one Montreal to the arc one third inning Pittsburgh st. Louis nothing nothing in the second outside two balls no strikes gave you that final score Minnesota over Texas 73 you hear that grunt that sealed microphone we had when Nolan Ryan released the - and all fits to Garvey you could hear the big grunt come out sounds like Wimbledon everything here oh yeah tennis players all four he walked him Garvey's on brings up the rare oh he's hitting 304 with 12 home runs 44 runs better than who is playing third base today [Music] curveball is a strike miss with the fastball came back with the curveball and sometimes a catch will do that to bring that picture back on the track another curveball this misses one ball and one strike talking to Bill Merton before the game there's Guerrero and his stats play center field he has been throwing out for a right fielder a third base the starter said he could play second base he's playing third because Ron Cey has a broken bone in his left arm maybe out for the season curveballs start to really snap as you could see Guerrero going to open of a dance step it stayed inside his two balls in one strike this little boy in nolan ryan jumps out as he blows that bubble gum huggie Duhamel right about that curve that they've tried to work out so hard with Nolan Ryan to get better control he said he's more relaxed he had a knee problem last year and some back problems and he really couldn't push off his right leg but he's throwing it in a more relaxed fashion now not forcing the breaking ball he's been getting it over more often this year good cut a big front there's two balls and two strikes Garvey at first Joe West the umpire Harry's going home to mine it's the kind of ballpark the Astrodome which is an excellent pitchers ballpark you can make mistakes here and hang curveballs and get away with them but like the Rick Lee feeling or a Fenway Park in Atlanta such attractive times there your dimensions 390 of the power alleys 406 the dead center field and the ball is not carry very well for a day game like this Joe there is also a problem at times for an outfielder seeing the ball off the top of the dome row for the paint is wearing out Garvey's at first base Ashby is throwing out 32 of 91 which is a 35% Garvey probably be running let's see what happens there he goes he fouls it out of play I think that move Tony was dictated more on Ashby statistics rather than Garvey speed or Guerrero handling the pen yeah I think also the Nolan ride when he tries to get everything together he is a little bit slow going the whole play kicks that leg so there are a lot of advantages and percentages in the favor of the sort of starting Garvey even though Garvey does not have speed three balls two strikes nobody out I also get a little movement in that infield with Reynolds covering that time it goes and it's fouled off and Garvey comes back it is interesting to see what happens in a situation like this to the middle infielders the shortstop and second baseman because both Reynolds and garner even though only one was covering that time it was garner the pitch before it was Reynolds but they both creep a little bit closer there watching the runner he's got to be aware of the steel and that means it cuts down to their range left and right and that base hit could sneak through especially on the carpet when the ball gets through the influence so much more quickly any kind of movement you can create divert the attention the pitcher and the catcher so your advantage Garvey's Guerrero waits there he goes there he comes back it's always interesting to watch the runner walk back like Garvey's looking over the sand I wish you'd hit the ball I mean come on he's checking the coach to see if they want him to continue to run enjoy the indication that with the three pitches that Guerrero has been able to file off may be an indication that no he doesn't have his good fastball yet it may come when he is right he's got that thing up around 100 miles per hour and that ball starts hopping up high and the strike zone as the last pitch was to Guerrero it's at times untouchable there he goes struck him out here's the throw say so the curve ball breaking ball he certainly was a curve ball in a beauty tough ball for Ashby to handle their day is breaking down and a tough little bit tougher hitter is it tell you throw three fast balls and then throw the curveball throws a bit high and Garvey makes it on line throw from Ashby may have had him it would have been close second base umpire down or dick Stello see how he's got the inside position more American League umpires are go into that position also dick Stello and will there be 6 or 4 umpires new mini playoffs it's a big controversy going now I be six I think so too I think the importance of the miniseries and again if the the integrity the game is in question there's any doubt put on sex can't argue for the money or whatever else the umpires might want that'll be negotiated I think stick umpires to down the line I think like the World Series the League Championship Series I think there should be six I agree with that but that 10% of the first three games that's the whole thing that I just don't understand I don't know that much about it but it's a little tough ten umpires 110 percent of the first three games players want it but they don't want the coaches and managers included three balls and no strikes on Mike Scioscia Steve Garvey is on its second base no score we're in the second inning no one Ryan falling behind was able to get a big strike on on Guerrero got a strike off Landro in the first inning [Music] break down a medal three balls in the strike these Astros individually they may not be able to match up against anybody else but collectively it's a good team [Applause] inside the Astrodome good crowd they had 35,000 last night charlie what you said is the indicative of what great pitching can mean to a ballclub you might not have much power which the Astros don't they're not as speedy as last year but the PRA is a team is 2.65 foul straight back boy a great pitching and a great bullpen like they've had and something starting to pitch well and sambito and Smith coming out of the bowl kind of McCarty Knepper did you like is it meat a lot well citrus team one day asked the question it's asked every year at this time who would you rather face in the playoffs a couple of the Dodgers made no bones about it said we'd rather play Cincinnati because with us Houston pitching it can wipe you out in the short series and they can certainly do that 3 to 2 Scioscia [Applause] look Charlie I he really roll that one off the table you saw Scioscia like we saw earlier it wasn't usual from left-handed hitter against the right-handed pitcher to flinch like both Landro and social just dead that will show you how that curveball exploded you lose it and you pick it up and it's too late here is Ron Roenicke born in Covina California in 1956 curve ball inside ball one [Applause] you see this shared last year the Dodgers records against the Astro in the Reds 8161 red Satan 8 1980 see the record their last ball misses two balls and no strategy a brother of the ball of the Orioles Gary Roenicke Redick he showed us a good throwing arm but last night he threw lot at third base and a fly ball that was medium deep right sale next up running speed is the kid who had knee surgery on both these little of last season but he's cut back for that speed foul by two balls in one strike brenneke 6-footer 180 pounds Dodgers number one selection in the June 1977 free-agent Draft [Music] brenneke this year the minor leagues at 316 with nine home runs obviously 1940 when the RBIs 15 home runs and 94 runs batted in 126 ballgames that's by Ashby there goes Garvey he scored a wild pitch this is not unusual for doli riot it is so difficult with that curveball and he really snapped off like that asked me tried to smother in front of him but couldn't his wild pitch number 15 this year for Nolan Ryan stats for all the other pictures in the major leagues but I gotta believe that's high in both leagues that's a bundle that is a bundle three balls one strike two outs no score were in the second inning it's pop straight up art Howe will fight the windowpanes and foul territory [Applause] the second inning there is no score and coming to bat anyhow Spillman and reynolds art hall will lead it off Godspeed Houston three to nothing Hooton at a four-hitter Astros lead was cut to a game and a half over the Reds Giants three San Diego nothing Cincinnati 10 Atlanta to Soto won his 10th night nostra at home runs Pittsburgh 5 st. Louis for it's a strike the Cardinals have lost seven of the last eight four in a row Philadelphia nine Chicago to Mike Schmidt at his 28th home run lead some major leagues Matthews at five RBIs in Montreal beat the Mets six to three strike two Larry parish in that Montreal Met game four RBIs xposed two and a half in front of st. Louis the National League East Milwaukee eight Detroit six Robin Yount two out three run homer in the ninth wanted for the Brewers no walking only a half game out Boston five Cleveland for Red Sox tied for Detroit that wind Yastrzemski a two-run homer ball one Baltimore one New York nothing mcgregor is 6 hitter 10 to 5 in the southern 2 but the monthly run homer Seattle 8 Kansas City three California 11 Toronto 5 in Chicago P don't lose 62 those were last night's results is how hits a high hopper the Sharks top one away tomah's play as you all know almost every position on the diamond at one time or another his replaced Bill Russell left the game last night in the fifth inning Russell has it the stress factor in his leg he's had it for three years Joe they finally discovered it requires surgeries at a bat finger dislocated last year he's had problems with a bad wrist he said that the artificial surface makes it tough on him as we look at Harry Spillman and after the season Russell will have surgery Ron Cey is out a lot of injuries Dodgers Spillman hits the first pitch to Davey Lopes - away the Cardinals have taken a two to nothing lead over Pittsburgh at the end of - origin home run in the second inning Philadelphia Chicago game postponed Cincinnati Atlanta nothing nothing end up one Montreal to New York one into three Cleveland 5 Boston nothing bottom of the third Milwaukee nothing Detroit nothing in the third Minnesota beat Texas here's Craig Reynolds rebels taking a lot of time after two quick outs he wants to give nolan ryan a little bit breathing on the bench he took a lot of time in the on-deck circle they even take a pitch strike one he did there you see Nolan Ryan al Ryan hit a home run for us on our game of the week like to says bruce fremming young son Steve is here with me spanky nickname he'd have a thousand words to say about whether they should use four or six umpires and about the money very active in the umpires association bring the strike he and his son Steve umpire on the sandlots in Milwaukee he's gonna try it [Applause] [Music] the corners here in the Astrodome are very treacherous difficult to play the carom as we look in brenell's inbound record there you see the section of juts out and as exceptionally tough when a player comes in on the road but even cruises at Shell the cruise of the ball the left corner last night and the ball just stuck in the wall almost like a thug sometimes it'll hit a beam and that baby might bounce 810 feet all the way back to the infield I talked to him about that tone and he says every ball is different yeah jhaza player into the 12th triple foetal that ties rentals for the nastily with Richards at the San Diego Padres so he's on it third this is a good doubles and triples ballpark there you see it earned an a Moreno a Templeton eight [Applause] whoa nice play by Scioscia blocked at 55 foot curveball he saved a run big guy got in front of it nicely and rentals down at third place at an excellent walking lead joel pett ball had skipped a little bit away with the pitcher up he may have tried to calm you don't figure with two outs that Nolan Ryan is gonna drive in this run on curve ball gets away but he doesn't advance I tell you as the first base umpire he called it a strike there's Reynolds Joe West well he's kind of funny with going after the ball that ball right there reaching for a backhand that's gonna cause him some problem he's gonna have a ball doing it that way that's gonna scoot between his legs one day those last two bounced up it's not the property about that I don't think one ball two strikes his glove is not in a good position but he's got that nice Italian rump in front of it nice and wide positive his mama fed him is working the great advantage on the 55 foot curveball curveball misses two balls and two strikes [Applause] so nothing but breaking balls Reynolds is at third we have no score we're in the bottom of the second Reynolds is just tripled Astros really have to scramble it get the manufacturer on and his offering tougher than the spells best against his Dodger staff which is so glad it's high Reynolds has power pitching off the stretch misses the man he wants to get Terry Puhl is the on-deck hitter making it tough on himself in d3 and - I know LaRon not known for his back there you see on deck batter Terry Puhl here's a big pitch he walked in he walked in third base on balls given up by power and that's what sets a manager to Pacey [Applause] Ryan is on at first Reynolds is on a third and Terry Puhl it will bounced out his first time up is the batter davey lopes come in the talk is poor weights [Applause] that's one most simple conversations of hey man we can't make a play if you're gonna walk people and you've got to let him hit the ball tell you I learnt social is right there he motioned out a steep dive even today but make sure that daddy's playing Ryan at first base ride you could see Garvey playing behind it we was so sure he called it the attention of garden left-handed hitter up one strike the count [Applause] two strikes on Terry Puhl to Manaus associate this will be an interesting pitch now they're way ahead they can make it work right here for the two ball to strike one ball kind [Applause] he broken back setting up this way lucky one Detroit nothing bottom of the third Ryan is at first Reynolds is at third with his control here's your pitcher decision he's got to make it happen right here [Applause] what a play by Barbie he hit a bullet Garvey playing behind his tawny pointed out able to make that play if he's holding him on but there would have been a lapse there if so she doesn't call it they got a problem Toni you bet says around probably a double maybe a triple if that ball wraps around down that corner great play by Steve Garvey it's nothing nothing Dodgers in Houston but in Detroit Mill walking to try to have an abandoned in in Detroit for those of you joining us now from the Dodger and Houston Astros game Merle Herman and Ron Luciano with you in Detroit where the Brewers lead the Tigers by a score of one to nothing in the bottom of the third Kirk Gibson batting three two count trying around a third struck it out of the inning is over so a moose Haas comes up with a very big strikeout in Gibson who has led these Tigers in the second half of the season very disgusted with himself and Haase who is giving manager Buck Rogers a fine job as a starting pitcher today walks off the field with a one to nothing lead at the end of three and Ron Luciano has an ex-football player this guy is a very very tough competitor yes he certainly is but the one thing about him is that they say that maybe maybe he will have trouble with a curveball and you saw it right there curve ball low out of the strike zone he tries for it does not get it back here at the Astrodome Darryl Thomas with the count of one ball and two strikes the leadoff man here in the top half the third and him no score Kirk Gibson as your Pearl Harbor and Ron Luciano really doing a job for Sparky Anderson the Tigers of the second half not that time it bad maybe gold no Boston three runs in the bottom of the third at the end of three five Boston three weights against Eckersley Minnesota beat Texas seven three that's a final score fastball misses Darryl Thomas hitting at 260 miles it back he has played everywhere he is a capture if you need him he does a good job everywhere he can steal your base look at some of the things that Nolan Ryan has done and yeah he has been a pitcher who's been just barely over 500 a lifetime in his career but he hadn't played with very good ball clubs tonight that's one time when a great ball club California Eagles struggle along for a lot of years seven one hitters aside for this four no-hitters he's never had a no hitter in the National it's the second walk given up by Nolan Ryan here's the picture power he's looking for the body for the but riders awfully tough to bunt and you never know what Daryl table is gonna do he could take off and move up onto the line drive power is a former catcher say that for whatever that means I should be able to handle the bat he said he'd clock a little bit when he was in high school when I wasn't pitching then one of my bat in the lineup said maybe a catch I said ordinarily to put that guy in the outfield but they taking the chances well like wherever they want to be I played here comes how sneaking into third they pickoff play bunted darn it got away in behind Daryl Thomas wasn't necessarily picked off with the only ride but Ashby was looking out of the corner of his eye I'm certain Tony that's one of those plays that sometimes you call it I'll be there I mean you give the catcher to sign and I'll be there and then they catch your answer Judy simply says if I get the ball I'll throw it to you you don't put a play on per se with the pitch out but it's an out be there kind of situation to strike pity curveball misses Joe that thing with garner coming over as he did the pitch before that also serves the purpose with Spillman break-in as he has to to cover that that side of the diamond for the bonk that leaves Gerald Thomas a bigger lead but with Garner's sneaking behind it he's got to be careful he might just lose that one step where they could get him at second base popped in the air foul that's a strikeout that's a fourth strikeout for [Music] so what a man out davey lopes with Darryl Thomas on it first-base so you've got a hit-and-run combination as we take a look at the Dodger bench the opposing batters are hitting 191 against Nolan Ryan here in the Astrodome not exactly killing him on the road either 205 average but he's tough here highball one Lopes takes a good look at danios our we'll just had the luxury Tony I'd like to pitch out right here but you couldn't do it I think he's going to this pitch I could buy that with ashbey's in a little bit of a trap Brian has been a little while wasn't as good move that was just a commercial that's over again Jim Russo to Baltimore super Scout us interesting theory that Lou Brock confirmed on bass dealers almost Rock and Russo say it hurts the baserunner when you don't throw over there just keep looking him back how close that was well it's just giving a base runner or base dealer another chance to see it moves there he goes struck him out low throw he's safe baby sit back there you can't blame him Ashby he's got to get a strike but you feel like he's going to run while he gets the breaking ball again difficult one to throw on doesn't get a whole lot on the ball but I really think the weight base stealers are going now that catcher has got to keep one thing foremost that pitchers mind he's get the hitter they're gonna steal on you anyway they've taken so many the ball moves away from pitchers they their hands are scrapped a lot of time fili what's going on there's no doubt they've legislated against pictures to get more offense in the game taking away ball moves lower the mound several years back putting all the artificial surfaces you come close to hitter these days either charges the Milan or he files agreements so they're getting strapped year in and year out two balls and two strikes here but in the American League when they throw at you don't have a chance to come back to sit on the bench so get off the brave and you can sit on a bench throw it B two balls in two strikes he got him Davey Lopes that's a fifth strikeout for Nolan Ryan he doesn't believe it [Applause] make any difference three or four that he's gotten on his breaking ball four on the breaking ball [Applause] here's Kenny Landro he was called out on strikes as Lopes heads back to the bench tell you that no one Ryan can spray your bat right with termites he's been working on a changeup the last two years Nolan Ryan has but he will not use that a game it's a changeup that he recalls having talked to Andy Messersmith about years ago out of play [Applause] so if he throws you change up Tony I don't care how good it is that's a Pete does your real face I think he's doing what Ron get me to started doing the last two years saying listen well the fastball is gone and the hard sliders gone no one riding his curveball in this case I still want to pitch a few years and have to start finessing Tom Seavers made a little bit that transition on the bar a little more breaking stuff off-speed stuff down the left-field line drifting near the stands art how he'll not have a play today when you watch Nolan Ryan throw you wonder where his heat comes from that hundred mile per hour fastball all you've got to do is watch the lower part of his body and see how much of the way the rump section of his body gets it it's not all arm it's like a a chain reaction like a whip blow whip cracking you're never gonna be a pitching coach if you use expressions like that you got a fan Trump part of his body you got to use you know arm discipline location setting us a center of gravity rotation well he almost had Thomas looked like Ashby was gonna fill it see I can understand for the late and great Dizzy Dean Oh does it say be far that ball he says far that ball I knew what he meant armless it is a jump up and down here let's check this out if he goes curveball fastball here's where he's gonna move her ball right now two balls and two strikes it has not been afraid to throw it 3 & 2 2 & 2 Landro can't guess cuz he's got two strikes on him but he got him on a curveball the last time been having some trouble only one RBI since August 31st at some 19 games he got that last night he cooked a single in the right centerfield fastball and his three balls and two strikes with two outs he is walk to is struck out five there is no score were to third inning Darryl Thomas is on at second base Maddi Atlanta nothing nothing third inning Oh file looking further into the Noland line overpowering stat sheets 300 or more strikeouts five times that's a record what's the late king that right there is where a Seaver or a Nolan Ryan he's poised on that right leg where the pitchers say he has got it all together you can almost balance there and you start that topple toward the mound some people said drive off the mound but one of the reasons I think Nolan Ryan and the Seavers and the Robin Roberts and the spawns never really have a whole lot of our problems serious arm problems it's because they use their lower body so well the strain is taking off a lot of this straight has taken off the iron you can never remove it all and run waiting three balls two strikes two outs a lot of play once again don't crowd here got to be what 35,000 like they were last night Nolan Ryan as you look at him pitch here it is again right there is where they say he's got it all together you can see a puck that left shoulder try and keep his body from opening too soon you can see the tremendous strain on an elbow on his shoulder the starter position not a very natural position throwing a baseball overhead bow back again Pittsburgh to st. Louis to during the bottom of the fourth Montreal two Mets one top of the sixth we'll keep you right up to date Cleveland Boston five three and the fourth and there you see the strikeouts Valenzuela who will go tomorrow for the Dodgers alton who broke the record National League strikeout record Soto's Cincinnati right in there here's a 3-2 pitch once again he walked a third base on balls giving up Dodgers have yet to make a hit not believing Nolan tried even though it's right hand reverses right hand and one of the pitch to Dusty Baker is if you give me five or six dusty Baker's on a team and I wouldn't you a lot of penance you don't hear much about this guy because there's say driving and all the runs so many years and Garvey and the others and the pitching staff I'll take this guy over a lot of those player right at the second baseman garner [Applause] the Astrodome nothing nothing Dodgers in Houston in all of us here at NBC Sports were saddened this week upon learning of the death of lovely Tony Silla berto wife of one of our most popular cameraman we offer our prayers for you George and you little Frankie in Atlanta not much we can say at a time like this we hope the two is the consolation to you and Hornets and friends are thinking about you our hearts are heavy for you two balls and no strikes on Phil garner [Applause] it's a strike garner came over August 31st from Pittsburgh or second baseman Johnny ray who's been starting for the Pirates and pitcher Randy Niemann Kevin Houston three balls in one strike power has walked three struck out one he's allowed one hit there's no score doctor one of the players from the Astros who can go to the free agent market 15 days after the conclusion of the season left field it's going to drop for a base hit so Gartner is on [Applause] [Music] so the leadoff man is on it brings up Tony Scott it was called out on strikes his first time up one of the things they want Scott to do more of is take some pictures be a little more choosy up there he it's an aggressive hitter he swings the bat you run that that possibility which is a bad one if he starts taking more he loses the aggressiveness there's no fine line and he not he's gone pitch count they should get him though very close Phil thought that he had his fur on the bag and the tag was up high he had a few words as he stood on the bag with the second base umpire dick Stello was a tough call but what a throw by Scioscia on this pitch out good ball to handle Scott couldn't help him out on the pitch out watch the tag by Darryl Thomas the shortstop Stella write it on the play it is awfully close no matter what angle you replay that on you're gonna get a a gripe in any situation was the heel on the bag and the tag up higher on the knee area we'll give you another angle from Harry Coyle our director and Mike Weisman our producer the ball was there ahead of him it's not and it's where he tagged him Scott right back up the middle Darryl Thomas bobbles he almost made a good play new Scott drug probably may have had was trying to feel it with one hand make it man air then a good play because it covered a lot of ground Scott slaps the ball around quite a bed so Darryl Thomas was not playing I might add that last night Scioscia pitched out was able to get a runner and he pitched out here and he's been doing it pretty much on his own calling him Scott six of nine has an Astros for his stolen bases but they're gonna give Cruz a chance to swing that bat the one place you've got to give manager Bill Virdon credit his last night he had a couple of men thrown out but he refuses to hold his men down he still wants them to keep running he knows he has to manufacture run there we could see Scott on the move one ball no strikes I would think Tony with Cruz hitting who's got his stroke back I think be a little bit unless he was about 70% sure Scott wouldn't be gone he's gone on this pitch I doubt his stolen 16 bases this year ball one strike bottom of the fourth note walking Detroit tied one apiece Hefner homerun top of the fifth Vicksburg in st. Louis tied Montreal 2 to 1 bottom of the 6th Cleveland 5 3 over Boston bottom of the 4th Cincinnati Atlanta nothing nothing bottom of third and Minnesota beat Texas 7 3 final score right up to date Scioscia is such a take-charge catcher even though he's young he alerted power to step off in case he's moving and not take Scott for granted he even does that with veteran pitchers which is very impressive for social now here's an interesting call two balls in one strike one out no score Scott's got good speed is he running is he not running because it's manages to life I say he's not going once this situation you know many times with all the different steal signals going on between a manager some guys are on their own that's one sign some pick your pitch something you've got to go on this pitch some don't steal at all that may be the case with the left-hander up and crews so you could give three or four different signs to a runner like Scott it's two balls in one strike with one out you play manager at home what do you think he's holding high-low over Cartman's head Scott may be able to score up but the flawless run [Applause] God leopard found out about the young kid Ron Redick is armed yeah yesterday last night's ballgame with pool tried to go to from second to third here's Garvey who has played 100 14 consecutive errorless games an artificial surface hop tied up in a double play on dirt and grass Scott over the shoulder into the car now he picks up his coach leopard at first coming down the line waving a bond then when Reddick he made the perfect relay throw the davey lopes they decided to hold him well with two outs they may have taken the chance Joe and sent him one out he can still score in the sacrifice fly now it's Ron perranoski ow well if got first base open with one man out here so it's a case of pitching carefully to the left-handed batter Ashby and Howe who is a 307 hitter is he on deck man but his RBI is not that impressive how is only driven in 33 runs and here's a double play man as we look at Dave gulfs loosening up and bobbing the steel plays the protection man casing the line drive hit down there it's ghost loose enough for the Dodgers one man out Scott is at third Cruz is on its second base a base hit one run is in here comes Cruz Asheville's lead to nothing John the first any with to a nine there's the Astros bench ask me at the ball right on the null is a Mayan drive at Lopes hits the ball very hard once again so the newfound late kick dividend by Deacon Jones is working and bass ps4 hit three home runs autumn last three has four this year at all this whole bunch is come to the second half this year hit the ball out harder so shout out talking to power and Davey Lopes is there goals has been loosening up they're taking a look at the bullpen as bruce fremming walks out there Ashby just picks him up base hit to drive in two runs the Astros take the lead as we look at Bill Burton last year's manager of the year a lighter this morning use the term there's the sorta use the term even-handed about burden was talking about Verdun that even though some of the players may not care for his move but he's very consistent with them they know what to expect from her that's very important all on on our how many people are trying to figure out how art Howe is able to play he's got a torn Achilles tendon and the other one is strained the similar engine injury bill Robinson to the Pirates which requires surgery you have surgery after your season it's a strike now has the longest hitting streak in the major leagues this season 23 games as we looked at Ashby at first base he has excellent bat control art how and what your trial can Sam office and lots of Pittsburghers got a contract how to play one ball and two strikes [Applause] one man out two - nothing Astros lead Ashby's at first [Applause] outside two balls two strikes I think it's interesting when you look at stats and they give you a lot of things in numbers but everybody says in the Houston Astros they don't have a whole lot of power and they don't when you look at their home run total for this season they've got 39 Astros opponents have only 36 divided over their opponents so that may be a more important stat than saying they don't have a whole lot of power the team - I think sometimes - Toni people want to talk about power think only in terms of home runs so we look at the Dodger bench we've sorta we doubles and triples have to figure in the power and this is a ballpark with a home you're not gonna hit that one Kansas City in American Way no Astro has ever led in a major department hitting home runs RBIs [Applause] ask those of its 16 home runs of the doll their opponents have hit just seven season listen there goes a straight line drive [Applause] just barely foul John Kibler right down on top of the play bruce fremming was going down to third base to make the call there but there's the man who bullet file politics he really had a good pitch there to break the ball to just hung inside belt high just rolled and he did it's so hard and hooked foul he said he's been doing a lot of that I was talking to the batty patient one of the reasons is he said I'm a back foot hitter generally see but without Achilles tendon tear I can't stand my back foot I'm getting out in front way ahead of a lot of pitchers [Applause] right failed deep way back was Rena key look out SP we're gonna nonchalant it back and run a key made a believer out of him as he went sliding back the first two men out and it is always nice to see somebody with a good arm and has even bored to see a young man like Redick he not afraid to use it throw behind him very accurately one hop and came very close to getting Ashby the two middle infielders decoyed asked me for just a second Darryl Thomas and Lopes on the fly ball so he didn't pick up the ball quite in time Harry Spillman hit the first pitch the last time up and bounced out Garvey is behind the base runner Ashby at first [Applause] and there's the ballgame you saw been on base Garvey made a great play to stop a line drive and prevented Houston rod by play behind the runner her ball is high one ball one strike Milwaukee destroyed 1:1 and 5th it's like batty [Music] straightaway centerfield Landro as our own he makes the catch a Tanzanian but it's a good inning for Houston they score 2 runs Ashby driving in both runs and the end of three innings a score here used Dodgers nothing Astros Judah nothing as we go into the fourth inning and Steve Garvey will lead it off Barbie always played in 937 consecutive game fifth on the all-time list Garrity's bars first I don't think that record will ever be broken 2130 strike one he is still grunting now that fall really it was a fastball but the ball really sailed away from Steve Garvey and many times the ball will pick up scuffs off the artificial surface I recall that a few years ago they went from horse side to cowhide and the cowhide is not as tough so they will change the balls much more frequently now than they did call them in the olden days if you will but this course artificial surface will pick up scuffs the only one of that bog way you get a little scuff mark a little bit you can make her do tricks one strike two count on Garvey look out inside Garvey's collected 200 plus hits seven times in his career he has really been a consistent player and his contract will be up bounced foul they have a youngster on the bench Mike Marshall has some tremendous stats as we look at Daniel's Ark at third an Albuquerque Marshall was viable players of the Coast League Garvey has done it here so I'll camp penance and Peter O'Malley in the Dodgers Lasorda they have a nice problem profile talk about some of the stats of the kids the man you mentioned Mike Marshall 34 home runs 137 runs batted in 128 games another kid they can be baldanado some names to Conger he said to say hello to all my friends and go he had 104 RBI season with 21 home runs Mark Bradley's another one he's from Elizabethtown Kentucky each town he's in say hello doll and her here at Albuquerque team the Dodgers have apparently was loaded two balls and two strikes Steve Garvey Milwaukee Detroit bottom of the fifth big ball game all tied one apiece hit Boston Cleveland 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth outside that's the final score that's the only one we have today Minnesota over Texas 7 to 3 Texas Lawson tough one-run ball games doc met its the other night well here's another three and two count Noli gonna go breaking stuff done it a couple times today in this situation he got him with the fastball in the front six strikeouts [Applause] it comes mell right now I wonder if something happened to Ryan he's out very quickly after the strikeout to talk to Nolan Ryan I didn't notice any paint on the part of right after you threw this patch quite a story Mel right he has what the golden nuggets imprinted and printed his lungs I don't answer a few years back and he says he feels no after-effects nobody Ryan on that last pitch three and two to Garvey threw the fastball well he got Mel right laughing on the way off so fairly he's alright here it is if you can pick something up fastball it just runs it on the fist Bell I don't know what made hide right come out I'm sure you didn't come out to say you still got a no-hitter going let's say Clyde Wright old left-handed pitcher net Mel right fouled back by Guerrero well his grunning is alright you can hear it I tell you what will not say anything and you just listen our field microphone will pick it up that's breaking male-only grunts and fastball he grunts enough we're getting a laugh track our call us every time he floods it's a fast ball might be a little late let's see if we get it this time one ball one strike the count that was a curveball no doubt about it I wish my friend a scientist would tell me that's an optical illusion one ball two strikes on Guerrero one man out nobody on two nothing Houston lady Myrna Ford another curveball head whitens Mike Marshall the relief pitcher with a scoop all explained to be in scientific terms what makes a curveball break one time and also skee-ball he's trying to be the bernoulli theory and italian friend of yours as I said Mike stop is beyond me you heard at that time he jammed in fly ball to right field [Applause] really at a high curveball to begin with Sochaux is kind of interesting let's see if we can pick up that grunt on Sochi because he should give him a fastball I would think he'd start him out with a fastball doli really hasn't had from what we've heard about him this year we haven't seen him pitch this year has not had the kind of control they've been talking about he's been behind some hitters he's run the count to 3 and 2 but he's but maybe able to make the pitch when he's had to strike one [Applause] the grunt is what gets you jailed cruising left field Jose three brothers played the major leagues at one time the hidys still there they sage really improved on the left field Joe he's really worked hard at it he had a bad rap on a baseball those reputations stay with you one strike the count scale of 10 I was about a force for the bubble Ryan has said 15 or more strikeouts 21 times unbelievable he says 6 he's at 10 or more strikeouts 131 time in his major league career here's the 1 1 pitch pulled foul curveball it's 2 to nothing we're in the fourth inning so ship was called out on strikes on the curveball and that's got to be running through his mind right now if Ryan throws a fastball you'd have to think it would be outside the strike zone is set up the - - which would be a curveball let's see what happens [Applause] fastball Wow sailing out there two to nothing Houston leading the Dodgers we're in the bottom half the fourth and in here at the Astrodome very aesthetic shot I like it a little culture six here those opera singers before the game last night high chopper to davey lopes there's one out remind you next weekend our game of the week we really haven't picked the game yet because there are so many things happening in so many divisions so we hope you'll tune in and check your listings to see the game in your area Danny Ozark manny mota Mike Scioscia talking Terry Forester who has really contributed that putz coming off our problems out of the bullpen and Tommy Lasorda really has a young bull pen Stewart the how some of the other kids down there Tony and it hasn't gone on the scoreboard yes just went on now two-nothing Cincinnati leading Atlanta in the bottom of fifth householder a home run as Brian takes the pitch for ball one the run against Negroes Cincinnati to Atlanta nothing householder a home run Pittsburgh 3 st. Louis 2 in the bottom of the 6th orange has a home run in that game Philadelphia Chicago rained out Montreal to New York one bottom of the sixth I would think one of the possibilities for our game next Saturday Milwaukee and Detroit beat again he's a 2o pitch it is three and all little walkie to try winner bottom of the sixth up there it's one one home run by heavier Haas against Wilcox will and six Boston three at the end of five you know Joe and to try went up to Boston lost four straight up there and then lost five in a row after that including that a lot of people thought they were finished bounced right back Sparky's got the pitching staff going good young ball club up there Boston Detroit identical in the standings this morning 26 and 18 Brian lines one in the right center field Landro cuts it off Ryan hasn't stopped [Applause] he doesn't have that pleasure to offer [Music] [Applause] so there's one out one man out here is Terry Puhl he'd bounce out from bursting in the mind hardik Barbie in the second stall for a little time is now a couple pictures begin working for the Dodgers so shout to talk with powers Terry Forrester he's the left-hander and Dave ghost the right hand Tom Lasorda danios are you could make a good case for Tom Lasorda's manager of the year what do you think of what he's had to do that bullpen revamping it with the kids he made Valenzuela starter this year has come up maybe the sigh of the low accountant maybe some others and he's had all the injuries that you mentioned earlier Joe he's also had some fellows who have Reggie Smith who hardly played it all Forster hasn't played that much [Applause] strike says bruce fremming yes sir jerry pulses as a third-base umpire now I'll have to ask anybody I saw it myself John Kibler did not make the call he did not give help because he was not asked did poking his back back back in time when I he gives back back in time he called it a strike right now and Scioscia backhanding the ball once again hurt ball pulled foul it gets in front of the ball but that's not the way you should catch that ball he's got to have that glove coming up the face of that glove should be up if he catches it fine but main thing is to keep the ball in front of you when it hits the dirt [Applause] it was an interesting call he called fastball in the emotion he wanted to pitch high and away that that's something that you don't ordinary call but I think that this ballpark and pool is not had he's not a pull hitter does not have great power but you use this ballpark the big part is in the alleys in the center field and you get that lazy flyball on the out to you guidance at 400 feet in this ballpark and it dies away again pitch the boy playing boy if that went in the hole Ryan stops at second pool is on at first one man out and the batter is burner could be it for the kit barber coming up Forrester and gold should be ready Geiger's coming up a right-handed hitter so goats maybe the guy coming in Montreal four Mets one that's in the top of the seventh as well sorta comes out one man out here bottom of the fourth he's going to make a pitching change and bring in goats there you see the change Bobby Castillo gives him a pat and power will lead the game a wide shot of the Astrodome Dave Gold's comes on sign is the free agent by the Dodgers the Minnesota Twins Pelican Rapids Minnesota Dave gulfs he inherits the situation of nolan ryan on its second base Poole is on at first base garner is the batter one man out bottom of the fourth Houston's out in front two to nothing [Music] so garner with the chance to add to the Houston lead here is two to nothing in the bottom of the fourth base runners at first and second garner walked his first time up stole a base single in the third inning but then was out trying to steal and Gulch in relief of power Gulch with a sinker slider looking for the DoublePlay right now he is really struggle since he came over from the twins of the American League goals as I recall the Dodgers went after the two phrases that you're down stano's was released and Gulf [Applause] Astros scored their two runs in the third inning there's a strike garner opening inning the base hit but then he was out trying to steal Scott was safe on an air Cruz double the rights and he's got the 3rd base runners at 2nd and 3rd Ashby single to center field I've been to two runs and that's how we stand right now with garner a chance to drive it another one with a one ball one strike count strike two over the inside corner says bruce fremming he was looking breaking ball you could see the way he's tied it into the ball he's looking for the slider away you guessed wrong but he didn't go after him sinker that really bar in on his hands he is one of the smartest players gone and I think you only admit for garner that he learned an awful lot from Tim Foley and I'm sure cooking 40 would turn that around and say the same about Gardner one two pitch inside tried to jam him so it's two balls in two strikes see the defense that kind of punch him up the middle land role playing a very shallow centerfield as you see so Nolan Ryan would have a difficult time scoring eye ball at the center field you know about ready keys arm in right field dusty Baker's as good as anybody in left defensively I hopper dat Guerrero he goes to second as one out there's no throw by Davey Lopes Guerrero's only played nine games of third base this season may have cost him so there are two outs Bryan moves the third Garner's out at first and here is Scott [Applause] Scot was called out on strikes safe on an errand scored in the third two men out [Applause] outside fall wine table Charlotte keeps his bullpen going down there he would like to win both have that his table meeting Fuhrer the right hand who's very hard throw who's joined Terry force to the left-hander side two balls and no strikes ghost on he might have had a strike on the outside corner he started would wouldn't like the win the second half for the reason that he would get the home-field advantage in the mini playoffs for the five games would be played in Chavez Ravine Los Angeles if he was both halves right back up the middle Gulch has it easy toss to Garvey so ghost does the job puts out the fire right here Nolan Ryan goes to the fifth the around ready key Darryl Thomas and Dave gulp scheduled in it Dodgers no runs no hits they've committed one ere the Astros 2 runs 6 hits no errors could be trouble in the right to a carnival Terry Crews there you get to set a line drive off the bat of Riddick you Terry Puhl riot through far as struck out seven has walked three now the Darryl Thomas Thomas walk to the third stolen base two runs the Astros half came in the third inning a two-run single by Alan Ashby the Scott and cruise aboard found off their own Thomas train late one strike Nolan Ryan lifetime against the Los Angeles Dodgers just one win at eight losses this is a 1630 lifetime against the Dodgers close to the breaking ball one ball one strike and one out Astros two Dodgers nothing we're in the fifth Joe fake don't think of a pitcher if you can that you caught who was close to a Nolan Ryan Rex morning Rex Barney that he had the curveball that over and it's good a fastball I think as good a fastball as anybody ever one ball two strikes one out Ryan pitch the Darryl Thomas you barely got a piece of the breaking guard high over to spilling out number two Gerald Thomas just protecting the plate two stops at the breaking pitch from going riot so now we will have a pitch hitter for the Dodgers it'll be Jack for the second baseman he was called up at the end of last year and filled in for Davey Lopes very well down the pennant stretch the kid named Sachs also a pretty good second baseman the Dodgers have up on their roster rosters were expanded the month of September one strike fastball for him this is the little guy you may have read about after the season last year driving home in Arizona got caught in the middle of a gun battle he and his wife almost taken them as hostages filed off Oh two with two hours Astros to God there's nothing that was sister Oh scary just private home after the season and he said it's like in the movie they couldn't believe it for kotti had a cool 346 this year in the minor leagues one home run at 58 runs batted in Nolan Ryan gets strikeout number eight so he will go into the sixth inning still with a no-hitter in his sight another booth al Rosen the president houston astros who replaced towel smith the very popular man Terry Foster's first pitch way inside moves crews back to nothing Astros lead see one thing l Rosen with his assistant Toni single there the Forester stats coming off the arm problems he's had year in and year out most made to put a big deal when he got Scott just before the strike and Phil Gardner just after the strike he could have really keyed this ballclub in and kept them out first place in the Western Division for the second season two balls no strikes to jail crews to one they Toni single one of the assistants came over from Milwaukee a couple of years ago has also been a big help to al Rosen slider so she can't believe it neither can Forester asking who's struggling where the pitch was but it goes to three balls one strike and there was a little guy sitting behind him took that shot Donald Davidson was in baseball all his life been a big help in rebuilding his club Brook the bat but it could be trouble ready Kilmer takes it on the big hop so it curls is odd he's been on base three times today I walked in the first inning a double in the third he scored a run and now a single to right field he can run now with drusen first base the Astros leading two to one Ashby will turn around to the right side after driving hold two runs two RBIs the only two runs in this ball game from the left side he may be bunny he's a better hitter left-handed than right he's hitting drill the left tail Dusty Baker back to the warning track he makes an outstanding ket's and crews will have to return to first Baker takes a sure extra-base hit on Alan Ashby Ashby if you notice one thing about him is his aggressiveness have to play doesn't seem to be guiding and ball hoping that it falls he is just swinging hard and Dusty Baker just right if the fingertips makes a great catch of this ball just does get it running towards that wall here's a look at it once more Joe I think when you look where Dusty Baker started from he was playing a very shallow left field for a lash pete has to be the man who was well the Toronto Blue Jays let go never thought he'd hit sure has improved here now that his art Howe with Cruz on first base one ball from Forester and I was paying particular attention if he would do its leg kick from the right-hand side like Ashley did from the left-hand side and he did so it means a lot to him in his timing Astros 2 Dodgers nothing were in the bottom of the fifth and one out one ball no strikes on how Cruz has told us just four bases this year d 11 attempts found out of play by Howe in 1980 Cruz had 36 stolen bases in 47 attempts I've got to believe something's wrong with his legs he's had some problems there you see the stolen base stats we just gave you supplied to us by our figure filbert Steve Dan's one ball one strike one out Astros with seven base hits the Dodgers have not gotten a hit off Nolan Ryan how has grounded out and flied out Cruz is going low pitch from [Applause] what a jump he had on course Forester saw him going but he couldn't change his delivery he saw him god and he couldn't move so shitty pack hands he doesn't help himself he loses at least two steps with that Tony Vorster didn't do a good job especially for a left-hander holding him on but so she didn't help himself on that at all by back handing that ball and then taking the extra step to throw it so Jose Cruz continues to have a good day a walk the double a run scored a single of stolen base right position for art Howe two balls one strike one out Astros two Dodgers nothing [Applause] check swing fouls it off count goes 2 & 2 Jose Cruz has been getting a pretty big lead Don leopard the third-base coach has been helping him out by watching the shortstop Darrell Thomas in the event of a pickoff play keeps edging a little bit further and farther off to our third base this Houston ball club likes to run not as much this year as last year there's your count how at the play bow-bow Thomas to his right he level own throw he pulls Garvey almost pulls Garvey off the bag but how would that gimpy leg couldn't beat it out nice play by Thomas he backhands the ball and really has to brace himself but he had the advantage of how running you really saw a good shot of Darryl Thomas looking the ball right into his glove that's the play right there for a shortstop going to the hole where the tendency is to try and hurry or throw the first face and you mighty plants the right foot gets the long overhand throw but you have a tendency to start pulling off the ball to throw to first base but Thomas did not give it a nice play now Joe Pickman will pinch-hit for Harry Spelvin nothing a right-handed hitter Spillman left Dobby a Tony for two two might be all over the Mets top of the seventh Pittsburgh three st. Louis two bottom of the seventh Cincinnati leading Atlanta two to nothing seven to three Cleveland over Boston bottom of the seventh and Milwaukee in Detroit tied one apiece top of the eighth what a ballgame that is over in Detroit Merle Harmon and Ron Luciano there we've got a two to nothing game here and Ryan working on a no-hitter Ryan has struck out eight he is not allowed to hit and we're in the bottom of the fifth Joe Pittman goes to this ball game with a 271 batting average he's got a runner in scoring position and Cruz at second base with two outs one strike from Terry Forrester [Music] outside 101 the Astros like the Yankees so many other teams you have that great the great bullpens are a difficult tough to come back on partly because the dome is so hard to get extra base hits and our home runs you've got a single guys there's crews at second but also you get a Santino to Smith and liccardi coming out of your bullpen it's bound to help you Joe Pittman one ball one strike the forestry slider inside pickoff attempt gets by Lopes sneaked behind him the throw from Scioscia off the glove of Lopes but Troost falls down and can't advance the third the difficult play for Lopes having to take a hard stroke to catch her on the ride is the cruise trying to scramble they can't make he got a bad start out of the blocks he needs those radial shoes but at wet weather he was spinning his wheels he had some ideas but just couldn't do it two balls one strike to count on Joe pitched Pittman pinch-hitting for Harry Spillman chopper going to be trouble [Applause] thoughts of coming home all the way from second phase control scheme over from the second base pot and backed up the played safe around if heater played spectator they would have been able to score where you'll see it when Guerrero goes over and out Guerrero doesn't get the ball but more importantly he screens Darryl Thomas and he doesn't get the ball and now their momentum carries him forward and the only man that could really make the play was Davey Lopes who very alertly came over from second base so it's an infield hit and it puts base runners at first and third and Reynolds is the banner so you've really got a likely Pedro Guerrero was placed in his third as you said earlier I'll aggressively plays here at shortstop you want that third baseman they get everything he can because had the ball been fielded cleanly by Darrell Thomas with Pittman Ronnie he was not going to throw out now with runners at first and third and two outs it'll be Craig Reynolds hitman is four stolen bases and eight attempts would be a bad play to send them he's thrown out down dog there Thomas we go to first base to Garvey so close two pitches out of it after 5:00 here the Astrodome Nolan Ryan will go to the sixth with a no-hitter he has eight strikeouts but right now there is some activity the game between Milwaukee in Detroit let's go there [Applause] and for you fans watching the exciting game in Houston we have one going on in Detroit on Merle Harmon with Ron Luciano the Tigers are coming to bat in the bottom of the 8th the Brewers have just scored 3 to take a four to one lead in Whittaker first ball hitting bounces to Cooper for up number one the score was tied at one going into the top of the eighth inning win with one out Robin Yount had an infield hit Cooper's single dissenter Ted Simmons hit what could have been a double play ball back to the pitcher Milt Wilcox but it slid off his glove the shortstop Alan Trammell made the play at first and the lead runs scored is out scored from third base then Ogilvie Ben Ogilvie hits the next pitch into the right-field seats for a 2-run homer and the Brewers have taken a four-to-one lead we're in the bottom of the eighth inning the winner of this game could be in first place in the Eastern Division of the American League if Cleveland holds a 6 to 3 lead over the Boston Red Sox and that game is now in the seventh inning Alan Trammell hitting 2 how and they're two down in the bottom of the 8th inning so that's what's happened here in is happening here in Detroit and for you fans watching the game in Houston let's go back to see what's happening with that no-hitter [Applause] all right Thank You Mel Ron Luciano back here the dome there's your scar used to to Los Angeles nothing davey lopes leading the sitting off to count the two balls and two strikes off Nolan Ryan who has eight strikeouts and allowed three walk he just blew it by mail goes down to the first base umpire Joe West so no one Ryan a strikeout number nine no runs no hits one error for the Dodgers the Astros two runs eight hits no errors now I'll be Kenny land roll who was called out on strikes in the first inning and walked in the third the Dodgers have left three base runners the Astros nine off the fence the breaking ball up high but it broke so sharply garner will fraud land rover two hours Nolan Ryan has now retired nine consecutive Dodgers last man to get on his land drove back into third the crowd is starting to feel a little bit of this because you could hear them applauding more and more each time that Ryan goes to two strikes for the first time on a routine ground down yard a little bit of a cheer two outs Dusty Baker he's grounded out twice the second base hit curveball from ride took a little bit off one strike now he is starting to gain a little bit of his control Joe let up on that curveball and got an easy strike another breaking ball strike two [Applause] two fishes curveballs Nolan ride was no balls and two strikes listen to the crowd [Applause] his spell [Applause] we will go [Applause] the strikes out 10 with a scar here Houston to Los Angeles nothing Nolan Ryan will lead off the bottom of the sixth for the Astros he got a standing ovation we keep the dugout to the on-deck circle and stepped in he has struck out Ted he has his no-hitter going as you know going into the seventh when he takes the mound he has a walk and the single in this ball game two strikes very quickly from Jerry Forster to Norlin : Ryan way outside wanted to [Applause] Nolan Ryan do today with ten strikeouts with a hundred and thirty fifth time his major-league career has struck out 10 or more he has four no-hitters tied with Sandy Koufax Knapp Department foster gets ride for out number one golden ride has never pitched a no-hitter the nationally [Applause] now it'll bring up Terry Puhl Houston Cincinnati Reds growl ball breaking ball from Forester Lopes Garvey two outs the Astros meet of the pick game and subkey hitting today's ballgame after the day only eight games remaining Junior Richard who has pitched two simulated ball games this year and Bill Virdon was kind of thrilled although he said at times he may not have his complete coordination back it's hard to get interesting hit against if I go back I mean by simulated games they have nine on the side and he gets three outs that's on the bench and they do as much as they can to make it the game just doesn't get out there and throw Phil Gardner one strike for the Forester T hours and good spirits he really is he was needling and everything else before last night's game and just does and Mike IVs another one that we've kind of forgotten about who had some problems was in good spirits Mike who went through a depression period and Houston collaborate patiently staying with him and he seems to be on a road to recovery one ball one strike the Phil garner Astros lead two to nothing good slider from Forster one ball two strikes big bass sitting the ballgame has come off the bat of a lash be single for two RBIs to a two to garner you got to be ready with dole Forstner out there as we look at nolan ryan on the bench for no-hitters he pitched two and 1973 versus Kansas City won against Detroit 74 he know it Minnesota 75 he no-hit Baltimore Forest her gets got Joe cares Jolla with Tony Kubek here at the Astrodome where the story is right in the center of the diamond Nolan Ryan he has struck out 10 he has walked three he is not allowed a hit one strikeout in the first Landro Guerrero and Scioscia in the second power and Lopes in the third Garvey and Scioscia in the fourth he got the pitcher in the fifth he got Lopes and Baker in the sixth Nolan Ryan has been in command Steve Garvey will lead it off time has caused some lights are on in the press box and the umpires are calling time Rian checking his defense they haven't been that busy Waveland seven Boston five top of the eighth the fans know that ran on something on there has not been a ball hit hard off Nolan Ryan in this ballgame Ron Redick he hit the semi line driving v it wasn't that hard either was before the looping line drive like go on and curveball fans are reacting and I'll tell you I think they'll pretty much tell you what's happening let's listen to them [Applause] one ball two strikes [Applause] now remains one ball two strikes st. Louis five Pittsburgh three top of the 8th Cincinnati leading Atlanta the eight to nothing home run by householder [Applause] garner has it [Applause] one out loving the road now for Nolan ride last baserunner was the land row in the third inning he walked Guerrero struck out flied to right strike one [Applause] [Music] there's no doubt that the hitters are going up there trying it the fastball is Guerrero just did because it looks like Ryan's curveball is all but untouchable at this point really snapping off and he has changed speeds on it started last Eddie purple fans they want everything he throws now one ball and one strike one out the count Reynolds has it whoa honey curveball once again show you how good nolan Ryan's curveball is that ball was a hanging curveball but because hitters cannot look for it he still gets the wheat ground ball to short rentals once again does not throw the ball well at first base continue to think he's got trouble with his arm Ryan keeps on going your association struck out in the second struck out in the fourth hit deep the right-center field [Applause] the end of seven Oh Henner we'll be right back Houston leading to the nothing here's the seventh-inning stretch bill verdant considers the mad and right field Terry Puhl his best outfield of baby his best all-around player here's a reason why as he preserves nolan Ryan's no-hitter with this great catch in right centerfield Terry Puhl here is Tony Scott to lead it off and it's strike one Poole is not made an error and he just saved a no-hitter for Nolan Ryan when he 8th inning will be facing Rena kee Thomas in the pitchers spot six outs away Nolan Ryan he leads by 2 to nothing is the score when the bottom of the seventh two strikes on Tony Scott popped up Lopes is going out Rena key coming in Lopes as I'll take it and he does the Dodgers get some action in their bullpen Dave Stewart young right-hander or they've got a good young bullpen Steve Hall from the left side Stewart to kid beaten fewer top need fewer right hander 23 4 years of age here's Cruz has had a real good day two for two walked once he scored irani is still in the base all one the story is Nolan Ryan six outs away two balls and no strikes now very fortunate in relief fastball misses three and Oh a while ago we had that shot of Nolan Ryan I I'm sure that there's still a lot of taboos in this game a lot of superstitions but I think most the time when you looked at Nolan Ryan moving around he was trying to talk to rentals and trying to talk to a couple of us a guy so they may want to eat quiet but didn't look like Noli wanted to be quiet three balls and one strike to count I'll tell you Tony he knows there's a no-hitter going on because if his own own teammates didn't tell him Forester will make to play himself because he's out the opposition will provide that service he has been through it many times before he has left the dugout now pretty either gone up in the runway or to the clubhouse jr. but he has four no-hitters as we told you Dolan Ryan he has seven one hitters so he's gone late in the ball games maybe as many times anybody in baseball history with this kind of situation two outs all one this is Ashby now we talked about the kick of the leg from the left side and from the right side he does the same thing as we look at the Dodger bench Lasorda in Monty basco one ball one strike used to bullpen man gadi platen zooming out nobody on bottom of the seventh inning Houston leading two to nothing outside you know I was thinking about asking batting said a big RBI ji Richard Nolan Ryan is somewhere behind them a wandering of guy like Ashby was catching Ryan he's at the bat right now he can't be thinking an awful lot about his city you think he's thinking about going out for next city this ball game he probably thought about it on a bench I would think right now he's concentrating pretty much on me but I think your point is well-taken to take something away from me you got to be worried about our thinking about what can I do can I give him that little extra help 3-1 pitch bullet Bob Leavy ager who is the protection man down there almost made himself a fine play maker fine catcher so she is just won the job Jerry grody is the number three catcher here Yeager Ferguson has gone over to California Angels perhaps Sandy Koufax looking in out in California I'm sure pulling for Nolan Ryan they're tied at four no-hitters each three balls two strikes two hours he walked in Ashby draws the base on balls brings up art how [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I'll bounced out flied to right and bouncing the shortstop in the fifties all for three - beyond first he's the big man in this game he drove in both Houston runs in the third inning when he singled a center field with Scott at third Cruz at second and there you see him Garvey behind him all one in the eighth inning Rena ki Thomas and the pitcher spot for the Dodgers [Music] now you've got guys like Reggie Smith Rick Monday available to pinch-hit veterans might see them next in it there's this strike one ball and one strike Jay Johnstone they are looking on what a story what determination curveball two balls in one strike but that'd be some pictures staff he was helping Oh and he's on the road two one pitched high hopper at Guerrero he's gonna go too low Oh horses on so that ends the inning Nolan Ryan seven and he's pitched no hits no runs he is struck out timmy is walked three last Maze Runner was bad bro that was it a third enemy to him base on balls Joe cares y'all with Tony Kubek near the Astrodome we welcome those of you watching the Detroit Milwaukee game Nolan Ryan going into the eighth that he has a no-hitter he's facing Ron Roenicke all on brenneke hit the ball hard his last time up a line drive the right fielder Poole Poole saved a no-hitter with a great catch off Sosa in the seven ball one strike Montreal beating the Mets 42 final Oh two and one Brian has now retired 13 in a row going back to land row when he walked was in the third I'll straight back two balls two strikes crowd reacting [Applause] scoreboard reaction [Applause] final score Milwaukee for Detroit 3 so Milwaukee goes in the first place by a half game they now our 27 and 19 Detroit 26 and 19 [Applause] popped up Bruce Reynolds Bruce [Applause] at Boston game Boston Cleveland Cleveland leading Boston seven to five to nine as we look at that play again party to the role now retired by Nolan ride as cruise waves rentals off Boston the American League East 26 and 18 [Applause] Pynchon has come out for the Dodgers curveball misses ball one Jay Johnstone will be the batter for Terry fourtner Hot Shot garner has it to us but maybe his hard hit balls been in this cave and garden very smartly you talked about smart a player he is as the pitch was on its way a breaking ball down and in he had taken two or three steps to his left playing the pitch in the situation which allowed him to get in that great job he really anticipated Wow [Music] Jay Johnstone the pinch hitter two outs here in the eighth Ryan will be closer and closer four outs away from a no-hitter one out away from any miss Anthony that's Rob reacting like one they'll tell you whether it's a baller strike [Applause] bouncing ball at garner should be easy because listen to the crowd [Applause] so it's on the bottom of the eighth to nothing Houston Nolan Ryan with the no-hitter and we'll be right back and I know you will Dave Stewart is a new pitcher walling is the batter and his two balls and no strikes walling who came on and Pittman was the pinch-hitter for Spillman leads it off here in the bottom of the eighth Stewart another one of the fine young pitchers the Dodgers have come up with he's four and three on a year and earned run average with 2.0 three he's worked some 40 innings he walked him [Applause] Frank Reynolds is a better the on deck batter is Nolan Ryan he'll get some ovation there you see him he's three outs away in the ninth inning he'll be facing Davey Lopes land row and maker and he can get him he'll break the record for no-hitters for three outs away and some 30 3129 paid here sitting in on this excitement blowing the baserunner Guerrero is in close at third strike there you see Guerrero back a couple steps now it's 2-2 nothing Houston leading a sport born in Oakland California [Applause] fouled out of play he was a Dodgers 16 selection in the June 1975 free agent drag two strikes the count walling it first it gets by Scioscia walling will go down in the second base let's see how they rule it it's a wild pitch like the fall he should have been able to handle we'll take another look at and he might have been crossed up and I've got to believe he is he's going out to talk to him we welcome those of you who've been watching that great Milwaukee Detroit game right here is a base runner at second base walling who just went down to second on the wild pitch he walked to open up his bottom of the eighth but the big story here is Nolan Ryan he is seeing the on-deck batter has a no-hitter going as we go into the ninth inning Reynolds doesn't get it one ball two strikes Nolan Ryan is the man of the hour he is struck out tenth then three balls hit hard off Ryan he is walked three the last baserunner was land row on the third we are in the bottom of the 8th with Houston threatening once again they scored their two runs in the third on the single by Ashby with Scott and cruise aboard fastball misses two balls and two strikes Dave Stewart in relief two balls two strikes Reynolds would try to pick up a bass if he makes an out which means you pull that ball if he came curveball misses three balls and two strikes [Applause] you should hear a tremendous ovation for Nolan Ryan when he comes up is the next batter [Applause] cool disgusting 3 2 pitch foul back in that third inning when the Astros scored garner opened with the single was out stealing Scott was safe on an air went the third on a double by Cruz made both scored when Ashby singled on the first pitch to center field and the rest of the story has been nolan ryan out of play count remains at three balls and two strikes [Applause] walling at second base [Applause] three balls two strikes nobody out all back once again Reynolds really battling Dave Stewart Dodger bench final scores st. Louis five in Pittsburgh three [Applause] final score Montreal for New York to the Delta Chicago rained out ninth-inning Cincinnati to Atlanta nothing San Francisco San Diego played tonight bouncing ball [Applause] so it's three to nothing here and it brings up Nolan Ryan who's talking to the third-base coach down Leopard almost a mandatory front situation here didn't know nothing else that get him off the bases listen to the crowd [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all one nobody out one run in rentals seem to serve that ball Barbies in tight first Wow [Applause] [Applause] one ball and one strike he takes another look at Leopard Ryan single and the fourth inning [Applause] one ball and two strikes [Applause] nobody out Reynolds at second one run in three nothing Astros [Applause] one of the garment beautifully and Tom Lasorda comes out of a Dodger dugout now with rentals on a third one man out in one run in [Applause] sort of talking it over with his young right-hander as davey lopes it has gotcha so she just final score Cleveland big Boston seven and five as we look at the man of the hour Nolan Ryan so Milwaukee is in first place Austin and Detroit both losing 26 and 19 the records a half they're going to put the left-hand batter Terry Puhl on and pitch to fill so Milwaukee with the win over the tribe would take up race is really tight losing the Cleveland seven and five final score Baltimore knew Yankees play tonight Chicago started White Sox Minnesota beat Texas 73 Tony Kubek into the field because we're sitting in on a dramatic moment here at the Astrodome Nolan Ryan is three outs away from a he has to face Lopes Landro and Baker in the ninth to get it [Applause] should he get it Tony OB Turner pitch out nothing going [Applause] [Music] Reynolds 1/3 told us at first too do I have the green light you gotta believe that he's got it stop foul territory near the stand socha difference it's tough to pick the ball up in this pasture dog I don't know how many queens are up there I'll tell you there's enough of them to make it a tough background two balls in one strike one man out bottom of the eighth Nashville's leading three to nothing line drive left there up base hit here comes Reynolds stopping at second is bullets border nothing [Applause] and here comes Tom Lasorda out of the dugout once again he's going to make a change he's got his young left-hander Steve ow loosening up down in the bullpen be a long inning for Nolan Ryan who's had a lot of time to think about what he's got to do so we've got a break in the action here it's four to nothing Houston Ryan has his no-hitter going we'll be right back after these messages steam howl is an identification as we look at the Nolan Ryan strikeout story this is the NBC television network [Applause] Scot jumps on the first pitch and fouls it off for strike one off Steve how Joe Kerala with Tony Kubek Tony is down behind home plate because we're sitting in on the nolan Ryan's story as the line score shows you the Dodgers no runs no hits the Houston bench it's four to nothing here we're in the bottom of the eighth inning how has come on and replacing Dave Stewart he faces Tony Scott with base runners at first and second right field brennick Lee is back tagging up his pull makes the catch he holds brenneke made a believer of pool last night he tried that playing he was out easily so there are two away here is Cruz fans react [Music] scheme how there you see the statistics on the young left-hander or in 32.7 600 average final scores Cincinnati to Atlanta nothing Montreal beat the Mets 4-2 to Philadelphia Chicago rained out st. Louis beat Pittsburgh 5 to 3 all finals line drive base hit no doubt about this one medic he charges hard run will score holding at second his garnered five [Applause] Bru's has had some afternoon he walked in the first meeting double that scored in the third he singled and stole a base in the fifth he bounced out the seventh e is simplified mrs. Ashby batting right-handed once again he's hit the ball hard inside ball one coming into the game Houston leading Cincinnati by a game and a half so should they win this game and they're well on their way it will keep pace and another game is off the calendar which certainly hurt Cincinnati it's away from Sochi that goes burner - wild pictures let's see how they rule this one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it looked like he started to backhand the ball and change the midstream and hit right off his heel so Scioscia gets a pass ball [Applause] ace runners at second and third well hit the left field bankers going back back has room makes the catch so that ends the inning and it sets up the ninth where Nolan Ryan has Davey Lopes Kenny Landrum and Dusty Baker and there's the man of the hour and the fans are starting to react already as Nolan Ryan sets out to try to get the last three outs to get his no-hitter he's tied with Sandy Koufax right now four apiece and we'll be right back Tom Lasorda is going to his bench and he laughs Reggie Smith heading for Dave Lopes as Nolan Ryan goes out here in the ninth-inning to try to nail down to three officer getting a no-hitter even before the inning starts this week's NBC Miller High Life player of the game is Nolan Ryan and Miller High Life is happy presented check for $1000 in the name of : Ryan to the Special Olympics here we go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] one ball one strike one out two outs away [Applause] [Applause] three balls one strike one up [Applause] many would consider this the toughest man in the lineup to get out Dusty Baker [Applause] the catcher was asking them fremming to ask the first base umpire Joe West when it was a swinging striking motion no it was not two balls no strikes [Applause] pressure filming on Ryan [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well you can see nolan Ryan's with tony kubek we'll be right back talked to the man who pitched a no-hitter right after these messages story here in the astrodome is Nolan bride a no-hitter as the Astros beat the Dodgers 5 to nothing and let's go to Tony Kubek I jump Noli right now standing very patiently waiting to us right now Jerry dog and the Dodgers are doing an interview but we're going to hear part of this conversation with Bill arrived did you feel the ball and associate hit in the seventh and he might find the gap well when he hit it I thought was hit hard enough I knew it wasn't out in him was Terry speed out there I really felt like he had a good shot at catching yeah and I got in on him but he hit it down the line good Tony was telling me that the fastest basketball you had today was 97 miles per hour well I really didn't feel like I had exceptionally good velocity I think that the biggest thing I was able to get ahead when the curve ball I move the ball in and out a lot Ross let me interject for a Ross part of the Dodger broadcasting crews but interviewing Nolan Ryan is waited so patiently just a reaction from you Sandy Koufax has four no-hitters as you approached it with number five and a reaction to you at when you threw that last pitch well it don't it was hard to believe that I finally accomplished it because I guess that there's one thing I wanted to do in my career was pitch at 15 since I've had a shot at it and I've had a shot at it for a long time and at my age I was really starting to think that I probably wouldn't get it because I've gotten in the late innings before Oh in place this year I went into the seventh with no-hitter going and I just didn't seem to have a stamina that I used to have to put somebody away and I think that they felt stronger I didn't strike a lot of people out and later inning but I tried to be a little finer I didn't I didn't challenge as many guys in the late innings of the head earlier no I want to talk about two specific guys Bill Burton talked to us before the ballgame at he said that mal Wright had worked with you so hard and you worked so hard to control the curveball the comment on male rights or Crick she goes at also your catcher Alan Lasky who caught a beautiful ball game today Alan caught a great game he was thinking right along with me we didn't shake much at all we threw a couple changeup they weren't working so we just candid and oh my curveball males work with me and I really think that the key to me is getting my breaking ball over you can't win with one you can't shut people out with one fish because these guys it's timing their fastball hitters it doesn't matter how good a fastball you have but if you have that breaking ball in there where they have to think about that and you can put that thought in your mind then you get the basketball by nobody the superstition that goes along sometimes and maybe it's all hat pitching a no-hitter you probably been on the mile and more than any pitcher in history of baseball when you've gone late to ball game with a no-hitter staring you in the face what was going on in the bench well nobody really said anything to me and then after the end of the 8th Don Sutton asked me about superstitions I said know anything to put them away would you and so you know basically it's the same deal guys leave you alone last superstition in baseball and it just worked out where I was I was just fortunate to have enough stuff to go ahead and do it when you left the bullpen before the ball game let me let you introduce this young lady Noli my mother this is Ryan is this have you seen all of it and all these other no-hitters I know no Lee's wife Ruth Lee came down to the field game a big hug and kiss put your grandchildren state alone they did not see this no-hitter today not only when you left left that mounted you think I know it's tough down the bullpen before the game that I never really know before the game and I say I was struggling with my delivery a little today I really didn't feel like my fastball what it should be and I got my hand early in the game on some hitters and with these guys you really don't have luxury of doing it I'm gonna call in your catcher and I hope you could stand around for a while Alan LSP it was marvelous where were you sitting this is Ryan oh hey thank you so much for stopping by Nolan Ryan our congratulations and thank you for signing my scorecard congratulations to you we're gonna be back good luck to the rest of us an important game not only for the middle hitter today but what it means to your ballclub and I think you never lost sight of that either thank you thank you don't read game for us lowly our thanks to you we'll talk to Alan Ashby when we come back right now let's go back to Joe ok Tony so the Astros 5 to nothing and Nolan Ryan becomes the first pitcher in Major League history to throw five career all headers
