Army Nurse Corps retired will make the opening remarks Colonel Joseph thank you Mr chairman [Music] it has long been the contention of those who oppose women in the draft that should women be captured they would break well the fact is women have been prisoners of War and their experiences are a testimony to their strength endurance and courage 104 Army and Navy nurses stationed on the Philippines were incarcerated by the Japanese between 1942 and 1945. yet their courage has been virtually invisible to the public and has gone unrecognized by the military in December of 1941 I was stationed at Camp Pershing on the island of Luzon in the Philippines located near the resort town of Rosario the camp was used for what today is called RNR arrest and relaxation it was Paradise okay let's get to would have done under the same circumstances you're being much too hard on yourself I was scared to death the way you ran out from under that truck I never would have known I had no choice I'm claustrophobic what you've done if they assigned you to Tunnel Hospital in Corregidor did no I got out of it I said I'd kill myself first it's a wonder they didn't ship you home on a section 8. send contraction banana leaves for beds gasoline cans for stoves some of the girls came down with malaria but somehow morale stayed High then in March the bottom fell out MacArthur had been ordered to Australia president of the United States [Applause] for the purpose as I was on organizing the American offensive against Japan a primary objective of which is the relief of the Philippines I came through and I shall return you have been listening to an address by General Douglas MacArthur we now return you I knew it it's gone to get reinforcements I don't believe it we'll believe it the rats are leaving the ship and the king rat just got off first you're out of line Nolan I know General MacArthur he would never have left if he wasn't ordered out I bet he'll be back before we know it why from corrigador Haggard and drawn she'd finally run out of lipstick [Music] following a poor spring harvest the camp was put on Half rations starvation ran rampant as deaths from dry berry berry reached epidemic proportions with no medical supplies of any consequence animal protein became our only chance for survival once again Nakayama came to the rescue [Music] [Applause] you getting for life hundreds of years it should be for your sons there won't be any if you don't take it it'll hang on the wall of a stranger's house would lie about how he won it in battle summarize sword failed to survive the ordeal for that we were awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry the Bronze Star without the V for battle I would like to ask the committee were we not valorous were those who risked everything to preserve life any less courageous than those that carried a weapon how does one measure courage I can only speak from my own experience you measure against yourself and that can
