on today's episode i'm going to talk about a brand that is quite a mystery in the pedal market we're going to answer what is a lan device or at least we're going to try yeah that's what i got for you today just hang on [Music] land devices is a newish pedal company that came onto the scene in the last few years and they are cloaked in riddles and deep deep mystery it's a little bit maddening because they won't do any public interviews nobody knows where they're from we don't even know if it's a group of people some weird syndicate a couple people are one person and this has driven me crazy for long enough so i got to work and with a little bit of bribery some dark web hacking and light to medium blackmail i was able to get an official statement from land i risk my life for this like i do every day on this show and i hope you appreciate it i believe it was like maybe mid 2017 i was just getting into pedals and i couldn't afford anything um particularly like vintage fuzz circuits so i just kind of started building them and then all my diy pedals just kind of look like well like bare metal kind of whatever so i decided to see if i could just like design something for myself that's kind of how i started i just designed a pedal for myself picked my favorite circuit which was the percolator threw it on reverb and then jim from reverb messaged me and said well i had to buy this and then he was like we're gonna do like a roll out with andy or something and then just kind of like snowball like oh i'm gonna buy this and then he was like well we're just gonna do a run and i was like okay i'm not even like a real company right after the andy demo launched premier guitar emailed me the next day and then it just i don't know i just like well i was like i'll make another 20 and then the first land isis pedal that i ever saw was the first release the hp2 and from the moment i saw it i bought it it's beautiful the choices of knobs the colors the graphics the simplicity it was all inspiring and one of the most perfectly put together pedals aesthetically i've ever seen i just really like utilitarian stuff and i um kind of really like all that wrong stuff back in the day from geiger ross and then i really like this utilitarian aesthetic of like military stuff so i just kind of combined them but i also really like fun looking things that are like not super serious so it's some sort of weird i don't know i'm a big fan of olive drab let's start out with that first petal they ever made the hp2 and let's talk about it i have the green version which is a beautiful olive drab one of the finest colors ever made in the color spectrum i also have a nice white edition i think it's limited i think it's special i think every petal is special but for sure this one is it is a very very unique circuit that is based around one of the most rare petals on the face of the earth and the galaxy it is the interfax harmonic percolator hp1 this is of steve albini fame who's a famous producer this is his favorite distortion box they're really hard to find so land put this together and it's a home run let's check it out [Music] baby [Music] [Music] the second pedal that land released was the ep5 it's a very very useful pedal and it is a more gooder type circuit meaning it's the kind of thing that i would turn on and leave on all the time but you can use it as a preamp boost engaging it in front of drives fuzzes or whatever or hitting your tube amp and creating saturation the circuit inside emulates the pre-amp of an echoplex ep echoplex hence the name and it's much smaller than this like if you're gonna shove this in a gig bag you have some pretty big problems so yeah they did a good job but they discontinued this now that's kind of strange they didn't make it for long made a few discontinued it almost near not quite immediately there's a lot of rumors about why there's a lot of rumors about how the circuit's actually made if there's some unobtainium type parts in it if it has some kind of space technology involved i don't know because we really don't know who these people or persons or person are is i don't know it's really confusing but they did re-release it this time without a footswitch they're telling us we can't turn it off and you know what i'm okay with that as a button for the switch at this point we just do what they say [Music] so the third petal that land put out is probably the most rare i had a hard time finding this and i want to be honest in my research digging diving scrounging everywhere one just showed up now that's a little confusing because there's something interesting about this one it has a very small hole here there's no explanation to that hole i can't find it in any photography anywhere and i don't know where this actually came from it did not have a return address should i be concerned about this pedal what's in the pedal if it is actually the pedal i was searching for if it's a disguised device with some sort of peephole camera that's watching me now and as i sleep because i do sleep in a room full of pedals facing me it's totally normal i don't know but back to the pedal at hand it is the land farm no masters fuzz and it's based off the selmer buzz tone from the 1960s summer was a music shop on charring cross road that's in london it was next to makari's orange jennings vox really cool spot and i don't have this pedal it's one of the only vintage fuzz pedals i've never been able to find and i'm perfectly fine i don't need it i don't have to have it [Music] whatever we're gonna play this it's a collaborative between farm pedals and land devices hence land farm go check out farm they have some really cool stuff uh yeah a lot of mystery here just uh hold on to your horses cause we're gonna jam on this [Music] this [Music] oh and supposedly this selmerbustome that i don't have is the circuit that sid barrett used on the original pink floyd records the ones way back in the day i don't know if that's true i don't know if a lot of things are true because everything's a mystery that being said let's move on the next release from lan devices is not a pedal it is a device it's called the mixer and it's just beautiful look at it tons of colored knobs switches it is essentially a very very useful portable high quality mixer that you can use for all kinds of applications now you can plug microphones guitars and things and mix them into one or two channels there's pan and level instrument line level you can do a lot of things with this but i'm going to do something really cool and noteworthy and the thing that i think a lot of you might want to play with and discover for yourself so buy one of these and do this take the first quality splitter that land also makes which is simply one in three out or three in one out that's really simply saying you can plug a guitar in here split it out three ways plug three guitars in go out to one way now i'm gonna put that at the front and i'm gonna plug my guitar in here and i'm gonna go out of each one of these into an individual boss pedal i have the digital reverb delay i have a harmonist and i have the good old faithful metal zone and we're going to put them in parallel they're not going to go one after the other so they won't touch each other they'll be in complete parallel universes of sound that re-emerge inside the mixer with their own channel which has a volume so you'll see me turning some controls this will be reverb octave pitch and then the metal zone and i can put them in parallel perfectly over each other the way that i want it's super cool and super unique you're gonna like it [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] the last and newest release from land devices is the domino now i've played this before on the show but i want to talk about something that's not so obvious to the casual guitar player's eye and little brain it is the fact that there are eight dots on this pedal i want to bring up the number eight and a certain conspiracy believed about this crew people persons or person who is land or land devices what does this represent we see an l an a an n and a d and then on the other side we see nothing in those dots so there is a very strong belief and rumor that land is an organization of secretive builders eight people one two three four five six seven eight but currently only four and that they're looking to fill the other four spots sometime in the future i've heard this on various dark web forums i actually heard about this in a laundromat locally it was very awkward i don't know if it's true but i want to believe it and because i want to believe it i think it's true it's based around the dan armstrong green ringer it's already been on an episode called do they need knobs and you know i promised i would never put knobs on this because it doesn't need it it's totally stupid to think this needs knobs i will never put knobs on it ever some pedals are fine like they are oh my gosh that was weird that was weird [Music] [Applause] [Music] land i want you to know whoever you are whatever you are and wherever you're actually located that i'm really thankful for your pedals the aesthetic choices are absolutely stunning your circuits are spectacular your build quality is through the roof and i just need you to know that if you ever choose to reveal yourself to the public i'll keep it a secret in my heart i'm a fan let's go to record time today's record time is brought to you from september 21st 1993 nirvana's in utero yeah i look the date up it's kind of significant it's my wedding anniversary as well not 93 that would make me way older than i actually am i'm not going to get into that let's talk about this record it is nirvana's follow-up to nevermind that is a really tough job but i think this record makes a really important statement it's fantastic it's the evolution of the band and just some really great songs steve albini produced it he says he recorded it if you know anything about him you'll understand that statement and you know the harmonic percolator it's kind of his jive so that's the connection here if you've never heard this go check it out there is this beautiful grunge pop thing that nirvana did so well but more than ever on this record you can hear like beatles poppy 60s chord progressions as the underlying framework of some of these songs it's really fascinating if you listen to it closely uh if you've never heard it please do that if you know this record well let's talk about it in the comments and let's talk about your favorite nirvana record and why it is your favorite and if you don't like nirvana you don't have to type anything but you could say like i don't like nirvana and then we'll read it and we'll know you don't like nirvana and you'll feel good about that i guess so let's let's move on thanks so much for watching this episode i hope you enjoyed it i hope that now we have some information as to what is a land device i think we've covered some ground i've made a great personal sacrifice here while you've done absolutely nothing and i think that's fine i'm okay with that i can i can live with that choice i made that choice for you so if you like this episode hit like subscribe to the channel click the bell icon you're going to get notifications
