What the HELL is Hedgehogs? (A Sonic Ripoff)

[Music] Hey look another movie request oh no where's that thing go why do you all do this to me this one was very much so by popular demand I can only imagine because this abomination is coming out later this year oh don't you worry I got plans for you but seeing this wannabe Hedgehog spindash around really caught my attention so let's check out not Sonic the Hedgehog trademarked ok so who's responsible for this movie well I got it narrowed down to two things youtubers and China I'm not wrong the studio's behind the production of hedgehogs include days view animation and Beijing sky will Entertainment Co Botha Chinese based companies and produce hedgehogs back in 2016 from what I can tell days view did most of the animation for the film this was also their first movie for SkyWheel they've worked at a number of movies before but the majority of them are live-action so this is somewhat new territory for them it seems that China has been on a path of growth lately for the animation industry like they've been pumping a lot of money into that market so we're starting to see the fruits of their labor too bad this one was rotten not yours something that caught my eye about the film was the voice cast and how some of the characters were voiced by youtubers you got Jim McAllister as the main girl character and then Anthony from Smosh as the main character himself now there's nothing wrong with youtubers doing voice roles but these two did a pretty bad job not terrible but nowhere near good also Chevy Chase was in the movie and so was the guy who is Napoleon Dynamite seriously what is this cast all right so let's check out the movie oh don't you dare tease me with that that actually looks good don't leave put on it's gone well maybe the CGI will look good [Music] no so things start off with a certain blue hedgehog pretty impressive fellas just off the bat it looks and sounds bad like the voice acting sounds condescending hi my name is Bobby and I am a hedgehog I live in this village of other hedgehogs and we eat yummy fruit like that it sounds like that I mean that's actually kind of adorable they try so dang hard but they just never every word so our main character not Sonic or as we'll call him from this point on Bobby is a reckless Hedgehog who likes to show off and use a Spin Dash hmm maybe he's more like Sonic than I thought also what's up with their hands it's like they had their Hedgehog hands removed and replaced with human hands look in their teeth - what's up with hedgehogs and having uncanny valley teeth were then introduced to this antagonist creature thing yeah honest to god I have no idea what he's supposed to be maybe he's a badger I don't know Sonic the [ __ ] then throws down with the other [ __ ] as he throw around a bunch of edgy insults but I wish like a fork over a mint I could smell your breath from here what ensues is one of the most overly edited fight sequences I've ever seen the movie so far has done a terrible job of making me like or care about this character at this point I wouldn't even be upset if he died oh sweet movies over you woke up see I'm glad we did he hit him he's alive ah crap he lived so he gets rescued by this fat pigeon that's voice by the same guy who is Napoleon Dynamite there's also this weird running theme in the movie of demonic and heavenly imagery and I don't know why they never explain it he just has these random visions so guess what Bobby has amnesia of course and for some reason Hubert the pigeon thinks that Bobby's a pigeon and hits him Bobby's character is reset and gets a new identity that's a little bit better than the first one Hubert tries to teach Bobby how to be a pigeon with a stupid montage food is fantastic that is why I love him Bobby is having a hard time becoming a bird and gets frustrated he can't comprehend why he can't fly but I was born to fly Hubert was it I Hubert then tries to figure it out himself by comparing Bobby to other spiky things it would have been hilarious if he just kept dropping things stuff and stuff and stuff and stuff Bobby then has the bright idea of channeling his inner Icarus and made his own wings that work so there's this strange plot point in the movie about this light that Bobby is infatuated with I think he believes it's a yummy fruit and it will lead him home I don't know in the land of Mordor and out of nowhere Hubert and Bobby get caught by a random trapper and then gets thrown into the back of a truck I love how this guy caught a flying hedgehog and didn't even question it Oh another one throw it into the truck we then meet this animal rights activist kid who's trying to free the animals free those animals just do him a job wish him flower or get him next time oh look it's the other [ __ ] and he gets into a fight with Bobby and Hubert hey stop hey stop for now on whenever the movie does something stupid I'll use this clip the Badger thing then takes off and Hubert and Bobby find themselves locked up and some kennel it's stinky in here hey am i a stupid Hedgehog this movie's giving me too much to work with I'm gonna have to save this one for the Sonic movie so Bobby and Hubert escape and decide to go to the tower light thing yeah I don't know yeah this seam was stolen from Toy Story 2 so Hubert's about to get iced but gets saved by a random bird check and guess what her name is [Music] oh my god let me be free of this curse we then discovered this plot point that the citizens of China think that the animals are causing a disease I guess it explains why all of the animals are being captured Bobby then gets separated from Hubert and runs into this guy again [Music] that was creepy the two then get into a fight and Bobby starts to remember that he's a hedgehog but then he gets captured by the nature kid we didn't find Bobby in some laboratory where things get really weird stop nature guy then gives Bobby a tracker and takes him to some company Oh check it it's the same one with the ball what are the odds we then need iron man [Music] nature guide tells the boss dude that Bobby has a tracker boss dude is like cool go away now it's time to do some evil [ __ ] but the nature kid freaks out and runs away with Bobby and out of place X joke why not we didn't have this face-off between Bobby and the minions on the skyscraper it's really hilarious because the music in the movie just stops and it makes the scene really eerie Huber conveniently comes to the rescue and flies Bobby down towards this forest stadium gotta love these girl characters oh how do I know that they're girls well have you look at their lipstick and their eyelashes and their pink nails so Bobby and Hubert run into this guy again and he somehow swallows Bobby's tracker so the stadium their ad is abandoned and a bunch of other hedgehogs live there Bobby things he's back at his old home and starts to look around for his friends we're here remember I can't believe I'm back it's yummy fruit Melton they find themselves underground and meet a new village of hedgehogs that really don't care for them hey everyone great to see you all again I don't know you there she is yeah that's it that's the love interest right there you can tell cuz she's pink but your spines down now it's not a big deal we all do it so yeah this village of hedgehogs believe in not using their spikes I don't know why but it's against their law and they can somehow make their spikes go flaccid yeah really I don't know this movie is confusing the hell out of me isn't this yummy fruit Mountain its Coliseum forest looks like somebody's a little lost whoa hold on I know that voice woman how about you make yourself useful and fetch me my leg behold the only good voice actor in the movie so bobbing rows start to hang out and bond with each other Bobby being the hotshot that he is starts to show off and uses spikes to gather fruit which is as you may have guessed against the rules and you gotta love the anime sounds they made shut the [ __ ] up you dumb hedgehogs I love this one part cuz Bobby tells ro is to close her eyes and that he'll bring her to the top of the tree but for some reason her body goes limp so it looks like he's tossing around her lifeless corpse [Music] so Bobby has a brain blast and remembers his past and the process Rose falls off the tree and breaks her phone arm they then get scolded by Master Sifu from Kung Fu Panda and Bobby gets called out for using his spikes my name is Bobby and I'm a hedgehog damn it Bobby this just ain't right Bobby being the [ __ ] that he is puts the entire clan on blast for not using their spines they then banish his ass from the village you are no longer welcome here now go and never return to our village and here we go folks the one part of the movie that threw me for a complete loop so Bobby is soaking about Rose and how she didn't leave her home to join him but my good friend Hubert here brings down the hammer she wanted to come with me the last thing I expected was a truth bomb from Hubert seriously he's my favorite character now Bobby was talking like a stalker and Hubert wasn't gonna have it did I remind you that this is all your fault you just had to be you I have the right to try and be happy that's not wrong that is super selfish you don't care about anyone else I'm done we then get this song sequence as Bobby soaks around the stadium and runs in to guess who this guy again but this time Bobby's done talking and beats the hell out of the guy we then get this sappy story of why the Badger is a mean guy it was them they made me this way so yeah these two are friends now and they team up to stop the humans from entering the stadium search the area find them look at this guy's face note so from what I understand these guys want to eliminate all the animals and drive them out of the stadium because of money but all the animals in the stadium decide to team up and fight back even the hedgehogs agree to use their spines throw those spines up yes everyone else too so begins this dumb battle scene that is just all over the place I like how this one bad guy just gets destroyed [Music] why are we still here just suffer but oh no the iron man shows up with a backhoe and the animals get trashed Nature Boy then shows up and tells Iron Man that the animals aren't diseased but the bad guy dude does not give a rap he just wants to tear things down and get money yeah somehow why are you doing this the virus isn't their fault Bobby then throws down with Iron Man and gets his ass kicked check it out guys it's it's in-game with Iron Man fighting sonic the hedgehog [Music] Bobby takes another crack at fighting the bad guy and gets his ass kicked again like the boss dude goes ham with his guns but Bobby gets right back up and sees the Grim Reaper with that bobby unleashes his secret weapon and go super saiyan with a sonic drill to pierce the heavens so yeah the bad guys are defeated we think that Bobby's dead but he's actually fine you know that old hero trope the city then discovers that the animals are fine all along and this disease that was plaguing them has a cure now Wow that's convenient so we're now at the end of the film all the animals find new homes the disease is gone and bobbing rose head back to Bobby's old village but of course we got to get one more WTF moment and it comes in the form of Rosa's overprotective father one last thing though that's right guys just let your parents put a tracker on you that's not creepy at all at the end of the credits though you see that the tracker was left behind so at least Rose escaped that also the movie is over thank God hey alright let's go over my five points first the story this film felt disjointed and was all over the place the setting kept changing and with it the flow of the story we go from hotshot sonic boy to an amnesia story to us save the wrecks in their plot the writers couldn't make up their mind with what was going on and the characters were equally as confusing Bobby was insanely unlikable at the start but got a little bit better as the movie went on be that as it may I saw Bobby has an emotional impulsive jackass who only cared about what he desired Hubert came around though he was the dumb comic relief character throughout the majority of the film but out of no where he started to make sense like the truth bomb scene hold a 180 for the guy you are in the presence of the legendary Hubert everybody else was pretty bad Rose was just the girl II love interest the villain was just moneybags evil guy again the best character was Hubert and that legitimately blows my mind I'm going back to get her next the voice acting it came across as amateur to me the only good voice actor was do and that was it that's not true do they remind you that you're going to die a death even more horrific than your pathetic grandfather's screw this bastard after that there's the dialogue awkward that's the word I would use a describe it the pacing would shift dramatically and the characters interactions with it it would go from ultra silly to straight-up confusing little angel baby then there's the editing this film had a hard-on for cuts during action sequences it was all over the place and would change almost every second there was also this weird obsession with zooming in on the faces of characters I know that they were going for something dramatic but really it just looks stupid and finally the animation I actually went into this film with a lot of optimism yeah it looked a bit rough but maybe they could pull it off my verdict no for what it's worth the characters don't look awful I'm not crazy about their designs but the move bends and the faces weren't absolute trash that being said I hated the hands and the teeth of the hedgehogs that bothered me throughout the entire film now I'm kind of conflicted over the textures and the fur effects like I want to like it but something is holding me back also why does Bobby spikes look like sharpen colored pencils I couldn't get that out of my head but I think the ultimate thing that gets me is how this movie feels like a combination of a bunch of other properties ratatouille vault Monsters Inc Iron Man over the hedge and of course Sonic the Hedgehog that's no good so how would I improve the movie well first off the script needs serious work I'm okay with uh I lost my memory who am i but it really needs a different direction start off with Bobby being a complete jerk to his village he then gets lost and finds himself in the city without his memory while there he goes through trials and tribulations that help him grow as a better person yet did Hedgehog then he regains his memory and also finds out that his home is in trouble he then goes back gains the respect of his village and defends his home the end at least by doing that Bobby has a better arc and things are less confusing like why did we need a new village of hedgehogs that was unnecessary on top of that find some better voice actors and chill out with the cuts while editing boom you got yourself a solid movie nothing worthy of a theatrical release but good enough for streaming services they're done you're welcome as much as I criticize this film I do hope to see more animated movies from China just like India with roadside Romeo it's a new venue for the animation industry I want to see what kind of stories they come up with and the visuals that go along with them hedgehogs felt more like a generic low-budget movie that barely had any cultural influence on it but maybe these studios can turn that around and make some good movies take it from me America already has it's bad Hedgehog movie oh please be good please be good please be good what's wrong with his teeth [Music]
