Using Callouts in a Video with DaVinci Resolve

in this video I'm going to show you how to create numerous call outs in a video in DaVinci Resolve that track with the video itself using plan your trackers so let's get started here so this is a video clip drone video clip of downtown Columbus Ohio and as you can see it's really just looking up at the skyline or at the downtown area so let's place a area where we want to actually have these callouts I want to clip this video so that and then put the clouds in that clipped area so let's start it off at maybe maybe six inches six uh maybe six uh seconds in I'll just cut it right there make sure the thing is on okay and let's make it about maybe when we say six if I make it about that long um let's make it about maybe 15 seconds long for example like you can do the math from here to here if you wanted to you can also another way of doing it is to do it this way so I pick on the selection tool here if I grab it this right here I can say okay that's I can say I want to make it this maybe 16 seconds long right there right um so a couple ways you can do it um I'll just take it right there so see the seconds long I'll set the the actual head right there and then I will grab this and pull this back here and then I'll cut it right here a couple ways you can a lot of ways you can do it but that's one way you can do it this sometimes it makes things easier so the clip's going to be within this area right here the call outs are going to be in this area right here and it'll be four call outs one for two buildings uh one is the levec tower one is the Huntington Center and then there's a park here called um Patel River Riverfront Park and then the bridge is called Discovery Bridge so let's just within this area pick on this property cut and then go to your Fusion tab and here's your in and out for your Fusion tab we need to place a a node for each of the four call outs and from here do a control space bar and type in the word plan and then linear tracker will come up hit add so this is a Pioneer Tracker right here once you have it um on your on your canvas unselect it and let's go up here under the settings and change tracker to hybrid Point area and also perspective to translation and then we're going to do is we're going to take this one here and do a control do a copy and then unselect it and do a control V or paste four three or three times so unselect it again unselect it again so one for each call out replacing four call outs and after that move these trackers in this timeline for for me to In and Out by grabbing it and holding your shift button and you'll see the line turn blue and let let go your curse your mouse cursor and that'll do it right there your mouse button I should say so hold shift in let go your left Mouse button each one of these okay next thing you need to do is we need to place what we're going to track so I'm going to put the first tracker here what am I going to track with this tracker so as I mentioned there are four things first one is going to be the levec tower which is this white building right here and I'm going to do a control and using my middle middle wheel of my mouse to zoom in and I'm going to oh actually First Step you have to do is if we do anything else which is something that's easy to forget is go to the front of the um playhead by hitting this button here 's the back of the playhead here's the front of the playhead make sure that they're at the front of the playhead then I'll use my control middle Mouse wheel and I'll zoom in and I want to place my first tracker so that I'm tracking these little Windows right here so I'm going to draw a shape around here the track and then I'll hit Ctrl F to zoom back out again you don't have to do that but I like to do it anyway um so we're at the beginning of the playhead next thing you need to do is you need to set the reference time so hit hit the set button and that'll set it to 723 which matches the beginning of your playhead once you do that you hit this button here called track to end and it will track from from the start of that playhead to the end of the playhead of the area you have in that shape because that finished next we need to do the same thing for our next one so I put the next tracker and next thing I'm going to track is a Huntington Center building which is shaped like an H go ahead alt middle Mouse wheel and I'll find some place that I need to that I can track with that so I control its middle Mouse no mouse wheel in this case I see a box here that I I can track so again the first thing you have to do is go back to the beginning of the playhead it's very important every time you do it because it's very easy to forget and then I'll go here and I'll draw a box around this area here so I know it's going to it's in their frame the whole time I'll do a control F to zoom out again and I'll hit the set button the reference time here I still set to zero so I hit the set button so it goes to the playhead beginning and then I can then I can also just click on that track to end is that finished so next we're going if it actually doesn't finish for some reason that means it couldn't track what you've selected it might actually stop before it finishes but so far everything's finished the way it should the third one we're going to track something in this Park area and I'm going to zoom in oh again good beginning of the playhead and then zoom in very important part I'm going to track this area right here which is fairly unique into control F go out again hit the set button here so it's 723 again match our playhead and then I'm going to hit the tracked end again the finished last thing we're going to attract is the bridge so pick the last tracker here and let's zoom in on this bridge here oh first let's make sure we're at the beginning of the playhead and we are okay so let's zoom in on the bridge this can be a tricky one because there's so much going on and I've had it screw up a few times so I'm going to make sure that I try to pick something we can track without it messing up too much but let's see so with being a playhead let's hit set here and we're going to try to track this guy right here let's see if this will work control F to go beta out again and so far everything looks good and it's good for tracking it because that finished successfully let's get this guy here and so now everything's tracked the next step is to convert these into what's called transforms so we have to do is you have to pick each one one at a time and click on create Pioneer transform and then I'll put this in from top of here I'll put the next one click this button again and do it for each one of these trackers these transforms have all the same information that's in the planar trackers as far as the obviously tracking is just the fact that the use callouts we need to use these transforms so let's delete these trackers now delete key and what we're going to do is we're going to put these in the time this in the media in and out instead so I want to grab the N here and put it here at the end of there and it'll create a merge one in between them grab the end here and put it here and do the same for these other two so it creates those merge merge nodes okay and next thing you need to do is we need to create the actual call outs so I'll go up a little bit here and I want to go to templates edit titles and these are all your all your titles are the one we care about are is called call out so it's right here so I'm going to drag this one over here above this transform before we do anything else I'm going to make a couple changes the first one is going to be the size I'm going to make this one .04 I'm going to um color it that is right now is white which is fine but the the actual line for the clouds gray let me make this white as well and this point Corners means that there's going to be a diamond shaped end to the call out I wanted to be a circle so I'm going to change this to one once I do that I'm going to place this guy here and I'll place in here and there's this little circle here and here's a text that's shown here and we have to do is we know this quad here is for the the back Tower so this has to go to where we have a Tracker so I'm gonna zoom in on here zoom in up here and I'm going to put this in the middle of that so it tracks that and then let's see here I need to control F to go back and for now I'm just going to put the text somewhere where I can just find it I'm not going to do anything with the text yet I'm going to place all the trackers I'm going to place all the callouts first so that's going to be there I'll take this call out I'll do a copy unselect it and do a control V or paste and I'll just do it a couple times more on selected Ctrl V unselect the Ctrl V and we'll just put them for each one of these different transforms okay and then let's do the second one the second one is going to be for Huntington Center so let's grab this guy here and we know that if I zoom in where I had the tracker for that one um let's write that little box control F and then I want to grab that text for that one just move it up here for now just to get out of the way hit the next tracker hook that one up to this transform and we can move the text if you want first doesn't really matter and I'll put it over here for now the third one it goes to the park so the third one went down here so let's do a zoom in here and that was pretty simple one too that was right up there Ctrl F to go back again and the last one is the bridge so let's connect that one and let's move this text or now over here and let's move this tracker over to where we had it for the bridge and again that's the version was tricky or a trickier one so um I believe I stuck it here let's see I believe I put it right there let's zoom out easy way to find out is to played hit the button hit this button here to go forward to the end or actually this button here to go back and forward let's see so that's there that's there it sounds like they're they're okay all the trackers are okay so let's look at the text now so first text is going to be well it's before I do that let me let me zoom out again and Ctrl F or scale of fit we'll we'll zoom out put the first call out and let's this one here was called the vet Tower so and this is the keep it where it is for now this one here was the oh Huntington Center this one here is so I'll just you know I'll do this and this one here is the Discovery Bridge okay okay so next let's move these guys where they need the base let's start off with the bridge that's already there anyway and we have a couple different options we're gonna for uh justification and other types of formatting but here's one here for justifications for as you can see I left and by Center I'm going to move this one here to where I might want it to be um I might even put it down no I'll put it up here um second one here was the park so let me also do left on this one here and maybe we will just put that one maybe there uh that doesn't matter there let's do the next one which is the Huntington Center and that might stay centered um let's see we'll keep that one centered maybe we'll put it like that and then the tower and we just want to write Justified and let's just put this one up maybe up here and let's look at the timeline and see how things look so there's that there's that so that's the beginning that's how it's going to end I don't like how the bridge ends okay so I may move that [Music] um let's move you to maybe oh I like that even that's good enough let's try that beginning and then the end okay let's move you maybe here instead and maybe Center you a lot of choices that's going to end okay let's go to the beginning all right for now it's fine these as you can see you can do a lot of different things so let's go to the um back to the edit window and you can see how everything is going to lock and if I go out of that window and I hit play you know just put them all in there it does kind of act weird sometimes but if we equate the video as far as the edit play goes but it is working correctly um one thing I like to I hate one thing I hate to do is have the um text come in so abruptly like in and then out so I like to put a transition in there too so let me go into the effects and go to video Transitions and I like cross dissolve I'm talking about the whole cross is off inside where the clip area is on both sides I'm also going to make it bigger I like it's still not long enough for me so I'm gonna pretty much give it twice the size that's a personal choice and if I move the cursor the playhead and go over it you'll see it slowly come in a little bit more and then slowly go out there's a little bit cleaner looking um again I've played it might not look as clean but it is and that's pretty much it
