what's going on guys balkan arctic here and in today's video we're going to be talking about how to model an entire house in rabbit so i really like these videos where i can go step by step and just show you a little bit of what they call revit gameplay where i just show you what would be my approach on creating some really fun and interesting projects i actually did videos similar to this i released it like a month ago or so and it was really popular a lot of you really liked it and asked for more videos like this so today we have well exactly that we have a video where i'm just going to be showing you how to model this really really cool house so it's actually a modern tropical home by baa house plus baa studio i i didn't i never really heard about them but i i saw this house and well they they must be good when they created something like this i'm going to link leave a link to the actual kind of project website just below in the description so you can check it out if you're interested and yeah and we're just going to be modeling this really really cool house inside of revit and i'm just going to be showing you what would be my approach to getting started with such a project uh now full disclosure uh i'm not going to be finishing this project obviously it's supposed to be like a 10 20 minute video but i just want to show you how to get started working on projects like this now if you want like a whole kind of step by step going from the beginning to producing all necessary project documentation i actually do have that on my website in terms of courses which are well quite longer i have like a five hour course on how to create this really cool kind of simple uh single family house in revit and how to produce all the documentation for that and also i have like a big i think it's like 15 or 18 hour long course on like a an office building and what is the approach there and what you need to know and how you go step by step completing that so all of that is going to be on my website balkanarctic.com it's going to be the first link just below this video in the description and then also up in the cards above now apart from those two i have many other courses ranging from different levels of knowledge the different topics and apart from courses they have revit templates revit families and also a revit plugin so if you're interested please check it out okay so now we're going to get started but just one more thing before we do that uh make sure to like this video make sure to subscribe and hit the notification bell icon not only because it helps you not miss any of my future videos but also it makes the outback happy and well that's what that's why we're all here okay so without any further ado let's go into rabbit as my head shrinks down okay so here you can see i'm at my home screen i'm just going to go here to new and for the template file i'm just going to be using my kind of custom architecture design template the metric version as i said that's available on my website if you're interested okay so as soon as revit starts up i'm just going to get rid of this home screen and let's go directly to level one get rid of this and now let's bring in the floor plan so as i said i'm going to be using an existing project as reference and luckily they have a floor plan image which i'm just going to drag over here and this is the floor plan for that project and this is what i'm going to be using as kind of a reference to model this house now one thing that's really important to know when it comes to bringing in floor plans like this sometimes you don't have dimensions as we don't hear so what i like to do in those cases is i like to take some element which i already know what is the size of that and then i use that for reference so for beds for example they're usually two meters that's kind of the default length of a bed the width can change but the length is usually two meters unless it's like a huge king size bed so if i just select this image and then go to scale i can come into the bed here make sure to ignore the headrest so not the kind of the or the backboard or however you call this part here so you go from the actual bed like the horizontal part to the end as you can see this is now 270 so we just want to drag that down to 200 and this is what we get so now we know that the image is at the correct scale you just want to center it select the image go to pin so pn is the shortcut and once you pin it you're not going to move it accidentally this is really useful okay moving forward now let's start placing some walls so you go to the wall tool and here let's choose something like the exterior wall not the brick one because this definitely isn't brick so let's just use this and then go from level one up to level two that's perfectly fine so let's go like this i'm just going to go here go to here now let's switch the detail level to fine yeah this looks good so just go like that all the way around just giving kind of the perimeter of the house just so we can give it some shape also let's go here inside and if you want as i said you have that image below so you can just download that and kind of follow along and learn as well okay so now a little trick that i like to use when i'm tracing floor plans like this be that an image or an autocad file what i like to do is i like to make sure that my walls are transparent now you can go to a wireframe and then it's completely transparent but now it's really hard to see the lines so a little work around or a little trick that i like to use is i like to select all walls so just hover over one hit the tab key once to highlight the chain click to select you right click off to the side in the kind of empty space you go to override graphics and view by element and then here you can set up the transparency so you just crank down to like 40. you don't have to be too crazy about it but now even when it's not selected you can see that where the door is you can see where the windows are so it's really good in order to kind of get a better understanding of what's going on below your wall okay so let's now move forward let's go to the wall let's go to the interior wall so we have like a small wall segment here uh next we have like a segment here and then it goes off to the side here as well so i like to kind of go off kind of with broad strokes so to speak and then i like to find units so in this case you just go to your modify tab and go to the align tool and align this edge of the wall with this edge of this wall and now you can just bring it there perfect select this wall bring it in okay everything looks good let's continue now so i can just go with one wall like this so it would be really nice for these walls to align so now let's go let's move this one out a little bit and then again let's use the align tool to align these two we can even lock that in place so they always move together there we go i'm just going to get not do this cupboard i don't like that so let's continue another wall here perhaps for this desk area again you have to place it kind of off to the side and then align it afterwards and then you just place it there connect it perfect okay so you do that for the rest of the walls so here we just have a few more so let's do this one here this one there and like that and i'm just using arrow keys here to kind of make sure everything looks perfect there we go so we have our walls in place now it's time to place the doors and to place the windows now for the windows we're going to be using a combination of regular windows and then curtain walls for other parts so what you want to do here is just go to the door tool now luckily because i'm using the architecture design template as i said it's available on my website i'm going to leave a link up in the cards if you want to get it so for that here i have many doors so let's use this one for a deacon of exterior door the higher one let's get rid of the window i don't want the window place it here just like that there we go perfect perhaps move this wall just a little bit off to the side there we go let's go back to doors and let's now use a smaller door like a 70 centimeter one for this smaller bedroom and then we can use perhaps a larger one the 80. centimeter one for the bigger bathroom bedroom okay so once we have those in place uh now the next step would be to create the sliding doors so here uh you may have noticed that we have a sliding door behind this wall this one this one so they really used sliding doors or here i don't think we have a sliding door i think this is just a kind of gap between walls so we can just add another wall here perfect okay so as i said sliding doors so again let's go to doors and here also we have sliding doors so i think this yeah here we go 60 centimeter sliding doors will be perfect one two three okay there we go place it correctly perhaps closer to the wall here just like that okay so we have the sliding doors in place now let's focus on the windows and curtain walls so i'm first going to go with the window and here we have a window that's really tall and not that wide this uh 90 915 by 830 millimeter uh window so this is kind of a tall decently wide window so let's place one here one here as we see there one here in the bathroom a couple of them in the bedroom okay here you wanna align that properly so for this i'm just going to use the align tool there we go same thing goes here perfect i like the way those look also let's place another one here there we go do we have one here nope uh i think that's it with these big windows now it's time for curtain walls so for curtain walls what you want to use is well go to the wall tool i'm going to use the storefront because that usually works best and then uh i can go here up to level two that's perfectly fine adjust it to level two and then we can now place it now here i just want one small segment and here you can see the glass is kind of going to towards the inside so you just hit the space key to flip it towards the outside and you click there we go next we want another segment here a larger one also another segment here going almost from wall to wall or actually let's change the project a little bit let's go from wall to wall perfect i think it looks really nice okay let's uh place the curtain wall here so let's go like this hit the space key perfect and then let's do that here as well all the way towards the edge uh now also here you can unpin these uh vertical uh vertical mullions and then you can adjust like a door size so let's say 80 here and yeah we can do or i think we can do 19 1990 let's do 95 in the middle there we go i think this looks nicer okay perfect so we have all of those doors in place this one is a door so you can uh hit the tab key select the panel unpin that panel and then you can change it for a door if you wanna have a door there so that's nice so you can do that okay so now we have kind of the floor plan completed or almost completed uh we have kind of the the broad strokes so to speak we have the the outside the shell of the building now it's time to start looking at this from a 3d view so i'm just going to open up the 3d view here this is what we have and now uh let's take a look at what can we do here so the first thing is i like to set the levels so here let's set this to let's go with 280 i don't want this to be too high at least not for now okay there we go so we have something that looks like this i i really uh like the way that the house is looking right right now so let's go back into level one and now let's model the floor that we have here see here how we have the deck and then it's some beautiful wood i really like it so let's go to floor and i'm just going to go with exterior decking this is one of the default floors with the template and then i'm just going to place that all the way around just like that now you can use a different floor for the outside or you don't have to so it's really up to you i am going to do that so let's see i think that's it there we go we have the floor uh now you might have to use truman extend to corner to fix some of these in this case i think this is it so if i hit finish there we go we have the floor and now let's do the deck so again or this was the okay this was decking let's use this interior wood floor perfect and then let's switch to something for the decking yeah so again pick walls uh just to so you can get kind of the those same lines so i need that here and i need one here okay yeah i think this is it okay so once we have all of this in place you just switch to the regular align tool and then we want one segment here we want to expand this up to there go all the way to the outside here go all the way here again i just want to adjust this to the kind of the outer edge of the of the walls same thing goes here just because i think it looks nicer when you adjust it to the other edge of the wall perfect okay so once we have this in place then it's time to use trim and extend so for trim and extend to corner you just go like this all the way around here as well and i think we have this one and that's it so now if i hit finish we're going to get that exterior deck so when i go back to 3d this is what we have okay now we have this all in place now let's create our roof so for the roof uh luckily here in the floor plan view we can already see the roof so it's this dashed line that we have here now we might have to turn this into wireframe just so we can see that dash line everywhere but that's fine so what you want to do now is go to your roof tool uh revit is going to ask us do we want to place the roof on level two and yes we do so let's leave that at level two click yes i go to the line tool and then just go all the way around following that line uh now one thing here to note it might make sense to just hit the escape key and then uncheck the defined slope because we're going to use something else to define the slope so i'm just going to leave this kind of slope slopeless okay yeah let's get let's let's use that slope yeah i'm hopeless okay so let's go all the way around i'm not following the line perfectly just depending on where the walls are so i'm just going to go a little bit towards the outside there as well here too there we go and then just connect these two perfect okay so once we have the kind of initial floor shape you can use a slope arrow to give it all the slope so you can just go from one side to the other you select the arrow and then here you have the leveled tail level at head and then you can add offsets so i just wanna let's say uh 1200 or 120 centimeter offset here it's finished go to the 3d view and then you can see what that looks like so if you're happy with that offset you can leave it as is or if you want to change it for some reason you can you can do that you can do that as well so for example in this case let's yeah let's let's leave it as is perhaps give it a little offset of -20 just make it go down a little bit yeah i think this is going to look a lot better now also something that they've realized here now if i go and if i attach these walls to the top it's going to extend the curtain wall to the top now i don't want that i want a wall segment above that curtain wall so what i'm going to do is select all of these curtain wall segments so we have a few of them and then i'm going to go here and make sure that they're at level two but also let's give them a little top offset of minus 20. okay see now how we have this wall above and now we can select the whole chain of walls like that and also you can select the interior of walls uh because usually you want them to go up in a house like this unless you have a ceiling or something like that you don't want to have walls that are like this in in the air that don't connect to the roof okay so once we have that we just go to attach top base select that roof and this is what we have okay so something that they like with this house is the fact that it has like a curtain wall that just follows kind of the shape of this roof now before we do that let's add some columns first so for the columns what i'm going to do is go back into level one zoom in here i go to my structure tab go to columns and here let's see do we have something like timber no we don't so let's add in some timber columns so you go here to load family it's going to give you a menu scroll down to structural columns go to wood and then here we have timber perfect open that up and i'm just going to use one type which is 140 by 140. click ok perfect and then what you do is just vertical column depth and change the depth to height go to level two and then let's place one here like that just following the line of the wall place one here and then you see these little guidelines that you get you can just use those to kind of guide that along there we go and then here we have three so let's place one there place one there and place one in the middle it escaped a few times and now if we switch to uh just to hit a line there we go we can see those and i want this one to be centered so i'm just going to go to align the dimension go from center to center to center place it and then equalize that perfect and here if you get this warning just click ok ok so we have everything in place in terms of these columns i just don't like the fact that they're kind of all on the outside so i'm just going to fix that with the modify tab and the align tool just check on multiple alignment you select the edge of the floor and then you just click click click and click perfect okay now i'm just going to go to level two so here if i perhaps get rid of this roof so let's let's go to hide element perfect now if i go to architecture go to wall go to curtain storefront i can go from this wall's edge hit the space key to go to the outside and go like that same thing goes here space key perfect so you just go from column to column there you go you go like that uh now also i don't like the fact that it has this uh this uh in here so i'm just going to unpin this and can we remove this okay we can just remove that segment okay so let's go to the 3d view yeah we can see that here so we can just see this and pin that pen perfect okay so we have that and then on the other side again i don't like the fact that we have this gridline oops okay perfect and also here i don't think i've gotten rid of the grid line there we go up here as well okay these are sometimes really hard to to get rid of there we go perfect so now we have these curtain walls up here so what do you do now well you can make a broad selection now it's going to select a lot of things so what you do is you go to filter you go to check none and then you just select the walls so none of these just the walls you hit apply you click ok and then you select the roof oops i did not want that so let's do that again so just the walls hit apply okay okay now you go to attach top base then you select the roof delete the mullions that you don't need and this is what we have so now it looks just like the picture also we can go here and select the columns so let's go and select these as well you go to attach top base again you select that roof so they're just going to extend through to the roof and this is what we want to see so there you go this is now starting to take some shape now something that you've been asking me for the previous video which i did not do that but i did show it in the thumbnail and some of you got really angry is i didn't show you how i've modeled the site so let's gonna finish this up by modeling the site of this particular project so the site kind of follows the elevation of the of the house of the building here at this kind of living room area and then it drops off at the bedroom area hallway bathroom and so on so for modeling this site what i'm going to do is i'm just going to go to my site plan obviously and then in the site plan you go to massive insight you go to the oppo surface and then you start placing points so what i'm going to do for points is i'm just going to go and let's place some points starting from here so this one can be for example at 0 0 then let's add like uh let's use 100 centimeters 100 and 100 perfect hit the escape a few times and then you can just copy these so what you like to do is i like to copy them like this copy again and then just copy them a few times to kind of get a grid for this house okay this might have been a little bit too far on the outside same thing goes here there we go okay so once we have these we can kind of play around with that grid but there we go i'm happy with this and now we start changing these so as i said these were at 100 and these were at zero so then these i can switch to something like minus 50. and these i can switch to 50. then this one here will be so this one was this one was 50. this one can be minus 50 whereas these two will be maybe zero and then this one here so these two or minus 50 this one can be minus 100 and then you just go like that so these two here can be minus 150 there we go and then this can be minus 100 yeah what was this so you just go like that you can play around with this grid and you set it up so this one can be minus 200 this one's zero this one's 150 so these two can be minus 200 as well and then all of the rest of these might be minus 250 and then these can just stay at minus 150 yeah let's do it like that so i like to start off just by drawing out some numbers like that some points uh you hit finish and then you go to the 3d view just to see what you have created and well this is starting to look kind of correct for the the shape of or the the topography of this house uh i might i might have wanted to go a bit lower here in the middle so you can select that go to edit surface yeah so this whole thing if i go to south elevation i can just move this like this manually so i can go 70 centimeters deeper with this and then all these can go i don't know not that far so it's really kind of playing with the topography of this particular project but yeah there we go i like this now one thing that we do see is uh as a bit of an issue is the fact that this house is now floating mid-air and you you usually don't see that in real life so let's now add some columns on which this is going to be standing now i already have these wooden columns so i can extend them but first let's go to one of the elevations like the south elevation and let's add an extra level so just select the level right click create similar and then let's add a level below let's go with minus 300 perfect and let's call this one d i don't know like the bottom of columns okay let's rename the corresponding views perfect and now uh when you go to your 3d view you can just select all of these columns that we have here there we go and just change their base level to bottom of columns and now they're all going underground now obviously this house is going to have a a few more columns so what you can do now is you can go for example let's let's try something let's go to bottom of columns where you can just see the columns and then here uh what we can do is we can go to properties underlay let's go with level one or let's try level two no that doesn't help level one but if i make it wireframe okay perfect so now we can see where the walls of the house are so now i can just select these columns and then i can copy them so i can just copy these columns or let's just use the outside ones so just like that copy there we go now for these uh they're only going to go from uh from your level one down to the kind of the bottom of the column so they're not going to go all the way up to the roof obviously because we have walls above that so i'm not going to worry about that so there we go we can have these columns and now we can just play around place them as you can see this really isn't the final project we're just kind of trying out something with the design and just see if that will work so in this case we have to move this one here and we're just kind of playing around testing out our ideas and in the end obviously we're going to need some help from an actual structural engineer to tell us does this make sense structurally or are we just wasting their time so anyways let's place just a few more just to make this look a bit more like a real project because usually that's how you have to get started you have to consider construction when you're designing the aesthetic of the house uh but obviously you cannot do it perfectly so in the beginning it's just going to be kind of trial and error or something like that so i think this is good enough just for kind of presentation purposes i think this looks uh good enough also one more thing for presenting what they use for my thumbnails just so i can see topography a little bit nicer what i like to do is go here to the properties and then for my 3d views i obviously hide the levels because i don't like them don't like to see them when presenting but also i turn on the section box so the section box is actually hidden in this case so i can just unhide this and i can see it here and then i can just go like this and start cutting into that topography just a little bit like that from this side and then from this side as well and now your topography is going to appear like this so if you turn on a shaded or something like that it's going to appear as a kind of 3d mass and not just the surface and i think that looks much better in terms of presentation but there we go we have our house it's kind of the initial kind of draft uh draft of the house and it's i think it's good enough for presentation purposes just to kind of see if your ideas make sense when you visualize them and i think it looks really really nice also one more thing when you have the floors kind of sticking out like this uh below the the floor the walls you can just hover over one of the walls hit the tab key to select the whole chain of the exterior walls and just give them a base offset of the negative value of the thickness of the floor so in this case that would be minus 20 centimeters and then it would just kind of hide that floor and now everything looks good so there you go this is the this is the the video i'm going to stop here uh as i said it's just going to be drafted so just so you can see uh what's going on uh do you like the design and then if you're happy with this then you can start adding complexity sometimes you have to start completely over but this is obviously a necessary step for us architects to to get started with our new ideas so i hope you have enjoyed this video uh please tell me in the comment section below do you do you like these videos uh did you learn something new and also is this your architectural approach or do you have something else do you just use sketches in this design phase or do you start modeling in revit just to get a 3d kind of visual idea of what's going on so there you go i hope you have enjoyed it thank you for watching guys make sure to check out my website balkanarctic.com for more uh revit courses there i have over 120 hours of content and i'm adding more each week make sure to subscribe for more videos and also i've added a video over there that might interest you as well
