what's going on guys balkan architect here and in today's video i'm just going to be giving you my first impressions of the twin motion software so if you haven't heard about it yet twin motion is a real time rendering software which allows you to create some really amazing realistic presentations for your model it allows you to create either renderings or animations vr presentations and much much more now i've actually teamed up with twin motion and they're sponsoring this video and we want to give you kind of the my first impressions of the software and more importantly the first impressions of a revit user so you know how this kind of goes on uh in the revit workflow uh so in this video i'm just going to be showing you how to quickly export a revit model so go from revit into twin motion i'm just going to be showing you kind of the quickest approach uh there are multiple approaches and we're going to be talking about that perhaps in some future videos but for now kind of the quickest approach and then i'm just going to give you uh just a simple explanation of or a rundown of the of the interface in twin motion uh go over how to set up the materials so they look really nice and realistic how to add some additional components things like trees vegetation and any additional elements that you might want to add to kind of enhance the either just your model or the surroundings around your model and then we're just going to be kind of going over some additional features that you might want to consider uh when it comes to choosing a real-time rendering engine so let's now jump into uh revit and i'm just going to be showing you how to export the model so let's go and here we are in revit as you can see this is one of my popular models this is the kind of the simple single family house i have a whole course on how to create this and i'm going to be showing you how to take this model and go straight into twin motion with that now what do you use for the approach is you want to export the model for the simplest approach you want to export the model as here if you just go to file here we have the option to export and fbx is one of the exporting options so fbx is kind of the file file type that's going to be working with winmotion but as you can see here it's grayed out if i go to the floor plan again if i want to go to file and then export again it's going to be uh it's going to be grayed out now the reason for this and it actually says here saves a 3d view as an fbx file so we actually have to have a 3d view opened up in order to export that fbx file so let's just go simply here to the default 3d view that kind of gives us the default 3d model and i'm actually going to get rid of all of these trees just because we are going to be adding some vegetation later on uh some trees later on in twin motion i don't like these rabbit trees so we can just get rid of those and as you can see this is kind of the this is the the model that we're going to be using perhaps let's hide these elements as well there we go perfect so just at the level so we just have a simple model and then we also have the site that surrounds that model so now to export now it's going to work so you just go here to file you go to export and here as you can see it says fbx and now we can actually click on that and we can export the file so you have to choose where you want to save that i'm just going to go to my desktop let's call it complete house i don't care that much about the name so let's just hit save and now it's going to export that file now once exported we can jump straight into twin motion and then continue working so i think it's i think it's done so let's let me open up twin motion and here you can see the thing using the twin motion 2021 0.1.2 version and now we want to open that revit project up so to open up the revit project you just want to go here to the import button you click and then you want to find your file so you just you go here to open and now we have to find it as i said it's on my desktop and here we have that fbx file see as you can see here these are all of the file types if you can see that from my head here are all of the file types that it supports so as long as you have these you can use them so let's go and hit open there we go and for the options uh here for the options i'm just going to be making some a couple of adjustments here the collapse by and then you have the keep hierarchy collapsed by material and collapse all so the keep hierarchy kind of keeps that revit model hierarchy collapsed by material it basically each model element is going to be just classified as materials so for example everything that's made out of glass is going to be one element so it's not going to be like a window is a complete element just the glass of one window and then glassed out the other window and so on and this is the option that i prefer using because it makes it so much easier to later on apply new twin motion materials and that's kind of the point here you want to apply those twin motion materials because they're so good so i'm just going to go with this one and then collapse all would basically mean that it's just one big model so that definitely will not work so i'm just going to go with this one and yeah that's it so you just click ok and it's going to just import that data and it's going to open up your model and here we go this is your model if you just scroll out a little bit there we go oops i know the navigation uh it's quite similar to revit here you have this quick little uh window for navigation by holding it down on your scroll wheel you can kind of pan around by holding down your right click you can look around and then you can also hold the shift and your scroll wheel and then you can orbit around so quite similar to rabbit now one thing that you really like is the fact that you can actually toggle between this kind of orbiting view and a walking view simply by going here to this little i option and then as you can see you have a pedestrian mode and there's actually a shortcut for that which you can use as well let me see yeah pedestrian mode and there we go so now we're here if i just look around again i'm just right clicking to look around and then you can move around just like in a video game so you just use the you just use your w s a and d keys and then you can just walk around look around and it actually makes some uh just some walking noises i just realized that it's kind of cool so anyways as you can see it's just like a video game uh now uh moving forward for some additional adjustments that i found out i like to do personally just right out of the box and that's to go again to this little eye button and then here we have the option uh see this little kind of sun icon you can open that up and then you can change the time so you can kind of play around at what time it is and i really like the fact that we have all of these sliders so something that you'll notice throughout this video is that there are all of these little sliders and it's super easy and intuitive so just play around with that little slider just click and you just drag it around until you find something that works perfectly for your model now let's take a look at how the whole interface looks like and how it works so if you take a look at the model here you have this big model area in the upper part and then below that we have this area which i like to look at at this as sort of the revits properties panel so here you're going to have a lot of options such as that then in this corner we have this little uh button to kind of expand the menu and then here we have the the scene and then this is our model and as you can see the model is divided by that by the material as we've specified initially and as you can see here it's just going to be dividing everything by materials and then when you select items that are the same material it's just going to highlight all of those items uh so this is sort of like your uh your project browser in revit uh then here uh this little i button that we already used we have the option to set up the the time of day uh we have the option to set up the speed uh we have just the option to create screenshots and then also here we have some view options so as you can see we have vr we have model views and then we also have clipping which is kind of like a section which is really cool as well and then finally something that's probably most interesting when it comes to twin motion or most importantly the whole reason why you're here and that's over here so as you can see here we have our libraries there we have the materials vegetation and landscape objects lighting and much more which we're going to be exploring now so let's move forward and let's start preparing our model let's start making it look really realistic so what i'm going to do now is just go here to the materials open up the materials and let's get started let's add some materials to our model let's make it actually look good so you go here and let's say we want to add some glass for our windows and as you can see here we have multiple materials well we actually have quite a lot of different glass materials and then you can just pick out what works best for you now when you hover over a material it opens up so you can see what that would look like kind of uh once placed and in this case i'm just going to go with the simplest clear glass and you can just go and place that material now once we have opened up these materials you can see here that we have this little option that says do we want to replace the material or apply the material to objects so i prefer the option to replace material so it just replaces the original material that we had in revit with this nice much more realistic glass material so we can just drag it over here find that glass and as you can see because we have collapsed that by material now everything that has that glass material now he has this really good nice realistic glass now let's move forward let's say that we want to add some brick to the outside of this house well we can just go back here let's find brick and then here we can just choose what works best for us so let's say that we want to use something like this or like this again we just slap that material here and now we have that brick now it might look a little bit too small and it does so you can go here to well as i said this is kind of like your properties so you can just go here to the scale and then bring that scale up okay this might be a bit too large or let's see oh actually it looks really good now keep something in mind here for the scale you will see that for most revit models you're going to have to crank that scale up quite a bit and when you move the slider up it's only going to go up to 10. but don't worry if you want to increase the size of the material even further you can just type in here 15 and as you can see this is now going to be 15. now that's obviously a bit too large i think 10 and something that i found in most cases just going up to 10 here it's going to be really good also here you can play around with some additional settings like the color reflection uh weather settings some additional settings here and you can play around and customize that material even further now we can just continue here let's say for these doors i can go back here to perhaps some wood materials let's see so here as you can see we have many wood materials now this is more for flooring so let's go all the way down and here i think we have some materials that will work a little bit better something like this oak or what's this so we can play around see what would look nicest i like this one so let's apply that to our doors and perhaps we can add that to the table as well have it have it the same material and also let's bring that scale up a little bit more to to have that wood grain look a bit nicer so see looks much better okay uh now let's go further let's go here to our uh malians so for that for example we can go and search for some metal we can just use brushed aluminum for that so apply that material here and so on so you would basically go around playing around with your model and just make sure that it looks exactly how you want it to look but it's super easy super straightforward you just continue applying materials from here you can customize the materials uh here below and in the end you will have a kind of a much cleaner and nicer model much more realistic than anything that you would ever get in revit and as you can see here i have played around with the materials a little bit and this is what i have so i have even applied some uh grass here below on the ground now that they see i could have added some something else here so let's go to materials again here we have the ground materials man-made and then we can just add perhaps some light asphalt color or something like that here increase the scale there we go looks much nicer but there we go that's that's the house that we have as you can see materials have been applied everywhere even the roof and so on now it's time to add a little bit more of an environment around this model so let's let's do that so for the environment let's go back here a few steps and then here we have the vegetation and landscape so one of the things that we can do here is add some trees now these are some really nice realistic trees here as you can see you can change kind of the the age of the tree and it actually shows you the different ages of the trees kind of how how it begins and then how it grows and you have that pretty much for any tree that you might want to apply here so we can add some trees so let's let's go here to our uh to our uh content ad and then let's go to vegetation paint now this allows you to basically add vegetation with a paint tool now i know it might sound a little bit odd but it's actually really powerful so if i just go here and add this tree let's say that they like this tree uh this might be a bit too large for our model okay this is nice and then let's go with something else let's see something that's not too big okay this might be a bit too small but let's see well let's go up here i know i like this one so anyways i'm just going to add all of these uh three trees here then here we have like this diameter which we can set up and then here we have the paint tool and this is how that paint tool appears now you can increase the diameter if you want here you have the density but we can concentrate on that later on so basically you just go and you paint some trees on see it's really cool let's see if we can make this a bit smaller perhaps like that and then you just go like that adding trees wherever you might want to have trees perhaps here alongside this line here and so on now here you can you can even erase those so if you don't like some of the trees you can just get rid of them so it's super simple super easy to place those trees and then this is what that looks like so i have some over here which might be a bit to the outside so let's erase those so there we go that's how you can simply and easily add some trees around your model now obviously this isn't the only way to add trees you can just simply come to a tree that you like and then you can just place it next to your model uh here as you can see you can play around with that uh height or the age of the tree so you play around with the age of the tree and then that automatically changes the changes the height of the tree here you can set the grow growth on and off here you can play around with the leaf stent so if you want to tint the leaves make it a little bit more orangish you can do that uh so something like that you have the bark then so you can play around with a lot of things you can set up the the season here and so on uh so that's how you can just manually add trees so you can just come in like this place a tree there age it a little bit and there we go uh so that's kind of the uh and the more and precise way of placing these trees now if i go back here as you can see it's not only trees we can play around with uh we can add some grass and flowers we have uh detail grasses we have rocks you can even find like rocks that you might want to add there just to make everything look a little bit more uh natural i guess so there we go we have added a nice little rock here on the ground uh in front of the house and let's go back let's see maybe some bushes yeah that's nice so you can just play around with that again here we have the option to play around with the size uh and then for the let's let's take a look at grass so here for the grass you can add the this uh more realistic grass now i know uh that people are really crazy about the grass so uh it's it's always useful to have the option to place grass now this is kind of the the the simple way of placing it just like that but of course you can use the uh you can use the same tools like we did before so whoops let's go here with grass i don't know let's place some grass here and then let's make this a bit smaller like that and then as you can see you can place a bunch of grass there which is really cool so if you want realistic grass so or hyper rail is the grass as you can see if i zoom in that's how you do it okay let's go back back again and then obviously we can play some objects some vehicles so we can add like a car here in the driveway so i can just go let's see okay we do have a nice selection of cars here so you can just take whatever and place it here okay let's place a sports car yeah so you can just place the car there you can use this to rotate that around so for everything you can set it up fairly precisely just by playing around with these parameters here so you can just place it like that yeah and if it looks like it's a little bit in the air you can always select and then bring it down or up but i think it was okay originally so okay now we moved it a little bit to too low okay there we go so you can play around like that and as you can see now this with just a kind of few steps just simply throwing out elements uh on the on the screen here uh we can create something that looks uh really good it does add a certain amount of realism and if i just go back here to the pedestrian mode yeah see how this now looks much more realistic you can walk around that nice big grass is there see so you can play with that and so on uh so i'm really happy with the way that this turned out right now and it's really easy and i really like the the little sound that we get when we walk around and you can see the whole house we have the trees around uh now one thing to note uh is if you want to go inside of the house uh the doors aren't going to open up for you obviously because it's a rabbit model so what you need to do for that is just switch here from the pedestrian mode to the fly mode and then when you fly you can fly through inside and then you can switch back to the to the pedestrian mode to just walk around your house as you can see here i have added some material for the for the ground and so on set up the materials have some concrete there and there we go now something else really important to mention is that now we have uh inside of twin motion with the latest releases we get the quick cell mega scan assets and now those are here if i just go back a little bit uh if i go for example into uh materials but if we go for example here in the library here we have that quick cell mega scans now this is a company that creates these really cool 3d assets that are hyper realistic for example here if we go to balconies they scan existing balconies so to create these really really good scans so for example if i just search here for uh i don't know like interior door so here we have some really realistic doors so these are really powerful assets that are going to give you uh some some really good results uh here we we have some grass for example artificial grass then we have this dried grass and so on so if you want to get that hyper realism by using these assets you're going to you're going to be able to achieve that so that's something really important that that's added to the twin motion library now some other important features to note is that when motion cloud that has been added recently and that allows you to show your presentations to your clients obviously when you take a look at this it does require a really powerful computer to kind of get the the maximum result out of twin motion and just to make it a lot easier to show your clients so with the cloud you can just upload your files to the cloud and as long as they have a decent uh internet connection they can view the model there is also a a plugin for revit where you can update the models in a real time so if you make any changes to the derivative model you can just kind of update the link so to speak and then uh the twin motion model will update as well which is also really useful for your workflow if if you're working on the revit model uh simultaneously to adjusting it into a motion for your presentation and then finally we do have the construction phasing added as well now this is something that allows you to create an animation where you show how the kind of the whole construction process uh would look like now i find this really cool i like i like to kind of show off how how that construction is going to look and i think it's a it's a really powerful tool so there you go that's kind of the first impressions of twin motion i was really excited uh researching this i found it uh very powerful uh it's definitely something that i'm going to include in my workflow and i wanted to ask you well do you agree with that now if you want to check out twin motion you can get it by following the link just below the video in the description or up in the cards so you can click on that and you can get your version of twin motion it's actually completely free if you're a student and just learning uh you can you can get your free version check it out and tell me if you want to see more videos i plan on making a video where i show you all of the different approaches to exporting out of uh out of revit to use for twin motion there are actually three methods and i wanted to show all three of them and also i want to show you how to create a cool animation but that's something if you're really interested tell me please in the comment section below and that's something that i will definitely then do in the future okay so that's pretty much it for this video i hope you have enjoyed it and i'll obviously be back in a few days with another tutorial so make sure to like and share this video make sure to subscribe for more videos in the future and till then see
