I totally agree with Zee about trick taking games. They aren't hard but they are kind of their own genre. If you have someone who has never played a trick taking game it can be like pulling teeth to teach it.
I like this list because there are games that I definitely did not enjoy teaching. Unfortunately for me, I don't have the opportunity to play with the same people over and over again, so if a game can't be taught to new players easily or efficiently it's out of my collection.
There are some games still in my collection that I might wait to see what kind of gamer the person is before busting it out on the table. Like my heaviest longest euros, I'm going to make sure you're fine with the idea of a medium weight before I make you play Mombasa or La Granja.
For me?
Space Cadets is #1. And #2 thru #9 is also Space Cadets.
My #10 is Space Alert.
I know it's a popular one to mention, but I've just never had their kind of problems teaching Race for the Galaxy. I'll admit it's rough since new players have to learn card distribution AND the symbols but I really feel like they make it seem far worse than it is. I actually really enjoy teaching Race because I think the symbols are incredibly consistent.
Kinda surprised to not see Android: Netrunner, or especially Doomtown. Those games are nightmares to teach to new players.
100% agree on RFTG. Definitely had a few times where people who were new to the game came up to me to jump in on a game because they've heard it was a cool game and wanted to try it when I've just finished explaining it to another new player, and just sat there wondering if I should, at the expense of the first new player's time. Really a lose-lose situation.
isn't small world like the capital of noob central? alright the decline thing i guess makes sense.
