Can anyone explain why Mysterium was the top offender? I consider it the game that best marries its theme, it actually directly contributes to the game when the ghost can only communicate in knocks (as a ghost should).
The position isn't really explained, and I can't really see the game working with another theme.
Theme is weird for some people. Personally, I like the very strange, bold themes that aren't beaten dead. I love the dress-making theme. Haven't played Pret-a-Porter or Rococo yet but I love that they exist. I also love when games are made with themes that sound like they absolutely wouldn't work. Agricola jumps to mind immediately. Nothing about it sounds like it should work as a game, but Uwe Rosenberg made it work fantastically. I bought ...and then we held hands for the theme and the aesthetics alone.
I always hear Tom complain about too many "Trading in the Mediterranean" games, and I agree. But I think we need to embrace the strange, bizarre, different themes instead of being so dismissive to a point of calling them "weird".
No Castles of Burgundy? I turned that game down half a dozen times before I got it to the table because of its theme and art styles.
I was surprised The Others was on there instead of Chaos in the Old World. I got the impression he was semi okay fighting the evil, just not being the evil.
Man I definitely agree with Mombasa, I really love the game and have it in my collection. But it's a tough task to introduce this game because the theme is quite dark (colonial control of Africa). Have had a few players I've introduced this to that were mostly put off by the theme but enjoyed the gameplay.
I think Barbarossa often comes up for this topic.
My only criticism of the dice tower is I cannot stand Madea.
But honestly I love the dice tower and the content they create so I'll let it slide this time.
It's really funny (and kinda sad) how averse dudes are to "girly" themes like fashion.
The caveat is that the theme is absolutely fitting for the game, but I just can't get that into Patchwork. Wonderful game; girlfriend likes it too. However, it rarely hits the table because the theme is absolutely dull for both of us. I can't help but think if it was re-themed with something else I would be playing it constantly.
